Abstract:In the face of climate change, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy sources is crucial. Ammonia, as a carbon-free and renewable fuel, exhibits significant potential as an alternative energy source. By incorporating hydrogen as an additive, its flammability can be improved to meet the requirements of existing spark ignition engines. However, comprehending the characteristics of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions resulting from the combustion of ammonia-hydrogen fuel blends poses challenges due to the contribution of both fuel NOx and thermal NOx. Therefore, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the fuel NOx behavior during ammonia-hydrogen combustion is of great importance. This paper focuses on investigating fuel NOx exclusively by utilizing an argon-oxygen atmosphere, which eliminates nitrogen from the oxidizer and its role in thermal NOx formation. The study conducts a fundamental investigation into the formation and evolution characteristics of fuel NOx during ammonia-hydrogen combustion under engine-like conditions. The findings indicate that fuel NOx acts as intermediate products, potentially originating from chemical equilibrium calculations. While fuel NO predominantly forms in the burning zone, it undergoes reduction in the burned zone, despite being the primary NOx species. N2O, absent in thermal NOx mechanisms, exhibits significant concentrations within the burning zone and is mostly converted to N-2, resulting in limited N2O concentration in the ultimate NOx concentration. Lean burn conditions, hydrogen addition, and oxyfuel combustion all promote fuel NOx formation. Furthermore, the equivalence ratio influences the structure of the ammonia-hydrogen premixed flame due to the de-NOx effect of ammonia. Collectively, these findings highlight that fuel NOx mechanisms differ from thermal NOx mechanisms, necessitating distinct NOx reduction technologies to achieve low-NOx-emission spark ignition engines.

Abstract:A theoretical investigation on a kinetic mechanism of nitrous oxide formation in flames with different fuels was carried out for purposes of minimizing the total NOx yield. The effect of fuel type and combustion condition on N2O emission is discussed. It is found that N2O constitutes a relatively small fraction of the total NOx formation, but it is of great importance to both NO formation and NO reduction from fuel nitrogen (Nf) and molecular nitrogen (N2).

Abstract:In this work, effects of air and oxy-fuel atmospheres on flamelet modeling of NOx and SOx formation in two-dimensional laminar counterflow pulverized coal flames are investigated. The release and combustion of volatile-N, char-N and volatile-S are incorporated in the flamelet model, and a newly developed reaction mechanism for oxy-fuel combustion (129 species and 911 elementary reactions) is employed to describe the chemistry. Two different methods for prediction of pollutant species are evaluated using the flamelet model, in which the pollutant mass fractions are obtained by either extracting the flamelet library directly ("M1") or solving the corresponding transport equations with the reaction source terms being taken from the flamelet library ("M2"). To evaluate the performance of proposed flamelet models, the flamelet predictions are compared to the reference results of the detailed chemistry solutions, in which the transport equations for the species mass fractions and total enthalpy are directly solved. At first, the atmosphere effects on the NOx and SOx formation are analyzed based on the detailed chemistry solutions, then the effects of atmosphere on flamelet modeling of pollutant formation are evaluated. The results show that M1 overall performs better than M2 at predicting the NOx and SOx species in both air and oxy-fuel atmospheres. The major pollutant species of NO and SO2 are over-predicted by M2 in certain regions for both atmospheres, and the reason for the incorrect prediction is explored by attributing to the interpolation error of the reaction source terms in the middle branch of the S-Shaped curve.
Quantitative Analyses of No Formations from Different Reaction Pathways in Methane-Air Combustion at Various Pressures and Temperatures

Abstract:Numerical calculations of the laminar counterflow diffusion flames of methane-air are conducted to quantitatively study NO formations from different reaction pathways (mechanisms) at various pressures and/or initial air temperatures. A modified method, which deactivates the initiating reactions in a specific reaction pathway only for NO production while maintaining interactions with other pathways, is developed to calculate NO formation in each mechanism. Results indicate that in the thermal, prompt, N2O, and NNH reaction mechanisms, the NO production rate largely increases as the pressure or the initial air temperature increases, and in particular, as these two parameters are increased together as in a practical combustion system. In the thermal pathway, as the pressure is increased to 15 atm, NO is produced almost entirely on the fuel-lean side. In the prompt pathway, NO production generally occurs in regions with the progress variable ranging from 0.8 to 0.95; the maximum NO production rate moves from the fuel-rich towards the stoichiometric region as the pressure is increased. NO formation from the N2O or NNH mechanism occurs mainly at high pressures, but the corresponding production rate is an order of magnitude smaller than that from the thermal or prompt mechanism, respectively. In all the reaction mechanisms, NO consumption occurs through the reburn mechanism on the fuel-rich side, and the consumption rate significantly increases as the pressure and initial air temperature increase. Results herein provide a quantitative understanding of the effects of pressure and temperature on NO formations from different reaction mechanisms.
Formation and Evolution of Thermal and Fuel Nitrogen Oxides in the Turbulent Combustion Field of Ammonia Internal Combustion Engines

Abstract:Ammonia is a zero-carbon candidate fuel for the decarbonization of internal combustion (IC) engines. A concern when using ammonia in IC engines is the increased emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX), due to the additional nitrogen in the ammonia molecule. Compared to conventional petroleum such as gasoline and diesel, ammonia combustion adds the fuel NOX formation mechanism in addition to the original thermal NOX generation pathway, which further complicates the NOX emission characteristics of ammonia engines. Decoupling fuel NOX and thermal NOX helps to increase the understanding of the formation and evolutionary characteristics of nitrogen oxides occurring inside ammonia engines, but the available literature lacks studies in this respect. The purpose of this study is to fill this research gap and to propose a methodology for decoupling fuel NOX and thermal NOX. In brief, an artificial elemental nitrogen is applied to the Zeldovich mechanism and to the diatomic nitrogen in the combustion air, which allows the formation of NOX from the elemental nitrogen in the ammonia fuel to be separated from the NOX formed from the nitrogen in the air. A three dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach and investigates the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of thermal NOX and fuel NOX in the turbulent combustion field of ammonia engines. The in-cylinder activity analysis suggests that this separation of the NOX formation mechanism slightly alters the nitrogen-based chemistry, which is unavoidable. However, this approach still allows a reasonable characterization of the formation and evolution of fuel NOX and thermal NOX. The simulations show that fuel NOX is formed during ammonia oxidation because fuel NOX is an intermediate species, while thermal NOX has a high concentration in the burned zone because it is related to the temperature and the residence time of nitrogen at that temperature, both of which are expected and support the successful decoupling of fuel and atmospheric nitrogen. In addition, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions come from the fuel NOX mechanism and are mainly distributed along the liner walls as it is formed by partial oxidation of ammonia released from the crevices during the late oxidation process. Moreover, the concentrations of both thermal and fuel-based nitrogen monoxide vary with the chemical equilibrium that changes with piston motion, and their concentrations are always comparable. As a result, combustion strategies for ammonia internal combustion engines needs to consider both thermal and fuel NOX reduction mechanisms, where the main difficulty is the N2O reduction. Catalytic combustion mode may be a viable strategy to improve the oxidation efficiency of the ammonia fuel trapped in the crevice and reduce N2O emissions in the cylinder.

Abstract:Ammonia has been considered as a novel fuel for decarbonization purposes. However, emissions from combustion systems are still posing a problem. Therefore, experimental and numerical simulations have been conducted to study the concentration of exhaust emissions (Nitric oxide "NO", Nitrous oxide "N 2 O") from burning the ammonia/hydrogen (NH 3 /H 2 ) blend 85/15 (vol%). The effects were measured at various thermal powers ranging 10 to 20 kW and with different Reynolds numbers from 20,000—40,000. The experimental points were numerically investigated in the Ansys CHEMKIN-Pro environment employing seven chemical kinetic mechanisms taken from the literature. All experiments have been undertaken at standard atmospheric conditions. The experimental results showed that both NO and N 2 O gradually increased when the Reynolds number increased from 20,000 to 40,000. Along with that, the concentration of NO emissions at the exhaust reported minimum level when the Re = 20,000 due to lower reactivity radical formation, all that led to a deterioration of the flame characteristics. Also, the integrated radical intensities of NO*, OH*, NH*, and NH 2 * demonstrate an increasing trend as Re increased from 20,000 to 40,000. In terms of thermal power, N 2 O suffered an abrupt decrease when the thermal power increased up to 15 kW, while the opposite occurs for NO. In addition, the radicals intensity of OH*, NH*and NH 2 * figures show an increase in their concentration when the thermal power increased up to 15 kW then decreased with increasing thermal intensity to reach 20 kW, reflecting into increased NO productions and decreased N 2 O levels. The numerical analysis showed that Stagni, Bertolino, and Bowen Mei were the most accurate mechanisms as these give a good prediction for NO and N 2 O. The study also showed that the chemical reaction (HNO + O 2 ↔ NO + HO 2 ) is the main source of NO formation. While the chemical reaction (NH + NO ↔ N 2 O + H) is responsible for the formation of N 2 O by consuming NO and when there will be abundance in NH radicals. Finally, dealing with a blended fuel of high ammonia concentration encourages ammonia chemistry to become more dominant in the flame. It decreases the flame temperature, hence lowering heat loss between the flame and the surrounding.
A Kinetic Evaluation on NO2 Formation in the Post-Flame Region of Pressurized Oxy-Combustion Process

Abstract:Pressurized oxy-combustion is a promising technology that can significantly re-duce the energy penalty associated with first generation oxy-combustion for CO2 capture in coal-fired power plants. However, higher pressure enhances the production of strong acid gases, including NO2 and SO3, aggravating the corrosion threat during flue gas re-circulation. In the flame region, high temperature NOx exists mainly as NO, while conversion from NO to NO2 happened in post-flame region. In this study, the conversion of NO ? NO2 has been kinetically evaluated under representative post-flame conditions of pressurized oxy-combustion after validating the mechanism (80 species and 464 reactions), which includes nitrogen and sulfur chemistry based on GRI-MECH 3.0. The effects of residence time, temperature, pressure, major species (O2/H2O), and minor or trace species (CO/SOx) on NO2 formation are studied. The calculation results show that when pressure is increased from 1 to 15 bar, NO2 is increased from 1 to 60 ppm, and the acid dew point increases by over 80?C. Higher pressure and temperature greatly reduce the time required to reach equilibrium. With increasing pressure and decreasing temperature, O plays a much more important role than HO2 in the oxidation of NO. A higher water vapor content accelerates NO2 formation in all cases by providing more O and HO2 radicals. The addition of CO or SO2 also promotes the formation of NO2. The NO2 formation in a pressurized oxy-combustion furnace can be over 10 times that of an atmospheric air-combustion furnace.

Abstract:Burning hydrogen-rich syngas fuels derived from various sources in combustion equipment is an effective pathway to enhance energy security and of significant practical implications. Emissions from the combustion of hydrogen-rich fuels have been a main concern in both academia and industry. In this study, the NO and CO emission characteristics of both laminar and turbulent counterflow premixed hydrogen-rich syngas/air flames were experimentally and numerically studied. The results showed that for both laminar and turbulent counterflow premixed flames, the peak NO mole fraction increased as the equivalence ratio increased from 0.6 to 1.0 and decreased as the strain rate increased. Compared with the laminar flames at the same bulk flow velocity, turbulent flames demonstrated a lower peak NO mole fraction but broader NO formation region. Using the analogy theorem, a one-dimensional turbulent counterflow flame model was established, and the numerical results indicated that the small-scale turbulence-induced heat and mass transport enhancements significantly affected NO emission. Considering NO formation at the same level of fuel consumption, the NO formation of the turbulent flame was significantly lower than that of the laminar flame at the same level of fuel consumption, implying that the turbulence-induced heat and mass transfer enhancement favored NOx suppression.

Abstract:Concentrations of N2O, NOx, CO2, and O2 were determined along the axis of coal, oil. and gas flames in a 3 MW experimental furnace, for both single-stage and two-stage combustion conditions. Concentrations of NOx and N2O were found to be strongly correlated along the flames and in the flue gas samples, with approximately one mole of N20 produced for every three moles of NOx. The results suggested that most of the NOx and N2O arose from oxidation of fuel nitrogen, with highest concentrations observed in coal flames and lowest levels in the natural gas flame. Approximately 12 percent of fuel nitrogen was converted to N2O in coal and oil flames. Two-stage combustion, which produces a fuel-rich zone near the burner, substantially lowered emissions of both NOx and N2O in the experimental flames. In most cases the rates of decline were similar for the two gases, suggesting that related processes could account for the reduction of these nitrogen oxides in fuel-rich flames. Staged combustion is seen as an effective method for controlling both N2O and NOx emissions.

Abstract:The formation of soot and NOx in ammonia/ethylene flames with varying ammonia ratios was investigated through experimental and numerical analysis. The spatial distribution of the soot volume fraction and NOx concentrations along the flame central line were measured, and the mechanism of soot and NOx formation during ammonia/ethylene co-combustion was analyzed using CHEMKIN 17.0. The experimental results indicated that the soot volume fraction decreases with an increase in ammonia ratio, with the soot peak concentration occurring in the upper region of the flame. The distribution of NOx is complex. In the initial part of the flame, a higher concentration of NOx is generated, and the lower the ammonia ratio, the higher the concentration of NOx. As the combustion process progresses, the concentration of NOx initially decreases and then subsequently increases rapidly, with higher ammonia ratios leading to higher concentrations of NOx. The addition of ammonia results in a decrease in CH3, C2H2, and C3H3, and an increase in CN concentration. This leads to a transformation of carbon atoms within the combustion system, reducing the available carbon for soot formation and suppressing its generation. A higher ammonia ratio increases the likelihood that NH3 will be oxidized to N2, as well as increasing the probability that any generated NO will undergo reduction to N2 through the action of the free radicals NH2 and NH.

Abstract:Co-firing ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen (H2) or H2-rich fuel and partially cracking NH3 are promising non-carbon combustion techniques for gas turbines and marine engines, raising a growing need to understand the interactions of H2 and nitric oxide (NO) as well as the non-hydrocarbon nitrogen oxides (NOX) reduction mechanism under flame conditions. In this work, the outwardly propagating spherical flame method was used to investigate the laminar flame propagation of H2/NO and H2/NO/nitrogen (N2) mixtures at initial pressure (Pu) of 2 atm, initial temperature (Tu) of 298 K and equivalence ratios of 0.2-1.4. The laminar burning velocities (LBVs) of H2/NO mixtures are generally 5-10 times lower than those of H2/air mixtures, while the dilution of N2 can dramatically inhibit the laminar flame propagation. A kinetic model of H2/NO combustion was constructed and validated against the new data in this work and other types of experimental data in literature. The modeling analyses reveal that NO+H=N+OH becomes the most important chain-branching reaction in H2/NO reaction system, while the LBV data of H2/NO mixtures in this work can provide highly sensitive validation targets for the kinetics in H2 and NO interactions. Furthermore, the NO reduction to N2 mainly proceeds through NO+N=N2+O under various H2/NO ratios, and NO+O=N+O2 is found to have a significant contribution to NO reduction under NO-rich conditions.

Abstract:Taking CH_4 and LPG(liquefied petroleum gas) flames as the objects of study,NO_x emission properties of flames,with different premixing proportions,were experimentally investigated under various environmental temperature conditions.Test results show that there exists a critical environmental temperature for each of the two flames,below which,NO_x formation,varying with premixing rate,according its genetic mechanism,may be divided into 3 stages: at first prompt NO_x plays the primary role,then prompt NO_x appears mixed with thermal NO_x,finally thermal NO_x prevails;while above the critical temperature,thermal NO_x formation prevails all the way.Research also shows that,within a certain temperature range,with full diffusion or low premixing conditions,the relationship between NO_x emission and environmental temperature is basically a quadratic function,whereas under full or high premixing conditions,NO_x emission hardly exhibits any change with environmental temperature variation.

Abstract:An experimental and kinetic modeling study is reported on three premixed nitroethane/oxygen/argon flames at low pressure (4.655 kPa) with the equivalence ratios (Φ) of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. Over 30 flame species were identified with tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry, with their mole fractions quantified as the function of the height above burner. The flame temperature profiles were measured with a Pt–6%Rh/Pt–30%Rh thermocouple. A detailed kinetic mechanism with 115 species and 730 reactions was proposed and validated against experimental results. The computed predictions have shown satisfactory agreement with the experimental results. Basing on the rate-of-production analysis, the reaction pathways that feature the combustion of nitroethane were revealed, including the primary decomposition of C–N bond fission, the oxidation of C2 and C1 hydrocarbons and the formation of nitrogenous species. The presence of NO2 and NO has been proved to be important for these processes.

Abstract:The total emissions (EICO, EINOx, EINO2 and NO2/NOx ratio) of laminar premixed biogas-hydrogen impinging flame were obtained experimentally while a computational model was developed to calculate the impinging flame. The NO amount produced via different routes (thermal, prompt, NNH and N2O routes) were isolated and calculated in the simulation. The effects of separated distance and equivalence ratio on the emission formation were discussed quantitatively. The results are summarized as follows. The lower values of EICO at small and large H are caused by the weakened fuel oxidization and improved CO oxidization, respectively, and the EICO is increased with phi owing to the increasingly incomplete fuel oxidization. The NO amounts of thermal, prompt, NNH and N2O routes and their contributions on total NO are affected considerably by the separated distance. The decreased prompt NO with H leads to the initial drop of EINOx at fuel-rich condition. The thermal NO and NNH route dominate the NO formation at phi = 0.8 and 1.0, while the contribution of prompt NO is improved significantly at fuel -rich condition. The rising trend of EINOx with phi is primarily predominated by the enhanced prompt NO. As H is enhanced, the rising and dropping trends of EINO2, as well as NO2/NOx ratio, are caused by more intensive air entrainment, promoting the NO2 formation, and the extended high temperature region, accelerating the NO formation and the NO2 destruction, respectively. The enhanced EINO2 with phi is primarily caused by the increased H atom in the air mixing region to promote the HO2 formation. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Effects of Different Air Diluents on Nox Formation in Counterflow Syngas Diffusion Flames

Abstract:Based on NO_x formation mechanism in syngas combustion,taking the simple-structured counterflow flame as the object of study,the effects of different diluents on flame characteristics,free radical concentration and NO_x formation were investigated by using models of detail chemical-kinetic mechanism.Results show that,in reducing NO_x emission,CO_2 appears to be most effective,followed by H_2O,and then N_2.NO_x emission can effectively be reduced by diluting the air with a small amount of CO_2 or H_2O.Existance of CH_4 in syngas has little influence on diluents in reducing NO_x emission,but reduces the flame temperature and thermal NO formation,and promotes prompt NO formation.The flame temperature and NO formation can be reduced by increasing the flame strain rate.Therefore,CO_2 and H_2O diluting air can effectively inhibit NO_x formation.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanism of NOx formation and destruction is a prerequisite for the development of effective NOx mitigation techniques in ammonia flames. Laboratory-scale laminar ammonia (NH3) flames are well suited for such fundamental kinetic studies as the complex interaction between chemistry and fluid flow can be largely decoupled. However, quantitative and spatially resolved NO/N2O concentration data in canonical laminar ammonia flames are surprisingly scarce. Such data is, on the other hand, crucial for developing and validating kinetic models for NH3 combustion. In this regard, we developed a novel NO/N2O measurement method combining microprobe sampling and calibration-free mid-infrared laser absorption spectroscopy and realized spatially-resolved detection with high accuracy and large dynamic ratio. The fidelity of the method has been rigorously tested before being applied to perform a comprehensive parametric study on NO and N2O formation in NH3-CH4 co-fired burner-stabilized premixed flames. The effects of NH3 fuel ratio, equivalence ratio and flame temperature on NO/N2O formation have been experimentally determined. Corresponding numerical modelling was also performed using literature-based mechanisms to provide kinetic insights into the experimental observations. It is found that existing mechanisms generally have satisfactory predictions in fuel-lean flames; however, under fuel-rich conditions, these mechanisms overpredict NO formation but underestimate its destruction, leading to significant over-prediction. Such discrepancies were further investigated through sensitivity and reaction pathway analysis. The present study not only provides extensive spatially-resolved NO/N2O data in ammonia flames that are urgently needed for the development and validation of NH3 combustion mechanisms, the comparison between neat CH4 and NH3-cofired flames also points to the fact that traditional NOx mitigation techniques that are popular in combustion of hydrocarbon fuels may not be appropriate in NH3 flames. Perhaps most interestingly, the present experimental results show an oxygen-enriched oxidizer can in some cases reduce NO emission from NH3 flames.

Abstract:The nitric oxide (NO) formation in methane (CH4) flames has been widely investigated, with quite a few kinetic mechanisms available in the literature. However, studies have shown that there are often discrepancies between the simulations using various mechanisms and the experimental results. To elucidate reactions leading to these discrepancies, experiments were designed to measure the NO formation in the post flame zone of CH4+O2+N2 flames with the oxygen ratio, x O 2 = O2/(O2+N2), varying from 0.2 to 0.27. The experiments were carried out on a heat flux burner at atmospheric pressure and 298 K using saturated Laser-induced fluorescence. The equivalence ratio, ϕ, was changed from 0.7 to 1.6. The corresponding laminar burning velocity, SL , for each condition was also measured using the heat flux method. A comparison was made for the present experimental data and simulation results using the Konnov, Glarborg, NOMecha 2.0, and San Diego mechanisms, and none of them well reproduced the new NO experimental data for all investigated conditions. Numerical analyses show that the increment of NO mole fraction in stoichiometric and fuel-lean flames when the x O 2 increases is mostly defined by the thermal-NO production, which is found to be over-predicted, especially by the Konnov and San Diego mechanisms. The rate constant of reaction NO+N = N2+O was derived as k = 1.529 × 10 13 T − 0.0027 exp ( 185.41 [ c a l / m o l e ] R T ) cm3 / mol s over 225–2400 K temperature range. The rate constants of four reactions controlling CH mole fraction profiles and prompt-NO formation were updated based on the analysis of the literature data that yields an improved performance of the Konnov mechanism.
