Abstract:The design philosophy, overall performance, safety, and economy of three typical generation III (GIII) pressurized water reactors, EPR, AES2006, and CAP1400, are analyzed comprehensively in this paper. Based on comparison with and the lessons learned from the Fukushima nuclear accident, we forecast a future reactor for China’s commercial nuclear power plant. Moreover, we put forward important technological fields of GIII nuclear power plants to which attention should be paid, including the enhancement of defense in depth, defense against extreme external events, severe accident mitigation, design simplification and standardization, improvement in economic competitiveness, load following capability, and adaptation to climate change.

Abstract:Since nuclear power become one of the main energy sources in daily life, pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant has been widely utilized around the world. Meanwhile, as renewable energy, solar photovoltaic power and wind power have been regarded as important energy sources in the future. This paper proposes a numerical model based on the second law of thermodynamics to analyze the efficiency and the thermal emission of power generation system. Such model will be applied to analyze the man process of energy conversion in power generation system. It is proved that solar photovoltaic power and wind power are more environmentally friendly than nuclear power.

Abstract:Combined with the development of energy in China during the past 30 years, this paper clarified that high steam parameters ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plants and 1000MW nuclear power plants are the most important method to optimize energy structure and achieve national goals of energy saving and CO2 emission in China. Additionally, requirement of materials technology in high steam parameters USC coal-fired power plants and 1000MW nuclear power plants, current research and major development of relevant materials technology in China were briefly described in this paper.

Abstract:The major challenges of the nuclear power are economic competition, safety, profilication resistance and waste storage. The safety of the nuclear power plants has been enhanced continuously in order to improve the public acceptance. The de regulation of the electricity market in the United States and Europe encourages the competition between the different power generation technologies. The waste storage has been paid great attention. The ALWRs like ABWR, System 80+, EPR and AP 600 development from mid of 1980s are the major commercial products available in the market in the near future. When the time enter the 21 century, US DOE is planning to develop the Generation IV nuclear power system, in order to design one or more nuclear power systems that is market available before or in the year of 2020 and could be used to replace the current nuclear power plants. The modular pebble bed High Temperature Gas cooled Reactor (HTGR) is considered as a prefer candidate in the Generation IV nuclear power systems. The South Africa selected the modular HTGR as the reactor type to develop. The 10 MW test HTGR (HTR 10) designed and constructed in Tsinghua University Beijing is scheduled to reach critical in the year of 2000. Based on the HTR 10 project, China has established her preliminary capability of designing, constructing and manufacturing pebble bed modular HTGRs.

Abstract:With the rising prices of oil and natural gas, and under the emission reduction demand of green house gas (GHG), the nuclear energy is causing wide concern. At the same time, some of the nuclear plants and nuclear facilities in Europe and America are out of decommission continuously, which provides not only the excuses to the nuclear opposition camp, but also the opportunities of nuclear development under the conditions of proper disposal of nuclear waste. This paper summarizes the current status and features of nuclear energy utilization, the research of nuclear energy technologies which includes nuclear technologies of Gen III and Gen IV, the nuclear fusion and the nuclear fuel cycle, etc.. The nuclear future prospect is also provided, with suggestions to China nuclear development.

Abstract:China is rich in a variety of energy resources, but because of a huge population, her energy resources per capita is small, and China’s composition of energy resources is irrational, and the energy resource distribution and productivity layout are out of balance. As a kind of clean energy, nuclear power plays an irreplaceable role in meeting the energy challenges. Developing nuclear power is an effective way in China's adjustment of the energy distribution. At present, China’s nuclear power development has entered a stage of large-scaled stage in certain quantities. With advancing of technology and back-feeding of the operation experience, and with gradual introduction of the new and mature technologies, the safety of the second generation upgraded PWR nuclear power plants has been materially and further improved. Needless to say, the third generation nuclear technology should be actively introduced and digested for an even higher safety goal and for even higher technology advancement. Speeding up development of the thermal breeder reactor and constructing the nuclear fuel cycle system can dramatically increase the uranium utilization efficiency from the present less than 1% to 60% ~ 70%, thus can effectively prevent the threat from the exhaustion of uranium resources.
Current status of nuclear power and HTR development in China

Abstract:Nuclear power units with a total capacity of 8.9 GW have been built in China. Nuclear capacity is expected to increase to 40 GW by 2020. Chinese economic development has exerted great demands on nuclear energy. Nevertheless, to develop nuclear energy in China, various favorable and unfavorable factors must be taken into consideration. A pebble bed test reactor (HTR-10) has been built and is now under operation in China. Operational and major safety experiments have been conducted. The HTR-IOGT project, which is to couple a helium gas turbine facility to the HTR-10 reactor, is being carried out. Design and project work has been started for the high temperature gas cooled reactor demonstration plant (HTR-PM), which the government and industries have lent strong support. This paper introduces the latest progress of the projects and the nuclear development till April 2006 and some research achievement is presented.

Abstract:In order to ensure the long-term nuclear power development in China,it is of crucial importance to deploy the innovative nuclear systems of generation Ⅳ(GEN-Ⅳ).Among the six GEN-Ⅳ reactor concepts recommended by the GEN-Ⅳ InternationalForum(GIF),supercritical water-cooled reactor(SCWR) is the only reactor type with water as coolant.Due to its economical advantage,technology and experience continuity,SCWR has attracted significant interests of nuclear industries and research institutions.It is also well recognized as an inevitable extension of the existing nuclear power plants,which mainly utilize water-cooled reactors.This paper presents the main technical features of SCWR and its position in the Chinese long-term nuclear power development.The ongoing research and development activities were summarized and the future needs were clarified.Finally,a roadmap of the development of China SCWR wasproposed.

Abstract:Nuclear energy is presented as a real option in the face of the current problem of climate change and the need to reduce CO2 emissions. The nuclear reactor design with the greatest global impact throughout history and which has the most ambitious development plans is the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). Thus, a global review of such a reactor design is presented in this paper, utilizing the analysis of (i) technical aspects of the different variants of the PWR design implemented over the past eight years, (ii) the level of implementation of PWR nuclear power plants in the world, and (iii) a life extension scenario and future trends in PWR design based on current research and development (R&D) activity. To develop the second analysis, a statistical study of the implementation of the different PWR variants has been carried out. Such a statistical analysis is based on the operating factor, which represents the relative frequency of reactors operating around the world. The results reflect the hegemony of the western variants in the 300 reactors currently operating, highlighting the North American and French versions. Furthermore, a simulation of a possible scenario of increasing the useful life of operational PWRs up to 60 years has been proposed, seeing that in 2050 the generation capacity of nuclear PWRs power plants will decrease by 50%, and the number of operating reactors by 70%.

Up to now, some research reactors have serviced for long time and equipments have aged, no longer satisfying the requirements of science and technology development. New research reactors must be developed. The technical features and safe features of new type research reactors in China, such as multiple utilization, compact core of high flux, high automation level of control, reactor with two independent shutdown systems, great coefficient of negative temperature, passive safety systems, reliable residual heat removal system, are studied.

Abstract:Abstract Since the first commercial nuclear plant Obninsk began to operate, there have been dozens of types of nuclear plants studied, designed, or constructed nowadays driven by the key issue: how to enhance the economic competitiveness of nuclear plants while ensuring safety. Research on the key issue stimulated the evolution of nuclear plants, which simultaneously brought an array of various control problems for each generation and ultimately attributed to the evolution of control strategies of nuclear plants. In this paper, the main development route of nuclear plants is presented with a concise introduction to the representative design of nuclear plants for each generation. Meanwhile, the corresponding control problems brought by the design and/or the safety requirement document, national and international requirements, and so forth, were analyzed with emphasis on the Gen IV multi-modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (MHTGR). On account of the requirement to cooperate with other renewable energies to achieve the “Emission peak, Carbon neutrality” through the improvement of operation flexibility of NPP, most SMR plants work in the reactor following mode which requires more R&D efforts on the coordination control and load-following control to enhance economic advantages of SMR plants, etc.

Abstract:It is well known that electrical-power generation plays the key role in advances in industry, agriculture, technology, and standard of living. Also, strong power industry with diverse energy sources is very important for a country's independence. In general, electrical energy can be mainly generated from: (1) nonrenewable energy sources (75.5% of the total electricity generation) such as coal (38.3%), natural gas (23.1%), oil (3.7%), and nuclear (10.4%); and (2) renewable energy sources (24.5%) such as hydro, biomass, wind, geothermal, solar, and marine power. Today, the main sources for electrical-energy generation are: (1) thermal power (61.4%)—primarily using coal and secondarily using natural gas; (2) “large” hydro-electric plants (16.6%); and (3) nuclear power (10.4%). The balance of the energy sources (11.6%) is from using oil, biomass, wind, geothermal, and solar, and has visible impact just in a few countries. This paper presents the current status of electricity generation in the world, various sources of industrial electricity generation and role of nuclear power with a comparison of nuclear-energy systems to other energy systems. A comparison of the latest data on electricity generation with those several years old shows that world usage of coal, gas, nuclear, and oil has decreased by 1–2%, but usage of renewables has increased by 1% for hydro and 2% for other renewable sources. Unfortunately, within last years, electricity generation with nuclear power has decreased from 14% before the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) severe accident in March 2011 to about 10%. Therefore, it is important to evaluate current status of nuclear-power industry and to make projections on near (5–10 yr) and far away (10–25 yr and beyond) future trends.

Abstract:High temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR) together with its successor, the very high temperature reactor, is one of the six nuclear energy systems identified and selected by the Generation IV International Forum for further development. The paper briefly summarizes the technical characteristics of HTGR and reviews the recent research and development status of HTGR technology at home and abroad. It also discusses the strategic positioning of HTGR in China and looks ahead to the HTGR technology development road map in China. China has gone through the stages such as tracking, stepping over, and independent innovation in the past years, and now is in the front-runner status with respect to the commercial-level HTGR nuclear power plant. On this basis, China is working on the design of 600 MW pebble bed HTGR (HTR-PM600), so as to further promote industrialization of the HTGR technology and stay ahead in this field.

Abstract:After the nuclear accidents of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl the world nuclear community made great efforts to increase research on nuclear reactors and to develop advanced nuclear power plants with much improved safety features. Following the successful construction and a most gratifying operation of the 10MWth high-temperature gas-cooled test reactor (HTR-10), the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology (INET) of Tsinghua University has developed and designed an HTR demonstration plant, called the HTR-PM (high-temperature-reactor pebble-bed module). The design, having jointly been carried out with industry partners from China and in collaboration of experts worldwide, closely follows the design principles of the HTR-10.

According to the latest statistics, the annual primary energy consumption in China reaches 2613 Mtoe in 2011 with an average annual increase of 9.02% over the period of 2000-2011.
