Abstract:This paper presents a global study of the class $\bf{Q}{\widehat{ES}}$ of all real quadratic polynomial differential systems possessing exactly one elemental infinite singular point and one triple infinite singular point, which is either an infinite nilpotent elliptic-saddle or a nilpotent saddle. This class can be divided into three different families, namely, $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}$ of phase portraits possessing three real finite singular points, $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}$ of phase portraits possessing one real and two complex finite singular points, and $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}$ of phase portraits possessing one real triple finite singular point. Here we provide the complete study of the geometry of these three families. Modulo the action of the affine group and time homotheties, families $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}$ and $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}$ are three-dimensional and family $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}$ is two-dimensional. We study the respective bifurcation diagrams of their closures with respect to specific normal forms, in subsets of real Euclidean spaces. The bifurcation diagram of family $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}$ (respectively, $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}$ and $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}$) yields 1274 (respectively, 89 and 14) subsets with 91 (respectively, 27 and 12) topologically distinct phase portraits for systems in the closure $\overline{\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}}$ (respectively, $\overline{\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}}$ and $\overline{\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}}$) within the representatives of $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}$ (respectively, $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}$ and $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}$) given by a specific normal form.

Abstract:In this paper we provide a new method to study global dynamics of planar quasi--homogeneous differential systems. We first prove that all planar quasi--homogeneous polynomial differential systems can be translated into homogeneous differential systems and show that all quintic quasi--homogeneous but non--homogeneous systems can be reduced to four homogeneous ones. Then we present some properties of homogeneous systems, which can be used to discuss the dynamics of quasi--homogeneous systems. Finally we characterize the global topological phase portraits of quintic quasi--homogeneous but non--homogeneous differential systems.

Towards a complete classification of non-chiral topological phases in 2D fermion systems

Abstract:In recent years, fermionic topological phases of quantum matter has attracted a lot of attention. In a pioneer work by Gu, Wang and Wen, the concept of equivalence classes of fermionic local unitary(FLU) transformations was proposed to systematically understand non-chiral topological phases in 2D fermion systems and an incomplete classification was obtained. On the other hand, the physical picture of fermion condensation and its corresponding super pivotal categories give rise to a generic mathematical framework to describe fermionic topological phases of quantum matter. In particular, it has been pointed out that in certain fermionic topological phases, there exists the so-called q-type anyon excitations, which have no analogues in bosonic theories. In this paper, we generalize the Gu, Wang and Wen construction to include those fermionic topological phases with q-type anyon excitations. We argue that all non-chiral fermionic topological phases in 2+1D are characterized by a set of tensors $(N^{ij}_{k},F^{ij}_{k},F^{ijm,\alpha\beta}_{kln,\chi\delta},n_{i},d_{i})$, which satisfy a set of nonlinear algebraic equations parameterized by phase factors $\Xi^{ijm,\alpha\beta}_{kl}$, $\Xi^{ij}_{kln,\chi\delta}$, $\Omega^{kim,\alpha\beta}_{jl}$ and $\Omega^{ki}_{jln,\chi\delta}$. Moreover, consistency conditions among algebraic equations give rise to additional constraints on these phase factors which allow us to construct a topological invariant partition for an arbitrary triangulation of 3D spin manifold. Finally, several examples with q-type anyon excitations are discussed, including the Fermionic topological phase from Tambara-Yamagami category for $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$, which can be regarded as the $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$ parafermion generalization of Ising fermionic topological phase.

Abstract:In two-dimensional topological phases, quasiparticle excitations can carry fractional symmetry quantum numbers. We generalize this notion of symmetry fractionalization to three-dimensional topological phases, in particular to loop excitations, and propose a partial classification for symmetry-enriched $\mathbb{Z}_2$ toric code phase. We apply the results to the classification of fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases in three dimensions.

Abstract:We study phase portraits of a first order implicit differential equation in a neighborhood of its pleated singular point that is a non-degenerate singular point of the lifted field. Although there is no a visible local classification of implicit differential equations at pleated singular points (even in the topological category), we show that there exist only six essentially different phase portraits, which are presented.

Abstract:In the paper we deal with a quintic Lienard system of the form (x) over dot=y-(a(1)x+a(2)x(3)+a(3)x(5)),(y) over dot=b(1)x+b(2)x(3) Z(2)-symmetry, where a(1),a(2),b(1)is an element of R a(3)b(2) not equal 0. A complete study of this system with b(2) > 0, called the saddle case, is finished, showing that the system exhibits at most two limit cycles, and the necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained on the existence of two limit cycles and a two-saddle heteroclinic loop. We also present a global bifurcation diagram and the corresponding phase portraits of this system, including Hopf bifurcation, Bautin bifurcation, two-saddle heteroclinic loop bifurcation and double limit cycle bifurcation.

Abstract:This paper deals with the global dynamics of planar piecewise smooth differential systems constituted by two different vector fields separated by one straight line that passes through the origin. From a quasi-canonical family of piecewise quadratic differential systems with a pseudo-focus point at the origin, which has six parameters, we investigate the subfamilies where the origin is indeed a pseudo-center. For such subfamilies, we classify its global phase portraits in the Poincaré disk and the associated bifurcation sets.

Exact Universal Characterization of Chiral-Symmetric Higher-Order Topological Phases

Abstract:Utilizing a series of Bott indices formulated through polynomials of position operators, we establish a comprehensive framework for characterizing topological zero-energy corner states in systems with chiral symmetry. Our framework covers systems with arbitrary shape, including topological phases that are not characterizable by previously proposed invariants such as multipole moments or multipole chiral numbers. A key feature of our framework is its ability to capture the real-space pattern of zero-energy corner states. We provide a rigorous analytical proof of its higher-order correspondence. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our theory, we examine several model systems with representative patterns of zero-energy corner states that previous frameworks fail to classify.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize and study dynamical properties of cubic vector fields on the sphere . We start by classifying all degree three polynomial vector fields on and determine which of them form Kolmogorov systems. Then, we show that there exist completely integrable cubic vector fields on and also study the maximum number of various types of invariant great circles for homogeneous cubic vector fields on . We find a tight bound in each case. Further, we also discuss phase portraits of certain cubic Kolmogorov vector fields on .

Abstract:The free-fermion topological phases with Z<sub>2</sub> invariants cover a broad range of topological states, including the time-reversal invariant topological insulators, and are defined on the equilibrium ground states. Whether such equilibrium topological phases have universal correspondence to far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics is a fundamental issue of both theoretical and experimental importance. Here we uncover the universal topological quench dynamics linking to these equilibrium topological phases of different dimensionality and symmetry classes in the tenfold way, with a general framework being established. We show a novel result that a generic d-dimensional topological phase represented by Dirac type Hamiltonian and with Z<sub>2</sub> invariant defined on high symmetry momenta can be characterized by topology reduced to certain arbitrary discrete momenta of Brillouin zone called the highest-order band-inversion surfaces. Such dimension-reduced topology has unique correspondence to the topological pattern emerging in far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics by quenching the system from trivial phase to the topological regime, rendering the dynamical hallmark of the equilibrium topological phase. This work completes the dynamical characterization for the full tenfold classes of topological phases, which can be partially extended to even broader topological phases protected by lattice symmetries and in non-Dirac type systems, and shall advance widely the research in theory and experiment.

Geometrical Meaning of Winding Number and Its Characterization of Topological Phases in One-Dimensional Chiral Non-Hermitian Systems

Abstract:We unveil the geometrical meaning of winding number and utilize it to characterize the topological phases in one-dimensional chiral non-Hermitian systems. While chiral symmetry ensures the winding number of Hermitian systems are integers, it can take half integers for non-Hermitian systems. We give a geometrical interpretation of the half integers by demonstrating that the winding number v of a non-Hermitian system is equal to half of the summation of two winding numbers v(1) and v(2) associated with two exceptional points, respectively. The winding numbers v(1) and v(2) represent the times of the real part of the Hamiltonian in momentum space encircling the exceptional points and can only take integers. We further find that the difference of v(1) and v(2) is related to the second winding number or energy vorticity. By applying our scheme to a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and an extended version of it, we show that the topologically different phases can be well characterized by winding numbers. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the existence of left and right zero-mode edge states is closely related to the winding number v(1) and v(2).

Abstract:Symmetry is fundamental to topological phases. In the presence of a gauge field, spatial symmetries will be projectively represented, which may alter their algebraic structure and generate novel physics. We show that the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ projectively represented translational symmetry operators adopt a distinct anticommutation relation. As a result, each energy band is twofold degenerate, and carries a varying spinor structure for translation operators in momentum space, which cannot be flattened globally. Moreover, combined with other internal or external symmetries, they give rise to exotic band topologies. Particularly, with the inherent time-reversal symmetry, a single fourfold Dirac point must be enforced at the Brillouin zone corner. By breaking one primitive translation, the Dirac semimetal is shifted into a special topological insulator phase, where the edge bands have a M\"obius twist. Our work opens an arena of research for exploring topological phases protected by projectively represented space groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a full description of the critical graph of the quadratic differential $\varpi_{a,\theta}$ defined on the Riemann sphere $\widehat{% %TCIMACRO{\U{2102} }% %BeginExpansion \mathbb{C} %EndExpansion }$ by $\varpi_{a,\theta}=-e^{2i\theta}\left( z-a\right) \left( z^{2}-1\right) dz^{2},$ where $\theta\in% %TCIMACRO{\U{211d} }% %BeginExpansion \mathbb{R} %EndExpansion ,$ and $a\in% %TCIMACRO{\U{2102} }% %BeginExpansion \mathbb{C} %EndExpansion .$. We prove that the existence and the number of short trajectories of $\varpi_{a,\theta}$ depend on the location of $a$ in certain curves defined on the complex plane as the level sets of some harmonic functions. More focus will be to the cases $\theta\in\left\{ 0,\pi/4\right\} .$ We investigate these classifications to study an inverse spectral problem related to the complex cubic oscillator for Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:Topological qauntum field theory(TQFT) is a very powerful theoretical tool to study topological phases and phase transitions. In $2+1$D, it is well known that the Chern-Simons theory captures all the universal topological data of topological phases, e.g., quasi-particle braiding statistics, chiral central charge and even provides us a deep insight for the nature of topological phase transitions. Recently, topological phases of quantum matter are also intensively studied in $3+1$D and it has been shown that loop like excitation obeys the so-called three-loop-braiding statistics. In this paper, we will try to establish a TQFT framework to understand the quantum statistics of particle and loop like excitation in $3+1$D. We will focus on Abelian topological phases for simplicity, however, the general framework developed here is not limited to Abelian topological phases.

Abstract:Topological phase of matter is now a mainstream of research in condensed matter physics, of which the classification, synthesis, and detection of topological states have brought excitements over the recent decade while remain incomplete with ongoing challenges in both theory and experiment. Here we propose to establish a universal non-equilibrium characterization of the equilibrium topological quantum phases classified by integers, and further propose the high-precision dynamical schemes to detect such states. The framework of the dynamical classification theory consists of basic theorems. First, we uncover that classifying a d-dimensional (dD) gapped topological phase of generic multibands can reduce to a (d-1)D invariant defined on so-called band inversion surfaces (BISs), rendering a bulk-surface duality which simplifies the topological characterization. Further, we show in quenching across phase boundary the (pseudo) spin dynamics to exhibit unique topological patterns on BISs, which are attributed to the post-quench bulk topology and manifest a dynamical bulk-surface correspondence. For this the topological phase is classified by a dynamical topological invariant measured from an emergent dynamical spin-texture field on the BISs. Applications to quenching experiments on feasible models are proposed and studied, demonstrating the new experimental strategies to detect topological phases with high feasibility. This work opens a broad new direction to classify and detect topological phases by non-equilibrium quantum dynamics.
Weyl-type Topological Phase Transitions in Fractional Quantum Hall Like Systems

Abstract:We develop a method to characterize topological phase transitions for strongly correlated Hamiltonians defined on two-dimensional lattices based on the many-body Berry curvature. Our goal is to identify a class of quantum critical points between topologically nontrivial phases with fractionally quantized Hall (FQH) conductivity and topologically trivial gapped phases through the discontinuities of the many-body Berry curvature in the so-called flux Brillouin zone (fBZ), the latter being defined by imposing all possible twisted boundary conditions. For this purpose, we study the finite-size signatures of several quantum phase transitions between fractional Chern insulators and charge-ordered phases for two-dimensional lattices by evaluating the many-body Berry curvature numerically using exact diagonalization. We observe degeneracy points (nodes) of many-body energy levels at high-symmetry points in the fBZ, accompanied by diverging Berry curvature. We find a correspondence between the number and order of these nodal points, and the change of the topological invariants of the many-body ground states across the transition, in close analogy with Weyl nodes in non-interacting band structures. This motivates us to apply a scaling procedure, originally developed for non-interacting systems, for the Berry curvature at the nodal points. This procedure offers a useful tool for the classification of topological phase transitions in interacting systems harboring FQH-like topological order.
