Abstract:The research on modeling of distillation processes is over 30 years. The equilibrium-stage-based model is widely adopted to describe the distillation process because of its simpleness and convenience. There are many solution methods for these distillation models, however, for different distillation systems, especially for complex multi-component distillation, these methods have different applicable occasions. The selection of solution methods is therefore a very important issue in this research field. We model a multi-component distillation column which has 36 stages and more than 300 components involved. Three solution methods for the distillation model are investigated to demonstrate some guidelines in method selection.

Abstract:The single-component Mollerup model, with over 40 direct applications and 442 citations, is the most widely used activity model for chromatographic mechanistic modeling. Many researchers have extended this formula to multi-component systems by directly adding subscripts, a modification deemed thermodynamically inconsistent (referred to as the reference model). In this work, we rederived the asymmetric activity model for multi-component systems, using the van der Waals equation of state, and termed it the multi-component Mollerup model. In contrast to the reference model, our proposed model accounts for the contributions of all components to the activity. Three numerical experiments were performed to investigate the impact of the three different activity models on the chromatographic modeling. The results indicate that our proposed model represents a thermodynamically consistent generalization of the single-component Mollerup model to multi-component systems. This communication advocates adopting of the multi-component Mollerup model for activity modeling in multi-component chromatographic separation to enhance thermodynamic consistency.

Abstract:A set of molecular models for 78 pure substances from prior work is taken as a basis for systematically studying vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) in ternary <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://systems.All" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> 33 ternary mixtures of these 78 components for which experimental VLE data is available are studied by molecular simulation. Abstract:This paper reviews several classical vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE)mixing rules based on excess free energy models proposed by different authors in recent years. These kinds of mixing rules combine the advantages owned partially by equations of state and activity coefficient models for liquids to obtain the better extrapolation at high temperatures and pressures and to enable an accurate description of the composition of supercirtical and subcritical components for the VLE prediction. Three typies of mixing rules, including Huron-Vidal-type (HV-type), Wong-Sandler-type (WS-type) and Twu-Coon-type (TC-type) ,are developed in sequence. The results in the existing literatures show that the accuracy of VLE prediction of TC-type mixing rule is slightly superior to that of HV-type and WS-type mixing rules, while the accuracy of VLE prediction of HV-type mixing rule is approximately as good as that of WS-type mixing rule. These mixing rules should be tested by the VLE and liquid-liquid equilibrium of ternary and multi-component mixture systems for the future. In addition, it is a promising field to extend excess energy mixing rules to the multi-parameter equations of state for improving accuracy of the equilibrium prediction.

Abstract:In this work, the polar perturbation chain statistical associated fluid theory (PC-SAFT) was utilized to determine model parameters of HFOs pure working fluid. Subsequently, a predictive equation for the binary interaction parameters of mixtures containing HFOs was constructed, allowing for the prediction of the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) and pressure-volume-temperature-composition ( pvTx ) properties of mixtures comprising of HFOs, HFCs, HCs, and CO 2 . For 9 pure working fluids of HFOs, the average deviations of the polar PC-SAFT model in calculating saturated vapor pressure, saturated liquid phase density, and saturated vapor phase density were 1.2%, 0.7%, and 0.9%, respectively. For the VLE properties of 35 binary mixtures containing HFOs, the average absolute relative deviation of pressure (AARD( p )) and average absolute deviation of vapor phase compositions (AAD( y )) predicted by the polar PC-SAFT were 2.4% and 0.008, respectively. When directly using the parameters of binary subsystems to predict the VLE properties of ternary mixtures by the polar PC-SAFT model, the predicted AARD( p ) and AAD( y ) were 2.2% and 0.011 for 8 ternary mixtures containing HFOs. For the pvTx properties, the predicted average absolute relative deviation of density (AARD( ρ )) was 0.9% for 12 liquid binary mixtures containing HFOs, and the AARD( ρ ) was 1.3% for 16 vapor binary mixtures containing HFOs. The model established in this work has good predictive effects on the VLE and pvTx properties of binary mixtures containing HFOs, and can also be extended to multicomponent mixtures.

Abstract:Evaporation is a key process in a wide range of industrial applications. To gain a better insight into this process, investigation on the evaporation model is an important aspect. In the present study, it is found that the computation with the Hertz-Knudsen-Schrage model is not easy to converge in the numerical simulation of the evaporation with multicomponent gas. The reason for the divergence is that the Hertz-Knudsen-Schrage model will lead to an improper vapor mass fraction which is much larger than the saturated vapor mass fraction in the iterations. To improve the convergence performance, an improved model for evaporation with multicomponent gas is proposed. In the improved evaporation model, when the predicted vapor density is larger than the saturated vapor density, a strategy that calculates the volumetric mass transfer rate with the difference between the saturated vapor density and the current vapor density will be implemented. As a result, the vapor density is bounded by the saturated values and no improper large vapor mass fraction arises in the iterations. The improved evaporation model shows much better convergence performance. In the case of the present study, the improved evaporation model can converge with the time step of 5×10 −6 s, while the original Hertz-Knudsen-Schrage model cannot converge with the time step of 5×10 −9 s. The improved evaporation model is also compared with the empirical correlations and shows a good agreement.

Abstract:The mathematic models used to predict evaporation rate of mono-component liquid were compared with each other.According to boundary layer theory of laminar flow and molecule diffusion theory,an evaporation mathematic model was developed.Evaporation experiments were done in wind tunnel.Experiment results were compared with the predicted results of the mathematic evaporation model and some other common used evaporation models.The results indicated that the deviation between predicted value of the mathematics model and experiment results is 33.5%,and the prediction precision is lower than those of Mackay & Matsugu model,NIOH-1model and SUBTEC model.With low wind speed,the prediction precision of the mathematic model increases as wind speed increases.And the prediction precision of the mathematic model also increases as volatility of evaporation liquid decreases.

Understanding the language of molecules: Predicting pure component parameters for the PC-SAFT equation of state from SMILES

Abstract:A major bottleneck in developing sustainable processes and materials is a lack of property data. Recently, machine learning approaches have vastly improved previous methods for predicting molecular properties. However, these machine learning models are often not able to handle thermodynamic constraints adequately. In this work, we present a machine learning model based on natural language processing to predict pure-component parameters for the perturbed-chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) equation of state. The model is based on our previously proposed SMILES-to-Properties-Transformer (SPT). By incorporating PC-SAFT into the neural network architecture, the machine learning model is trained directly on experimental vapor pressure and liquid density data. Combining established physical modeling approaches with state-of-the-art machine learning methods enables high-accuracy predictions across a wide range of pressures and temperatures, while maintaining the physical meaning of PC-SAFT parameters. SPT-PCSAFT demonstrates exceptional prediction accuracy even for complex molecules with various functional groups, outperforming traditional group contribution methods by a factor of four in the mean average percentage deviation. Moreover, SPT-PCSAFT captures the behavior of stereoisomers without any special consideration. To facilitate the application of our model, we provide predicted PC-SAFT parameters of more than 13645 components, making PC-SAFT accessible to all researchers.

Correlation and Prediction of Thermodynamic Properties of Nonaqueous Electrolytes by the Modified TCPC Model

Abstract:In this work, the modified three-characteristic-parameter correlation model was introduced to correlate and predict the thermodynamic properties, such as the mean activity coefficient, the osmotic coefficient, and the solvent activity, of different kinds of nonaqueous electrolyte solutions. Two sets of parameters, (b, S) and (b, S, n), for 46 single salts in. methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol, etc., were regressed from literature data at 298.15 K. Results of standard deviations showed the good applicability of our model. The calculated results of the mean activity coefficient by our model and the Pitzer model have been compared with each other with good agreement. Smoothed experimental data of osmotic coefficients and solvent activities were calculated with the present model with three or two parameters, and the one with three parameters showed a better performance. We also extended this model for some nonaqueous systems at elevated temperatures, and we also found good consistency between the results calculated from our model and experimental data. Moreover, we further developed this model for calculating those in the mixed-solvent electrolyte systems. The results showed our modified model could adequately describe these complicated electrolyte solutions.

Abstract:Toxic vapor evaporated from released toxic liquid can cause people poisoning and environmental pollution.It is important for predicting toxic vapor concentration in air to forecast evaporation rate of toxic liquid.Especially for multi-component liquid,the evaporation process is complex,and evaporation rate is predicted by experimental model or semi-experimental model.And the influence of thermal transitivity is hardly considered.The model of predicting evaporation mass and temperature of two-component liquid was developed.The wind tunnel experiment device was designed.The solution composed of benzene and ethanol,which at different volume ratio,was placed in wind tunnel to make experiments.The measured value was compared with the predicted value.The result indicates that the predicted evaporation mass and temperature of solution are equivalent to the measured ones,and the average error is 25.82% and 33.79% respectively,thus providing the basis to research evaporation process of multi-component liquid.

Abstract:On the basis of the concept of local composition, a new model is proposed for correlating the Raman frequency shifts of a C-H stretching band over the whole concentration with only one energy parameter. Mixtures investigated include water + acetone, water + 2-propanol, water + N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), water + methanol, water + ethanol, water + 1,4-dioxane, water + dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and water + acetonitrile systems. The vapor-liquid equilibrium data were predicted by the parameter obtained from the spectra and one activity coefficient at infinite dilution. In this way, the spectroscopic information can be,related to thermodynamic properties.

Abstract:A new excess free energy mixing rule that employs a low-pressure reference state is proposed in this work. This new low-pressure mixing rule (LPMR), coupled with the original UNIFAC method and the Soave-Redlich-Kwong (SRK) equation of state (EoS), leads to an improved EoS/G(E) predictive model (LPMR-SRK model) that was applied to the high-pressure vapor-liquid phase equilibria of various systems including symmetric and asymmetric systems of n-alkanes with different gases (C2H6, C3H8, CO2, H-2) and polar systems. The results are compared with those of other EoS/G(E) predictive models, Such as the predictive Soave-Redlich-Kwong (PSRK), Chen-modified PSRK (MPSRK), volume-translated Peng-Robinson group contribution equation of state (VTPR), and linear combination of the Vidal and Michelsen rules (LCVM) models. It is demonstrated that LPMR-SRK method gives similar accuracy as the PSRK approach for symmetric or slightly asymmetric systems and gives better results than the MPSRK, VTPR, and LCVM models. For highly asymmetric nonpolar systems, the results indicate that the LPMR-SRK method has an accuracy similar to or slightly better than that of the MPSRK and VTPR models and gives a much better performance than the PSRK model. Furthermore, the LPMR-SRK approach is competitive with or better than the LCVM approach, except for sonic CO2/heavy alkane systems. In addition, although it is slightly inferior to the PSRK and LCVM approaches, the LPMR-SRK method can still provide satisfactory descriptions of polar systems that are more accurate than those of the MPSRK and VTPR models. Moreover, three ternary and one quaternary systems can also be predicted successfully by the LPMR-SRK method.

Abstract:Accurate prediction of both volumetric and vapor–liquid phase equilibria of binary CO2–H2O and CH4–H2O mixtures with a single equation of state proves to be difficult. In this study we use an activity–fugacity model to predict the vapor–liquid phase equilibria above 523K and adapt a Helmoholtz model to calculate volumetric properties of these two binary systems. The average deviations of water content in the vapor phase from experimental data are 3.25% and 3.19% for the CO2–H2O and CH4–H2O mixtures, respectively, and the average deviations of gas solubility in liquid phase from experimental data are 4.29% and 3.50%, respectively. The model can find wide applications, and an example is given for the analysis of fluid inclusions in geochemistry.

Abstract:Arguably, the most important of the basic thermodynamic properties of fluids, vapor pressure has been the focus of investigation for over a century. The two main drawbacks of the models currently used for its correlation are that they either exhibit large deviations near critical temperature and triple point or that they have a large number of compound-specific adjusted parameters and hence the inconvenient necessity of having at hand large tabulations of hundreds of model parameters. In this study, by employing the up and coming procedure of genetic programming, a new model, which to a large extent remedies these shortcomings, is proposed. Essentially, having only two compound-specific adjusted parameters and also using two readily available substance parameters of molecular weight and normal boiling point ensure a high level of convenience, yet precision and applicability over a large portion of the vapor–liquid coexistence curve. Concisely, a sizable database comprised of 58,272 data points was gathered for 243 organic and inorganic compounds and elements belonging to a diverse set of chemical families; these were then used in both developing and validating the proposed model and reporting generic and compound/element-specific adjusted parameters. Average absolute relative deviations (AARDs) of 1.47% (for a subset of 40,852 data points) and 1.82% (for a subset of 17,420 data points) for the general model and a slightly modified model applicable to hydrogen-bonded alcohols and phenols, respectively, are a testament to the reliability of the new proposed model.

Abstract:This study was devoted to develop the quantitative relationship model between the superheat limit temperature of binary mixtures and their molecular structures based on the quantitative structure-property relationship. The integral additive descriptors method was used to calculate the molecular descriptors of binary mixtures. The genetic algorithm combined with the multiple linear regression (GA-MLR) was used to select optimal subset of descriptors which had significant contribution to the superheat limit temperature. Three different external validations, which checked the stability and predictive capability of the obtained models, were employed to build the models. And the applicability domain for the models was also defined. The results showed the presented models were valid and predictive and there was strong linear relationship between the superheat limit temperature of binary mixtures and their molecular structures. This study can provide a new way to predict the superheat limit temperature of binary mixtures.

Abstract:CO2-based binary mixtures are considered good alternative working fluids in the refrigeration and power cycle due to their excellent performance and environmental friendliness. The vapor-liquid phase equilibrium of CO2-based binary mixtures is the basis for calculating mixing enthalpy and heat capacity, which is essential for thermodynamic analysis. In this work, based on the vdW mixing rules, we proposed a kij model (kij=θjki-θikj). In the proposed model, ki and kj are defined as pure interaction factors of the pure components, θj is the influence factor of component j to component i, and θi is the influence factor of component i to component j. After continuous fitting and trial calculation, we developed a semi-empirical formula, which is called a temperature-independent prediction model. The model does not have any adjustable parameters, which are only related to the physical properties (critical pressure (kPa), critical temperature (K), and acentric factor) and molecular structure (carbon-carbon double bonds, carbon-fluorine, chlorine, iodine, and oxygen atoms) of the components. The temperature-independent prediction model can predict the bubble-point pressures, vapor phase molar fractions, and relative volatilities very well, which is better than the prediction model based on the vdW mixing rules by others and the group contribution model based on the excess free energy (GE) mixing rules (PR+MHV1+UNIFAC). The total average absolute relative deviation of pressures, the total average absolute deviation of vapor phase molar fractions, and the total average absolute relative deviation of relative volatilities by the temperature-independent prediction model are 2.23%, 0.0095, and 5.21%, respectively.
