Abstract:A magnesium ion indiffusion process is applied to LiNbO3 single crystal fibres deposited with MgO thin film on their surface. A core-cladding waveguide structure with different refractive index profile is formed in LiNbO3 single crystal fibres by selecting suitable diffusion parameters such as diffusion temperature, diffusion time and MgO film thickness. An electron probe microanalysis was used to measure the Mg-ion concentration distribution of the Mg diffused layer. The propagation loss of the clad crystal fibre (Mg-diffused crystal fibre) is measured to be 14 times lower than that of the unclad crystal fibre and the transmission modes were observed. The microstructural characteristics of the Mg diffused crystal fibres were also characterized by using Laue X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that a good starting single crystal of the Mg diffused crystal fibres can be preserved by controlling suitable diffusion parameters and matching suitable crystal fibre diameter.

Abstract:This paper presents the absorption spectrum, fluorescent spectrum and scattering characteristics of Nd:YAG single-crystal optical fiber (SCF). The measured results indicate that the Nd:YAG SCF grown by means of the LHPG method is in agreement with the bulk crystal in the properties such as absorption spectrum, and fluorescent spectrum. The defects and diameter variations of the SCF are also analyzed.

Abstract:A core-cladding waveguide structure for the a-axis Nd:MgO: LiNbO3 single crystal fiber with parabolic refractive index profiles was achieved by a Mg-ion indiffusion process. Propagation loss coefficient of the cladded crystal fiber was measured and is 7 times lower than the uncladded crystal fibers. Transmission modes of the 60 mu m x 45 mu m cladded crystal fiber were observed and the low order modes propagation was obtained.

The propagation loss of the cladded crystal fiber was measured, and it was found that its loss coefficient is about 14 dB/cm lower than that of the uncladded crystal fiber. The output optical beam patterns of the cladded and uncladded crystal fiber were observed, and it was found that three ridges of the cladded crystal fiber core disappear gradually in the Mg-ion indiffusion process.

Abstract:Lithium niobate single crystal fiber with parabolic refractive index profile cladding was achieved by using Mg-ion in diffusion process. It has been proved by experiments that the refractive index profile varies with the diffusion parameters such as the diffusion temperature, diffusion time and the thickness of MgO film. Suitable diffusion temperature is 1050-1100 ��C. Mg-ion concentration profiles of the magnesium diffused layer by theoretical simulation are close to the experimental results.

Abstract:We report the implementation of a low loss core-cladding waveguide structure of an a-axis Nd:MgO:LiNbO3 single crystal fiber and the demonstration of a frequency-doubled laser made from such a cladded crystal fiber. The laser-heated pedestal grown a-axis single crystal fiber, which has an elliptical cross sectional area of about 200 mu m x 150 mu m, was further treated with a Mg-ion indiffusion process. An electron probe microanalysis was used to measure the Mg-ion concentration distribution of the Mg diffused layer. After a number of trials, the diffusion parameters suitable for forming a core-cladding waveguide structure have been obtained. The optical and structural properties of the cladded crystal fibers were also characterized. A diode pumped external cavity frequency doubled laser has been made from the cladded crystal fiber, At room temperature, a CW green laser output with a power of 10 mu W at the wavelength of 0.532 mu m has been obtained. The origins of the relatively low frequency-doubled conversion efficiency will also be discussed.

Abstract:A magnesium ion indiffusion process is applied to lithium niobate single–crystal fibers. Electron probe microanalysis shows that magnesium ions have diffused into the bulk of the crystal fibers and the magnesium ion concentration in the magnesium–diffused layer has an approximately parabolic profile, which corresponds to that of theoretical simulation. It is shown by conventional X–ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy that a good starting single crystal of the magnesium–diffused crystal fiber can be preserved by controlling suitable diffusion parameters such as diffusion temperature, diffusion time, and MgO film thickness, etc., to ensure the completeness of magnesium ion indiffusion, but the magnesium–diffused region etches differently from virgin‐region crystals.

It is found by X-ray diffraction analysis as well as scanning electron microscopy that MgO-rich layer in the magnesium diffused surface exhibits the crystal structure of a new compound From the Li-Mg-Nb-O ternary system. It is proposed, for the first time, that this new compound in MgO-rich layer is the real source of Mg-ion indiffusion lithium niobate.

Abstract:Characteristics of MgO-rich layer in the magnesium diffused lithium niobate single crystal surface layer are investigated with the conventional X-ray diffraction and glancing-incidence X-ray diffraction. It is found that the MgO-rich layer is composed of an unknown compound and MgNb2O6. The MgNb2O6 is in the surface layer of MgO-rich layer, the unknown compound is in the subsurface layer beneath the MgNb2O6. The compounds have apparent preferred orientation.

Abstract:LiNbO3:Mg+Ti monocrystalline fibers with a diameter of 200-1000 mu m have been successfully grown by the laser-heated pedestal growth method. The lattice parameters, the dopant Mg- and Ti concentrations, and the ferroelectric domain structure of the fibers were determined. The results are compared with those in the large crystals grown by the Czochralski method.

Abstract:A study of the Mg-ion indiffusion to lithium niobate (LiNbO3) single-crystal fiber was carried out using MgF2 as the diffusion source. A core-cladding waveguide structure was obtained for a c-axis LiNbO3 single-crystal fiber with a diameter of 200 µm, and the optical characteristics of the cladded crystal fiber were given. By means of electron probe microanalysis, the activation energy for Mg-ion indiffusion was estimated to be 104 kJ/mol. It was also found by X-ray diffraction analysis that the Mg-diffused layer has serious lattice distortion and the LiNb3O8 compound appears beyond a certain extent of Mg-ion indiffusion. The appearance of the LiNb3O8 compound is related to Li-ion outdiffusion from the bulk of LiNbO3 and the large amount of F ions from MgF2 due to Mg-ion indiffusion to LiNbO3. It was indicated by scanning electron microscopy that F ions appear in the form of LiF particles and these particles volatilize from the surface of the Mg-diffused layer with increased diffusion.

Abstract:LiNbO(3) (Mg:LN) crystal is an important electro-optical material and MgO-doped LiNbO(3) was expected to improve its optical damage resistance. In the present work, we reported the Bridgman growth of MgO-doped LiNbO(3) crystal. The growth parameters were discussed and the defects were investigated by the chemical etching method. The etch hillocks and etch pits were observed on the negative Z surface while only etch pits on the positive Z surface by the optical microscope and EPMA. The etching morphology was discussed considering the domain structure.

Abstract:A series of Zn, Fe double-doped LiNbO3 crystals were grown by Czochralski technique with 0.015wt% of Fe2O3 and with different concentration of ZnO. The defect structures of the Zn:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals were studied by X-ray diffraction analyses and IR absorption spectra. The results indicated that the lattice constants of the Zn:Fe:LiNbO3 increase with the concentration of ZnO increasing in the crystals. The result indicates that the absorption peaks of the IR transmission spectra shift to the shorter wavelength with the increasing of concentration of ZnO. The optical damage resistance ability of the Zn:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals were investigated by straightly observing transmission facula distortion method, respectively. The results demonstrate that, compared with of Fe:LiNbO3, the optical damage resistance ability of the Zn (7.0mol%):Fe:LiNbO3 crystals is two orders magnitude higher than that of LiNbO3 crystal. 6.0mol% of ZnO is the perfect doping concentration.

Abstract:Mg:Ru:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals with various [Li]/[Nb] ratios([Li]/[Nb] = 0.946, 1.05, 1.20 and 1.38) were grown in air by the Czochralski method. The structure and composition were analyzed by the X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). It was found that doping ions and the change of [Li]/[Nb] ratio cannot change the structure of crystal. The optical damage resistance of Mg:Ru:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals was studied by exposure energy flow method. The results showed that when the [Li]/[Nb] ratio of Mg:Ru:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals reached to 1.38, the optical damage resistance of Mg:Ru:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals is highest. Characterization of Lithium Niobate Single Crystal Diffused with Magnesium by DTA

Abstract:Based on the report given by J. E. Midwinter([1]) that the refractive indices n(o) and n(e) of lithium niobate doped with magnesium (MgO:LiNbO3) are lower than those of LiNbO3, S. Sude et al.([2]) achieved for the first time the core-cladding wave guide structure of LiNbO3 single crystal fibers by using a Mg-ion indiffusion process in 1987. In this note, the Curie temperature of the Mg-diffused LiNbO3 single crystal is investigated for the first time by means of differential thermal analysis (DTA). It is found that the Curie temperature of the Mg-diffused LiNbO3 single crystal decreases with the increase of diffusion time at first, but beyond a limit, the Curie temperature starts to increase again and appears the second-phase transition point. It is well known that LiNbO3 has only one Curie temperature; therefore, the second-phase transition point is probably the phase transition point of a new compound in MgO-rich layer of the Mg-diffused surface layer. These conclusions are proved further by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD).

Abstract:An magnesium(MgO)-doped near-stoichiometric lithium niobate crystal(MgO：SLN) of 40 mm in diameter and 60 mm in length was grown by an improved Czochralski technique from a 58.5% (in molar fraction，the same below) Li melt doped with 2% MgO in a platinum crucible．The concentration of Nb5+ and Mg2+ in the growth crystal was measured by X-ray fluorescence．The defects structure of MgO：SLN was investigated by ultraviolet absorption spectra and infrared absorption spectra．The MgO：SLN crystal exhibited a shorter absorption edge wavelength．and the OH- infrared absorption band showed that the MgO doping concentration of the MgO：SLN crystal exceeded the optical damage resistance threshold concentration．The specific heat capacity of the crystal was measured to be 0.69 J/(g·K) and was higher than that of congruent LiNbO3(CLN) crystal 0.64 J/(g·K)．

Abstract:In:Mg:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals were grown by the Czochralski technique with various ratios of Li/Nb=0.85, 0.94, 1.05, 1.20 and 1.38 in the melt. The crystal composition and defect structure were analyzed by the UV–vis and IR spectroscopy. A new narrow OH−-associated vibrational peak at 3518cm−1 was revealed in In:Mg:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals with the ratio of Li/Nb=1.38. It was attributed to a (InNb)2−–OH−–(MgNb)3− defect center. The optical damage resistance of In:Mg:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals was studied by the transmitted beam pattern distortion method. The results show that when both the In2O3 threshold and the “In–Mg threshold” concentrations are reached, as for the Li/Nb ratio of 1.38, the optical damage resistance of In:Mg:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals is the highest.

Abstract:A series of LiNbO3 crystals doped with various MgO concentrations (0, 3%, and 5 mol%) was simultaneously grown in one furnace by the modified vertical Bridgman method. The wet chemistry method was used to prepare the polycrystalline powders, and the growth conditions were optimized. The full width at half maximum of high-resolution X-ray rocking curves for (001) reflection of 5 mol% Mg doped lithium niobate (LN) crystal was about 8″, which meant it possessed high crystalline quality. The OH− absorption spectra shifted to 3534.7 cm−1, and the UV absorption edge violet shift indicated that 5 mol% MgO successfully doped in LN and exceeded the threshold. The extraordinary refractive index gradient of 5 mol% Mg doped LN crystal was as small as 2.5 × 10−5/cm, which exhibited high optical homogeneity.
