Abstract:We study the physical effects of torsion as predicted by the Einstein-Cartan theory in the test particle approximation and the non-relativist limit. We first present the corresponding non-relativistic Hamiltonian for a 2-spinor. Then, we solve an idealized reflection and transmission problem for a non-relativistic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ beam travelling across a spin-polarized target. We identify deviations in the spin polarizations of the reflected and transmitted as observables capable of distinguishing Einstein-Cartan from standard general relativity. If measured, this effect would constitute compelling evidence for the presence of spacetime torsion.

The Quantization of the Space-Time Defects in the Early Universe

Abstract:In Riemann-Cartan manifold U-4, a new topological invariant is obtained by means of the torsion tenser. In order to describe the space-time defects (which appear in the early universe due to torsion) in an invariant form, the new topological invariant is introduced to measure the size of defects and it is interpreted as the dislocation flux in internal space. Using the so-called phi-mapping method and the gauge potential decomposition, the dislocation flux is quantized in units of the Planck length. The quantum numbers are determined by the Hopf indices and the Brouwer degrees. Furthermore, the dynamic form of the dislocations is also studied by defining an identically conserved current.

Abstract:As two generalizations of Einstein's general relativity, the nontrivial spacetime torsion and the compact extra dimensions have been largely studied in the literature. In this paper, by combining a torsioned Kaluza–Klein scheme and the field-theory cosmic string theory, we discuss that a higher-dimensional torsion component can be expressed in terms of the usual four-dimensional field strength two-form, and this torsion form can then get trapped into the cores of the cosmic strings and further relate to the intrinsic spins of the strings.

Abstract:We discuss the problem of canonical quantization of a free massive spinor field in the Schwarzschild spacetime. It is shown that a consistent procedure of canonical quantization of the field can be carried out without taking into account the internal region of the black hole, the canonical commutation relations in the resulting theory hold exactly and the Hamiltonian has the standard form. Spin sums are obtained for solutions of the Dirac equation in the Schwarzschild spacetime.

Geometrisation of Fermions in Flat Spacetimes

Abstract:Requiring physical consistency in a classical flat spacetime geometrisation of fermions is shown to suggest the introduction of torsion. A resulting simple model for that torsion produces a localised quantum-like particle as a solution of a spinor identity that closely resembles the Dirac equation of quantum electrodynamics. All relevant integrals involving solutions of the spinor identity converge and require that the spin, which is no longer intrinsic but arises from circulating currents, be 1/2 whilst the magnetic moment takes the quantum value of 1 magneton, characteristic of an isolated Dirac particle. The underlying torsion associates the otherwise strictly localised particle with an extended spacetime structure that may be relevant to wider quantum phenomena.

Abstract:We propose that the four-velocity of a Dirac particle is related to its relativistic wave function by $u^i=\bar{\psi}\gamma^i\psi/\bar{\psi}\psi$. This relativistic wave$-$particle duality relation is demonstrated for a free particle related to a plane wave in a flat spacetime. For a curved spacetime with torsion, the momentum four-vector of a spinor is related to a generator of translation, given by a covariant derivative. The spin angular momentum four-tensor of a spinor is related to a generator of rotation in the Lorentz group. We use the covariant conservation laws for the spin and energy$-$momentum tensors for a spinor field in the presence of the Einstein$-$Cartan torsion to show that if the wave satisfies the curved Dirac equation, then the four-velocity, four-momentum, and spin satisfy the classical Mathisson$-$Papapetrou equations of motion. We show that these equations reduce to the geodesic equation. Consequently, the motion of a particle guided by the four-velocity in the pilot-wave quantum mechanics coincides with the geodesic motion determined by spacetime. We also show how the duality and the operator form of the Mathisson$-$Papapetrou equations arise from the covariant Heisenberg equation of motion in the presence of torsion.

Abstract:We consider the Einstein-Cartan theory with the tetrad $e_{\mu}^{a}$ and spin connection $\omega_{\mu ab}$ taken as being independent fields. Diffeomorphism invariance and local Lorentz invariance result in there being two distinct gauge transformations in this approach, and consequently two ghost fields arise when employing the usual Faddeev-Popov quantization procedure. Our choice of gauge fixing retains the gauge invariances of the background field. We show that the gauge algebra is closed even in the presence of torsion, and the resulting BRST invariance can be found for the effective action. We also derive the Slavnov-Taylor identities, which reflect the BRST symmetries of this theory.

Abstract:The description of space-time in a quantum theoretical framework must be considered as a fundamental problem in physics. Most attempts start with an already given classical space-time - then the quantization is done. In contrast to this the central assumption in this paper is not to start with space-time, but to derive it from some more abstract presuppositions like this is done in von Weizsaecker's "quantum theory of ur-alternatives". Mathematically the transition from a manifold with spin structure to a manifold with four real space-time coordinates has to be considered. The suggestion is made that this transition can be well described by using a tetradial formalism which appears to be the most natural connection between ur-spinors and real four-vectors.

Abstract:We quantize a relativistic massive complex spin-0 field and a relativistic massive spin-1/2 field on a space-time hyperboloid. We call this procedure point-form canonical quantization. Lorentz invariance of the hyperboloid implies that the 4 generators for translations become dynamic and interaction dependent, whereas the 6 generators for Lorentz transformations remain kinematic and interaction free. We expand the fields in terms of usual plane waves and prove the equivalence to equal-time quantization by representing the Poincare generators in a momentum basis. We formulate a generalized scattering theory for interacting fields by considering evolution of the system generated by the interaction dependent four-momentum operator. Finally we expand our generalized scattering operator in powers of the interaction and show its equivalence to the Dyson expansion of usual time-ordered perturbation theory.

Abstract:The quintet of Dirac 4×4 matrices suggests that the fundamental dimension of the internal (spin) space is n=5 , instead of the conventional dimension n=4 . Then instead of the conventional 4×4 tetrads (vierbein), gravity is described in terms of the 5-bein (fünfbein or five legs). The spinor string in a Clifford substructure of space-time

Abstract:We factorize the space-time coordinates of Minkowski space into Weyl spinors with components in a split Clifford algebra. Poisson brackets are defined for Clifford-valued canonical variables and applied to the quantization of the point particle and string. In particular, we obtain the Lorentz algebra for the quantum string, and show that the string supports both integral and half-integral spin states. Commutation and anti-commutation relations are derived for the amplitudes of the spinning string. The Clifford algebra is augmented with the octonions through an R-algebra tensor product, and we apply the results of Manogue, Schray and Dray on octonionic Lorentz transformations to obtain a Lorentz invariant string action in ten dimensions.

Abstract:A construction of the real 4D Minkowski space-time starting from quantum harmonic oscillators is proposed. First, a 2D spinor space and its dual are derived from the standard commutation relations obeyed by the ladder operators of two independent 1D harmonic oscillators. The complex 4D Minkowvski vector space V is then constructed from these spinor space. The flat, real 4D Minkowski manifold is finally built as an approximate description of a manifold of unitary operators constructed from V. Lorentz invariance is recovered and several possible extensions are discussed, which connections to quantum optics and condensed matter physics.

Abstract:The dynamics of the torsion field is analyzed in the framework of the Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of Gravity (CCGG), a De Donder–Weyl Hamiltonian formulation of gauge gravity. The action is quadratic in both, the torsion and the Riemann–Cartan tensor. Since the latter adds the derivative of torsion to the equations of motion, torsion is no longer identical to spin density, as in the Einstein–Cartan theory, but an additional propagating degree of freedom. As torsion turns out to be totally anti-symmetric, it can be parametrised via a single axial vector. It is shown in this paper that, in the weak torsion limit, the axial vector obeys a wave equation with an effective mass term which is partially dependent on the scalar curvature. The source of torsion is thereby given by the fermion axial current which is the net fermionic spin density of the system. Possible measurable effects and approaches to experimental analysis are addressed. For example, neutron star mergers could act as a dipoles or quadrupoles for torsional radiation, and an analysis of radiation of pulsars could lead to a detection of torsion wave background radiation.

Spin systems as quantum simulators of quantum field theories in curved spacetimes

Abstract:We demonstrate that a quantum field theory (QFT) in general two-dimensional curved spacetimes can be realized by a system of quantum spins or qubits. We consider a spin-1/2 model on a one-dimensional ring with spatially and temporally varying exchange couplings and magnetic fields. This model reduces to a QFT of Majorana fermions in the continuum limit. From this correspondence, we establish a dictionary for translating between the spacetime-dependent parameters of the spin model and the general metric on which the QFT is defined. After addressing the general case, we consider the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric as a simple example. According to the dictionary, the QFT of Majorana fermions on the FLRW metric corresponds to the Ising model with a time-dependent transverse magnetic field. We demonstrate that the production of Majorana particles in the expanding universe can be simulated with the transverse-field Ising model by increasing the strength of the magnetic field. Furthermore, we examine the Unruh effect through the spin system by using our prescription and show the direct relation between the entanglement (or modular) Hamiltonian in the spin system and the Rindler Hamiltonian. This approach provides an experimentally viable system for probing various phenomena in QFT within curved spacetime, while also opening the door to uncovering nontrivial phenomena in spin systems inspired by curved spacetime physics. It offers fresh perspectives on both QFT in curved spacetimes and quantum many-body spin systems, revealing profound connections between these fields.
