Abstract:The composition, microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the static thermit SHS (self high-temperature synthesis) ceramic coating were analyzed. it was found that adding Re or SiO 2 into the coating can improve the microstructure distribution, decrease the porosity and enhance the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Abstract:This paper reviews some coating technologies based on Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS), including reactive thermal spraying, centrifugal-SHS process, molten-SHS coating and reactive casting coating. Their process, characteristics and coating properties are demonstrated. These coating technologies, usually used for preparing ceramic or cermet coatings, are attracting much attention because of notable advantages, such as energy saving, operation simplicity and high purity of the products.

Abstract:A composite coating containing nanosized ceramic powders was fabricated by a supersonic arc-spraying procedure using corresponding cored wires.The microstructure and high temperature erosion property of the coating were studied by characterizations with optical microscope,microhardness,X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy,with special attentions paid to the effect of the subsequent annealing treatment.The results show that the skin and the cored powders melted and fused to form homogeneous solid solutions during the arc-spraying procedure using the cored wires.The achieved coating shows homogeneous hardness.The subsequent annealing of the coating reduced defects and residual stress,decomposed the metastable phases and at the same time improved the crystallinity of corresponding phases in the coating,which in turn improved its hardness.The high-temperature erosion resistance of the coatings after the subsequent annealing improved significantly.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CFRCMCs) have great high temperature mechanical properties and thermal properties. They are ideal thermal structure materials and environmental protection materials in aerospace field. In order to improve the anti-oxidation ablative property of the composite material, a double layer composite coating is prepared based on the slurry sintering method, with ZrB2-SiC glass as the inner layer and ZrB2-MoSi2 glass as the outer layer. The influences of coating composition and preparation technology on the microstructure and anti-ablative properties of the coating are studied, and the ablation mechanism is analyzed. Under the ablation conditions in this paper, a dense oxide layer is formed on the surface layer of the coating, which is mainly composed of SiO2 glass phase and mixed with some oxide ceramic particles, such as ZrO2 and ZrSiO4. Because the oxygen diffusion coefficient of SiO2 glass is very low, the oxide layer can play a good role in oxygen resistance and inhibit the continuous oxidation of the coating. Finally, it is proved that the addition of dispersant tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) can improve the stability and fluidity of the slurry, which provides an important prerequisite for the uniformity of composition and thickness of the coating obtained by slurry sintering.

Abstract:This paper reports a simple and energy saving method to prepare ceramic particulate reinforced MMC coating via SHS. By this method, TiC reinforced Cu/Ni based MMC coating was produced on a steel substrate. No pores or micro cracks were found in the coating, and fine TiC particles were uniformly distributed in the metal matrix. A strong metallurgical bonding was achieved at the interface between the MMC coating and the steel substrate.

Abstract:The ceramic coating was prepared on steel plate by combustion synthesis method. The coating was investigated by means of XRD, SEM, EDS, micro-hardness measure and thermal shock resistance test. The microstructure and phase composition analyses on the synthesized sample show that the coating is a multiphase composite system consisting of, TiC, and alpha-Fe. The surface of coating is even and the interface of coating is metallurgical bonding. The micro-hardness of the coating is about 4 times higher than that of the substrate. The results of thermal shock resistance test show that the coating is of good bonding strength.
Performance Study of TiC Ceramic Coating on Aluminum Alloy Prepared by SHS+HP

Abstract:For improving the anti-bullet property of the aluminum alloy armor,TiC ceramic coating on 7A52 aluminum alloy is prepared by combining Hot Pressing(HP) with Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis(SHS).The morphology,phase structure,microhardness and anti-bullet property of the samples are analyzed and tested.The results show that the ceramic coating on aluminum alloy has the characteristics of high hardness,good toughness and compact texture.And the ceramic coating can significantly improve the anti-bullet property of the 7A52 aluminum alloy,which has the very high application value.

Abstract:Using the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) technology, the procedure and mechanism of reactive flame spraying TiC-TiB_2 multiphase ceramic coatings with Ti-B_4C-C system were studied by means of water quenching method. The results show that different reaction and change take place at different spraying distance, there exist competition of various reactions in the particles, and as a result multiphase ceramic particles can be got. At the optimal spraying distance 180mm, the agglomerated particles have the fullest melts, the final products are the best, and the most quantities of spheroid particles (ceramics droplets) are formed. The formed process of the ceramics liquid drop is that the SHS reaction begin with the melting of Ti powders, and then the space among the B_4C and C powders is wet and permeated by the liquid Ti through the diffusion and capillary mechanism, pass by the energy backlog, finally the SHS deflagration is completed. When water quenching takes place, the liquid particles will be crystal with pillar crystal way and form knitting wool ball shape. The structure of the ceramics droplets can be described by slag regular solution model.

Abstract:Alumina coating was prepared on plane carbon steels (A3) substrates by static combustion synthesizing technology. The microstructure, phase composition and the banding interface between coating and matrix were observed and investigated. The results showed that the coating consists of alpha-Al2O3 matrix, FeAl2O4 (FeO.Al2O3) spinel and Fe2SiO4 (2FeO.SiO2) fayalite. In the conditions of the investigation (static and no pressure), the coating was a cast coating. The result of thermal cycling test showed that the coating has good bonding strength with matrix. This investigation provided an approach to synthesis ceramic coating by static combustion synthesis.

Abstract:A kind of ceramic-lined stainless steel nozzle is produced by the static self-propagating high-temperature syntheses (SHS) process with the Al-Fe2O3-CrO3 combustion system. This technique is stable. The ceramic-lined layer is compact with uniform thickness and reliable performance. The combustion mechanism of the combustion system and the factors influencing the syntheses process are studied by experimentation. The X-ray diffraction result shows that the composition of the ceramic layer is very complex, which verifies that the oxidation-reduction reaction, accompanied with a series of metallurgical processes in the static SHS, is incomplete and unbalanced. An additive is developed, which significantly improves the mechanical properties of the ceramic-lined layer and its surface quality.

Abstract:Ceramic lining coating was prepared on the inside sur-faces of composite pipes by gravitational separation self-propaga-ting high - temperature synthesis ( SHS) with (Al-Fe2 O3 - CuO) plus SiO2 as the aluminothermic reactants, aiming at increasing the compactness and hardness of the lining and broaden its appli-cation scope. The effect of nano SiC additive on the phase compo-sition of the ceramic coating was investigated by means of X - ray diffraction. It was found that the ceramic coating was mainly com-posed of a - A12O3 and contained a small amount of hercynite FeAl2O4, sillimanite Al2SiO5, and SiC. SiC added in the react-ant system retained its phase structure after high-temperature syn-thesis, and it was able to effectively prevent matrix grains from growth and abnormal growing up, hence increasing the hardness and compactness of the ceramic lining coating.

Abstract:Two types of ceramic coatings with aluminum phosphate and water glass respectively as binder were prepared on Q235 steel using the same composition of aggregate (SiO 2 + Al) and additive (MgO + CrO 3) by the same curing process.The phase composition,microscopic morphology,thermal shock resistance,and corrosion resistance of the ceramic coatings were tested,and the effects of different binders on corrosion resistance were compared.The results showed that although some holes are formed on its surface during curing process,the ceramic coating prepared with aluminum phosphate as binder has better resistance to thermal shock,acid,alkali,and salt than that prepared with water glass as binder.

Abstract:The steel matrix (SHS-free) coating and its composite (SHS-produced) coating reinforced by multiple ceramic particulates were developed by plasma transferred arc (PTA) overlay welding. 5% and 10% weight percentages of mixtures of aluminum (Al), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and boron oxide (B2O3) powders by sequence weight ratio of 9:8:7 were used as precursors. Aluminothermic reduction of these oxides, being highly exothermic in nature, essentially leads to a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) of multiple ceramic particulate reinforced steel matrix composite coatings. Composite coatings have been subsequently characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) attachment, transmission electron microscope (TEM), nanoindentation, and sliding wear measurement. The results show that the hypoeutectic microstructure exists in the steel matrix coating where it consists of γ(Fe, Ni), M7C3, and (Fe, Cr)2B phases. Adding mixtures of Al–TiO2–B2O3 by sequence weight ratio of 9:8:7 changes its microstructure into pseudoeutectic characteristic whose crystal growth is cell dendrite in 5% SHS-produced coating but dendrite in 10% SHS-produced coating. Not only the metastable Al2O3 with nanometer and TiB2, but the TiB and TiC can be formed in the SHS-produced coating, except for those phases that existed in the steel matrix coating. Hardness and sliding wear resistance of the SHS-produced coatings increase in comparison with that of the steel matrix coating. The best sliding wear resistance can be obtained in the 5% SHS-produced coating for its high ratio of hardness to elastic modulus.

Abstract:The high density TiC/Fe ceramic coating was produced by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method combined with pseudo hot iso-static pressing.The wear-resistant properties were examined by means of ball-on-disk wear tester.The microstructure of TiC/Fe ceramic coating was investigated.The results showed that TiC/Fe ceramic exhibits an excellent wear-resistant property.There is little weight loss after 40 min wear test under 30 N load and dry sliding condition.The main wear mechanism can be described by the following stages:sticking friction.abrasion and stripping of hard phase.

Abstract:Abstract.This research focuses on the development of effective protective coatings for carbon-carbon composite materials (CCСM), which are important components in high-temperature processes in aerospace engineering. The application of CCСM is limited by their sensitivity to oxidation, erosion and burnout in gas streams. In light of these limitations, our work is aimed at creating protective coatings using the method of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis, which provide increased performance and extend the service life of composites. The main task of the research is to identify the optimal compositions of powders for chromium-doped protective coatings through the SHS process. Various methods of obtaining protective coatings were analyzed, including chemical-thermal methods and methods of saturation from the liquid phase, revealing the peculiarities of the interaction of coatings with the CCСM matrix and changes in their mechanical characteristics. In addition to the classical methods of obtaining coatings, the method of surface saturation from the solid phase in an active gas environment as part of the SHS process was investigated. This method provides high-quality coating surfaces, reduction of processing time and the possibility of reaching high temperatures, depending on the composition of the SHS mixture. An important element of the research is the analysis of modern publications and research in the field of protective coatings. Special attention is paid to the problems associated with chemical interaction with the matrix of CCСM and uneven formation of carbide phases along the cross-section of the material. Experimental studies include a factorial experiment to identify the compositions of powder mixtures that provide high wear resistance. Various independent variables, such as chromium, silicon, titanium and aluminum content, are considered for their effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the coatings. The study focuses on the optimization of the parameters of thermal autoinitiation of SHS mixtures under process conditions. The regression equation for evaluating the dependences of the wear resistance of coatings on auto-initiation parameters and the content of alloying elements is given. The analysis of the research results includes the construction of three-dimensional graphic dependencies to optimize the wear resistance of coatings in the Cr-Al-Ti and Cr-Al-Si systems. Chromoalumosilicization of the coating showed better wear resistance, exceeding the wear resistance of untreated samples by 2.6-3.2 times, which allows the use of this technology for parts of aerospace equipment. It is interesting that the porous surface of coatings obtained by the SHS method prevents the penetration of oxygen into the material, contributing to the formation of oxide protective membranes, such as SiO2, TiO2, Cr2O3, Al2O3.

Abstract:A double-layer γ-Y2Si2O7/Y2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 glass coating on porous Si3N4 ceramic was fabricated by melt-infiltration/sintering (MIS) method, and its thermal shock behavior was investigated by rapid quenching thermal shock tests and transient finite element simulation method. Coupling effects of coating microstructure and mechanical properties on the thermal shock behavior were discussed. Results show that thickness of the bonding layer and Young's modulus of the surface layer play a decisive role in thermal stress during the thermal shock process. The coating with lower Young's modulus and thicker bonding layer shows better comprehensive performance.

Abstract:In this study, Ti–Si–C composite coatings were synthesized via plasma spraying of agglomerated powders prepared by a spray drying/precursor pyrolysis technology using Ti, Si, and sucrose powders. The influence of Si content, ranging from 0 wt% to 24 wt%, on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance of the composite coatings was investigated. Results show that the phase composition of the Ti–Si–C composite coatings changes with the increasing Si content. The coatings without Si addition consist of TiC and Ti3O; the coatings with 6–18 wt% Si are composed of TiC, Ti5Si3, and Ti3O; the coatings with Si content of 24 wt% form only TiC and Ti5Si3 phases. As the Si content increases, the hardness of the Ti–Si–C composite coatings increases first and then decreases, depending on the intrinsic hardness of the ceramic phases, the brittleness of Ti5Si3, and the defects such as pores and cracks. The Ti–Si–C composite coatings have high wear resistance due to the in-situ synthesized high-hardness TiC and Ti5Si3. Owing to the high brittleness of Ti5Si3, the increasing Si content leads to higher wear volume loss at room temperature, which can be partially improved in high-temperature wear tests. The oxidation resistance of Ti–Si–C composite coatings increases with the increase of Si content, and the higher the oxidation temperature, the more obvious the influence of the Si addition on oxidation resistance.

Abstract:Due to the poor high temperature resistance of Ti alloy,ceramic coatings with the main crystalline of Al2TiO5 were prepared on TC4 alloy in NaAlO2solution by pulsed bi-polar microarc oxidation technique.And the effects of high temperature oxidation at 1000 ℃ on composition,structure and the weight gains of ceramic coatings were investigated.The results showed that the oxidation process of the ceramic coatings included the decomposition of Al2TiO5,the oxidation of the substrate and the changes of the coating morphology.After high oxidation,the main crystalline of the coating became α-Al2O3 and rutile TiO2 from Al2TiO5,and the surface morphology of the coatings changed greatly.Because of the different heat expansion coefficients between the substrate and the coating and the oxidation of the substrate in itself,the coatings cracked and separated from the substrate during the cooling process.Compared with the substrate,the ceramic coatings greatly decreased the weight gains of the TC4 alloy under the high temperature oxidation of 1000℃.Therefore,the ceramic coatings may be used as a kind of isothermal oxidation resistance coating in practice.

Abstract:TiB2-TiC ceramic coating was fabricated by wire-arc deposition of Ti-B4C cored wire in conjunction with self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) technology, to enhance the hardness and wear resistance of Ti. Results showed that a periodic combustion reaction, triggered by the capillary infiltration of molten Ti sheath into the inside B4C particles, occurred as the wire entered the arc zone. During combustion reaction, B4C experienced the course of dissolution as well as the transformation of decarbonization expressed as B4C→B13C2→B13Cx(1.27<x<2.00)< sub="">. In particular, the loss of C was more notable at combustion front region. The as-synthesized coating exhibited ultralow porosity thanks to the elevated adiabatic temperature, and possessed gradient microstructures formed due to the dissolution-precipitation mechanism. Mechanical and tribological tests showed that the coating had ultrahigh microhardness (2140 HV0.5, close to theorical value) and low wear rate (5.5×10−3 mm−3 min-1·N-1). The superior performance was attributed to ultralow porosity and high-strength coherent TiB2/TiC interface.</x<2.00)<>
