Abstract:Interface reactions and wettability between melt superalloys and ceramic mould materials were investigated by using a sessile drop experiment. The wetting angle of the melt alloy on the ceramic material was calculated and the microstructure of the alloy interface was investigated by metalloscope as well as SEM. It was found that active element C in the alloy is an important factor that influences the interface reactions and the wettability. Alloys with C content lower than 0.07wt.% were almost stable on the ceramic material and no interface reaction products were found. However, alloys with C content higher than 0.16wt.% reacted with the ceramic materials. Purple reaction products were found on the alloy surface and sand adhesions were observed at the alloy-ceramic interface. In the non-reactive system, the wetting angle is in the range of 135o-150o. In the reactive system, the wetting angle is lower than 120o.

Abstract:In this study, wettability behavior and the interaction between the K492M alloy and an Al2O3 shell were investigated at 1430 °C for 2~5 min. The microstructural characterization of the alloy-shell interface was carried out by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that the interaction could cause a sand adhesion phenomenon affecting the alloy, and the attached products were Al2O3 particles. In addition, the wetting angles of the alloys located on the shell were 125.2°, 109.4°, 97.0°, and 95.0°, respectively, as the contact time was increased from 2 to 5 min. Apparently, the wettability of the alloy in relation to the shell had a relationship with the contact time, where a longer contact time was beneficial to the permeation of the alloy into the shell and the interaction between the two components. No significant chemical products could be detected in the interaction layer, indicating that only the occurrence of the physical dissolution of the shell took place in the alloy melt.

Abstract:The interfacial reaction of Al2O3 and Ag-Cu-Ti alloy was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. It was shown that Al2O3 ceramic reacted strongly with Ag-Cu-Ti alloy. With the increasing heating temperature and holding time, the reaction layer thickness increased and its growth was mainly controlled by the diffusion of titanium through the reaction layer. The reaction products were Cu2Ti4O and AlTi at or below 1123 K. However, there were two distinct layers at the interface at or above 1173 K, one layer in the vicinity of ceramic consisting mainly of Ti2O and TiO and the other layer near the alloy was CuTi2, a layer transition structures with a Al2O3/Ti2O+TiO/Ti2O +TiO+CuTi2/CuTi2/Ag-Cu formed at the interface according to the SEM and XRD analyses results. A lower or a higher joining temperature and a shorter or a longer holding time were disadvantageous for a stable and high reliable joined interface from the point of view of interfacial microstructures and morphologies.

Abstract:Joints of high-purity Al 2 O 3 were made with a Ag 57 Cu 38 Ti 5 alloy by vacuum brazing at 800 °C and 900 °C for 30 min. The microstructures at the interface between the ceramic and the alloy were examined in cross-section by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and on different planes parallel to the interface layer-by-layer by optical microscope (OM), respectively. The chemical composition of the reaction product was also analysed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). A thin reaction layer about 1.0 μm thick was formed on the Al 2 O 3 surface at a temperature of 800 °C. This layer had three kinds of morphologies and they were identified as Ag, Cu 2 Ti 4 O and AlTi, respectively. According to SEM and OM results, there were two distinct layers 4.0 μm thick interfacial reaction layer for sample heated at 900 °C, one layer in the vicinity of the ceramic consisting mainly of Ti 2 O and TiO and the other layer near the alloy was CuTi 2 . A transition layer structure composed of Al 2 O 3 /Ti 2 O + TiO/Ti 2 O + TiO + CuTi 2 /CuTi 2 /Ag–Cu was formed at the interface. The Al concentration at the interface was relatively high and confirmed that the reduction of Al 2 O 3 by Ti occurred, which was consistent with the result of a thermodynamic analysis.

Abstract:Abstract Wetting behavior and interfacial reactions between a Ni-based superalloy and silica-based ceramic cores containing 10 wt.%, 30 wt.% and 50 wt.% ZrSiO4 were studied using a sessile drop method. The reaction products were characterized by SEM/EDS, EPMA and XPS analysis. SiO2 was the main component in the ceramic cores taking part in the interfacial reactions and the reaction products were composed mainly of Al2O3 layer with some ZrOx scattered. A Cr2O3 halo formed outside the wetted ceramic surface. The wetting angle increased in the initial stage to a peak value and then decreased to a constant value. The increase of the wetting angle may be attributed to the gas evaporation at the interface and the decrease of the wetting angle was due to the formation of the reaction layer at the interface.

Abstract:The interfacial microstructures of alumina (Al2O3) and aluminosilicate (Al2O3·SiO2) short-fiber-reinforced aluminum-alloy composites were studied by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The experimental results showed that the SiO2 content in the fiber has a marked effect on the interface microstructures of the composites even though a silica binder is not used. The reaction product MgAl2O4 spinel oxide was formed at the interface of the aluminosilicate-fiber-reinforce aluminum-alloy composite, however, no spinel oxide was observed at the interface of alumina-fiber-reinforced composite. The alumina fiber could act as a heterogeneous nucleation substrate for the primary silicon phase as a result of the low disregistry (5.62%) between the (0001) of δ-Al2O3 and the (110) of silicon.

Abstract:The wettability between liquid Ti6Al4V alloy and calcia-stabilized zirconia was studied by the self-designed measuring apparatus in argon atmosphere. By means of the testing device, a kinetic and interfacial study on the wettability and spreading behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy melt on calcia-stabilized zirconia is presented. The micrographic observation made on cross sections perpendicular to the interface using map analyses shows that the interfacial reaction occurred at high temperature. However, the contact angles are relative stable and larger than 90° within experimental duration, and the equilibrium contact angle is 110°. The influence of interfacial reaction on the wettability can be explained by the total free energy at the liquid/solid interface.

Abstract:Interaction behaviors between Al-Si, Zn-Al alloys and Al2O3p/6061Al composite at different heating temperatures were investigated. It is found that Al2O3p/6061Al composite can be wetted well by AlSi-1, AlSi-4 and Zn-Al alloys and an interaction layer forms between the alloy and composite during interaction. Little Al-Si alloys remain on the surface when they fully wet the composite and Si element in Al-Si alloy diffuses into composite entirely and assembles in the composite near the interface of Al-Si alloy/composite to form a Si-rich zone. The microstructure in interaction layer with Si penetration is still dense. Much more residual Zn-Al alloy exists on the surface of composite when it wets the composite, and porosities appear at the interface of Zn-Al alloy/composite. The penetration of elements Zn. Cu of Zn-Al alloy into composite leads to the generation of shrinkage cavities in the interaction layer and makes the microstructure of Al2O3p/6061Al composite loose.

Abstract:First‐principles studies of metal/α‐Al2O3 interfaces have revealed strong interfacial stoichiometry effects on adhesion. The metals included Al, Ni, Cu, Au, Ag, Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt, Nb, and β‐NiAl. Metallic and ionic‐covalent adhesive bonding effects were found in varying amounts depending on whether the interfacial stoichiometry is stoichiometric, oxygen‐rich, or aluminum‐rich in a qualitative way. A semiempirical but physically sensible understanding ensues for the effects of interfacial stoichiometry and reveals the underlying strong correlation of the interfacial adhesion with the physical properties of the bulk materials that join and form the interface. The metallic component of the bonding was found to be related to the ratio of (B/V)1/2, where B and V are the bulk modulus and molar volume of the metal, respectively. In like manner, the ionic‐covalent component of the bonding could be related to the enthalpy of oxide formation of the bulk metal. A unified model is proposed to describe the adhesion of metal/alumina interfaces with interfacial stoichiometry effects, and the model is also expected to be valid for other metal–oxide interfaces.

Abstract:With the aid of SEM and DTA, the microstructures of metal side of the interface between Ti48Al2Cr2Nb alloy and Y2O3, ZrO2 (Y2O3 stabilized), ZrO2 (MgO stabilized), and Zircon sand were investigated, respectively. The initial reaction temperatures were measured for Ti48Al2Cr2Nb alloy and Y2O3, ZrO2 (Y2O3 stabilized), ZrO2 (MgO stabilized) and Zircon sand, respectively. The results show that the microstructure is the coarsest with rosettes-like shape after Ti48Al2Cr2Nb alloy reacts with Zircon sand, and even the smallest with granular-like shape after Ti48Al2Cr2Nb alloy reacts with Y2O3. The order of the initial reaction temperatures between Ti48Al2Cr2Nb alloy and four oxide ceramic materials is non-reaction at 1500, 1400, 1380, and 820 °C, respectively.
Microstructure Characteristics of Interaction Layer of Zn-Al Eutectic Alloy with Al2o3p/6061al Composites

Abstract:The interaction between Zn-Al eutectic alloy and Al2O3p/6061Al composites in the vacuum furnace was investigated. Great attention has been paid to the elements diffusion, the microstructure and formation of the interface between Zn-Al eutectic alloy and Al2O3p/6061Al composites. Experimental results show that Zn-Al eutectic alloy has a good wetting ability to Al2O3p/6061 Al composites and the wetting angle decreases with increasing the temperature in vacuum. After the interaction, an interaction layer forms between Zn-Al alloy and Al2O3p/6061 Al composites. The phases in the interaction layer mainly consist of alpha-Al(Zn), Al2O3 and CuZn5 resulted from the diffusion of elements from the Zn-Al alloy. Several porosities distribute in the region near the interface of the Zn-Al alloy/interaction layer. The amount of shrinkage voids in the interacting layer is relevant to the penetration of Zn element into Al2O3p/6061Al composites which is a function of temperature. So it is necessary to lower heating temperature in order to limit the Zn penetration.

Abstract:Metallization of ceramics is drawing more and more attention in industries. The mechanisms involving high bonding strength between cold sprayed metallic coatings and ceramic substrates are not yet clear. In this study, aluminum (Al) particles and alumina (Al2O3) substrates were employed to reveal impact phenomena in cold spraying. Electron backscatter diffraction equipment (EBSD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) were used to investigate the interfacial microstructures of the Al particles and Al2O3 substrates. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) were employed to quantitatively characterize the temperatures and plastic strains at the interfaces. The bonding strength of the Al coatings and Al2O3 substrates was measured and the analysis to the fracture morphologies was also conducted. The results show that the Al particles at the interfaces presented fine-grain and amorphous structures, and the Al2O3 substrates experienced a brittle rupture. The Al coatings bonded on the ceramic surfaces due to mechanical interlocking and heteroepitaxy. The results offer more details to understand the bonding mechanisms of metallic particles and ceramic substrates.

Abstract:To solve the problem of adhesion of aluminum fluid to the inner wall of the vacuum ladle in the aluminum electrolysis industry, molecular dynamics simulation is performed to research the wetting behavior of Al droplets on the surfaces of theα-Al2O3substrates C (0001), M (11-00), and R (11-02) at 1073 K. Meanwhile, the adhesion characteristics of the Al droplet are evaluated by the potential of the mean force (PMF) for the separation of the Al droplets from different surfaces of theα-Al2O3substrate. The results show that the wetting behavior of Al droplets on theα-Al2O3substrate is influenced by the different crystallographic orientations. The diffusion of Al droplets in thex-o-yplane of the substrate exhibits isotropic. The PMF and the interfacial potential energy reveal that the magnitude of the adhesion work in the solid-liquid separation of Al droplets fromα-Al2O3substrates follows the order C (0001) > R (11-02) > M (11-00). These findings characterize the wetting properties and adhesion behavior of Al droplets on an atomic scale and provide a theoretical basis for the selection of materials for the inner wall of the vacuum ladle.

Abstract:Wetting and heat transfer during solidification were studied with Al–Si alloy (A413) melt droplets on copper and stainless steel cylindrical substrates. As the molten metal cools down and solidifies, the interface changes from the initial liquid/solid contact to solid/solid contact, leading to variations in the rate of interfacial heat transfer. The effect of substrate roughness and melt superheat on the droplet contact angle and heat flux was investigated. A smooth substrate surface resulted in higher casting surface roughness, and the contact angle of solidified droplets increased with an increase in substrate roughness. Surface profile analysis indicated the presence of an air gap between the substrate and solidified droplet. The gap width was used to determine the variation of heat transfer coefficient (HTC) along the radial direction of the substrate surface at the end of solidification. Deformation of the solidified droplet was inverse for copper versus stainless steel resulting in an increase in HTC for copper and a decrease for stainless steel.

Abstract:The surfaces of ellipsoidal Al2O3 particles with average size of 0.15 μm and the interfaces between the Al2O3 particles and 1070Al were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM).The results show that the surfaces of Al2O3 particles appear to be polyhedrons consisting of crystal planes with small angle, while every plane of the polyhedrons could be considered as a stepped structure composed of close-packed planes along the close-packed direction. The interfaces of the 0.15 μm Al2O3p/1070Al composite bond well, without any interfacial reaction products. It is proposed that there are several kinds of crystallographic orientation relationships between the aluminum matrix and Al2O3particles due to the polyhedral structure. In our study, such orientation relationships are found to be {110} Al ||{1100} Al2O3 and ⟨110⟩ Al ||⟨1126⟩ Al2O3 .

Abstract:The effect of coating materials on the metal-coating interface, alloy chemical composition and microstructure was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Microhardness variation from the surface to the inside of the samples was compared. The results indicate that inordinate interaction occurs at the interface between the coating and the melt. The crucible layer is found to suffer chemical dissolution and some physical erosion by the molten alloy and the extent of that dissolution depend partly on the coating material. Additionally, the thermodynamics of the TiAl/Oxide reactions have been studied, and the main mechanism responsible for the contamination of the directional solidification samples is diffusion controlled dissolution of the coatings in the melt which increases the oxygen content in the matrix

Abstract:The Cu-Al composite material possesses a large potential value in practical application due to its excellent properties. Whereas the Cu/Al interface is an inevitable issue to be solved both experimentally and theoretically. Thus, the effects of temperature, pressure on atomic interdiffusion along the direction perpendicular to the Cu(1 1 0)/Al solid-liquid interface have been investigated by using a molecular dynamics (MD) method with the embedded atomic method (EAM) potentials. The results indicate that the diffusion coefficients of both Cu and Al atoms layers, as well as the diffusion depth of Al atoms, satisfy Arrhenius formula with the system temperature. The diffusion depth of Cu atoms presents a linear relationship with system temperatures. While the thickness of diffusion layer presents a parabolic relation with diffusion time, which is also in good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, we show that the diffusion rate of Cu atoms diffusion in Al liquid is more than 5 times that of Al atoms diffusion in Cu layers, and sequentially the alloy layers are mainly formed by the diffusion of Cu atoms in the Al liquid. Finally, the intermetallic in alloy layers is mainly identified as θ-Al2Cu once solidification by annealing. These findings have useful in designing Cu/Al interface in practices.
