Abstract:Effects of the isothermal crystallization temperatures of poly(vinylidene fluoride), T(IC,PVDF), on polymorphic crystalline structure, phase transition, fractional crystallization, and enzymatic degradation of poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) in crystalline/crystalline blends have been investigated. The crystal modifications of PBA can be regulated by T(IC,PVDF). Lower T(IC,PVDF) (e.g., 80 °C) facilitates the formation of PBA α crystals in both the isothermal and nonisothermal melt crystallizations and also favors the β-to-α phase transition of PBA upon annealing at elevated temperatures. This might be attributable to the decreased equilibrium melting temperature of PBA when T(IC,PVDF) is decreased. Higher T(IC,PVDF) is favorable for the fractional crystallization of PBA, which tends to segregate in the interlamellar regions of the PVDF matrix under these conditions. PBA shows faster enzymatic degradation in the blends with a lower T(IC,PVDF) than those with a higher T(IC,PVDF), attributable to the preferential formation of α crystals at a lower T(IC,PVDF). This study provides a new method to control the crystal modification and physical properties of polymorphic polymers in their blend systems.

Abstract:The crystalline structure of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) have been found to quite depend on the crystallization temperatures (T(c)s), especially in the range of 100-120 degrees C, which is usually used as the crystallization temperature for the industrial process of PLLA. The analysis of wide-angle X-ray diffraction and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy revealed that 110 degrees C is a critical temperature for PLLA crystallization. At T-c < 110 degrees C and T-c >= 110 degrees C, the alpha' and alpha crystals were mainly produced, respectively. Besides, the structural feature of the alpha'-form was illustrated, and it was found that the alpha'-form has the larger unit cell dimension than that of the a-form. Moreover, the crystallization kinetics of the alpha' and alpha crystals are different, resulting in the discontinuousness of the curves of spherulite radius growth rate (G) versus T-c and the half time in the melt-crystallization (t(1/2)) versus T-c investigated by Polarized optical microscope and Differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Abstract:High-resolution FT-IR spectroscopy has been used for the first time to characterize the variation of the unit cell dimensions of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). In combination with the unit cell parameters of HDPE measured at-different temperatures by Swan using wide-angle X-ray diffraction, the relationship between the rocking band shift (730 cm(-1)) and the change of the unit cell volume of HDPE has been established.

Abstract:Amorphous flexible (co)polyesters with low glass transition temperature (T g) are very desirable in impact modification of biodegradable brittle polymers and synthesis of biodegradable elastomers. However, most flexible polyesters and binary copolyesters made from linear diacid(s) and diol(s) are crystalline polymers. In order to investigate the effect of monomer structure on the crystallization and T g of such copolyesters, novel ternary or multiple flexible copolyesters containing various structural units were designed and synthesized in this study, and characterized with 1HNMR, GPC, DSC, WAXD, TGA and tensile testing. Introducing aromatic diacid (especially asymmetric one) or short-chain branched diol is favorable to depress copolyester crystallization, and leads to higher T g at the same time. From easily crystallized to fully amorphous copolyesters with low T g were successfully synthesized by adopting different combination of structural units. In addition, the existence of aromatic structural unit in copolyesters is helpful to improve their tensile properties.

Abstract:High-resolution cryogenic Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to measure the variation of the unit cell volume of ethylene-octene copolymers (EG) in this study. It was found that both the comonomer content and thermal history have great influence on the crystal lattice structure of ethylene polymers. With the increase of the octene content, the unit cell volume of EG copolymers expand, and quenching treatment favors the increase of distance between two molecular chains in orthorhombic crystals and causes more crystal lattice deformation. Compared with traditional wide-angle X-ray diffraction method, high-resolution cryogenic FTIR spectroscopy, as a powerful technique for measuring the changes of crystal lattice structures of polyethylene and ethylene copolymers, can provide more accurate information on the characterization of the changes of crystal lattice structures of semicrystalline polymers. Abstract:The crystallization behavior of crystalline-crystalline (CC) diblock copolymers has been shown to be dependent on the crystallization temperature and relative molecular size leach component The behavior of copolymers with similar crystallization temperatures is controlled by the block with the larger weight fraction and solvent-polymer interactions Using samples of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly (epsilon-caprolacione) (PEO-b-PCL), dilute solution crystallization methods were investigated to determine their role in crystallization of CC copolymers A single crystal of one block, either PEO or PCL, (the first block), crystallized first with the second block segregated to the crystal basal surfaces For the first time, solvent quality and homopolymer seeds were in to manipulate crystallization of the block with the smaller weight fraction to crystallize first and form the lamellar single crystal In addition, subsequent crystallization of the tethered chains (the second block) on the surface was also observed, depending upon the molecular weight of the second block and crystallization conditions These crystallites formed by the second block exhibited preferred orientations on the crystal surface as observed by electron diffraction It is believed that this orientation was induced by "soft" epitaxy between the fold surfaces of the adjacent single crystals of the first block formed by the in crystallization.

Abstract:The present study investigates the mechanical properties of partially crystalline Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone between the glass transition and the cold crystallization. Biaxial tension, uniaxial tension, and DMA experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of temperature-induced crystallization on mechanical properties, and three stiffening behaviors are observed. Firstly, a 'U' type mechanical property is observed for all three experiments with first softening and then significant stiffening behavior with increasing temperature. Secondly, stiffening also occurs during low strain rate tests but not in higher strain rate tests. Thirdly, the stiffening behavior of the anisotropic film shows orientation dependence. Crystallinity evolution is predicted by the Nakaruma non-isothermal crystallization kinetics with optimized parameters, with which we demonstrate and explain that the stiffening behaviors are connected to the onset of crystallization. Therefore, the conclusion provides a new tool to approach and distinguish extrinsic and intrinsic properties during characterization, promoting future implementation for constitutive modeling and corresponding simulation that could replicate the influence of temperature-induced crystallization.

Effect of Temperature and Comonomer Content on Thermal Behavior and Crystallization Property of the Propylene–Ethylene Random Copolymers

Abstract:The effects of ethylene units content and crystallization temperature on the conformations, and the thermal and crystallization behavior were investigated by a combination of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The characterization of FTIR spectroscopy proves that the longer helical conformation sequences of the propylene-ethylene random (PER) samples decrease, whereas the shorter helical conformation sequences increase with the increase in ethylene units content. The increase of the shorter helical conformation sequences is favorable for the formation of the -phase in the crystals. A group of broad endothermic peaks can be seen clearly in the DSC curves of PER copolymers, which may be associated with the melting of mixtures of the - and -forms in the crystals. The melting point, crystallization temperature, and crystallinity degree of the PER copolymers decrease with the increase in ethylene units contents. Three typical melting peaks of the PER copolymers crystallized isothermally between 80 degrees C and 130 degrees C were observed. The two higher melting peaks result from melting of the - and -phase in the crystals, whereas the materials crystallized on quenching give the lowest peak. The WAXD results confirm that the PER copolymers crystallize from the melt, as mixtures of and forms, in a wide temperature range. The critical number lim of the crystallizable units for the -form increases with the increase in crystallization temperature for PER copolymers, which is favorable for the formation of the phases. The amount of -form increases with the increase in crystallization temperature at the expense of its component, then reaches a maximum value at the crystallization temperature of 115 degrees C, and finally decreases with further increase in the crystallization temperature.

Abstract:By means of DSC and WAXD methods,Crystallization and crystal structure of poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing meta phenyl links were studied.WAXD results showed that crystallized from both glassy and melting state,only one crystal form of PEKMK was found with unit cell parameters of a=0 767 2nm, b =0 6149nm,and c =1 599nm.DSC results from different crystallization showed that double melting peaks (lower and upper peaks)exits.Lower peak had only 4% to 7% of all heat of fusion which originated from random lamellae produced at low crystallization temperature.At high crystallization temperature,lower peak transformed into upper peak with equillibrium melting point of 295℃.

Abstract:To investigate how the Molecular weight of poly(ether ether ketone) affected the crystallization behavior, the nucleophilic reaction synthetic technology was used to obtain poly(ether ether ketone) of different molecular weights and the trend of the molecular weight varying with the duration of the reaction. Furthermore, the influence molecular weight has brought to the morphology and the melting behavior was investigated by means of FTIR, OM, WAXD, and DSC and thoroughly discussed in theory. Results showed that with the increase of the molecular weight, the degree of crystalline perfection and the lamellar thickness descended as well as the radius of spherulite diminished due to the difficulty of the chain mobility. Moreover, the melting temperature mounted up at first then decreased with the growing of the molecular weight indicating how the lamellar thickness and the melting heat per unit volume affected the melting behavior together. Abstract:The homoepitaxial crystallization in the films of a thermotropic liquid crystalline chloro-ply(aryl ether ketone) is studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED). The homoepitaxy takes place in the temperature range 330-320 degreesC, in which a highly-ordered smectic crystalline phase of the copolymer with a single-crystal-like banded structure is formed during the cooling process from the isotropic melt. The homoepitaxial crystallizations with angles of 32 degrees and 122 degrees between the two b axes are the major populations observed, and possess epitaxial contact planes of (100)(I)-(210)(II) and (010)(I)-(210)(II); respectively.

Abstract:The crystallization behavior of two kinds of commercial poly(propylene-co-ethylene)s (PPE1, PPE2) with similar average molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, isotacticity and copolymerized ethylene unit content and their fractions was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) techniques. The results indicate that the PPE1 isothermally crystallized films possess thicker and less cross-hatched lamellar structure than those of the PPE2. As for the fractionated samples, the thin films of low temperature (≤90°C) fractions (PPE1-80, PPE2-80) of both PPE1 and PPE2 exhibit similar crystallization behavior, while for the high temperature (≥95°C) fractions (PPE1-108, PPE2-108), the crystalline morphology has marked differences. Compared with PPE2-108, the PPE1-108 isothermally crystallized thin films possess thicker lamellae and less cross-hatched lamellar structure, while for the fibrous crystal number, the former is less than that of the latter. The main reason to create the crystallization behavior differences between the two PPEs and their fractions is due to the effect of molecular chain structure, i.e. the different distribution of copolymerized ethylene unit in polypropylene chains.

Abstract:The dynamic process of crystal structure change during isothermal crystallization, cooling and heating of linear polyethylene with different molecular weight and polydispersity was followed by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WARD) measurement. From the WARD data, variations of unit cell parameters a and b and changes in crystallinity were estimated. During isothermal crystallization, both cell parameters were found to decrease with time, suggesting that the crystal structure was becoming more perfect. With an increase in molecular weight or crystallization temperature, the rate of crystal perfection and the attainable crystallinity were found to decrease. This behavior can be explained by the formation of thicker lamellae, which probably have a lower degree of defects and a reduced surface-to-volume ratio in the crystals. Upon cooling and heating, the cell parameters appeared to contract and expand accordingly. The thermal contraction and expansion of parameter a is considerably larger than that of b , which probably results from the weaker intra-chain interactions along the a -axis, which is perpendicular to the spherulite growth direction.

Abstract:Crystallization behavior and resultant crystalline structure of a series of temperature-rising elution-fractionated specimen of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst-synthesized propylene-ethylene random copolymer were studied by DSC, WAXD and AFM. The experimental results indicate that both crystallization temperature and propylene sequence length exhibit great influence on the crystallization behavior and crystalline structure of the copolymer. It was found that the ethylene co-monomers acting as point defects inserted into the polypropylene chains play an important role in the formation of γ-iPP. As the co-monomer content increases, the crystallizable sequence length of iPP decreases, which produces an appropriate condition for its γ crystallization. At the same time, the existence of chain defects leads to a lower crystallinity of the copolymer and imperfection of the resultant crystals. For each individual sample with certain propylene sequence length or ethylene content, the increment of γ-iPP crystal content with increasing crystallization temperature demonstrates that higher crystallization temperature is in favor of the γ-iPP crystallization. Pure γ-iPP crystals have been got in samples with propylene sequence length lower than 21 under suitable crystallization conditions.

Abstract:Poly(aryl ether ketone ketone)s (PEKK) was a high-performance engineering plastics, By means of Wide Angle X-ray Diffraction (WAXD) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) methods, PEKK samples crystallized in solvent induction, from glass state and from melting state were studied, Crystal forms I and II for PEKK were found, The formation of crystal form II was dependent on thermal history and solvent induction, and this form II had melting point 10 degrees C or so lower than that of form I crystallized from glass state, All PEKK samples had low melting peaks which were relevant to the polarization of PEKK molecular chain, while they had nothing to do with thermal history, The heat of fusion for PEKK low melting peaks accounted for,percentage of 2 to 10 or so of the whole heat of fusion, And PEKK has its equilibrium melting point of 409 degrees C.

Abstract:This paper aims to characterize and model the mechanical behavior of partially crystalline Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone with an emphasis on temperature softening, strain softening, and strain hardening behavior. Uniaxial tension and planar tension tests, with a designed testing apparatus, were conducted with strain rates from 0.0001 s−1 to 0.1 s−1 and temperatures from 25 °C to 160 °C. A modified Oxford-Glass-Rubber constitutive model is proposed with a modified Eyring dashpot to capture the strain softening behavior and a plateau stress dependent hyperelastic spring to capture the strain hardening behavior. The model shows good capability in predicting stress strain curves at small and large deformation with an average fitting coefficient R2 of 0.93. Further application of the model into finite element simulation in more extreme conditions would be appropriate.

Abstract:Different PEEKs were prepared from the system at one-hour interval under 320 ℃ by nucleophilic reaction.The influences of the molecular weight of poly(ether ether ketone) on its crystallization behavior and thermal behavior were investigated by characterizations of FT-IR、XRD、DSC、OM、and TG.The results showed that the crystallization degree and the lamellar thickness of PEEKs were descended when the molecular weights was increased.The radiu of spherulitet diminished due to the difficulty of the chain mobility.Moreover,the melting temperature rised at initial stage and then decreased with the growing of the molecular weight.
Crystalline Structure of Polypropylene Catalloys and Related Influence Factors

Abstract:Crystalline structures of two types of polypropylene catalloys (PP-c) containing different ethylene contents were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). When the PEP40 containing higher ethylene content crystallizes isothermally in the temperature range investigated, double melting peaks appear in each endotherm region. WAXD measurement evidences that the behavior results from the coexistence of alpha-form and beta-form of PP crystals. The calculated results show that the beta-crystal content in PEP40 depends on the crystallization temperature and the beta-crystal content of them crystallized at 124 degrees C approaches the maximum. In addition, the thermal treatment at 220 degrees C greatly increases the beta-crystal content in PEP40 samples and induces the existence of beta-crystal in PEP20 samples. Compared with those being treated thermally at 200 degrees C, the PEP20 samples crystallized isothermally at 124 degrees C after being treated thermally at 220 degrees C for 30 min exhibit smaller crystalline size and clear morphology of beta-spherulite.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)/cellulose (CELL) blends prepared from solutions in dimethyl sulfoxide-paraformaldehyde were studied with X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. PEG in the blend was found to be crystalline at room temperature. However, when the temperature was raised to PEG's melting point, PEG blended with CELL did not melt into the liquid state as in the case of pure PEG but changed to an amorphous solid state. infrared spectroscopy investigations suggested that there were quite strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds formed between PEG and CELL in the blends. PEG's molecules probably are tied to the semirigid CELL chains so strongly by the hydrogen bonds that they cannot change to a liquid state but change to the amorphous state by thermal vibration at high temperatures.

Abstract:The changes of conformation and crystalline structure of long chain branched isotactic polypropylene (LCB-iPP) under different crystallization temperatures and the effects of their special molecular architecture on the crystallization behavior were investigated by a combination of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In these polymers, long chain branching was introduced via in situ polymerization of polypropylene and an asymmetric diene monomer using the metallocene catalyst technology. Through the characterization of the specific IR band variation, it was proved that the conformational orders of helical sequences of LCB-iPP show great changes in different crystallization temperature ranges. In lower crystallization temperature range (100–130°C), the intensities of all regular helical conformation bands of LCB-iPP increase with the increasing crystallization temperature and the regular helical conformation bands with more monomer units increase faster than that with less monomer units. In higher crystallization temperature range (130–150°C), the intensities of all regular helical conformation bands of LCB-iPP decrease with the increasing crystallization temperature and the regular helical conformation bands with more monomer units decrease faster than that with less monomer units. The results of WAXD and DSC showed that LCB-iPP crystallizes from the melt as a mixture of α and γ forms. The content of the γ form increases with the increasing crystallization temperature, reaches a maximum value at 130°C, and then decreases with a further increase of the temperature. At the same time, the crystallization of γ form is favored by the presence of the LCB structure of iPP. Moreover, the transitional temperatures of different helical conformations and crystallization structures of LCB-iPP show obvious correlations.
