Abstract:The CexZr1-xO2 (x=0 similar to1.0) mixed oxides have been prepared by sol-gel method, and their crystal structure investigated by Rietveld analysis. The phase compositions and cell parameters depend on the CeO2 content. Tetragonal phase is observed in Ce0.1Zr0.9O2 and Ce0.2Zr0.8O2 samples, while cubic phase is observed in the compositional range 0.7 less than or equal tox less than or equal to1. Therefore, both cubic and tetragonal phases have been found in the range 0.3 less than or equal tox less than or equal to0.6; the content of cubic phase increases with increasing x.

Abstract:The CexZr1-xO2 (x=0-1) composite oxides were prepared by sol-gel method, and then they were used as supportpr tp prepare PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts. The effect of Ce/Zr atomic ratio on the structure of crystalline phase, redox property and TWC catalytic activity of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxides and PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts were studied. The results show that phase structure of CexZr1-xO2 composite oxide depends on the CeO2 content. The different Ce/Zr atomic ratio affects the catalytic activity of PdO/CexZr1-xO2 catalysts much. In the reaction of NO-CO and CO-O-2, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalyst is the highest. However, the catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst is the highest in the reaction of CH4-O-2. The alpha: H-2-TPR peak is related probably to the NO-CO and CO-O-2 catalytic activity of PdO/Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalysts.
Effect of Preparation Method on the Surface and Redox Properties of Ce0.67zr0.33o2 Mixed Oxides

Abstract:Four types of Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 (CZC, CZH, CZM and CZS) mixed oxides were prepared by the coprecipitation, hydrothermal, microemulsion and sol–gel methods, respectively, and were characterized by the XRD, BET, SEM and TPR analyses. It is found that TPR of CeO2ZrO2 depends on two main factors, phase homogeneity and textural properties. By enhancing the homogeneity of the Ce and Zr atoms in the mixed oxides with appreciate surface area, CZS shows the best low-temperature reducibility. After calcinations at 950°C for 20h, however, the greatly reduced surface area results in the disappearance of a reduction of surface Ce4+, and only one peak remains in the TPR profile of CZS, which is an intrinsic feature of bulk oxygen reduction and depends on the material. Meanwhile, the phase segregation strongly affects the hydrogen uptake behavior of CZC and CZH after aging. The favorable thermal stability in both structural and textural properties brings a promise of the application of a reverse microemulsion synthesis to prepare CeO2ZrO2 mixed oxides to meet the increasingly stringent requirement of service life of three-way catalysts.

Abstract:A variety of CexSn1-xO2 mixed oxides has been synthesized and their structure and redox properties have been studied. The structure of CexSn1-xO2 mixed oxides depends on values of 'x' and calcination temperature. When x=1.0 similar to0.8, CexSn1-xO2 mixed oxides an in cubic phase; on decreasing x from 0.7 to 0.1, CexSn1-xO2 mixed oxides are observed Co have cubic and tetragonal mixed phases; and single SnO2 is in a tetragonal phase. Only small amounts of SnO2 can be introduced into the CeO2 lattice to form cubic phase, and excess SnO2 is in tetragonal phase. Low calcination temperatures favour formation of Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 solid solutions, while high calcination temperatures do not favour formation of solid solutions and lead to sample sinters. Combined with DTA result, we believe the Ce0.7Sn0.3O2 mixed oxides are formed during the decomposition of the dried sample at about 300 degreesC. The mixed oxides have three reduction peaks (alpha, beta and gamma). The peak alpha is attributed to the reduction of the easily reducible surface Sn4+. The peak beta is attributed to the overlapping peak of the reduction of bulk oxygen of SnO2 and the easily reducible surface Ce4+. The peak gamma is ascribed to the reduction of bulk CeO2. The intensity and temperature of reduction peaks are affected by x values and calcination temperatures.
Thermal Stability and Reductive Property of Cexzr1-Xo2 Solid Solution Doped Simultaneously by Fe, Mn or Fe, Cu

Abstract:CexZr1-O-x(2) Complex oxides doped by transition metal (Fe, Mn, Cu) were prepared by precipitation method. Thermal stability of samples was characterized by XRD, surface areas were measured by BET method and reductive property was characterized by TPR. The results show that MnO2 can be dispersed in solid solution after calcined at 1273 K, when the loading is 12%, while Fe and Cu is easy to separate from samples at this temperature. Samples doped simultaneously by Fe, Mn or Fe, Cu demonstrated high reactive property at low temperature. The starting reduction temperature are 413 and 373 K, respectively. TPR results also show a broad range of reductive temperature exists in these bi-metal doped samples.

Abstract:The PrxCe0.3-xZr0.7O2(x=0,0.1,0.2,0.3) mixed oxides were prepared by ammonia-aided co-precipitation.The structure and textural properties were characterized by XRD and BET,while the OSC performances were evaluated under both dynamic and static conditions.The addition of Pr prevented the phase separation of CeO2-ZrO2(CZ) after the hydrothermal ageing treatment by forming a pseudo cubic structure.The poor redox property of Pr in the Zr-rich structure contributed little to the total oxygen storage capacity.Proper doping amount of Pr(10%) modified the surface structure and therefore enhanced the dynamic oxygen storage capacity of CZ.

Abstract:Trivalent rare-earth (RE = La, Pr, Nd, Y)-doped CexZr1-xO2 (x = 0.4-0.6) solid solutions were synthesized via a urea hydrolysis-based hydrothermal method, followed by calcination at 1000 degrees C for 100 h. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) tests for the Cc LIII edge determine that the chemical valence of the Ce atom in either undoped or RE-doped CeO2-ZrO2 samples was mainly +4. The measurements of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) testify to the good compositional homogeneity for Ce, Zr, and RE atoms in both bulk and microdomain of the as-calcined CexZr1-x-yREyO2-z (x = 0.4-0.6, y = 0-0.16, and z is the number of oxygen vacancy) samples. The characterizations with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vis-Raman demonstrate the high structural homogeneity for ternary CeO2-ZrO2-RE2O3 solid solutions after calcination at 1000 degrees C for 100 h. The aliovalent substitution of the RE3+ ion for the Ce4+ or Zr4+ ion has been concluded to stabilize the pseudo cubic t"-structure, to improve the surface area and to enhance the oxygen storage capacity (OSC) for the binary CeO2-ZrO2 system. The reducibility of the as-calcined CexZr1-x-yREyO2-z, by CO seems dependent upon the nature and concentration of the RE dopant. The highest CO-OSC value obtained in this work appeared for Ce0.5Zr0.42Nd0.08O2-z in 558 mu mol CO g(-1) at 700 degrees C, while the undoped samples gave a value of less than 460 mu mol CO g(-1).
High-temperature Solid State Synthesis and Characterization in Magnetic and Transporting Properties of Zn_xFe_(3-x)O_4 Powder

Abstract:Zn-doped magnetite Fe3O4 samples were prepared at different doped concentrations and annealed at high temperature in ambient air and N2 respectively.X-ray diffraction(XRD)results showed that samples annealed in air were oxidized and the consequent products were partially in α-Fe2O3 form.While for the samples annealed in N2,ZnxFe3-xO4 products of high purity were obtained.The doping of Zn2+ on the tetrahedral sites(A sites)changed the valence distribution of Fe2+ ions on the octahedral sites(B sites).The electron transporting mechanism remained to be variable range hopping(VRH)conduction.Measurement results of magnetic properties indicated that the super exchange coupling interaction between Fe2+ ions was affected by the low doping concentration of Zn2+ ions in the crystal,and the negative magnetoresistivity of ZnxFe3-xO4 was improved as well.

Abstract:Ti1-xFexO2 nanocrystals were prepared by sol-gel method at low temperature. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Ti1-xFexO2 nanocrystals are granulars with an average grain size of 3.5 nm (TiO2), 3.0 nm (Ti0.9Fe0.1O2), and 2.8 nm ( Ti0.75Fe0.25O2). It is found that the doping of Fe3+ ions results in the lattice distortion of TiO2. Anatase phase is in Ti1-xFexO2 nanocrystals. XPS result shows that the element Ti in the Ti1-xFexO2 sample is tetravalent while the Fe element in the Ti1-xFexO2 sample is trivalent. In IR spectra of Ti0.75Fe0.25O2, both the TiO2 surface associated OH group stretching vibration and flexural vibrations blue shifted, indicating the presence of the chemical bonding action between Fe3+ and TiO2. The absorption of Ti-O-Ti stretching vibration blue shifted, owing to the presence of Fe-O-Ti stretching vibration, indicating Fe3+ ions doping into the crystal lattice of TiO2 may occupy the Ti4+ position in the crystal lattice. The mechanism of low temperature sol-gel preparation of Ti1-xFeO2 nanocrystals was investigated.

Abstract:Ce0.5Zr0.5O2, Ce0.5Zr0.2Mn0.3O2 and Ce0.5Mn0.5O2 were prepared by citric acid sol–gel method. The effect of manganese on the structural and redox properties of ceria-based mixed oxides was investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyses, temperature-programmed reduction and catalytic activity evaluation in the presence of excess O2. The results showed that some Mn cations could enter into the ceria lattice to form solid solutions. Mn3O4 appeared due to the instability of the mixed oxides with increment of the Mn doping ratio while another oxide Mn2O3 is detected in the physical mixture of ceria and manganese oxide. These Mn-doped mixed oxides, especially Ce0.5Mn0.5O2, presented better catalytic activities than Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 and even Pt-loaded catalyst for total oxidation of C3H8 and oxidative sorption of NO in the presence of excess oxygen. The oxidation ability of Mn and the strong interaction between Mn and Ce were suggested to promote the oxygen storage/transport capacity of the mixed oxides as well as reactive adsorption of nitric oxide and hydrocarbons.
Preparation of Cex Zr1-x-AI mixed oxides and investigation of the palladium-only three-way catalytic performance

Abstract:The CexZr1-x-Al mixed oxides were prepared by the sol-gel method and the super-critical dryness method.The samples were characterized by means of XRD and BET techniques,and the three-way catalytic performance of their supported-Pd catalysts was also investigated.It was found that the samples calcined at 1 100 ℃ for 4 h still had large specific surface area(>95 m2·g-1) and no α-Al2O3 was formed.Based on the TEM and the investigation of catalytic performance,the catalysts containing cerium-zirconium solid solution had good catalytic activity and thermal stability,and the three-way catalytic performance of Pd/Ce0.75Zr0.25-Al was best.The catalyst Pd/Ce0.75Zr0.25-Al had low light-up temperatures(T20%) of 140 ℃,268 ℃,340 ℃ and 175 ℃ for CO,C3H6,NO and NO2,respectively,and the temperatures at which the reactants were converted fully were only raised by 10-20 ℃ after thermal aging.

Abstract:CeO2–ZrO2–La2O3 (CZL) mixed oxides were prepared by citric acid sol–gel method. The as-received gel was calcined at 500, 700, 900 and 1050°C to obtain the so-called C5, C7, C9 and CK, respectively. The C5, C7 and C9 powders were impregnated with H2PtCl6 and then calcined at 500°C to prepare P5C5, P5C7 and P5C9, respectively. The impregnated CK powders were calcined at 500, 700 and 900°C to prepare P5CK, P7CK and P9CK, respectively. The XRD and XPS analyses show that the surface distribution of Pt is evidently influenced by the structural and textural properties of the support. The CO adsorption followed by FTIR reveals that the dispersion and the chemisorption sites of Pt are reduced as the calcination temperature of CZL support increases. The chemisorption ability of the CK samples is even completely deactivated. The encapsulation mechanism, which has been applied to explain the so-called strong metal–support interaction (SMSI) after reductive treatment, is introduced here to demonstrate the abnormal observations though the samples were prepared in oxidative atmosphere. The HRTEM results also confirm this explanation. The effects of oxygen vacancies, the chemisorption sites on the Pt surface and Pt/Ce interfacial sites on the three-way catalytic activities are discussed.
A facile mixed complex synthesis method for perovskite oxides toward electrocatalytic oxygen reduction

Abstract:The perovskite-type La(0.5+x)Sr(0.5-x)FeO3-δ (x = 0.00, 0.10, 0.20) oxides for the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) were synthesized by a facile reaction-EDTA/citric acid mixed complex sol-gel method. The cubic single-phase perovskite structure of the as-prepared oxides is demonstrated using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy/selected area electron diffraction (TEM-SAED), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations were also conducted for the perovskite-type La(0.5+x)Sr(0.5-x)FeO3-δ (x = 0.00, 0.10, 0.20) oxides. Furthermore, the electrochemical ORR properties of the as-prepared oxides in alkaline media were studied, with the oxides exhibiting good electrocatalytic ORR performance.
Structure and Oxygen Mobility of Ce1-xZrxO2 Prepared by Citric Acid Sol-gel Method

Abstract:The structure and oxygen mobility of Ce1-xZrO2 (0 <= x <= 1) samples prepared by citric acid sol-gel method were characterized by XRF, XRD, Raman, XPS, Ar+ etching-XPS and H-2-TPR. The data showed that the crystalline structure of Ce1-xZrxO2 can significantly affect the oxygen mobility. When x <= 0.1.5, the samples were found to exist as cubic Ce-Zr-O solid solutions. An increase in x resulted in a shrinking of the crystal unit volume, an increasing in the number of oxygen vacancies, and an increasing in the oxygen mobility as well. When x > 0.15, Ce1-xZrxO2 existed in a mixed phases of tetragonal and cubic Ce-Zr-O solid solutions; the percentage of tetragonal phase increased, oxygen vacancies decreased and oxygen mobility reduced with increasing x in these samples. Abstract:Abstract In the present investigation, two sets of pure and substituted ferrite- and manganite-based mixed oxides were prepared within the stoichiometric formula $$A_{1 - x} A^{\prime}_{x} B_{1 - x} B^{\prime}_{x} O_{3}$$ A 1 - x A x ′ B 1 - x B x ′ O 3 , where A = Bi or La, A ′ = Sr, B = Fe or Mn, B′ = Co, x = 0 or 0.2, by calcination at 700 °C (for 1 h) of corresponding metal citrate xerogels. Materials thus obtained were examined for bulk and surface characteristics using X-ray diffractometry, ex situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and N 2 sorptiometry. Their redox catalytic activity was evaluated towards a 2-propanol dehydrogenation reaction in the gas phase by employing in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results obtained could help reveal that (1) the presence of Bi (versus La) and Mn (versus Fe) facilitated the formation of polymeric crystalline phases assuming lattice-charge imbalance (due to excess positive charge), (2) the surface exposure of the excess positive charge was manifested in the generation of Mn sites having various oxidation states ≥ 3+, (3) the consequent development of visible light absorptions at 498–555 nm suggested occurrence of electron double-exchange facilitated by the formation of Mn n+ –O 2− –Mn (n+1)+ Zener-type linkages, and (4) the exposure of such linkages at the surface warrants the establishment of the electron-mobile environment necessitated by the redox catalytic activity. Moreover, the relationship between the alcohol dehydrogenation activity and the magnitude of the lattice-charge imbalance (i.e., the net excess positive charge) of the catalysts was highlighted.

Abstract:The structures and reduction behaviour of iron-zirconium oxides prepared by the coprecipitation method have been studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), BET surface-area measurements and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The structure of the iron-zirconium oxides is severely affected by the composition. For iron-zirconium oxides with different iron contents, the chemical states of the Fe3+ cations are quite different, and hence the reduction behaviour of these Fe3+ cations is quite different too. The various intermediates formed during the successive reduction steps of the iron-zirconium oxides were determined using TPR combined with in situ Mossbauer spectroscopy. For the samples with low iron content (less than or equal to 20 atom%), Fe3+ cations were doped in the lattice of cubic zirconia and were difficult to reduce to Fe-O By contrast, for the samples with high iron content (much greater than 70 atom%), Zr4+ cations were doped in the lattice of alpha-Fe2O3 and the reduction of the Fe3+ cations to Fe-O was easier than that of the samples with low iron content.

Abstract:Metal peroxide species are the active sites in lots of solid-state and enzyme catalytic systems. With density functional calculations, the configurations of peroxide and superoxide anions in Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite were first resolved. The presence of superoxide anion was validated, which is less stabilized than the peroxide anion, especially at higher temperatures. It acts as the precursor to the active peroxide anion. Raman frequencies of these two species were analyzed considering 18O/16O isotope effects. The present results are in fine agreement with previous theoretical and experimental results.

Abstract:Defects in cerium oxide, especially oxygen vacancies, play an essential role in its versatile applications and are efficiently preserved at ambient conditions in a non-equilibrium process. Herein, defective CeO2-x with heterogeneous structure was synthesized by high-energy laser melting, where a large amount of oxygen vacancies and Ce3+ could be introduced, leading to improved visible light absorption, narrowed bandgap and room temperature ferromagnetism. Moreover, this laser melted CeO2-x exhibits significantly enhanced low-temperature oxidation behaviors than the counterpart prepared by normal hydrogen-reduction. This unique redox performance could be attributed to the intragranular diffusion at the boundaries of assembled nanocrystallites. This method paves a new way for introducing unique multi-functions in oxide ceramics.
