Abstract:Future electron linacs require high gradient acceleration. In this paper, the studies on the high shunt impedance backward traveling wave electron linac accelerating structure (BTW) are presented. At first, the characteristics of BTW are researched. The option of mode and optimal design methods of accelerating cavity for BTW are studied. A physical design method for BTW accelerators, including longitudinal and transversal particle dynamics, is given. Based on above studies, a 9MeV BTW accelerating tube at 3 pi/4 mode with frequency 2856MHz for inspecting large container as radiation source at customs is designed, and a comparison with disk-loaded waveguide accelerating tube is made. The result of research leads to the conclusion that backward traveling wave accelerating structure is preferable. Because BTW has higher effective shunt impedance, shorter filling time and more stable operation.

Abstract:Use of a traveling wave (TW) accelerating structure with a small phase advance per cell instead of standing wave may provide a significant increase of accelerating gradient in a superconducting linear accelerator. The TW section achieves an accelerating gradient 1.2-1.4 larger than TESLA-shaped standing wave cavities for the same surface electric and magnetic fields. Recent tests of an L-band single-cell cavity with a waveguide feedback demonstrated an accelerating gradient comparable to the gradient in a single-cell ILC-type cavity from the same manufacturer. This article presents the next stage of the 3- cell TW resonance ring development which will be tested in the traveling wave regime. The main simulation results of the microphonics and Lorentz Force Detuning (LFD) are also considered.

Abstract:Very high-energy electrons (VHEEs) are potential candidates for FLASH radiotherapy for deep-seated tumors. We proposed a compact VHEE facility based on an X-band high-gradient high-power technique. In this study, we investigated and realized the first X-band backward traveling-wave (BTW) accelerating structure as the buncher for a VHEE facility. A method for calculating the parameters of single cell from the field distribution was introduced to simplify the design of the BTW structure. Time-domain circuit equations were applied to calculate the transient beam parameters of the buncher in the unsteady state. A prototype of the BTW structure with a thermionic cathode-diode electron gun was designed, fabricated, and tested at high power at the Tsinghua X-band high-power test stand. The structure successfully operated with 5-MW microwave pulses from the pulse compressor and outputted electron bunches with an energy of 8 MeV and a pulsed current of 108 mA.

Abstract:S-band high-gradient accelerating structures were proposed to accelerate protons from 30 to 230 MeV for a compact proton therapy linac in Institute of Modern Physics. A backward traveling wave structure and a single-periodic magnetically coupled standing wave structure were designed, and differences between these two structures were analyzed to select a more suitable one for the proton therapy linac. In this paper, a novel single-periodic magnetically coupled standing-wave accelerating structure was studied, with an optimized nose cone that related to a smaller peak surface electric field and higher shunt impedance, with the reduced number of coupling holes and mechanical von Mises stress thus making it possible for higher duty factor and longer rf pulse operation, also with larger coupling holes and improved cell-to-cell coupling thus making this structure suitable for operating in π mode. An 11-cell high-power prototype for β=0.26 particles was developed with an active length of 143 mm. This prototype cavity is supposed to operate at an accelerating gradient of 30 MV/m with 0.1% duty factor, corresponding to a maximum surface electric field of 105 MV/m and a peak rf power of 3.43 MW. Design of a 10 MeV normal conducting CW proton linac based on equidistant multi-gap CH cavities

Abstract:The continue wave (CW) high current proton linac has wide applications as the front end of the high power proton machines. The low energy part is the most difficult one and there is no widely accepted solution yet. Based on the analysis of the focusing properties of the CW low energy proton linac, a 10 MeV low energy normal conducting proton linac based on equidistant seven-gap Cross-bar H-type (CH) cavities is proposed. The linac is composed of ten 7-gap CH cavities and the transverse focusing is maintained by the quadrupole doublets located between cavities. The total length of the linac is less than 6 meters and the average acceleration gradient is about 1.2 MeV/m. The electromagnetic properties of the cavities are investigated by Microwave Studio. At the nominal acceleration gradient the maximum surface electric field in the cavities is less than 1.3 times Kilpatrick limit, and the Ohmic loss of each cavity is less than 35 kW. The multi-particle beam dynamics simulations are performed with the help of the Tracewin code, the results show that the beam dynamics of the linac is quite stable, and the linac has the capability to accelerate up to 30 mA beam with acceptable dynamics behavior.

Design of Accelerating Structure on a Novel Compact Electron Linac

Abstract:This paper mainly discusses what type of accelerating structure should be chosen for a novel compact electron linac (NCEL for short). After simulation of dynamics process in this linac with Parmela program,we get to the point that it is better on the whole,to choose constant impedance accelerating structure than constant gradient accelerating structure on the NCEL of 10MeV class.In this NCEL,the spent beam of a high power klystron amplifier is used for injecting into an accelerator section and the klystron works in self excited mode of operation. In this paper,the simulations of dynamics process,when the spent beam of a high power 5MW klystron is injected into a constant gradient structure and a constant impedance structure,are carried out. By comparing the output beam performances of these two kinds of structures,one can draw the conclusion that from overall consideration,it will be better to equip the NCEL with constant impedance structure than constant gradient structure,especially when the spent beam of much higher power klystron is used. At the same time the result of simulation indicates that it is unnecessary to use focusing coils around accelerating section,and thus the design will be further simplified for the NCEL.

Abstract:A novel type dual-beam drift tube linac (DB-DTL) was proposed at the Institute of Modern Physics for ultra-high intensity heavy-ion acceleration. With two identical beam apertures located in the vertical direction with the same off-set from the cavity axis, two beams could be accelerated simultaneously by the DB-DTL and then be merged to one, thus double the current beam intensity limit, which is of great significance for ultra-high intensity heavy-ion acceleration. An 81.25 MHz proof-of-principle cavity was developed to demonstrate this new concept. Designed and optimized with the alternative phase focusing (APF) scheme, this prototype cavity was supposed to accelerate 10 mA protons beam from 0.56 MeV to 2.5 MeV in one meter with transmission efficiency more than 90%. Inter-digital H-mode (IH) structure was adopted by this DB-DTL, thus high shunt impedance could be achieved which significantly reduce the power loss. With efficient cooling, this cavity was capable to work at the pulsed mode with a maximum duty cycle of 10%. Beam dynamics simulations, electromagnetic design and optimization of the prototype cavity, and multi-physics analyses of this DB-DTL will be presented in this paper.

Abstract:X-band high-gradient linear accelerators are a challenging and attractive technology for compact electron linear-accelerator facilities. The Very Compact Inverse Compton Scattering Gamma-ray Source(VIGAS) program at Tsinghua University will utilize X-band high-gradient accelerating structures to boost the electron beam from 50 to 350 MeV over a short distance. A constant-impedance traveling-wave structure consisting of 72 cells working in the 2π/3 mode was designed and fabricated for this project.Precise tuning and detailed measurements were successfully applied to the structure. After 180 h of conditioning in the Tsinghua high-power test stand, the structure reached a target gradient of 80 MV/m. The breakdown rate versus gradient of this structure was measured and analyzed.

Abstract:To implement the Tsinghua Thomson Scattering X-ray Source upgrade plan and the Very Compact Inverse Compton Scattering Gamma-ray Source(VIGAS)pro-gram,a new 1.5-m traveling-wave accelerating structure was designed to replace the old 3-m SLAC-type structure with the aim of increasing the accelerating gradient from 15 to 30 MV/m.The new type of structure works in the 3π/4 mode with a comparatively low group velocity varying from 0.007c to 0.003c to increase the accelerating gradient at a given power.An elliptical iris was employed to reduce the surface field enhancement.The filling process of the low-group-velocity structure was analyzed using a circuit model.After fabrication,the structure was precisely tuned using the non-contact tuning method,followed by detailed low-power radiofrequency measurements.The structure was first installed and utilized at a beamline for the tera-hertz experiment at Tsinghua University.After 120 h of conditioning,it is now operating at a gradient of 24.2 MV/m and a 20.7-MW input power,with the klystron operating at its full power.It is expected to generate an accelerating gradient of 30 MV/m when the klystron power is upgraded to 30 MW in the near future.

Abstract:We present a topology for linear accelerators (linacs) that permits larger degrees of freedom for the optimization of individual cavity shapes. The power is distributed to the cavities through a waveguide with periodic apertures that guarantees the correct phases and amplitudes along the structure. This topology optimizes the power consumption and efficiency and allows the manipulation of the surface fields for high gradient operation. It also provides a possibility for low-temperature manufacturing techniques for use with novel materials. This greatly enhanced performance for both normal and superconducting linacs. We present a design and an experimental demonstration of this linac.

Abstract:Restricted by pulse dispersion, dephasing, and bunch deflection, it has been a challenging task to realize high-gain particle acceleration and bunch focusing by using an ultrashort-pulse laser to drive an integrable acceleration structure, which is necessary to develop an on-chip particle accelerator for practical applications. Here we propose a laser-driven traveling-wave linac (linear accelerator), which uses the cascade reflection and refraction of an ultrashort laser pulse on a microscale dielectric structure to achieve long-range laser-particle interaction, avoiding waveguide dispersion, and enhancing sustainable acceleration gradient. It is scalable and extensible, and can realize full-course particle acceleration by using a single laser source via the inverse Cherenkov effect. With this accelerator scheme, we further propose a dynamic synchronization and focusing method, which not only counteracts dephasing but also restrains the bunch spread and deflection caused by space-charge and emittance effects, realizing stable bunch transport and acceleration in a tiny-size bunch channel without resorting to the need for external focusing equipment. This accelerator scheme paves the way toward a high-efficiency laser-driven all-dielectric on-chip particle accelerator for practical applications.

Abstract:An S-band high-gradient accelerating structure is designed for a proton therapy linear accelerator (linac) to accommodate the new development of compact, single-room facilities and ultra-high dose rate (FLASH) radiotherapy. To optimize the design, an efficient optimization scheme is applied to improve the simulation efficiency. An S-band accelerating structure with 2856 MHz is designed with a low beta of 0.38, which is a difficult structure to achieve for a linac accelerating proton particles from 70 to 250 MeV, as a high gradient up to 50 MV/m is required. A special design involving a dual-feed coupler eliminates the dipole field effect. This paper presents all the details pertaining to the design, fabrication, and cold test results of the S-band high-gradient accelerating structure.

An X-band Disk-and-washer Accelerating Structure for Electron Accelerators

Abstract:X-band electron linacs are an excellent choice for portable accelerators. In this pager we present an X-band disk-and-washer standing wave structure is studied in this paper for a low energy accelerating tube. The DAW cavities are optimized to obtain the largest shunt impedance and quality for the TM020 mode. A set of differential equations is used to describe the optimizing process. The optimized results of a DAW structure working at 9300 MHz are given using SUPERFISH and MAFIA400. Four radial stem supports are adopted. The modes near to the working frequency are given with and without supports. The electromagnetic field building process was analyzed with T3 of MAFIA400. OFC model DAW cavities are built and the first test results are described.

Abstract:A Compact Linear Collider prototype traveling-wave accelerator structure fabricated at Tsinghua University was recently high-gradient tested at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK). This X-band structure showed good high-gradient performance of up to 100 MV/m and obtained a breakdown rate of 1.27 x 10(-8) per pulse per meter at a pulse length of 250 ns. This performance was similar to that of previous structures tested at KEK and the test facility at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), thereby validating the assembly and bonding of the fabricated structure. Phenomena related to vacuum breakdown were investigated and are discussed in the present study. Evaluation of the breakdown timing revealed a special type of breakdown occurring in the immediately succeeding pulse after a usual breakdown. These breakdowns tended to occur at the beginning of the rf pulse, whereas usual breakdowns were uniformly distributed in the rf pulse. The high-gradient test was conducted under the international collaboration research program among Tsinghua University, CERN, and KEK.

Abstract:RF breakdown are the main limitation for the application of high gradient structures. Higher frequencies and shorter pulse length benefit the design of accelerating structure for the breakdown threshold of surface field is Es = f τ. Power source which generates very short V-band pulse with nearly hundred megawatt is now available. The paper presents the analysis of a V-band dielectric acceleration structure and power source. Future plan about RF transmission and power coupling of the whole structure will be discussed. INTRODUCTION Large scale accelerator facilities are strongly essential for extremely conditions research, such as high energy and high brightness physics. Higher gradient accelerator will be economically feasible in the future since shortening the required accelerating length The study of high gradient accelerating over X-band is on the progress such as THz acceleration in dielectric material [1]. Theoretical and experimental results show that GV/m accelerating grading is possible in dielectric structure. In 2001, electron beam accelerating experiment has been processed in X-band at the Naval Research Lab [2]. With the 30 MW providing and up to 1us duration pulses, gradient is ~40MV/m in dielectric tube. The schematic of dielectric structure is shown in Fig. 1. With the appearance of microwave source in high power and short pulse length nearly 60GHz, high gradient electron acceleration in dielectric structure is possible. New V-band traveling tube of dielectric tube working in TM01 mode is analysed to purse higher gradient value in norm temperature. The following section we will present electromagnetic analysis procedure of field components in structure and introduce the microwave source. Full structure simulation and mechanical design will be present in the future. Abstract:Based on the design requirements proposed by the Beijing On-Line Isotope Separation project (BISOL), four Sn 22+ -based, 81.25 MHz continuous wave (CW) drift tube linac (DTL) cavities have been designed. These DTLs are capable of accelerating Sn 22+ of 0.1 pmA from 0.5 MeV/u to 1.8 MeV/u over a length of 7 m, with an output longitudinal normalized RMS emittance of 0.35π·mm·mrad, and transmission efficiency higher than 95%. The dynamics design adopted the KONUS (Kombinierte Null Grad Struktur Combined 0° Structure) scheme. Comprehensive error study implies that these DTLs can accommodate a wide range of non-ideal beams and cavity alignment errors while maintaining high transmission efficiency. The electromagnetic design employed a Cross-bar H-mode (CH) structure for superior water-cooling characteristics, and a detailed tuning analysis was conducted to derive an optimal tuning scheme. The results of the multiple-physics analysis indicate that the frequency shift of each cavity is within an acceptable range. Comparing the dynamics requirements with the RF design results, similar particle output phase distribution, equivalent energy gain and consistent emittance growth are observed. Detailed designs will be presented in this manuscript.

Development of an x-band hybrid dielectric-iris-loaded accelerator *

Abstract:A compact x-band hybrid dielectric-iris-loaded travelling-wave linac with constant impendence structure has been designed. By adjusting the values of φ β and the numbers of cells, the beam energy of 33 MeV, the capture efficiency about 50% and the energy spread about 3% ± with the beam current being 70 mA and the electron gun voltage being 50KeV are obtained through longitudinal dynamics calculation. The length of accelerator tube is 1.48m. The maximum accelerating gradient is less than 45MV/m. By using electromagnetic code such as MAFIA, the attenuation per unit length of structureα , the shunt impedance s Z , the quality factor Q, the group velocity g β and the phase velocity φ β are got by optimizing the dimensions of the cavities. INTRODUCTION X-band high-gradient accelerator has been progressed greatly in recent years, motivated by the need for the future linear colliders in high energy physics research and for the industrial and medical application. By developing X-band high gradient accelerating structure, one can use a shorter length for a given power to achieve certain electron beam energy. There are obvious advantages for using X-band range than S-band one. First, the shunt impedance per unit length of X-band is higher than that of S-band. Second, the maximum permissible electric field strength is also higher. One disadvantage of conventional iris-loaded accelerating structures is the high ratio of the peak surface electric field to the peak axial electric field. Typically this ratio of Es/Ea is more than 2. The high surface electric field relative to the accelerating gradient may prove to be a limitation for realizing technologies for very high gradient accelerators. A hybrid dielectric and iris loaded periodic structure can reduce Es/Ea to near unity, while maintaining high acceleration efficiency as measured by r/Q compare favourably with conventional metallic structures[1] and the r/Q values of dipole modes for the new accelerating structure are much lower than those for the iris-load accelerating structure[2]. The device is shown in figure 1. This paper presents a design of an x-band (11.424GHz) hybrid dielectric and iris loaded travelling wave electron linear accelerator with beam energy of 33 MeV and beam current of 70 mA. Dielectric Loaded Waveguide Terahertz LINACs

Abstract:Dielectric loaded waveguides (DLWs) driven by multicycle terahertz (THz) pulses hold great promise as compact linear accelerators (LINACs) due to their ability to sustain higher breakdown fields at THz frequencies compared to conventional RF components. Precise control of the THz pulse's phase and group velocities within the DLW can be achieved by adjusting the dimensions of the dielectric tube. Optimization of the DLW parameters has to take various factors into account like initial electron energy, THz pulse energy available, THz pulse width, DLW dimensions, etc. To maximize the final kinetic energy of the accelerated electrons, this study presents a comprehensive analytical/numerical guideline for cylindrical DLW LINACs. Additionally, graphic representations are introduced to visualize optimal designs for varying initial electron and THz pulse energies. The provided guideline figures enable designers to tailor the accelerator to specific requirements, paving the way for potential advancements in THz-driven particle acceleration and offering cost-effective alternatives to conventional RF accelerators for various scientific, industrial, and medical applications.

Abstract:There is a strong demand for accelerating structures able to achieve higher gradients and more compact dimensions for the next generation of linear accelerators for research, industrial and medical applications. In the framework of the Compact Light XLS project, an ultra high gradient higher harmonic RF accelerating structure is needed for the linearization of the longitudinal space phase. In order to determine the maximum sustainable gradients in normal conducting RF powered particle beam accelerators with extremely low probability of RF breakdown, investigations are in progress for using shorts accelerating structures in the Ka-band regime. We here report an electromagnetic design of a compact linearizer standing wave (SW) accelerating structure 8 cm long operating on $\pi$ mode, third harmonic with respect to the Linac frequency (11.994 GHz) with a 100 MV/m accelerating gradient and minimum surface electric field. Numerical electromagnetic studies have been performed by using the well known SuperFish, HFSS and CST computing software.
