Abstract:Experimental and theoretical investigation of prompt nitrogen oxides emission in flame of different gaseous fuels were carried out with purpose of minimizing total NOx yield. The effect of the following factors was determined: air excess from 0.3 to 1.1, flame temperature, heating flame rate, fuel content. It was found that, if air excess was less than 0.65, some prompt NOx converted to N2 in consequence of reacting with hydrocarbon radicals.

Abstract:Numerical calculations of the laminar counterflow diffusion flames of methane-air are conducted to quantitatively study NO formations from different reaction pathways (mechanisms) at various pressures and/or initial air temperatures. A modified method, which deactivates the initiating reactions in a specific reaction pathway only for NO production while maintaining interactions with other pathways, is developed to calculate NO formation in each mechanism. Results indicate that in the thermal, prompt, N2O, and NNH reaction mechanisms, the NO production rate largely increases as the pressure or the initial air temperature increases, and in particular, as these two parameters are increased together as in a practical combustion system. In the thermal pathway, as the pressure is increased to 15 atm, NO is produced almost entirely on the fuel-lean side. In the prompt pathway, NO production generally occurs in regions with the progress variable ranging from 0.8 to 0.95; the maximum NO production rate moves from the fuel-rich towards the stoichiometric region as the pressure is increased. NO formation from the N2O or NNH mechanism occurs mainly at high pressures, but the corresponding production rate is an order of magnitude smaller than that from the thermal or prompt mechanism, respectively. In all the reaction mechanisms, NO consumption occurs through the reburn mechanism on the fuel-rich side, and the consumption rate significantly increases as the pressure and initial air temperature increase. Results herein provide a quantitative understanding of the effects of pressure and temperature on NO formations from different reaction mechanisms.

Abstract:A theoretical investigation on a kinetic mechanism of nitrous oxide formation in flames with different fuels was carried out for purposes of minimizing the total NOx yield. The effect of fuel type and combustion condition on N2O emission is discussed. It is found that N2O constitutes a relatively small fraction of the total NOx formation, but it is of great importance to both NO formation and NO reduction from fuel nitrogen (Nf) and molecular nitrogen (N2).

Abstract:In the face of climate change, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy sources is crucial. Ammonia, as a carbon-free and renewable fuel, exhibits significant potential as an alternative energy source. By incorporating hydrogen as an additive, its flammability can be improved to meet the requirements of existing spark ignition engines. However, comprehending the characteristics of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions resulting from the combustion of ammonia-hydrogen fuel blends poses challenges due to the contribution of both fuel NOx and thermal NOx. Therefore, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the fuel NOx behavior during ammonia-hydrogen combustion is of great importance. This paper focuses on investigating fuel NOx exclusively by utilizing an argon-oxygen atmosphere, which eliminates nitrogen from the oxidizer and its role in thermal NOx formation. The study conducts a fundamental investigation into the formation and evolution characteristics of fuel NOx during ammonia-hydrogen combustion under engine-like conditions. The findings indicate that fuel NOx acts as intermediate products, potentially originating from chemical equilibrium calculations. While fuel NO predominantly forms in the burning zone, it undergoes reduction in the burned zone, despite being the primary NOx species. N2O, absent in thermal NOx mechanisms, exhibits significant concentrations within the burning zone and is mostly converted to N-2, resulting in limited N2O concentration in the ultimate NOx concentration. Lean burn conditions, hydrogen addition, and oxyfuel combustion all promote fuel NOx formation. Furthermore, the equivalence ratio influences the structure of the ammonia-hydrogen premixed flame due to the de-NOx effect of ammonia. Collectively, these findings highlight that fuel NOx mechanisms differ from thermal NOx mechanisms, necessitating distinct NOx reduction technologies to achieve low-NOx-emission spark ignition engines.

Abstract:Nitrogen oxides (NOx: NO2 and NO) are the main pollutants produced in combustion. Previous studies have focused on the NOx forming mechanism and control strategies but have paid less attention to the interaction between NOx and hydrocarbon fuels; even a small amount of NOx can significantly affect the ignitions of hydrocarbons. The ignition characteristic is of great importance for the optimization design and operation control of engines such as diesel engines, which are affected by the self-ignition characteristics of fuels. In this study, a rapid compression machine was used to measure the ignition delay times of seven fuel-lean C2H6/O-2/Ar mixtures with [NO2]/[C2H6] ranging from 0.0 to 50% at T-c = 760-970 K and P-c = 30 bar. The results exhibit no negative temperature coefficient phenomenon in the ignition of ethane with or without NO2. A great reduction in the ignition delay time and the global activation energy is observed in the presence of NO2, which becomes more noticeable with increasing the NO2 concentration. Subsequently, four literature models involving the C2H6/NO2 chemistry were validated against the new measurements. Moreover, the key elementary reactions and important reaction channels controlling the ignition of C2H6/NO2 mixtures were then identified by the detailed chemical kinetic analysis.

Abstract:Taking CH_4 and LPG(liquefied petroleum gas) flames as the objects of study,NO_x emission properties of flames,with different premixing proportions,were experimentally investigated under various environmental temperature conditions.Test results show that there exists a critical environmental temperature for each of the two flames,below which,NO_x formation,varying with premixing rate,according its genetic mechanism,may be divided into 3 stages: at first prompt NO_x plays the primary role,then prompt NO_x appears mixed with thermal NO_x,finally thermal NO_x prevails;while above the critical temperature,thermal NO_x formation prevails all the way.Research also shows that,within a certain temperature range,with full diffusion or low premixing conditions,the relationship between NO_x emission and environmental temperature is basically a quadratic function,whereas under full or high premixing conditions,NO_x emission hardly exhibits any change with environmental temperature variation.

Abstract:In the combustion process of pulverized coal,the emission of NOx is mainly occurred from conversion of nitrogen contained in the fuel,making more nitrogen contained in the fuel to be converted into N2,the NOx emission can be reduced.Therefore,in the initial time of combustion,a sufficient stage of pyrolysis has to be ensured,and a section of reduction zone above the burners has to be maintained.The reciprocity of volatile metters and coal char,as well as the combination of deep air-staged combustion with low NOx burners all are advantageous to reduce the NOx emission to a lower level.

Abstract:Exhaust gas retained in a cylinder is unavoidable, affecting diesel spray ignition. However, its effects on diesel spray ignition characteristics are not completely clear so far, due to the coupled and complicated function of exhaust gas compositions and dilution effects. To reveal the effect mechanism, three-dimensional simulations and chemical kinetics calculations were performed. The results illustrate that with the rise of exhaust gas rate, the initial position of the flame moves downward due to the longer ignition delay. The introduction of exhaust gas compositions decreases both the low-temperature and high-temperature ignition delay while dilution on oxygen mass fraction primarily affects and prolongs the high-temperature ignition delay. Nitric oxide (NO) significantly decreases the ignition delay compared to other exhaust gas compositions, with the high-temperature ignition delay experiencing a substantial decrease of 33.33% under 500 ppm NO addition at the ambient temperature of 820K. With the NO addition in the fresh intake air, conversion reactions occur between NO and nitrogen dioxide, and the reactions of NO with hydroperoxyl (HO 2 ) and nitrogen dioxide with hydrogen radical lead to the generation of hydroxyl radical throughout the low- and high-temperature ignition stages, which enhances system reactivity and contributes to a decrease of ignition delay. The decrease in the oxygen mass fraction significantly reduces the rate of production of HO 2 and hydrogen peroxide, which results in a decrease in the rate of production of hydrogen peroxide decomposition and HO 2 deoxidation into hydroxyl radicals, prolonging the high-temperature ignition. The revealed mechanism may be applicable to the diagnosis of exhaust gas residual fault phenomenon.

Abstract:Co-feeding NO can show an interesting boosting role in the soot combustion reaction, but the molecular-level mechanism remains unsettled and thus hinders the rational optimization of such an important catalytic system. Herein, a first-principles study integrating with microkinetic model is performed to quantitatively explore the catalytic mechanism of soot combustion on CeO2(111) in the presence of NO, aiming to unravel the origin of promotional effect of NO. The catalytic activities of different N-containing species evolved from NO oxidation, i.e. nitrite/nitrate trapped at O vacancy sites and the surface-bound nitrate, which are the generally supposed species for boosting soot combustion, are explicitly examined. The microkinetic result indicates that the soot combustion activity in the presence of NO at the typical temperature of 600 K is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than that in the absence of NO. Despite the improved reactivities relative to the pristine CeO2(111), we find that these oxidative species themselves are unexpectedly not the most crucial in facilitating soot combustion at the typical experimental condition; the in-situ generated O vacancies from the NO oxidation side-reaction largely enhance the adsorption of more reactive peroxide O22−, which indirectly contribute more to the overall soot combustion efficiency. Moreover, the effects of temperature and NO partial pressure on modulating the soot combustion are discussed with the optimal value provided. These insights deepen understanding of the NO effect on soot combustion and could facilitate the optimization of after-treat system in diesel exhaust emission.

Abstract:In order to investigate the chemical kinetic insight of ammonia combustion and NOx formation by ac-tive promoters, experiment has been conducted in a jet-stirred reactor. This work focuses on ammonia blended with propane oxidation kinetic. Mole fractions of intermediates were detected and measured at the temperature range of 800-1250 K, the equivalence ratio of 0.5-2.0 and the propane volume ratio of 0.2-0.8. NUIG model was chosen as base model of ammonia/propane. Zhang et al. was selected as ammo-nia sub-mech through validated against the large set of experimental data related to the combustion of ammonia. Then it was modified based on sensitivity analysis using high-level quantum calculation results, referred as M-NUIG model. M-NUIG model can accurately predict experimental data under various con-ditions. Pathway analysis was conducted on ammonia combustion under the condition where ammonia is rapidly consumed. HCO, CH3 and IC3H7 are produced through propane oxidation, which further trig-ger the OH and HO2 formation. This pathway boosts the consumption of ammonia. Mole fraction of NO does not change monotonically with temperature, which increases first and then decreases, and increases finally. The deep kinetic mechanism of NO formation and reduction in ammonia oxidation were investi-gated. At the temperature range of 900 to 10 0 0 K, NO formation reactions are less favorable while NO reduction reactions are more dominant. Therefore, NO concentration increases first, and then decreases. With the further increase of temperature, larger formation of active radicals H, O, OH, NH2, NH and HNO radicals leads to the rising of NO formation.(c) 2023 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:Char-bound nitrogen [char(N)] is confirmed to be the real intermediate in heterogeneous reduction during coal combustion. Aiming to have a deep insight into the interaction mechanism between NO and char(N) containing different functional forms of nitrogen, a comprehensive theoretical exploration with density functional theory at M06–2X/6–31G(d,p)//def-TZVP level is performed. The detailed electronic descriptions of char(N) surface based on spin density, Mulliken atomic charge and electrostatic potential exhibit the attack sites and electron donating capability during NO chemisorption in the following order: char(N-5) < char(N-X) < char(N-6). Oxygen surface complex, an intermediate for N2O formation and a catalyst for NO reduction, can weaken the connected CN bond and promote N2 separation. The migration of oxygen atoms to adjacent active sites is thermodynamically conducive to reduction reactions, leading to the preferred pathway of N2 release on char(N-5) and char(N-X) surfaces. Contiguous active sites remaining along char edge are unfavorable for N2O detaching, while beneficial to NO further chemisorption for consecutive reactions, resulting in the great contributions of char(N-5) in reducing NO. The lower energy barriers for NO reduction follow the sequence coincident with the results of electronic property analysis. The kinetically favorable temperatures and activation energies of different char(N) for reducing NO are determined, which is consistent with previous experiments. The theoretical results provide evidences to explain microscopic mechanism of NO-char(N) interaction, making contributions to effectively minimize NOx emissions in the future.

Abstract:Ammonia is an ideal renewable, carbon-free fuel and hydrogen carrier, which produces nitrogen and water after complete combustion in the presence of oxygen. However, ammonia has low reactivity, slow flame-propagation speed, and carries risks of high nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Co-firing ammonia with an industrial by-product gas (with CH4 and CO being the main combustible materials) is a cost-effective and convenient method of improving the combustion characteristics of ammonia, but attention still needs to be paid to the NOx generation. Currently, the research on NOx formation during co-firing of ammonia with other fuel gases is still insufficient. In this study, a high-temperature furnace reaction system was used to investigate the NOx formation and inhibition mechanisms during the combustion of NH3/CH4 and NH3/CO mixtures. By varying the ammonia blending ratio, excess air coefficient (α), temperature, residence time, and fuel concentration, the key factors influencing NOx generation and inhibition were further analyzed. The results showed that when α was no less than 1, the production of NOx initially increased and then decreased with an increasing proportion of ammonia in the fuel gas. Within the temperature range of 900 °C to 1500 °C, the amount of NOx generated during the combustion of the mixed gas gradually decreased with the increase in temperature. Under the conditions of NH3/CH4 and NH3/CO, the emissions of NOx were higher than those during pure ammonia combustion.

Abstract:The volatile combustion and NO release characteristics of pulverized fuel (PF) flames in an optical flat-flame entrained-flow reactor were investigated by CH∗/NO∗ chemiluminescence imaging. Pyrolyzed bituminous (PB) char with an ultralow volatile content (Vdaf≈10%) and a comparative coal sample of Shenhua (SH) bituminous coal with a high volatile content (Vdaf = 34.2%) were studied under different ambient O2 mole fractions (10%∼30%). The initiation of the combustion region of PB char occurs later than SH bituminous coal, owing to its low volatile contents, a slow devolatilization rate, and homogeneous-heterogeneous ignition/combustion mode. By measuring probed solid and gas samples, the conversion ratios of fuel-N to NO and the releasing ratios of volatile-N/char-N were determined in ignition process. Semi-quantitative NO release integral intensity and volatile combustion intensity results were obtained by integrating the NO∗ or CH∗ chemiluminescence intensity in the corresponding reaction region. The volatile combustion and NO release show good synchronous for Shenhua bituminous coal, which means that the NO releasing originated predominantly and owned higher conversion ratio from the volatile-N in the ignition region. The NO release integral intensity and NO emission of SH bituminous coal decreased with O2 concentration increased from 20% to 30%, which indicates that the enriched-O2 environment is beneficial for high volatiles bituminous to decrease NOx emission in ignition stage. For PB char, NO releasing originated predominantly from the char heterogeneous reactions of char-N in its ignition and combustion late stage.

Abstract:To understand the NOx reduction mechanism of Shenhua coal during reburning process,the dynamic releasing and reduction characteristics of NOx by combustion and reburning at different oxygen volume fraction were investigated.The experiments were conducted on an electrically heated fix bed reactor equipped with online flue gas analyzer.Results show that the formation of NOx has bimodal distribution of volatile NOx and char NOx during combustion.The amounts of NOx keep near-linearly increasing with the increasing oxygen volume fraction at 0%~18%.The NOx amount formed at oxygen volume fraction of 15% is nearly 11 times than that of 0%.The NOx profile during reburning process has two valleys including volatile's homogeneous reduction process and char's heterogeneous reduction process.The homogeneous reduction process of volatile has greater effect than the heterogeneous process of char on the NOx reduction,and the homogeneous process is sensitive to the atmosphere change.When oxygen volume fraction is larger than 7%,the coal reburning process is ineffective for NOx reduction.

Abstract:Nitrogen oxides (NOx) as the principal air pollutants are mainly from the combustion of fossil fuels. Oxy-fuel combustion is a promising clean coal technology, by which carbon dioxide (CO2) can be captured in large-scale and NOx emission can be reduced significantly. The formation of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in oxy-fuel combustion exceeds that under traditional air condition. However, the specific studies on NO2 chemistry under oxy-fuel condition are still insufficient and the functional mechanisms of minerals and combustion atmosphere on NO2 reduction have yet to be fully understood. The objective of present study is to experimentally clarify the effects of combustion atmosphere and coal char on NO2 reduction in oxy-fuel combustion using a fixed-bed reactor. Experimental results showed that the decomposition of NO2 had a strong temperature dependence and the NO2 reduction rate showed a positive variation with temperature. The strength of catalytic activity in NO2 reduction to nitric oxide (NO) was Fe2O3 > MgO > CaO > Al2O3 > Na2CO3 > K2CO3 > SiO2. In addition, the increased concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and CO2 could promote the reduction of NO2, while the low content of CO2 only established a slight impact on NO2 reduction. However, the increase of oxygen (O2) concentration displayed an inhibition effect on NO2 reduction to a certain extent. The variation of atmosphere in oxy-fuel combustion generated a substantial influence on the creation and reduction of NO2. The char prepared in lower temperature exhibited a higher promotion effect on the consumption of NO2. Higher contents of fixed carbon and basic oxides had more obvious stimulation effects on NO2 reduction. Fixed carbon had a superior activity in NO2 reduction than ash. The kinetic analysis indicated that high content of CO and the presence of char could reduce the apparent activation energy of NO2 reduction. The present study can be helpful to improve the understanding of NO2 chemistry in oxy-fuel combustion.

Abstract:Unlike hydrocarbon fuel, ammonia is a carbon-free and renewable energy source. It is also regarded as one of the potential energy carriers. However, ammonia combustion for power generation is not well studied under microscale conditions, especially concerning nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission. For this, thermal performances and NO emission characteristics of premixed ammonia/oxygen combustion are numerically investigated on a microplanar combustor. The effects of 1) the equivalence ratio phi, 2) inlet temperature T-in and 3) inlet pressure P-in are examined. The outer wall mean temperature (OWMT) is found to vary non-monotonically, as the mixture varies from lean to rich conditions, with the peak occurring at phi = 0.9 mainly due to the optimal heat transfer performance. However, a low phi could lead to the high nitric oxides (NO) concentrations because of the high flame temperature as well as phi atom concentrations. Up to 75.5% of NO reduction could be achieved, as is optimized. Furthermore, increasing T-in is shown to be associated with a low OWMT and NO concentration. In addition, varying P-in is shown to lead to not only OWMT being changed but also NO formation being mitigated. The decrease in NO concentration for a high P-in is mostly attributable to the short residence time of a high flame temperature in the channel and low OH concentrations. This work reveals that optimizing the operating thermodynamic parameters is an effective means to reduce NO emissions and to improve thermal performances.
Towards A Kinetic Understanding of the Nox Promoting-Effect on Ignition of Coalbed Methane: A Case Study of Methane/Nitrogen Dioxide Mixtures

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is an important impurity in coal-bed methane (CBM) and a dominant component of NOx pollution in practical engines. Its promoting effect on methane ignition has been studied in the current experimental and kinetic study. Ignition delay times of NO2/CH4/O-2/Ar mixtures, with blending ratios of NO2:CH4 of 30:70, 50:50 and 70:30 for stoichiometric methane mixtures were measured in a shock tube. Experiments cover a range of pressures (1.2-10.0 atm) and temperatures (933-1961 K). Under all tested pressures, NO2 addition promotes the reactivity of methane and reduces the global activation energy at all pressures, and these effects are most significant for the mixtures with highest NO2 concentrations, at the highest pressures and at the lowest temperatures. To simulate the experimental measurements, five literature NOx sub-mechanisms were integrated with AramcoMech 1.3. The simulations demonstrate that, for the mixtures with low levels of NOx concentrations, the five models agree well with the experimental ignition delay times. For the mixtures with high NOx content, however, all five models are unable to reproduce the measured data, and the level of disagreement increases with increasing NO2 concentration. An updated mechanism is proposed, based on modifications made as a result of sensitivity and reaction flux analyses performed to quantitatively determine the chemical reasons for NO2 promoting methane ignition. The results indicate that, NO2 addition perturbs the branching ratio of key reaction pathways by affecting the structure of the free radical pool at the initial ignition stage of methane oxidation. A new reaction cycle via the following sequence of reactions (C) over dotH(3) + NO2 double left right arrow CH3(O) over dot + NO, CH3(O) over dot + M double left right arrow CH2O + (H) over dot + M, NO2 + (H) over dot double left right arrow NO + (O) over dotH, and CH4 + (O) over dotOH double left right arrow (C) over dotH(3) + H2O is proposed to explain the observed effect of NO2 addition on the promotion of methane ignition. Abstract:Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) has been widely equipped in modern engines for pollutant emission abatement. NOx present in EGR can greatly influence fuel combustion properties in engine operation. Ethylene (C2H4) is well-known a critical intermediate formed via beta-scission reactions of alkyl radicals in the pyrolysis and oxidation of hydrocarbons, thus investigating the mutual effects of C2H4 and NOx is beneficial to engine design as well as hierarchically developed strategy of the chemical kinetic model. This study investigated the auto-ignition behavior of C2H4/air mixtures containing different levels of NO2 (0 ppm, 200 ppm, 500 ppm, 3000 ppm) in a high-pressure shock tube at pressures of 1 atm and 24 atm, temperatures of 820-1300 K and different equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0. The results showed that the addition of NO2 significantly promoted auto-ignition at high pressure, while only limited effects at low pressure. A detailed kinetic mechanism was proposed based on a hierarchically developed strategy, and it successfully reproduced the experimental data over the entire test conditions. Flux and sensitivity analyses were implemented to explore the sensitization effect of NO2 addition on the ignition kinetics of C2H4. The analysis revealed that NO2 mainly affects the reaction pathway of CH2CHO radical, lead-ing to the formation of HONO. The additional generation of OH radicals through HONO = NO + OH and NO + H O-2 = NO2 + OH accelerate the auto-ignition of C2H4. Detailed investigation of NO mechanism in non-premixed oxy-fuel jet flames with CH 4 /H 2 fuel blends

Abstract:This study systematically investigates the detailed mechanism of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in CH4 and CH4/H2 jet flames with O2/CO2 hot coflow. After comprehensive validation of the modeling by experiments of Dally et al. [Proc. Combust. Inst. 29 (2002) 1147–1154]; the effects of CO2 replacement of N2, mass fraction of oxygen in the coflow (YO2), and mass fraction of hydrogen in the fuel jet (YH2) on NO formation and destruction are investigated in detail. For methane oxy-fuel combustion, the NNH route is found to control the NO formation at YO2 ≤ 3%, while both NNH and N2O-intermediate routes dominate the NO production at 3% < YO2 < 10%. When YO2 ≥ 10%, NO is obtained mainly from thermal mechanism. Moreover, in the oxy-combustion of methane and hydrogen fuel blends with YO2 = 3%, with hydrogen addition the contribution of the NNH and prompt routes increases, while that of the N2O-intermediate route decreases. Furthermore, the chemical effect of CO2 is significant in reducing NO in both oxy-combustion of methane with YO2 ≤ 3% and combustion of methane and hydrogen fuel blends with YH2 ≤ 10%.
