Abstract:The principle of ultra high speed directional protection based on the energy function of the fault component was discussed in this paper. In order to resolve the problems caused by the unbalance situations in system swing and the lacking in sensitivity of the relays in infinite power system, a practical adaptive direction criterion was proposed. The principle proposed in this paper has theoretically solved the defects of the short holding time of the fault direction in the travelling wave protection and the error in the fundamental wave fault component protection model, thus the speed and safety of the protection operation are improved. The property of the principle was analyzed using the EMTP program.

Abstract:The traveling-wave-based directional protection schemes have been studied for years, but essentially these protection performances are still influenced by low inception angles, reflective traveling-waves, etc. This paper presents a novel transient-based directional relay, the kernel unit of directionalprotection, for transmission line. The relay identifies fault direction by means of comparing the energy magnitude of the forward traveling-wave component with that of the backward. The relay algorithm is designed with the wavelet technology that fits for transient signal analysis. Traveling-wave components are extracted from fault-induced signals with wavelet multi-resolution analysis, and the wavelet transform spectral energy (WTSE) represents the energy of traveling-wave component. Numerous EMTP simulation tests show that this proposed relay response is reliable, sensitive and ultra-high-speed. Meanwhile the relay performance can endure the influences of various factors, including different fault inception angles, fault distances, fault types, fault path resistances, fault arcing, feeder modes on bus bar. The ultra-high-speed directional protection composed of this proposed relay will be worthy of application greatly.

Abstract:The existence of fault resistance may add an additional reactive or capacitive component to the measured impedance seen by the protection. This may cause conventional quadrangular distance protection to overreach or under-reach under different system conditions. It is shown that the measured impedance locus with fault resistance seen by the protection is an arc that can be estimated by using voltages and currents measured by the protection. A novel adaptive algorithm for digital distance protection based on real-time measured impedance locus estimation is put forward. Theoretical analysis and digital simulation show that the new adaptive distance relay with enhanced resistive tolerance can overcome steady-state overreach for both phase to phase and phase to ground fault.

Abstract:Impedance between faulted line and ground was generally regarded as a resistance,but in some cases the equivalent impedance can be reactive.The impedance loci with fault impedance seen by the protection in this condition was analyzed.Based on different mal-operation of relay,the solution scheme was given and an adaptive criterion was proposed.The simulation results show that the new adaptive relay has excellent adaptablity and selectivity,can prevent error action,illustrates a good prospect of application and extension.

Abstract:A new algorithm of ultra-high-speed directional relay for high voltage transmission lines is proposed based on comprehensive vector and symmetrical component methods. The direction of fault can be judged by calculating the phase difference between voltage and current in a shorter data window. The protection speed of the relay is faster than the conventional directional protection based on power frequency. Its reliability is higher than the travelling-wave-based protection. It has high sensitivity.

Abstract:The contradiction between the speed and the filter performance of relay protection filter algorithm has prevented further improvement of speed of relay protection. This paper proposes a noise evaluation based adaptive fast distance relay protection, that evaluates the error of filter algorithm by real-time detecting the noise level of fault signal, and adapts the action threshold of distance relay according to the error, to get the best action speed. The relay protection has been adopted by a digital high-voltage transmission-line protection instrument. The physical test result of the instrument proves that the relay protection not only can prevent error action during out-area faults, but also has very fast action speed during in-area faults.

Abstract:The principle of the ultra-high-speed directional protection based on the energy function of the fault component is analyzed. It is pointed out that the lumped parameter equivalence circuit, is unsuitable for analysis of the ultra-high-speed relaying because the transient performance during initial period of fault in a practical power system cannot be represented well with the lumped parameter equivalence circuit. So time-domain analysis and frequency-domain analysis should be preferred in the course of the ultra-high-speed protection studies. The distributed parameter model should be adopted. The influence for the non-linearity of power system should be considered reasonably in the system model. The analysis of energy directional protection can be divided into three periods: The first period is that the performance of the protection corresponds to the directional protection based on travelling waves. After a half fundamental period, it is the power directional protection. In the middle period, the trip of the protection should be deliberative.

Abstract:This paper introduces the implementation method of the proposed new directional relay algorithm for high voltage transmission lines including design of digital lowpass filter, calculation of positive-sequence fault component and generalized phasor, fault criterion. A simulation on the first 500 kV transmission line in China and its relative network with the proposed algorithm demonstrates that the protection speed of the new directional relay is faster than that of the conventional ones based on fundamental frequency, and its reliability is higher than the travelling-wave-based protection.

Abstract:Taking distance relay as the research object, the dynamic characteristics of its operation equation on impedance plane are analyzed. The simulation software of distance relay is developed applying the same data-handling technique of real protective equipment. COMTRADE data format is used in its data-input module and multi-views graphics are adopted in its display module. The internal information and dynamic behavior of distance relay elements are displayed directly at each sampling point of fault data, which describes the process of protective operation transparently, visually and quantitatively. The simulation software is tested with the real recorded fault data and the simulative fault data based on PSCAD/EMTDC for startup component, phase-selector, power frequency variable relay, grounding distance relay. Test results show that the dynamic behavior of the internal components of real protective equipment under different operating conditions can be exactly re-produced and evaluated.

Abstract:Effective analysis method is required to analyze the entire traveling wave (TW) process, which includes the initial and succeeding TWs. As TW directional protection only uses the initial TWs to avoid potential confusion that may be caused by the aliasing of TWs, a long-term reliable criterion is difficult to offer. Thus, this paper proposes an analysis method for the whole TW process based on an equivalent TW process and a novel directional protection approach. Based on this equivalent TW process, the protection can overcome the limit of presenting long-term criterion, the problem of detecting a fault close to the relay location, and the insufficient sensitivity under the fault with an inception angle near zero that troubles the conventional TW directional protection. Extensive simulation of EMTP/ATP verified the performance of this protection.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel comprehensive-sequence components based directional relay to improve the protection performance of the power supply system of important power consumers. Based on the analysis of the characteristic of the phase relationship between the positive-sequence voltage and current in the fault conditions, Active Power Factor is defined to track the loading conditions real-time in the power system. In the proposed technique, the sensitivity of this novel relay is self-compensative by the Comprehensive-sequence components Criteria. Actually, by means of the studies on the characteristic of this novel relay, the proposed technique can be self-adaptive to the loading conditions, suitable for any type of fault and hold their fault direction decision stably.

Abstract:A novel directional relay in time domain is proposed in the paper and can be used in the transmission line for wind power integration. Firstly, the models of grounding fault and non-grounding fault in the forward and reverse side of relay location are established, respectively. As for a forward non-grounding fault, the current and voltage of fault phases satisfies a module with positive resistance and positive inductance. As for a forward grounding fault, the zero module current and voltage measured at the relay location satisfies a model with negative resistance and negative inductance model in the zero module net. Then, the forward fault model conformity is defined on the basis of correlation analysis theory. Using the resistance and inductance calculated based on least square method, the forward fault model conformity is almost equal to 1 for a forward fault and -1 for a reverse fault. Thus, the fault direction can be identified by model recognition. Eventually, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by simulation in PSCAD.

Abstract:The paper presents a directional relay and a direction comparison protection scheme based on instantaneous power for UHV transmission line, in which instantaneous passive power was defined using Hilbert transform. Using instantaneous active power and instantaneous passive power measured at the relaying point, the relay can determine the fault direction in very short time since the fault occurs, even in 2 ms. The operation time performance depends on the characteristics of fault generated travelling waves. If the fault occurs as the voltage is crossing zero, direction determination will be based on post-fault power-frequency voltage and current, and the operation time will be less than 20 ms. And the paper proposes direction comparison protection scheme integrated with the directional relay. Simulation studies show that the directional relay and the protection are with high speed operation, excellent reliability, sensitivity, and adaptability, and it is an ideal protection of UHV transmission lines.

Abstract:This paper introduces in detail the principle, characteristics and algorithms of a directional transverse differential relaying protection device by a microcomputer. The device has been installed and successfully operated in Gongyuan substation in Anshan city since 1992. It has been working out all kinds of necessary protection for the 66kV parallel double lines in that substation. After four years operation, it did not show any reject-action or malfunctioning action. The practice proved that: the technique of this protection device is advanced; the designs of hardware and software are correct; and its characteristics and functionality of protection are obviously better than those traditional devices. There is no voltage dead zone and the latent operation has been eliminated in this device. This improves the sensitivity and election ability a lot.

Abstract:Transients-based earth fault protections cannot trip reliably for earthing faults with high resistance in a small current distribution system due to low magnitude of the high-frequency transient signals. Directional protection based on zero-sequence active power can trip reliably only with the presence of damping resistor during fault, and can be used as back-up protection. Phase comparison method is not applicable to arcing fault and intermittent fault. Energy method also has a drawback because of its vulnerability to current transformer error. This method which use the active power coefficient of the zero-sequence signal which is lower than 100 Hz is proposed. This method determines the faulty point direction through this coefficient. Digital simulation and actual fault recordings data have verified the feasibility of the proposed method, and is not subject to measurement error of current transformer.

Abstract:The fault currents characteristics of inverter-interfaced renewable energy sources (IIRESs) such as direct-drive permanent magnetic synchronous generator and photovoltaic mainly include weak feed, the variety of source impedance and frequency deviation, which may lead to the false operation of distance protection for transmission line connecting inverter-interfaced renewable energy power plant (IIREPP). The R-L differential equation algorithm based time-domain distance protection is not affected by the fault characteristics of IIRES, but it is difficult to determine the fault direction when faults near the relay. In this paper, a directional element suitable for transmission line connecting IIREPP is proposed, and an improved time-domain distance protection composed of the directional element and the R-L differential equation algorithm based time-domain distance protection is proposed. The characteristics of fault currents of IIRES and traditional AC power grid are analyzed and summarized by deriving the analytical expressions of their fault currents in dq synchronous reference frame. The analysis results show that when the back of the relay is the IIRES and the AC power grid respectively, the change trends of the d-axis component of their fault currents are the same in a short time after faults occur in front of the relay, and the changes of q-axis component of their fault currents are obviously different. The directional element is proposed based on the characteristics of the fault currents on both sides of the transmission line connecting IIREPP. The simulation results verify effectiveness of the proposed protection scheme.

Abstract:The paper first analyzes the main protection principles utilized in wide-area relaying protection system,including wide-area current differential protection,wide-area direction comparative protection and wide-area information based adaptive protection. With regard to the research status and exiting problems,this paper proposes some suggestions. Then from the application aspect,both the system structures and the division methods for information domain in the wide-area relaying protection system are expounded. How to realize system fault-tolerance and optimization based on wide-area redundant information is also discussed. The paper finally investigates how to apply related information technologies such as IEC61850 standard,multi-agent technology and grid computing technology to the wide-area relaying protection system. Wide area information based wide-area protection,which achieves both the relay protection and stability control,has become the central issue of modern power system research,and will be the future of power system protection and control.
