Abstract:The compression of optical pulses from a 1.55 ��m gain-switched DFB laser diode using normal dispersion fiber is studied. With numerical calculation from single-mode rate equation of a semiconductor laser, the output pulse parameters in time and frequency domains are investigated under different gain-switching conditions. The compression effect of optical pulses in normal dispersion fiber is also studied by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation solved with the Split-Step Fourier transformation method numerically. The achieved results indicate that the gain-switching conditions greatly influence the chirp of optical pulses and the compression effect. The compression of ultrashort optical pulses with a 5 GHz repetition rate from 42.6 ps to 6.2 ps is demonstrated experimentally by using a normal dispersion fiber. Experimental results agree with numerical calculations well.

Abstract:Optical pulses generated from gain-switched MQW-DFB semiconductor laser with repetition rate of 2.5 GHz are firstly compressed from 53.8 ps to 12 ps using dispersion compensation fiber. Then, the 12 ps pulses are compressed to 2.5 ps using soliton-effect compression in dispersion-shifted fiber. Finally, the pulses of 2.5 ps are compressed to 0.83 ps in dispersion-decreasing fiber.

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond nonlinear amplification fiber laser system using a vector-dispersion compressor, which consists of a transmission grating pair and multipass cell based Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors. The mirror is designed with nearly zero group-delay dispersion and large negative third-order dispersion. As a result, the third-order dispersion of the compressor can be adjusted independently to compensate the nonlinear phase shift of amplified pulses to reduce the pulse pedestal. With this scheme, the system outputs 44 fs laser pulses with little wing at 26.6W output average power and 531 nJ pulse energy, corresponding to 10.8MW peak power. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The elimination of chirp by combining Fabry-Perot spectral window and normal dispersion fiber was theoretically and experimentally studied. All the optical fibers used in experimental setup had losses of 0.3 dB/km, the effective area of the fiber was 56 square micrometers. The ultrashort optical pulse with chirp parameter, which was smaller than the critical value, the repetitive rate of 5 GHz and pulse width of 16.2 ps were experimentally generated. The soliton transmission was achieved after the chirp of the optical pulse was eliminated, and the high order soliton with pulse width of 13 ps was observed.

Abstract:The high-order optical soliton-compression-effects in a loss-fiber were theoretically analyzed here, and on this basis, the relationships among the optimal fiber-length, the narrowest pulse-width, and the optical soliton-order were obtained for the optical-pulse-comprression in the loss-fiber. A compression was successfully realized experimentally by using a F-P spectral window and the optical soliton-effect to compress the 44.2ps-pulses generated from a gain-switched DFB laser into 4.8ps-pulses at ��=1.55��m. This achievement is in agreement with that predicted by the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Compression and broadening of picosecond pulses in dispersion-shifted optical fibers are reported by directly displaying the temporal profile through a CSA803 communication signal analyzer. 46 ps pulses at 1.55 ��m generated from a gain switched distributed feedback laser diode were broadened or compressed to 65 ps or 35 ps in a 10 km-long dispersion-shifted fiber with dispersion parameter of ��2 ps km -1 nm -1, respectively. 41 ps pulses at 1.26 ��m were distorted and broadened to 100 ps in the fibers.

Abstract:This paper studies that generation of 20 GHz ultra-short optical pulse series by 10 GHz DFB-LD with OTDM and pulse compression technology. A novel three-stage compression technology is brought forward, including compensation in normal dispersion fiber, compressing in anomalous dispersion fiber followed normal dispersion fiber and in comb-like dispersion profile fiber (CDPF). In the experiment, the compressed pulse of 3.3 ps pulse width was obtained and the total compress factor is 7.6. This technique is important for implementing an 80 Gb/s OTDM system

Abstract:A phase shift increasing method (PSIM) is proposed to construct a comb-like dispersion profiled fiber (CDPF) with an optimum-designed dispersion map. Using this CDPF, a 10-GHz, 12-ps pulse generated from an actively mode-locked Er3+-doped fiber ring laser (AML-EDFL) is compressed to 2 ps without a pedestal. The compressed optical pulse source is used in a 40-Gb/s 247-Km optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system with a transmission power penalty of 0.42 dB. Abstract:In this paper,we study theoretically and experimentally the compression of chirped optical pulses in dispersion-compensation fiber and dispersion-shifted fiber utilizing single mode rate equation of semiconductor laser and nonlinear Schrdinger (NLS) equation.In experiment,the 53.8ps pulses generated by a gain-switched DFB semiconductor laser diode with 2.5GHz repetition rate were compressed to 12ps in a length of dispersion-compensation fiber.Then,the 12ps pulses were compressed to 2.5 or 2.1ps due to high-order soliton effect in dispersion-shifted fiber.Experimental results agree with theoretical results.

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrated a few-cycle pulse generation system delivering an 8-fs and 13-nJ pulse. The oscillator of this system is a mode-locked fiber laser based on a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM), which is injected into the gain management nonlinear (GMN) amplifier after pre-chirp management by a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) and a passive fiber. Subsequently, a hollow-core photonic bandgap (HC-PBG) fiber is employed to compensate for the dispersion, achieving a pulse duration of 49.8 fs with a pulse energy of 51.8 nJ. Finally, we integrate an ultra-high numerical aperture (UHNA) fiber at the end of the HC-PBG fiber for nonlinear spectral broadening. The resulting spectral range spans from 800 to 1400 nm. Dispersion compensation is achieved using the prism-pair, resulting in a further compression of the pulse duration to 8.2 fs, with a pulse energy of 13.1 nJ and a peak power of 1.59 MW. With an overall system footprint of <0.1 m 2 and a total volume of <0.005 m 3 , this few-cycle pulse generation system delivers ultra-short pulses with high peak power while maintaining compactness and stability, making it attractive for many applications.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a simple route to few-optical-cycle pulse generation from a mid-infrared fiber laser through nonlinear compression of pulses from a holmium-doped fiber oscillator using a short length of chalcogenide fiber and a grating pair. Pulses from the oscillator with 265-fs duration at 2.86 {\mu}m are spectrally broadened through self-phase modulation in step-index As2S3 fiber to 141-nm bandwidth and then re-compressed to 70 fs (7.3 optical cycles). These are the shortest pulses from a mid-infrared fiber system to date, and we note that our system is compact, robust, and uses only commercially available components. The scalability of this approach is also discussed, supported by numerical modeling.

Abstract:A short pulse generator based on a commercially available bulk material electroabsorption modulator was experimentally demonstrated. By optimizing the length of the dispersion compensation fibre, nearly transform limited pulse was generated. There are a 2-ps-pulsed train with a timing jitter of 650 fs and a repetition rate of 10 GHz obtained with two-stage nonlinear compression. The quality of the pulse was further verified by 4 x 10 Gbit/s optical time-division-multiplexed communication system experiment in which a low demultiplexing power penalty of 0.3 dB was achieved.

Abstract:We built a pulse compressor using a. comb-like dispersion-profiled fiber fiber (CDPF). The CDPF consists of 12-segment fibers with the dispersion alternatively high and low. Using this compressor and a 17 dBm Erbium-doped,cd fiber amplifier, the 10 GHz, 12 ps pulses generated from an actively mode-locked Er3+ doped fiber ring laser was compressed to similar to2 ps without pedestal. We also show that compared with the high order soliton pulse compressor, the power efficiency can be doubled in supercontinuum generation by using the primp pulses compressed by this CDPF compressor.

Abstract:We investigate the adiabatic enhanced compression of ultrashort pulses from a distributed feedback laser operated at 1550 nm in fibres with slowly decreasing dispersion (FSDD). High-quality pulse compressions from 4.4 ps down to 1.1ps in a 100m FSDD and from 4.4ps down to 830fs in a 500m FSDD are obtained. The Raman self-frequency shift of femtosecond pulses in the compression is observed. Theoretical analyses are in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:High repetition rate fiber lasers have attracted great attention in recent years due to their potential applications including spectroscopy and laser processing. In this manuscript, we have demon-strated sub-30 fs pulses directly from a compact Er-doped fiber laser amplifier system with a high repetition rate of ∼203 MHz. The design of the laser comprises of a home-built oscillator based on nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locking mechanism, an all-fiber amplifier, and a fiber type compressor. By optimizing the length of single mode fiber compressor, the shortest pulse duration of 26 fs is achieved, which is ∼4.9 optical cycle at 1570 nm. The average output power of the de-chirped pulse is 267 mW with corresponding pulse energy of 1.3 nJ. Such a high repetition rate fiber laser with few-cycle pulse holds tremendous potential for numerous applications that require high temporal resolution, and high photon flux.

Abstract:The propagation characteristics of optical pulses in various dispersion fibers were analyzed by numerically solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The optical pulse compression factor and compressed pulse quality in different dispersion decreasing fibers were compared. The compression factor of the pulses in comb-like dispersion fiber instead of dispersion decreasing fiber was calculated. To optimize the picosecond optical pulse compression, a novel method of combining high order soliton pulse compression and dispersion decreasing fiber compression was proposed.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of 350 fs pulse by post-compression of a neodymium (Nd)-doped picosecond laser within a single stage bulk multi-pass cell (MPC) device. By meticulous design and precise alignment of the optical path, a record-high number of 125 passes is implemented, resulting in a spectral broadening factor of 16 and a pulse compression factor of 27.1. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first instance of a 300-fs class pulse width being emitted from a single-stage MPC post-compression Nd-doped picosecond laser device. It also has been proven to be applicable for laser processing.
