Abstract:We examined the flexodomains (FDs) in chiral bent-core nematics (BCNs), and demonstrated the morphology changed from parallel stripes in pure BCN to oblique ones in chiral BCNs. While the magnitude of obliqueness angle strongly depended on the concentration of chiral dopant, its sign was determined by the polarity of the driving voltage, thus FDs appeared alternately as symmetrical oblique stripes in the positive and negative half a.c. voltage cycles, respectively. Also the HTP value of chiral dopant in BCNs can be determined based on this phenomenon. The polarity-dependent behavior of FDs can be potentially exploited in photonic devices with a bistable function. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Thin films of Ag-TCNQ charge-transfer complex are prepared by the alternately vacuum depositing of Ag and TCNQ. The impedance transition of the films caused by the applied voltage is studied. An energy effect is found during the transition. When the applied voltage exceeds a threshold value, the energy consumption keeps unchanged. A possible explanation for the phenomenon is that the molecules in the thin films are reoriented.

Abstract:The structure and the electrical bistable properties of vacuum deposited thin films of Ag-TCNQ (7,7,8,8,-Tetracyanoquinodimethane) complex have been investigated. The characteristics of obtained films under different preparation conditions have been compared. The optical transmission spectra and the X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were conducted to analyze the structure and the thermal stability of the films. The atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to examine the morphology and grain size of the films. The corresponding electrical switching property was measured upon the Ag-TCNQ films with different combined sandwich-shaped electrodes. The results show that the films can have very stable switching properties. The switching time between high and low impedance states is about 10 ns, and the switching voltage is around 4.0 V. The film preparation parameters and different layered structures have an important influence on the characteristic of the films. The switching mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:Electric bistable characteristics in Ag-TCNQ thin films were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). TCNQ powder, TCNQ thin films and Ag-TCNQ thin films with and without heat treatment were prepared and characterized. The results show that TCNQ keeps at the same chemical slates during the processes of vacuum deposition and post-heat-treatment moderately in atmosphere. The reactions between Ag and TCNQ are accelerated by heat treatment, and the electric switching properties are affected by the reaction degree.

Abstract:We studied the optical bistability of subwavelength metallic film coated by Kerr dielectric gratings numerically. It is found that the effect of optical bistability in the structure is explained by the excitations of the coupled surface plasmon polaritons at the coated metallic films. The effect of thickness of the metallic films on bistability loop is analyzed in detail, and the authors attribute the change of the bistability loop to the lifetime of the coupled surface plasmon polaritons.

Abstract:The electric properties of organometallic material Ag(TCNQ) were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. Electric bistability and negative differential resistance were found, and the transition between high and low resistance states can be repeated. The threshold voltage is much lower than that on the sandwiched sample. Nanoscale electric storage properties including writing, reading and erasing were investigated. The results show that Ag(TCNQ) can be expected to use as a good ultrahigh density data storage material.

Abstract:Ultrafast optical bistability was observed in a planar optical waveguide made with a 2,9,16,23-tetraoctadecanoylamido-substituted vanadyl phthalocyanine-doped polystyrene film. Input-output curves with hysteresis characteristics were measured with laser pulses of 60-ps pulse width at 532 nm. The switchup and switchdown times were less than 10 and 20 ps, respectively. The origin of the nonlinearity giving rise to optical bistability was predominantly electronic effects. (C) 1996 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report on a theoretical demonstration of optical bistability in periodic layered media, particularly in long-period GaAs-AlAs superlattices. The proposed structure consists of a periodic multilayer system, as opposed to previously demonstrated nonlinear bistable devices which employed Fabry-Perot etalons. The optical resonance effect which is essential for bistable devices is, in our case, induced by a refractive index modulation. The nonlinear active medium is distributed in the whole structure rather than placed between the two mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. It is shown by a complete calculation of wave propagation in the periodic nonlinear medium that a multiple valued feature appears in the structure's nonlinear reflectivity spectrum. The input/output characteristics of the structure exhibit bistable hysteresis similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon. Both the reflection and the transmission modes are analyzed. The intensity threshold for bistability is shown to be as low as 9 kW/cm2 for a 30-period GaAs-AlAs superlattice of a thickness of about 4-mu-m. The characteristics of this type of device are discussed and compared to those based on Fabry-Perot etalons.

Abstract:The K(TCNQ) thin film was prepared by a method of solid chemical replacement reaction in vacuum. The molecular structure obtained in the film is the same as that in K(TCNQ) single crystal and polycrystalline solids. The film shows electric bistable behavior above 300 K, which is different from single crystal of K(TCNQ). It is expected that this material will be applied to fabricate photoelectric switch and in electric information storage.

Abstract:Optical bistability in a unidirectional cavity has been analyzed based on a ground-state doublet three-level atomic model in which atoms are initially prepared in a coherent superposition state, It is shown that bistability can be realized due to the initial coherence. Furthermore, the bistable hysteresis cycle becomes wider as the initial polarization increases, and the bistability can be controlled by the initial coherence.

Abstract:A developed two-dimensional Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method has been performed to investigate the optical bistability in a subwavelength metallic grating coated by nonlinear material. Different bistability loops have been shown to depend on parameters of the structure. The influences of two key parameters, thickness of nonlinear material and slit width of metallic grating, have been studied in detail. The effect of optical bistability in the structure is explained by Surface Plasmons (SPs) mode and resonant waveguide theory.

Abstract:The steady-state behavior in a unidirectional cavity has been analyzed by taking into account the effect of phase fluctuation in the control field based on a Λ-type atomic model. It is shown that even if both fields are in resonance with the corresponding atomic transitions, optical bistability can still be realized due to a phase fluctuation in the control field. Furthermore, the bistable hysteresis loop becomes wider as the linewidth increases.

Abstract:The surface chemical state and morphology of as-deposited and post-heat-treated electrical bistable Ag-TCNQ thin films have been investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. The post-heat-treatment process promotes the reaction between Ag and TCNQ to form a complex, and finally Ag-TCNQ films with grain size of 50 nm and surface flatness in nanometer-scale have been obtained. XPS analysis reveals that the bonds between Ag and TCNQ are near cyan ends and cause new state of nitrogen originated by electrons transfer from Ag to TCNQ.

By means of the rate-equation approximation of a density-matrix method, the state equation of optical bistability with absorption or dispersion of single state and triple state was numerically discussed. The effect of the cooperative parameter, atomic and cavity detuning parameter on the optical bistability was analyzed.

Abstract:We report the first observation of the magnon-polariton bistability in a cavity magnonics system consisting of cavity photons strongly interacting with the magnons in a small yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere. The bistable behaviors emerged as sharp frequency switchings of the cavity magnon polaritons (CMPs) and related to the transition between states with large and small numbers of polaritons. In our experiment, we align, respectively, the [100] and [110] crystallographic axes of the YIG sphere parallel to the static magnetic field and find very different bistable behaviors (e. g., clockwise and counter-clockwise hysteresis loops) in these two cases. The experimental results are well fitted and explained as being due to the Kerr nonlinearity with either a positive or negative coefficient. Moreover, when the magnetic field is tuned away from the anticrossing point of CMPs, we observe simultaneous bistability of both magnons and cavity photons by applying a drive field on the lower branch.

Abstract:Ag/TCNQ bi-layer films with different thickness were prepared on glass substrates by alternating vacuum deposition of Ag and TCNQ. The transport behavior in the film was studied using transmission spectrum to monitor the process. An ab normal accelerated transport phenomenon was observed when the film was ultra thin and a tunneling model was proposed to explain this phenomenon.

Abstract:Many organic materials exhibit large nonlinearity. Bistability in nitrobenzene1 and dye2 has been observed. The first observation of optical bistability and multistability in Canada balsam is reported here. This kind of optical bistability device (OBD) is economical; solidification makes it convenient in operation. It may be useful in optical computing systems.

Abstract:Optical bistability was observed and studied in the output of reflected beam as well as in that of m-lines in a doped polymer thin film quasi-waveguide. The physical origin was demonstrated to be the existence of a mode spectrum and the high third-order nonlinearity of the polymer film. It was also observed for the first time that the intensity variation of the reflected beam and the m-line in the hysteresis loops are complementary to each other.

Abstract:Electrical bistable Ag-TCNQ thin films with uniform grains in nanometer scale were prepared by vacuum evaporation and post-annealing in atmosphere. Physical and chemical properties of the films were evaluated and investigated by a variety means of visible light transmission spectra, XRD, AFM images, FT-IR and XPS. It was found that post-annealing not only makes complexation reaction occurred between Ag and TCNQ but also reduces the grain size. Furthermore, the transition of electrical bistable in a local region and recording dots of nanometer scale have been realized by STM.
