Abstract:ZnS/ZnSe stratified grating wave filter fabricated by using vacuum coating technique on BK7 glass waveguide is reported and at room temperature optical controlling switch modulation of the grating wave filter has been realized by means of prism coupling with waveguide under Ar+ laser pulse. The origin of the optical nonlinearity is attributed to band filling caused by the nonlinear absorption of the material and reflection occurring among the multilayer films.

Abstract:We report on a theoretical demonstration of optical bistability in periodic layered media, particularly in long-period GaAs-AlAs superlattices. The proposed structure consists of a periodic multilayer system, as opposed to previously demonstrated nonlinear bistable devices which employed Fabry-Perot etalons. The optical resonance effect which is essential for bistable devices is, in our case, induced by a refractive index modulation. The nonlinear active medium is distributed in the whole structure rather than placed between the two mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. It is shown by a complete calculation of wave propagation in the periodic nonlinear medium that a multiple valued feature appears in the structure's nonlinear reflectivity spectrum. The input/output characteristics of the structure exhibit bistable hysteresis similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon. Both the reflection and the transmission modes are analyzed. The intensity threshold for bistability is shown to be as low as 9 kW/cm2 for a 30-period GaAs-AlAs superlattice of a thickness of about 4-mu-m. The characteristics of this type of device are discussed and compared to those based on Fabry-Perot etalons.

Abstract:Ultrafast optical bistability was observed in a planar optical waveguide made with a 2,9,16,23-tetraoctadecanoylamido-substituted vanadyl phthalocyanine-doped polystyrene film. Input-output curves with hysteresis characteristics were measured with laser pulses of 60-ps pulse width at 532 nm. The switchup and switchdown times were less than 10 and 20 ps, respectively. Abstract:The excitonic nonlinearities in II-VI wide gap semiconductors have recently become an interesting research topic. Andersen et al.1 studied the saturating absorption of excitonic resonance in ZnSe single crystal films and (Zn, Mn)Se superlattices, which they attributed to Coulombic screening for the case of ZnSe film or a wide-well (Zn,Mn)Se quantum well structure at 77 K, and the Coulombic screening and phase space filling for a narrow-well structure. Gribkovskii et al.2 have observed the increase of excitonic absorption optical bistability in ZnSe film and attributed it to excitonic broadening and gap renormalization for the nonlinear mechanism. We report the first observation of optical bistability in ZnSe/ZnS MQWs grown by MOCVD on CaF2 substrates.

Abstract:The excitonic optical nonlinearities in II-VI semiconductor thin films and multiple quantum wells (MQWs) are much complicated than those of GaAs MQWs because the wider band gap and smaller excitons of II-VI semiconductor materials. We report here the observations of dynamic optical bistabilities in ZnSe/ZnS MQWs at low temperature caused by excitonic optical nonlinearity.

Abstract:Optical bistability occurs when the effects of nonlinear behavior of materials cause hysteresis in the transmission and the reflection of a device. An optical bistable device based on one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide is designed and fabricated. Doped semiconductor CdSxSe1−x glass, which has large nonlinear refractive index coefficient and fast nonlinear responding time, is used. The threshold light intensity of the optical bistability is 1.65×105W/cm2 and the optical switching time is 63ps.

Abstract:Optical bistability device based on nonlinear one-dimensional photonic crystals is designed and manufactured. The device has 20 periods and is made from ZnS and ZnSe layers alternately. When the incident power density reach threshold power density 1.0 × 105 W/cm2, the Ar ion laser, whose wavelength is 514.5 nm, is shifted out of the optical band gap of the one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals, so an optical switch is made. It also can be made into an optical bistability device. The threshold power density of the optical bistability is 1.38 × 105 W/cm2 and its switching time is about 100 ps in experiment. The experimental results are in good accordance with the theoretical ones.

Abstract:Optical bistability has attracted much attention due to its enormous potentials in all-optical operation and signal processing. However, the weak nonlinear responses typically require huge pump power to fulfill the threshold of the optical bistability, thus hindering the real applications. In this study, we propose an efficient optical bistable metamaterial that composes multi-layered Ga 2 O 3 -SiC-Ag metal-dielectric nanostructures. We not only achieve the substantial field enhancement by utilizing the epsilon – near - zero (ENZ) with SiC-Ag thin layers, but also incorporate the SiC material leveraging its significant optical nonlinear coefficient. In the structural design, the introduction of Ga 2 O 3 layers facilitate the light field concentration, contributing to the further reduction in threshold power for optical bistability, and also help to improve the physical and chemical stability of the device. The influences of the thickness and length of the ENZ layer on the optical bistability are systematically investigated using the finite element method. The results demonstrate that optical bistability becomes more pronounced with the increase of the thickness and length of ENZ layer, exhibiting a bistability switching threshold as low as~10 -6 W/cm 2 in the telecommunication band. Compared with the previously reported optical bistability based on ENZ mechanism, it shows a significant reduction by 9 orders of magnitude, demonstrating great application potentials in the fields of semiconductor devices, and photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:We have measured the nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refractive index changes in ZnSe''ZnS multiple quantum wells at low temperature. The largest change of nonlinear refractive index is 0. 012 and corresponding n2 is 7x1Ocm2IW. The nonlinear mechanism are attributed to exciton band broadening and phase space filling of exciton states. With different excitation wavelengths we have demonstrated the dynamic optical bistabilities in ZnSe/ZnS MQWs.

Abstract:We have investigated the optical bistability behavior based on an electromagnetically induced reflection (EIR) effect in a compound metallic grating consisting of subwavelength slits and Kerr nonlinear nanocavities embedded in a metallic film. The theoretical and simulation results show that a narrow peak in the broad reflection dip possesses a red-shift with increasing the refractive index of coupled nanocavities. Importantly, we have obtained an obvious optical bistability with threshold intensity about ten times lower than that of metallic grating coated by nonlinear material. The results indicate that our structure may find excellent applications for nonlinear plasmonic devices, especially optical switches and modulators.

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of optical bistable switching in a combined distributed-feedback/Fabry–Perot structure. The sample had a high switching contrast with almost zero reflectivity in the on-state. A turnoff time as short as 4 ns was measured. The threshold power for bistability was about 2 mW. Bistable switching with the memory effect and a potential application for all-optical signal regeneration were demonstrated.

Abstract:Semimagnetic semiconductor Zn1-xMnxSe (x = 0.01) exhibits a broad-band absorption in the region of the band edge. The absorption is easily blue-shifted with the pump-probe system. Optical bistability is obtained for the first time in a wider range of excitation wavelengths. The origins of the nonlinear and bistable effects are discussed.

Abstract:The nonlinear waveguide with single mode was fabricated on CdSSe doped glass by ion-exchange technique and the grating couplers of the waveguide were made on the glass waveguide by ion-etching method. A mode-locked double frequency Nd:YAG laser of 532 nm, with 180 ps pulse width, was used to measure characteristics of grating coupling beam into nonlinear planar waveguide. All-optical bistable phenomenon coupled by grating into waveguide was observed in the experiment. The switching time of the rise and fall of the optical bistability is about 80 ps and 45 ps, respectively.

Abstract:We have numerically studied the optical bistability in guided-mode resonance-assisted nonlinear grating nanostructure. A low-index slot is introduced to significantly improve the confinement of light in nonlinear material. In this way, the proposed novel configuration possesses low-threshold optical switching intensity (similar to 3 MW/cm(2)), which is about 58 times lower than that of typical nonlinear grating nanostructure without the low-index slot. This bistability study provides an effective method to reduce the threshold of optical switching intensity and thus can be applied in optical logic, optical computation, and all-optical memory. Abstract:Optical bistability opens up a promising avenue toward various optical nonlinear functions analogous to their electrical counterparts, such as switches, logic gates, and memory. Free-space bistable devices have unique advantages in large-scale integration. However, most proposed free-space schemes for optical bistability have limitations in one or more aspects of low contrast ratio, compromised compatibility, slow switching speed, and bulk size. Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials have recently shown an ultrafast and giant optical nonlinearity within a subwavelength scale, potentially overcoming these obstacles. Using large-mobility indium-doped cadmium oxide (CdO) as the ENZ material, we numerically demonstrate two efficient schemes for high-contrast optical bistability within a deep subwavelength size based on the ENZ mode and the Berreman mode. The ENZ wavelength can be optically tuned with a typical time scale of sub-picoseconds, giving rise to a switchable bistability between the near-zero state and the high-reflection state. Our work contributes to the advances on compact and ultrafast all-optical signal processing.
Polarization-tunable nonlinear absorption patterns from saturated absorption to reverse saturated absorption in anisotropic GeS flake and an application of all-optical switching

Abstract:Due to the unique anisotropic chemical and physical properties, two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, such as IV-VI monochalcogenides with puckered honeycomb structure, have received considerable interest recently. Among the IV-VI layered MX (M = Ge, Sn; X = Se, S) compounds, germanium sulfide (GeS) stands out for its strongest anisotropic thermal conductivities and figure-of-merit values. Additionally, the layer-independent direct energy bands (Eg ∼1.6 eV, E1 ∼2.1 eV) of GeS flake provide excellent insights into further applications as visible photodetectors. Herein, the polarization-tunable nonlinear absorption (NA) patterns of GeS flake have been systematically investigated. Specifically, both the polarization-dependent Raman spectroscopy and the linear absorption (LA) spectroscopy were employed to characterize the lattice orientation and absorption edges of the 251-nm GeS flake. Considering the low damage threshold of GeS flake, the GeS/graphene heterostructure was fabricated to increase the threshold without changing the nonlinear properties of GeS. Our NA results demonstrated that a 600-nm femtosecond laser with different polarizations would excite the saturated-absorption (SA) effect along armchair and reverse-saturated-absorption (RSA) effect along zigzag in the GeS/graphene heterostructure. Moreover, the function of the polarization-based GeS/graphene heterostructure all-optical switch was experimentally verified. Notably, thanks to the polarization-dependent NA patterns (SA/RSA) of GeS, the "ON" and "OFF" states of the all-optical switch can be accomplished by high and low transmittance states of continuous-wave laser (532 nm, 80 nW), whose state can be controlled by the polarization of femtosecond switching laser (600 nm, 35 fs, 500 Hz, 12 GW cm−2). The ON/OFF ratio can achieve up to 17% by changing polarization, compared with the ratios of 3.0% by increasing the incident power of switching light in our experiment. The polarization-tunable absorption patterns introduced in this work open up real perspectives for the next-generation optoelectronic devices based on GeS/graphene heterostructure.

Abstract:We designed and manufactured an optical bistability waveguide device based on nonlinear one-dimensional photonic crystal used CdS_xSe_(1-x) doped glass. This kind of semiconductor doped glass has large nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear fast response time. The distribution of refractive index of the nonlinear one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide satisfies sine function. We obtained the nonlinear photonic crystal waveguide by exposure holography and etching techniques. Length of the photonic crystal waveguide is about 3 mm. The height of the peak-groove of the waveguide is 0.1 μm. According to our design, the center of bandgap of the one-dimensional photonic crystal lies at 514.5 nm while the power density of the incident light, the incident light was reflected by the photonic crystal. When the power density of the incident light increasing, the bandgap is shifting to the direc-tion of short wavelength due to the decreasing of the refractive index with the increasing of the incident power density, so more incident light is transmitted. In experiment, we used an active mode-locking pulse of Ar ion laser as the light source which wavelength is 514.5 nm, repeating frequency is 82 MHz and pulse width is 200 ps. The light beam was coupled into the device by prism with a laser average power of 1.28 W (in the case of nonlinear saturation operation, optimum coupling efficiency is about 6%). Pulse wave forms of incident light and transmitted from sample were recorded in turn by 7 904 oscilloscope. The optical bistability curve of input power density and output one is fitted by computer. We obtained the threshold power density of bistable switch to be 1.60×10~5 W/cm~2 (it is equivalent to average power of 77 mW) and both the rise and fall time are 63 ps. We used the Finite Difference Time Domain Method to obtain the characteristics of the bandgap shift with the incident power density increasing of the nonlinear photonic crystal and calculate the optical bistability curve of this device. In theory, the threshold power density of bistable switch is about 1.40×10~5 W/cm~2 and the switch time is about 50 ps. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental ones. This device is a new and feasible one for optical information process and optical computing in the future.

Abstract:Optical bistability and hysteresis is observed experimentally with a nolinear two-dimensional (2D) periodic structure. The structure is a 2D volume index grating created in LiNbO3:Fe crystal through hologram recording and subsequent fixing techniques. No external feedback is provided. A strong intensity-dependent photovoltaic effect in LiNbO3:Fe material provides nonlinear coupling for the excited fields within the 2D periodic structure.
