Abstract:Based on the concept of classical phase, we formulate a new explanation for the quantum phase from the quantum mechanical point of view. The quantum phase is the canonically conjugate variable of an angular momentum operator, which corresponds to the angular position φ in an actual physical space with a classical reference frame, but it takes a complex exponential form e iφ≡cosφ+i sinφ in the abstract Hilbert space of a quantum reference frame. This formulation is simply the famous Euler formula in a complex number field. In particular, when φ = π/2, the correlative quantum phase is a unitary pure imaginary number e iπ/2≡cos(π/2)+i sin(π/2) ≡ i. By using a photon state-vector function that is the general solution of photon Schrödinger equation and can completely describe a photon’s behavior, we discuss the relationship between the angular momentum of a photon and the phase of the photon; we also analyze the intrinsic relationship between the macroscopic light wave phase and the microscopic photon phase.

Abstract:In this paper, the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory is generalized for the study of systems with non-Hermitian time-dependent Hamiltonians. It is then used to study the nonadiabatic cyclic evolution and the Aharonov-Anandan phase. It is shown that the study of noncyclic evolution can be reduced to the study of cyclic evolution. The two-level dissipative system and the classical time-dependent harmonic oscillator are discussed as illustrative examples.

Abstract:We present commuting projector Hamiltonian realizations of a large class of (3+1)D topological models based on mathematical objects called unitary G-crossed braided fusion categories. This construction comes with a wealth of examples from the literature of symmetry-enriched topological phases. The spacetime counterparts to our Hamiltonians are unitary state sum topological quantum fields theories (TQFTs) that appear to capture all known constructions in the literature, including the Crane-Yetter-Walker-Wang and 2-Group gauge theory models. We also present Hamiltonian realizations of a state sum TQFT recently constructed by Kashaev whose relation to existing models was previously unknown. We argue that this TQFT is captured as a special case of the Crane-Yetter-Walker-Wang model, with a premodular input category in some instances.

Abstract:Recent theoretical insights into the possibility of non-Abelian phases in nu = 2/3 fractional quantum Hall states revived the interest in the numerical phase diagram of the problem. We investigate the effect of various kinds of two-body interlayer couplings on the (330) bilayer state and exactly solve the Hamiltonian for up to 14 electrons on sphere and torus geometries. We consider interlayer tunneling, short-ranged repulsive/attractive pseudopotential interactions, and Coulomb repulsion. We find a 6-fold ground-state degeneracy on the torus when the interlayer hollow-core interaction is dominant. To identify the topological nature of this phase we measure the orbital-cut entanglement spectrum, quasihole counting, topological entanglement entropy, and wave-function overlap. Comparing the numerical results to the theoretical predictions, we interpret this 6-fold ground-state degeneracy phase to be the non-Abelian bilayer Fibonacci state.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize and study dynamical properties of cubic vector fields on the sphere . We start by classifying all degree three polynomial vector fields on and determine which of them form Kolmogorov systems. Then, we show that there exist completely integrable cubic vector fields on and also study the maximum number of various types of invariant great circles for homogeneous cubic vector fields on . We find a tight bound in each case. Further, we also discuss phase portraits of certain cubic Kolmogorov vector fields on .

Abstract:Symmetry is fundamental to topological phases. In the presence of a gauge field, spatial symmetries will be projectively represented, which may alter their algebraic structure and generate novel physics. We show that the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ projectively represented translational symmetry operators adopt a distinct anticommutation relation. As a result, each energy band is twofold degenerate, and carries a varying spinor structure for translation operators in momentum space, which cannot be flattened globally. Moreover, combined with other internal or external symmetries, they give rise to exotic band topologies. Particularly, with the inherent time-reversal symmetry, a single fourfold Dirac point must be enforced at the Brillouin zone corner. By breaking one primitive translation, the Dirac semimetal is shifted into a special topological insulator phase, where the edge bands have a M\"obius twist. Our work opens an arena of research for exploring topological phases protected by projectively represented space groups.

Abstract:This paper presents a global study of the class $\bf{Q}{\widehat{ES}}$ of all real quadratic polynomial differential systems possessing exactly one elemental infinite singular point and one triple infinite singular point, which is either an infinite nilpotent elliptic-saddle or a nilpotent saddle. This class can be divided into three different families, namely, $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}$ of phase portraits possessing three real finite singular points, $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}$ of phase portraits possessing one real and two complex finite singular points, and $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}$ of phase portraits possessing one real triple finite singular point. Here we provide the complete study of the geometry of these three families. Modulo the action of the affine group and time homotheties, families $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}$ and $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}$ are three-dimensional and family $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}$ is two-dimensional. We study the respective bifurcation diagrams of their closures with respect to specific normal forms, in subsets of real Euclidean spaces. The bifurcation diagram of family $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}$ (respectively, $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}$ and $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}$) yields 1274 (respectively, 89 and 14) subsets with 91 (respectively, 27 and 12) topologically distinct phase portraits for systems in the closure $\overline{\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}}$ (respectively, $\overline{\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}}$ and $\overline{\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}}$) within the representatives of $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(A)}}$ (respectively, $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(B)}}$ and $\bf{Q}{{\widehat{ES}(C)}}$) given by a specific normal form.

Abstract:In recent years, fermionic topological phases of quantum matter has attracted a lot of attention. In a pioneer work by Gu, Wang and Wen, the concept of equivalence classes of fermionic local unitary(FLU) transformations was proposed to systematically understand non-chiral topological phases in 2D fermion systems and an incomplete classification was obtained. On the other hand, the physical picture of fermion condensation and its corresponding super pivotal categories give rise to a generic mathematical framework to describe fermionic topological phases of quantum matter. In particular, it has been pointed out that in certain fermionic topological phases, there exists the so-called q-type anyon excitations, which have no analogues in bosonic theories. In this paper, we generalize the Gu, Wang and Wen construction to include those fermionic topological phases with q-type anyon excitations. We argue that all non-chiral fermionic topological phases in 2+1D are characterized by a set of tensors $(N^{ij}_{k},F^{ij}_{k},F^{ijm,\alpha\beta}_{kln,\chi\delta},n_{i},d_{i})$, which satisfy a set of nonlinear algebraic equations parameterized by phase factors $\Xi^{ijm,\alpha\beta}_{kl}$, $\Xi^{ij}_{kln,\chi\delta}$, $\Omega^{kim,\alpha\beta}_{jl}$ and $\Omega^{ki}_{jln,\chi\delta}$. Moreover, consistency conditions among algebraic equations give rise to additional constraints on these phase factors which allow us to construct a topological invariant partition for an arbitrary triangulation of 3D spin manifold. Finally, several examples with q-type anyon excitations are discussed, including the Fermionic topological phase from Tambara-Yamagami category for $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$, which can be regarded as the $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$ parafermion generalization of Ising fermionic topological phase.

Geometrical Meaning of Winding Number and Its Characterization of Topological Phases in One-Dimensional Chiral Non-Hermitian Systems

Abstract:We unveil the geometrical meaning of winding number and utilize it to characterize the topological phases in one-dimensional chiral non-Hermitian systems. While chiral symmetry ensures the winding number of Hermitian systems are integers, it can take half integers for non-Hermitian systems. We give a geometrical interpretation of the half integers by demonstrating that the winding number v of a non-Hermitian system is equal to half of the summation of two winding numbers v(1) and v(2) associated with two exceptional points, respectively. The winding numbers v(1) and v(2) represent the times of the real part of the Hamiltonian in momentum space encircling the exceptional points and can only take integers. We further find that the difference of v(1) and v(2) is related to the second winding number or energy vorticity. By applying our scheme to a non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and an extended version of it, we show that the topologically different phases can be well characterized by winding numbers. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the existence of left and right zero-mode edge states is closely related to the winding number v(1) and v(2).
Exact Universal Characterization of Chiral-Symmetric Higher-Order Topological Phases

Abstract:Utilizing a series of Bott indices formulated through polynomials of position operators, we establish a comprehensive framework for characterizing topological zero-energy corner states in systems with chiral symmetry. Our framework covers systems with arbitrary shape, including topological phases that are not characterizable by previously proposed invariants such as multipole moments or multipole chiral numbers. A key feature of our framework is its ability to capture the real-space pattern of zero-energy corner states. We provide a rigorous analytical proof of its higher-order correspondence. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our theory, we examine several model systems with representative patterns of zero-energy corner states that previous frameworks fail to classify.

Realization of geometric phase topology induced by multiple exceptional points

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems have Riemann surface structures of complex eigenvalues that admit singularities known as exceptional points. Combining with geometric phases of eigenstates gives rise to unique properties of non-Hermitian systems, and their classifications have been studied recently. However, the physical realizations of classes of the classifications have been relatively limited because a small number of modes and exceptional points are involved. In this work, we show in microcavities that all five classes [J.-W. Ryu, et al., Commun. Phys. 7, 109 (2024)] of three modes can emerge with three exceptional points. In demonstrations, we identified various combinations of exceptional points within a two-dimensional parameter space of a single microcavity and defined five distinct encircling loops based on three selected exceptional points. According to the classification, these loops facilitate different mode exchanges and the acquisition of additional geometric phases during the adiabatic encircling of exceptional points. Our results provide a broad description of the geometric phases-associated topology induced by multiple exceptional points in realistic physical systems.

Modulating Hamiltonian Approach to Quantum Many-Body Systems and Crystalline Topological Phases Protected by Generalized Magnetic Translations

Abstract:We discuss the topology of the parameter space of invertible phases with an onsite symmetry $G$, i.e., quantum many-body ground states that have neither fractionalization nor spontaneous breaking of the symmetry. The classification of invertible phases is known to be obtained by counting the connected components in the parameter space of the invertible phases. We consider its generalization -- the deformation classes of the mappings from $n$-dimensional spheres $S^n$ to this parameter space for arbitrary integer $n$. We argue a direct one-to-one correspondence in the framework of lattice models between the non-contractibility of $S^n$ and (i) the classification of invertible phases in $d$ dimensions when $d\geq n$; or (ii) zero-dimensional invertible Hamiltonians parametrized by $S^{n-d}$ when $d<n$, using an isotropic modulating Hamiltonian approach. Explicitly, we construct the noncontractible spheres of two-dimensional invertible phases, i.e., $n=2$ and $d=2$. We also propose a large class of crystalline topological phases protected by a generalized magnetic translations.

Abstract:We construct fixed-point wave functions and exactly solvable commuting-projector Hamiltonians for a large class of bosonic symmetry-enriched topological (SET) phases, based on the concept of equivalent classes of symmetric local unitary transformations. We argue that for onsite unitary symmetries, our construction realizes all SETs free of anomaly, as long as the underlying topological order itself can be realized with a commuting-projector Hamiltonian. We further extend the construction to anti-unitary symmetries (e.g. time-reversal symmetry), mirror-reflection symmetries, and to anomalous SETs on the surface of three-dimensional symmetry-protected topological phases. Mathematically, our construction naturally leads to a generalization of group extensions of unitary fusion categories to anti-unitary symmetries.

Abstract: Real topological phases stemmed from spacetime-inversion ($PT$) symmetry have caught considerable interest recently, because of their extraordinary properties, such as real Dirac semimetals, nontrivial nodal-line linking structures, non-Abelian topological charges, higher-order topological phases, and boundary topological phase transitions with unchanged bulk topological invariants. Such phases rely on the algebraic identity $(PT)^2=1$. Since the identity holds only for spinless fermions, it is a common wisdom that these phases will be destroyed by spin-orbital coupling or magnetic orders. Here, we show that in the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields, the real and symplectic symmetry classes with $(PT)^2=\pm 1$, respectively, can be exchanged due to the projective representation of the symmetry algebra. In other words, we can effectively turn spinful fermions into spinless ones, and hence achieve real topological phases also in spin-orbit coupled systems. This is explicitly demonstrated by a $3$D generalized Kane-Mele model, with the gauge flux configuration that minimizes the ground-state energy due to the Lieb theorem. In the presence of spin-orbital coupling and magnetic ordering, the model realizes novel real topological semimetal phases characterized by the Stiefel-Whitney classes with the aforementioned boundary phase transition. Our work broadens the scope of real topological phases, and more importantly, it reveals a new avenue, namely the projective representation of symmetries, to switch the fundamental categories of system topologies.

Abstract:Abstract We develop a graphic approach for characterizing one-dimensional non-Hermitian topological phases. The eigenstates of energy bands are mapped to a graph on the torus, where a nontrivial topology exhibits as links. The topology of band touching exceptional points is a crucial aspect of a non-Hermitian system; the existence of exceptional point results in networks. We discuss the parity-time (   ) symmetric two-band models. The pseudo-anti-Hermiticity protects the band topology, and the eigenstate graphs in the exact   -symmetric phase locate on the torus surface under the   symmetry protection. For the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger ladder, the eigenstate graph is a Hopf link in the gapped nontrivial phase; chiral-time symmetry protects that the movable exceptional points appear in pairs in the real-energy gapless phase, and each exceptional point splits into a pair of exceptional points when the   symmetry breaks. The proposed graphic approach is applicable in one-dimensional N -band models. Our findings provide insight into one-dimensional non-Hermitian topology phases through visualizing the eigenstates.

Abstract:We define and compute many-body topological invariants of interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases, protected by an orientation-reversing symmetry, such as time-reversal or reflection symmetry. The topological invariants are given by partition functions obtained by a path integral on unoriented spacetime which, as we show, can be computed for a given ground state wave function by considering a non-local operation, "partial" reflection or transpose. As an application of our scheme, we study the $\mathbb{Z}_8$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ classification of topological superconductors in one and three dimensions.
