Abstract:A pulsed corona discharge in conductive water is studied theoretically and experimentally via pre-discharge analysis, thermodynamic and dynamic processes of a plasma-containing bubble, an acoustic signature and energy partitioning. The total particle density and electron density inside the bubble, internal temperature and pressure, bubble radius and bubble wall Mach number are simulated by solving a set of equations including the ideal gas equation, Rayleigh equation and energy balance equation. The bubble radius is also measured by a high-speed charge-coupled device camera on a homemade experimental device. The acoustic waveforms and their power spectral density are calculated indirectly. By using several diagnostic tools, the electrical parameters of the load, light emission from the plasma and acoustic waveforms are recorded simultaneously. Simulation and experimental results of the bubble radius and acoustic signature agree reasonably well over the range of energy inputs from 5 to 30 J per pulse. Different kinds of terminations or intermediates of the energy transition process are analysed through simulation and experimental data. The electro-acoustic efficiency varies from 0.8% to 1.9%, while most of the discharge energy is consumed by circuit loss, Joule heating and thermal radiation, or is transformed into kinetic energy in the water.

Abstract:The physical process of dielectric barrier discharge photography (DBDP)is discussed.The mathematical model of DBDP is proposed.Then the contrast curve of DBDP is deduced.Based on this,the mechanism of DBDP is discussed and checked by the experiment of DBDP for a vernier caliper.The authors′ work is useful for improving and developing the Kirlian photography or the corona discharge photography.

Abstract:Although the image of discharge in the nanosecond time scale can provide some details of a single discharge, the essence of gas discharge remains random under the same macroscopic physical conditions. Therefore, the statistical evaluation of discharge images including a large number of stochastic processes in a long-time scale is still of great significance. In this paper, a digital image processing method presented in our previously paper is used to research the statistic indicators of AC corona discharge image in the time scale of seconds, and the axial distribution of the average gray level and the gray level standard deviation about corona discharge image are determined. Then, these statistical indicators are utilized to study the long brush-like corona, and a clear "stem" caused by the point electrode and not by the ball head electrode was found, even if they all belong to the highly non uniform electric field. Considering its corresponding current pulse rise time, we believe that the leader discharge also exists in the cm-level short gap. These results indicate that the statistical analysis on the longtime scales can be used in discharge research, and further image information mining will likely be used to provide some new characteristic parameters.

Abstract:Due to the progress in photoelectric detection techniques, visible light images provide more abundant spatial structure information, which facilitates the detection of the colorimetry distribution in discharge images. In this study, the 50Hz AC high voltage power source was applied to the 15 mm needle-plane gap under room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The discharge images in the time scale of seconds were obtained by a high resolution digital camera. Two kinds of colorimetry indicators based on RGB model and HSI model were used to reflect the spatial structure and the colorimetry variation of discharge areas. Our experimental results demonstrated the growth, suppression, and penetration of the filamentary discharge and reflected that the relative intensity of characteristic color varies with different voltages. According to the variation of colorimetry information, we divided the AC corona stages, and the stage division results of two models are well correlated. Oscilloscope electrical signals verify the reliability of the colorimetry result, and colorimetry information shows the advantage of overcoming the randomness of one single discharge pulse amplitude. The colorimetry information extracted from images can represent the statistical characteristics of a large number of discharges, helping to characterize the spatial structure of corona discharges and evaluate its status.

Abstract:Studying ionic wind is crucial for deepening our comprehension of electrical discharge processes and refining their application in industrial technologies. This research investigates the behavior of needle–needle electrode using high-speed schlieren imaging techniques, focusing on the dynamics of ionic wind and its influence on spark discharge channel formation. Observations indicate that the ionic wind generated during corona discharge provides a structured pathway that significantly guides the development of spark discharge channels, particularly evident in horizontal configurations. Our findings reveal that the velocity and density of the ionic wind increase with decreasing curvature radius of the needle tip, thereby enhancing its guiding effect. Furthermore, the spark discharge channel forms through the convergence of positive and negative streamers, which meet near the cathode, leading to substantial disturbances in the surrounding flow field post-discharge. This research highlights the intricate relationship between corona and spark discharges, demonstrating the critical role of ionic wind in influencing discharge channel morphology and offering insights for future applications in plasma and electrostatic-based technologies.

Abstract:In this paper, the characteristics of nanosecond spark discharge with a pin-pin electrode configuration have been systematically studied. Both streak camera with high temporal resolution and ICCD camera are employed together to investigate the breakdown and evolution process of the discharge. And the formation of initial breakdown and mode transition from streamer to spark in the electrode gap are clearly observed in the time scale of several nanoseconds with the temporal resolution of 100 ps. In addition, the time-resolved spectra technology is also used to analyze the generation and quenching mechanisms of reactive species, the electron density and electron temperature. The results show that there is a 1.25 ns initial discharge breakdown and that a bright cathode spot exist before the transformation from streamer to spark channel. After a faster cathode filament and a slower anode filament propagate and merge at the electrode gap, the spark discharge phase begins. The generation processes of different reactive species depend on discharge phase to a great extent. The N 2 * is first generated during the streamer phase while the O * , N * , and N + are mainly generated under the spark phase in which the electron temperature calculated by Boltzmann plots is 2.74 eV, and the electron density determined from the stark broadening of O lines is on the order of 10 16 cm -3 .

Abstract:Understanding the rapid dynamics of the primary streamer is crucial for comprehending the nanosecond pulsed discharge process. To reveal the fast primary streamer process, this study introduces a newly developed quadruple emICCD camera system capable of capturing a sequence of four discharge images in single pulse, coupled with self-customized software for data analysis. A nanosecond pulse power with its FWHM of 10.5 ns was applied to a coaxial reactor, focusing on the dynamics of the primary streamer. Our research clarifies the spatiotemporal variations of the primary streamer's properties and examines their relation with inner electrode diameter (i.d. 0.2–2.0 mm). Results showed that in a pulse-powered coaxial electrode, there are three stages in the primary streamer process and that i.d. serves as an important factor influencing the formation and propagation of streamers. Interestingly, we found that streamer head velocity, streamer width, and streamer area for individual streamers remain constant prior to streamer channels reaching the outer electrode. Furthermore, we also observed an initial increase followed by a decrease in both streamer head velocity and streamer width with increasing i.d values. This study sheds light on the fundamental properties of the primary streamer during nanosecond pulsed discharge, contributing valuable insights for future plasma applications.

Laser Guided Coronas and Its Applications

Abstract:A corona discharge is, by definition, a gas discharge where the geometry confines the gas ionizing processes to high-field ionization region around the active electrode(s). Corona discharges have found a number of commercial and industrial applications related to chemistry, diagnostic techniques, and electrostatic applications [1]. Corona discharge also plays an important role in the leader initiation process related to lightning. Although laser filament [2] shows successful demonstrations on guiding high voltage discharges and great potential capability to control atmospheric lightning, but it is a challenging project [3] due to insufficient understanding of the interaction between laser plasma channel and high voltage electric field. In this talk, we present our recent investigations on using femtoseoncd laser filament to deliver corona discharges. The high voltage corona discharge can be guided along laser plasma filament, and enhanced through the interaction with laser filaments [4]. The nonlinear enhancement of fluorescence from the interaction of laser filament and corona discharging electric field was attributed to the more efficient ionization along the laser filament by a spectroscopic analysis of fluorescence [5], which is the key process for filament guided corona discharge. The fluorescence lifetime of laser filament guided corona discharge was measured to be several microseconds, which is 3 orders of magnitude longer than the fluorescence lifetime of laser filaments [4]. The newly developed applications using laser filament guided streamer coronas to probe plasma density spatial distributions [6] and to remotely generate ionic wind [7] will be discussed and presented also. Experimental and Simulation Study on Luminous Characteristics of Trichel Discharge in Air at Picosecond Time Resolution

Abstract:The optical morphology of discharge is the main characteristic parameter describing the physical process of the discharge, and the luminescence behavior is inextricably linked to the motion behavior of charged particles. Since the Trichel discharge in air is a weak ionization event occurring on the sub-nanosecond time scale, micron space scale and accompanied by weak luminescence, the current experimental observation means have a low spatial and temporal resolution, which is insufficient to study the details of its luminescence properties clearly. To address this problem, the intensity of light generated by Trichel discharge in air is first measured and resolved in time and space using a constructed ultrafast optical counting and imaging system. At a very high temporal resolution of 55 ps, it is found that both its light emission and current pulse showed a trend of first rapid growth and then slow decline on the time scale of tens of nanoseconds. Later, in order to further investigate the connection between the microscopic behavior of charged particles and photons, a two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation model with three components (electrons, positive ions, and negative ions) is developed and the current simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The results show that the size of the ionization region and the interaction between particles in the discharge process are the main factors affecting the Trichel pulse and its photoemission. Electrons play a dominant role in photon generation during the rise time process, while it is the recombination process of positive and negative charges, which contributes the main photons during the fall time process. Finally, it is proposed that the expression of photon flux should be amended to include an additional term responsible for the photons generated due to recombination. The study helps to advance the understanding of the luminescence characteristics and the discharge mechanism of Trichel discharge.
Properties and characteristics of the nanosecond discharge developing at the water-air interface: tracking evolution from a diffused streamer to a spark filament

Abstract:The characteristics of nanosecond discharge propagating along the water-air interface in a unique DBD-like configuration with coplanar electrodes submerged in deionized/tap water are studied by combining ultrafast imaging and emission spectra with electrical characteristics. Time-resolved images provide a clear signature of diffusive plasma excited on the water surface at either side of the blade (insulated plastic separating the anode/cathode) called streamer phase and propagating perpendicularly away from it towards the anode /cathode with different velocities. Later on, the diffusive plasma converts into a few discrete and bright plasma filaments due to ionization instability (spark phase). There is no distinctive dependence in the streamer phase on water conductivity, but in the spark phase, more numerous, brighter, and thicker filaments form in tap water. The time-resolved emission spectra reveal the dominance of the first and second positive system of molecular bands in the streamer phase, followed by the appearance of atomic lines of hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen in the spark phase. The emission spectra are utilized to estimate plasma parameters (gas temperature ( ), electric field ( ), and electron density ( )) where a more dominant spark phase is formed in tap water with K, Td, and / .

Research the Length of the Positive Corona Using the Digital Image Processing Technology

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study of dc air discharge in a point-line electrode system. The digital image processing technology presented in our previously paper is used to calculate the length of the positive corona. The calculated results of the mean gray level, the standard deviation of the gray levels and the coefficient of variation which is the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean gray level, show that the jump location of the coefficient of variation is the end point of the corona and can be used as an index of the length of corona. With an increase of the voltage, the length of corona increases and the positive corona mingles with the negative corona at last. Compared with the other methods, the method is not only effective but also simple in the quantitative analysis the length of the corona.

Abstract:Images of diffuse discharges with a coaxial configuration in a 5-cm gap under different conditions are presented to illustrate the characteristics of large-area diffuse discharges. One ns-pulse generator with a rise time of 70 ns and a duration of 100 ns was used. Results show that the diffuse discharge is composed of plasma channels that start from bright spots on the inner electrode and expand in the direction to the outer electrode. The number of the bright spots increases with the decrease of gas pressure. Furthermore, comparing with the high repetition rate, the plasma channels are more likely to overlap with each other at low repetition rate.

Abstract:The study on corona discharge test under the power frequency voltage of the severe non-uniform electric field based on the UV-light imaging technology is conducted. The results illuminate that the corresponding relationship between the characterizing parameter of quantifying the intensity of corona discharge and the comparing parameter is accordant; the characterizing parameter can reflect the basic physical process of gas discharge; it can also distinguish each stage of gas discharge and the distribution of the characteristic variable of UV-light at each stage of corona discharge accords with the statistical regularity. Abstract:Higher time resolution imaging is vital for exploring the microscopic mechanisms of the discharge process. The transient processes of discharge phenomena occur in a short time, and the onset cannot be predicted in advance, thus not providing a trigger mechanism for conventional high-speed imaging methods. Here, the authors propose a high-time-resolution imaging method with 55-ps time resolution and single-photon detection sensitivity. First, the current signal generated by the discharge itself with a rising edge of only a few tens of nanoseconds combined with a high-speed sensing and signal-processing device is used to solve the high-speed triggering problem, and then the single-photon avalanche detector array operating in time-correlated single-photon counting mode combined with computational imaging techniques is used to obtain the evolution of the negative corona discharge at atmospheric pressure in air on the ps time scale, and finally, the time-dependent curves of the discharge photon number at different experimental voltages with different curvature radii are analysed. The method opens up new possibilities for imaging other high-speed dynamic processes without a fixed trigger signal.
Morphological characteristics of streamer region for long air gap positive discharge

Abstract:Abstract Knowledge of leader corona is the basis for long spark discharge modelling, which is critical to understand the underlying physics of lightning flashes and dielectric breakdown of long air gap widely utilized in power systems. This paper presents an accurate observation of the leader corona. The morphology of the leader corona region during the discharge was obtained using a high-speed camera and an image-enhanced charge-coupled device camera. Statistical results showed that the morphology of the streamer region varied at different discharge sub-phases. The first corona was a conical region with the average apex angle of 118.91°; the leader corona region behaved as a cone with an average vertex angle of 75.87° during the leader propagation process; the streamer area in the final jump was a combination of a cylinder and a cone with the average vertex angle of 82.61°. Noting that the obtained cone apex angle of the leader corona during the leader propagation phase was significantly smaller than that in photographical reports, and the observation results were related to the selected temporal resolution of the optical image apparatus. The discussion on the effect of the single-frame exposure time on observation results found that the average vertex angle of the conical streamer region gradually decreased with the decrease of the single-frame exposure time, and eventually tended to a stable value of about 75.96°. For comparison purposes, discharge experiments under two gap-distances demonstrated that on the premise of stable leader, the statistical distribution characteristics of the leader corona vertex angle were consistent, indicating the universal applicability to the simulation researches. Finally, it is found that the distortion of the electric field caused by the space charge explained the variation of the streamer area during the discharge process.

Abstract:In this paper, the basic principle of dielectric barrier discharge photography(DBDP) is discussed. An imaging equipment is set up for the purpose of studying the effect of exposure on the DBDP, by which this influences of exposure time and resistance in discharge circuit on the quality of DBDP are studied, respectively. Based on this results, the author advances that in the premise of using high-voltage nanosecond pulse discharge technology, controlling the exposure time and the resistance synthetically is a key for getting a good image of DBDP.

Abstract:A surface streamer is a ubiquitous discharge in electric equipment and surface dielectric barrier discharge. It is expected to suppress this kind of surface discharge in the insulation system, but on the other hand, the surface streamer is also utilized for the generation of active ions and the control of a gas kinetic distribution. As a product of the surface streamer, surface charge influences and characterizes the streamer's behavior. This study observed the two-dimensional transient evolution of the surface charge and the tangential electric field in a single individual surface streamer at the nanosecond level. Using a reflective Pockels effect system and a framing camera system, the surface streamer propagation under a sub-microsecond pulse voltage was measured in real time and in situ. The inception, propagation, and deceleration of a surface streamer are observed. The measurement exhibits an electrodecharge equipotential region that equivalently extends the electrode boundary. Under an anode field with a weak tangential component, the interior of the surface streamer channel exhibits local deviations from the quasi-neutrality, and a reversed tangential electric field is observed. The lateral movement of the positive charge may be responsible for this reverse electric field. The diagnostic technique presented in this study can describe the surface charge transient behavior in pulsed surface discharges, which complements the streamer model.
Formation of diffuse and spark discharges between two needle electrodes with the scattering of particles

Abstract:Abstract The development of a nanosecond discharge in a pin-to-pin gap filled with air at atmospheric pressure has been studied with high temporal and spatial resolutions from a breakdown start to the spark decay. Positive and negative nanosecond voltage pulses with an amplitude of tens kV were applied. Time-resolved images of the discharge development were taken with a four-channel ICCD camera. The minimum delay between the camera channels could be as short as 0.1 ns. This made it possible to study the gap breakdown process with subnanosecond resolution. It was observed that a wide-diameter streamer develops from the high-voltage pointed electrode. The ionization processes near the grounded pin electrode started when the streamer crossed half of the gap. After bridging the gap by the streamer, a diffuse discharge was formed. The development of spark leaders from bright spots on the surface of the pointed electrodes was observed at the next stage. It was found that the rate of development of the spark leader is an order of magnitude lower than that of the wide-diameter streamer. Long thin luminous tracks were observed against the background of a discharge plasma glow. It has been established that the tracks are adjacent to brightly glowing spots on the electrodes and are associated with the flight of small particles.

Abstract:To research discharge physics under AC voltage, a phase synchronization photography method is presented. By using a permanent-magnet synchronous motor to drive a photography mask synchronized with a discharge power supply, discharge images in a specific phase window can be recorded. Some examples of discharges photographed by this method, including the corona discharge in SF6 and the corona discharge along the air/epoxy surface, demonstrate the feasibility of this method. Therefore, this method provides an effective tool for discharge physics researchers.

Abstract:Single-pulse nanosecond surface dielectric barrier discharges operated in synthetic air and pure nitrogen at elevated pressure (6 bar) have been numerically studied by the classical fluid method. The aim of this work is to provide the necessary basis for analyzing the surface streamer-to-filament transition phenomenon. The electrical parameters, discharge morphology and propagation dynamics, as well as the possible influence of photoionization, kinetics and gas heating on the surface streamer stage at elevated pressure are discussed in a combined numerical-analytical way. A good agreement between measurement, numerical simulation and analytical estimation is achieved. The streamer thickness is derived to be inversely proportional to the pressure, the average reduced electric field in the streamer channel ranges from 75-150 Td, and the average electron density in the channel is similar to 10(22) m(-3) for both polarities. The characteristic time of electron decay in the positive streamer channel is only on the order of similar to 1 ns due to high charge exchange and electron-ion recombination rates. Photoionization provides an ionization source of 10(27)-10(28) m(-3) s(-1) in front of the streamer head for both gases. Stepwise ionization/dissociation significantly affects the discharge dynamics of negative polarity SDBD, while for positive polarity this influence is negligible. The fast gas heating could lead to +/- 0.15 cm change of the positive streamer length. The secondary surface ionization wave is numerically observed, providing a time duration 0.25-0.5 ns of high electric field (230 Td), making it possible for streamer-to-filament transition kinetics to take place.
