Abstract:Space nuclear reactor power,with the advantages of high energy density,high output power,long duration,and minimal influence from the external environment,is the preferred route for energy supply for future high-power long-life space missions and deep space exploration missions.Based on the developmental requirements and characteristics of different design options for megawatt-class space nuclear reactors,a technical scheme for a megawatt-class small lithium-cooled space reactor is designed.This scheme uses a lithium-cooled reactor coupled with a Brayton power conversion system that is lightweight and durable.The key technologies involved in the design are reviewed.Developmental progress of technical analysis and demonstration,verification prototype systems,and experimental platforms is presented.Suggestions and comments for developing high-power space nuclear power in China in the future are presented.

Abstract:Abstract With the increasing demands of versatile and long-lasting requirements of deep space missions, space nuclear reactor (SNR) power system is becoming the most potential energy source compared to conventional solar-battery and chemical energy in the future large-scale and long-life space missions. Since the very first successful launch of SNR system (SNAP-10A) in 1965, the United States, the Soviet Union / Russia, the European Union, Japan, Brazil and China have proposed various technical routes and schemes for SNR technologies over the past few decades. This paper presents a historical review of several key technologies (i.e., space nuclear reactor system and thermoelectric conversion system), especially focus on technical progress for recent decade and discusses on-going development activities. The paper also presents a forecast of potential future space applications of these key technologies.

Abstract:Space nuclear reactor systems are to be considered enabling technologies for the establishing of settlements on the Moon and on Mars. Their compactness, high power density, high reliability, long life and lower recurring cost are advantages compared to other energy sources. In addition, space nuclear reactors are capable of operating independent of the Sun, have an enhanced ability to operate in hostile environments and greatly simplify spacecraft attitude and control functions for most missions. On the other hand, space nuclear power systems do require additional mass for shielding radiation-sensitive payloads, and measures to be taken to protect human beings from output nuclear radiations. This paper provides a succinct partial overview of several technical and non-technical issues related to the past and present development of space nuclear power systems, especially applied to lunar exploration. The technical issues explored here are nuclear propulsion, nuclear reactor and power conversion systems and in-situ lunar power generation nuclear reactors. Non-technical matters approached are the public perception of space nuclear power, space policy, budget measures and the reducing space power workforce. ©2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Major research on the application of small movable reactor power systems in space systems, conventional submarines and multi-functional civil ships were reported in this paper. SP-100 (USA), TOPAZ-2 (Russia), ERATO-20 (France), AMPS-I and AMPS-II (Canada), as well as DRX (Japan) were introduced. The research indicates that due to their special merits, the small movable reactor power systems will be applied to space systems, conventional submarines and multi-functional civil ships in the next century.

Abstract:With the rising prices of oil and natural gas, and under the emission reduction demand of green house gas (GHG), the nuclear energy is causing wide concern. At the same time, some of the nuclear plants and nuclear facilities in Europe and America are out of decommission continuously, which provides not only the excuses to the nuclear opposition camp, but also the opportunities of nuclear development under the conditions of proper disposal of nuclear waste. This paper summarizes the current status and features of nuclear energy utilization, the research of nuclear energy technologies which includes nuclear technologies of Gen III and Gen IV, the nuclear fusion and the nuclear fuel cycle, etc.. The nuclear future prospect is also provided, with suggestions to China nuclear development.

Abstract:Marine nuclear power equipment (MNPE) is crucial for the sustainable energy supply and carbon emission reduction during deep-sea resource exploitation. However, China has not achieved breakthroughs in the field of civil MNPE, although it has a good foundation in the nuclear and marine equipment industries. Based on the research of MNPE development practices in China and abroad, this study summarizes the advantages and technical sources of MNPE, analyzes future application scenarios and development trends, clarifies the strategic demand and problems of MNPE development in China, and proposes several development suggestions. Currently, MNPE is extending from military to civil use and from land to sea, and its main technical source is compact and integrated pressurized water reactors. In the near future, the equipment types of MNPE will focus on offshore floating nuclear power plants and nuclear-powered icebreakers. To promote the high-quality development of MNPE, it is necessary to clarify the major application scenarios of MNPE in China through top-level planning, formulate regulations, specifications, and supervisory systems through demonstration projects to match with practical development demands, and achieve breakthroughs regarding key technologies such as the construction of marine reactor systems and nuclear power platform assemblies.

Abstract:Fast reactor plays an important role in the sustainable development of nuclear energy,and it is a key reactor type that be committed to develop all over the world.The reactor physics calculation is the basis of fast reactor core design,and the research of related methods and the development of corresponding computing codes are very impor-tant in the R&D of fast reactor theory and numerical simulation technology.In this paper,the developments of reactor physics analysis methods for the fast reactors,espe-cially the developments in the past 20 years are reviewed.By reviewing the dedicated and general computing codes developed at home and abroad for the fast reactors,the progress of fast reactor physics analysis theory is introduced.Inside,the consistency among different methods and the trend of the developments in recent years are discussed.Furthermore,the suggestions for the development of fast reactor physics analysis methods and for the progress of independent software development in our coun-try are provide.

Abstract:Enhancing the capabilities of unmanned space exploration, such as satellite monitoring and space science missions, requires efficient and reliable nuclear power systems. A viable solution is found in the 1∼10 kWe power level of space nuclear reactor power systems, offering advantages such as a manageable research and development process, and relatively low investment requirements. This paper introduces a conceptual design for a 5 kWe space nuclear reactor power system, outlining its components and characteristics. The study includes a thorough analysis of potential challenges, encompassing heat pipe failure accidents, re-entry scenarios, and weight estimation considerations. The results demonstrate that the proposed space nuclear reactor power system effectively meets the safety requirements. The total mass of the power system is estimated at approximately 1.5 tons, with a specific mass of around 300 kg/kWe. This research contributes valuable insights for the design of space nuclear reactor power systems operating within a similar power range.

Abstract:The major challenges of the nuclear power are economic competition, safety, profilication resistance and waste storage. The safety of the nuclear power plants has been enhanced continuously in order to improve the public acceptance. The de regulation of the electricity market in the United States and Europe encourages the competition between the different power generation technologies. The waste storage has been paid great attention. The ALWRs like ABWR, System 80+, EPR and AP 600 development from mid of 1980s are the major commercial products available in the market in the near future. When the time enter the 21 century, US DOE is planning to develop the Generation IV nuclear power system, in order to design one or more nuclear power systems that is market available before or in the year of 2020 and could be used to replace the current nuclear power plants. The modular pebble bed High Temperature Gas cooled Reactor (HTGR) is considered as a prefer candidate in the Generation IV nuclear power systems. The South Africa selected the modular HTGR as the reactor type to develop. The 10 MW test HTGR (HTR 10) designed and constructed in Tsinghua University Beijing is scheduled to reach critical in the year of 2000. Based on the HTR 10 project, China has established her preliminary capability of designing, constructing and manufacturing pebble bed modular HTGRs.

Abstract:Nuclear heating reactor is a new type of power plant that uses nuclear energy as heat source. Low temperature nuclear heating reactor should be the forerunner and main force for developing nuclear heating plant in China. Due to the lower water temperature required by the heating system, this dedicated, non-power generating nuclear reactor works at low temperatures and pressures with inherent safety features. The design, construction and operation of the nuclear heating reactors in various countries in the world were reviewed in this paper, and China's new demonstration nuclear heating project and NHR-200 low-temperature heating reactor which would be used was discussed in the paper. We put forward the developing route and suggestion for the development of low-temperature heating reactor in China.

Abstract:China is rich in a variety of energy resources, but because of a huge population, her energy resources per capita is small, and China’s composition of energy resources is irrational, and the energy resource distribution and productivity layout are out of balance. As a kind of clean energy, nuclear power plays an irreplaceable role in meeting the energy challenges. Developing nuclear power is an effective way in China's adjustment of the energy distribution. At present, China’s nuclear power development has entered a stage of large-scaled stage in certain quantities. With advancing of technology and back-feeding of the operation experience, and with gradual introduction of the new and mature technologies, the safety of the second generation upgraded PWR nuclear power plants has been materially and further improved. Needless to say, the third generation nuclear technology should be actively introduced and digested for an even higher safety goal and for even higher technology advancement. Speeding up development of the thermal breeder reactor and constructing the nuclear fuel cycle system can dramatically increase the uranium utilization efficiency from the present less than 1% to 60% ~ 70%, thus can effectively prevent the threat from the exhaustion of uranium resources.

Abstract:The heat pipe cooled reactor featured with small volume, high power density, long lifetime and high adaptability to environment, has promising applications for space exploration and underwater vehicles. Thus there is great significance of conducting reactor design and analysis. Based on a series of literature reviews, a 2. 4 MWth lithium heat pipe cooled reactor core with long lifetime and low level noise was designed. Monte Carlo program MCNP was used for calculating the power distribution, reactivity feedback and critical safety characteristics of the reactor core. A code MCORE coupling MCNP5and ORIGEN2was used for calculating the core lifetime. The results show that the peak power factor is 1. 42, the core lifetime is 14a, and core parameters satisfy the requirements, which provide reference to the design and application of the micro nuclear power source.

Abstract:With the rapid development of computer science and technology, numerical simulation has become one of scientific research methods after theory research and experiment research, and it is now playing a very important role in the R&D of nuclear reactors. At present, the decoupled and conservative analysis method is commonly used in the commercial nuclear reactor design. With higher requirements of the society for safer, more economic and more sustainable nuclear energy, the current analysis methods can no longer support for improving the safety and economy of nuclear reactors in service and the R&D of new reactors. It is necessary to establish a new highfidelity numerical method based on the best estimation and uncertainty analysis to minimize the assumptions and approximations. The tightcouple simulation could reduce unnecessary conservative margins and realize the mechanism analysis of various physical phenomena in the reactor core. It is hoped to replace most experiments with the numerical nuclear reactor. At present, it has become a hot-topic in the world, and most developed countries have released their own numerical reactor research plans. In the INERI (International Nuclear Energy Research Initiative) program initiated by the United States in 2002, the United States and South Korea launched a numerical reactor plan, which firstly proposed the concept of a highfidelity numerical reactor. In 2010, the US Department of Energy established the CASL program and the NEAMS program. In addition to the United States, Europe also conducted investigations since 2002. In 2005, the NURE series plans, the CORTEX plan and the HPMC/McSAFE plan have been carried out, and these plans now buildup highfidelity numerical simulation tools for Europe. Since the introduce of the AP1000 pressurized water reactor (PWR) technology in 2007, China has invested a lot in the R&D of thirdgeneration nuclear power technology with independent intellectual property rights， such as HPR1000 and CAP1400. Numerical reactor technology, as an important direction for the future development of nuclear energy technology, has received great attention in China. Many domestic institutes have carried out the R&D on the highfidelity numerical reactor technology. Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics, Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute Co., Ltd., and Xi’an Jiaotong University curried out the development of the CAP1400 numerical reactor system supported by a major project of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The CAP1400 reactor core has been simulated with the developed tools, and it provides technical support for the design, construction and operation of the CAP1400 demonstration project, and provides technical support for the preresearch of CAP1700 nuclear power plant. Supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, China Institute of Atomic Energy, together with University of Science and Technology Beijing and the Computer Network Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have carried out a numerical reactor prototype system project. The goal is to develop a reactor simulation software for Eclass supercomputing, and realize demonstration applications of fourthgeneration fast reactors. At present, the development of the main modules of the largescale parallel numerical reactor prototype system CVR10 has been initially completed, and preliminary demonstration application is performed. While carrying out numerical reactor technology research, Harbin Engineering University and Nuclear Power Institute of China are working on the digital reactor programs, such as “Digital Reactor Engineering Key Technology Research”, “Longteng 2020” and “Digital Nuclear Power Plant R&D Platform”, and a lot of work has been done with the goal of building a 3D digital nuclear power plant. Based on the investigation and analysis of the numerical reactor technology development at home and abroad, some suggestions on the development of domestic numerical reactor technology are given.

Abstract:Aiming at the new requirements of the current development of space technolo-gy ,based on the designs of the space nuclear power system proposed by foreign coun-tries ,a new concept of the nuclear power system design with a megawatt class space heat pipe reactor was designed .The core was a metal lithium heat pipe cooling ,graphite moderated thermal reactor ,and used drums to control reactivity .The core fission heat was rejected through the heat pipe .Different from the staggered arrangement of the fuel rod and the heat pipe in the foreign designs ,a heat pipe-fuel composite element that the fuel was wrapped in the outer wall of the heat pipe was applied in this paper .The Brayton dynamic thermoelectric conversion using helium-xenon mixed gas as working fluid was applied as the energy conversion method .System waste heat was transferred by the sodium-potassium alloy cooling circuit to the potassium heat pipe radiation panels ,and rejected into space by radiation .Physical and thermal analysis of the heat pipe reactor core and the performance analysis of heat pipe radiation panels were opera-ted .The results show that the designed heat pipe reactor core meets the safety require-ments under design power ,and the heat pipe radiation panels have sufficient capacity to export system waste heat .
