Abstract:A long-range ordered lamellae-within-lamellae hierarchical structure is reported for the first time through the directed self-assembly of supramolecular polymer-surfactant thin films on chemical patterns with density multiplication. The coassembly of supramolecular system with gold nanoparticles is further achieved to create a hybrid material with well-organized nanoparticle arrays, expanding the palette of morphologies and structures available for nanoscale fabrication. Abstract:Self-assembled films have been extensively concerned in recent years.As a very important organic assembling materials,(poly)siloxane has been widely used for preparation of self-assembled films.The important results of assembled films prepared by(poly)siloxane in recent years are summarized.The assembly mechanism and app-lications in fine sensors,surface treatment,protein adsorption control and disease monitoring,tribology and superhydrophobic surface of the films are reviewed.Finally,the development trends and application prospect of the films are also given.

Abstract:An ordered self-organizing film of amphiphilic polymer composed of hydrophilic ethyldiamine−epichlorohydrin slightly cross-linking networks and hydrophobic stearoyl side chains was fabricated by slow evaporation of organic solvents. The self-assembling film has a well-ordered, partially interdigitated layer structure which is different from that of the bulk material confirmed by X-ray diffraction, polarized ATR-IR spectra, and DSC.

Abstract:Self-assembly is well-known to occur in amphiphiles, and the totally hydrophobic ones are never reported to self-assemble. In this work we report for the first time that the latter can self-assemble into free-standing sheets and hollow spheres in toluene/methanol mixed solvents by modulating the solvent quality. The homopolymers studied in this work are polystyrene (PS), polyphenylacetylene (PPA), and poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT), representing polymers with different rigidity. All the three form a homogenous solution in toluene, but self-assembly occurs in the toluene/methanol mixed solvents. Micrometer sized free-standing sheets were formed for PS, PPA, and P3HT at methanol volume fractions being 43%, 50%, and 67%, respectively, and hollow spheres were observed for PPA at higher methanol fractions of 75 and 90%. Under the latter solvent conditions, PS forms solid spheres, yet ill-defined aggregates and free-standing sheets coexist in the case of P3HT. This non-solvent induced self-assembly was explained by a delicate balance of two "opposing forces": van der Waals attractive and entropic repulsive forces generated between the segments of these homopolymers within a single chain, between two chains, and among more chains in the solvents of worsened quality.

Abstract:A series of amphiphilic polymers are designed and synthesized, which are composed of hydrophilic microgels and hydrophobic long chains. They demonstrate various organization behaviors at interface, and form layered structure of so called reversed duckweed. It is found that the lightly crosslinking network is flexible enough to facilitate a high order in thin film fabrication. In addition, this film can be used as matrix for functional assembly. Abstract:Polymeric thin films have been prepared by solventless processes that are particularly suitable for building block copolymers into multilayer films (see Figure for an optical image of a two-layer film, scale bar = 50 μm). Using this method, the detrimental effects that a solvent may sometimes have when preparing a film can be avoided.

Abstract:Owing to the high electronegativity of fluorine atoms, incorporation of fluorinated moieties in a polymer can confer unique properties such as low surface energy and self-assembling ability in solution. In this study, a series of amphiphilic copolymers were prepared by radical polymerization using three monomers: 2-((2,3,3,3- tetrafluoro- 2- (1,1,2,3,3,3- hexafluoro −2- (perfluoroethoxy) propoxy) propanoyl)oxy) ethyl acrylate (FHEMA), maleic anhydride (MAH), and acrylic acid (AA). The PFHEMA block provided low surface tension, and the MAH and AA blocks (containing carboxyl) increased solubility. The properties of the polymer (PFHEMA-co-PMAH-co-PAA) can be regulated by changing the PFHEMA length. Characterization by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) indicated successful polymerization (FHA01 and FHA02). When the FHEMA/MAH/AA molar ratio was 3:8:9 (FAA02), the surface tension of the hydrolyzed amphiphilic copolymers FAA02 at 300 mg·mL −1 in aqueous solution was 15.76 mN·m −1 , the lowest value due to a higher fluorine content than FAA01. FAA02 self-assembled in water to form pH-sensitive micelles with diameters greater than 140 nm. For the FAA02 film, both the F/C ratio and arrangement of fluorine-containing side chains decreased with increasing film depth. Thus, this type of fluorine-containing low surface free energy material can be developed into a high performance coating material.

Abstract:Directed self-assembly of block copolymers has arouse tremendous interest from academy and industry as a bottom-up patterning process to fabricate versatile nanostructures. However, the underlying principles between molecular parameters and defectivities in directed self-assembly are still unambiguous due to the limitations of traditional polydisperse polymer models. Discrete polymer with defined molecular structure and uniform chain length are ideal candidates to reveal the fundamental principles. In this study, based on the modular synthesis strategy, discrete fluorine-containing polyester block copolymers (oLA(n)-FPOSS) with high chi-low N were firstly prepared by iterative exponential growth in combination with the thiol-ene click reaction. Owing to the discrete feature, the influence of polydisperse molecular parameters including composition, molecular weight and distribution on self-assembly behaviors can be completely excluded. Consequently, the impacts of molecular structures on the evolution of phase segregation can be quantitatively revealed. Due to the strong segregation strength, hexagonally packed cylindrical nanostructures (HEX) less than 10 nm can be formed in bulk and the phase stability increases with the chain length of oLA block. In thin-film self-assembly, parallelly oriented cylindrical nanopatterns on Si substrate were clearly identified after brief annealing under vacuum. In addition, through comparative studies of thin-film self-assembly behaviors of discrete block copolymers with different chain lengths, the nanopattern defectivity decreased significantly with the increase of oLA block chain length, which initially revealed the dependence of defect formation on block copolymer chain length in thin-film self-assembly.

Abstract:A new kind of amphiphilic polymer was synthesized. Its center core was N-vinyl-2-Pyrrolidone/beta-hydroxyethyl (VPy-HMA) hydrophilic microgel and the arms on the core were hydrophobic PSt chains. It was found that this amphiphilic polymer could be reformed into monolayers of "reversed duckweed" type on the air-water interface, and its Langmuir Blodgett films had a good laminar structure.

Abstract:We report the synthesis, characterization, and solvent-induced structure formation in thin films of an amphiphilic rod-coil conjugated block copolymer, poly(3-hexylthiophene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide). The diblock copolymers were prepared by a facile click reaction and their characterizations as well as thermal, crystalline, optical properties, and self-assembly behavior have been investigated in detail. A series of morphologies including two-phase separated nanostructure, nanofibrils, and their mixed morphology could be obtained depending on the selectivity of solvents to different blocks. Structural analyses demonstrate there is a subtle balance between microphase separation of copolymer and the p-p stacking of the conjugated P3HT and such balance can be controlled by changing the solvents of different selectivity in solution and the length of P3HT block. Abstract:Hierarchical lamellae self-assembled from linear multiblock copolymers in thin films are investigated by self-consistent field theory. The thin films are confined between two parallel substrates. The confinement strategy allows generating hierarchical microstructures with various numbers and different orientations of small-length-scale lamellae. Effects of film thickness and surface affinity on the structures are studied. It is found that not only the period of the large-and small-length-scale lamellae but also the orientation of small-length-scale lamellae relative to large-length-scale lamellae can be tuned by varying the film thickness. Moreover, the structures of the hierarchical lamellae can be tailored by changing the surface affinity. Through analyzing free energies of various lamellae, phase diagrams are mapped out. The present work could provide guidance for fabricating hierarchical microstructures in a controllable way.

Abstract:An ultrathin film with forth generation poly (aminoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers (methyl quaternary ammonium salt) as polycation and poly (sodium p-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) as polyainon was fabricated via sequential deposition. It shows that the step-by-step depositions carried out smoothly by monitoring with UV-Vis spectrometer. The multilayer film is rather flat with a mean roughness of 0.39 nm determined by AFM. The average thickness of a bilayer is 5.0 nm obtained from XRD, which indicates that the dendrimers molecules were compressed and possess high flattening.

Abstract:A new type of polymeric LB film named “Reversed Duckweed” type LB film was fabricated by use of a new kind of amphiphilic polymer which was composed of a flexible hydrophilic epichlorohydrinethylene diamine crosslinking microgels and several hydrophobic stearic chains. It had highly ordered structure, including a well ordered layer structure and highly oriented hydrophobic alkyl chains in each layer, which was confirmed by low angle X-ray diffraction and polarized FTIR-ATR experiment.

Abstract:A novel alternant amphiphilic polymer poly[1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)-2,5-bis(hexyloxy)benzene-alt-tetra(ethylene oxide)] was prepared. Atom force microscope (AFM) images showed that the molecular self-assembly morphologies changed from molecular nanowires to twist fibrillar architectures with the increase of the solution concentrations. Short and thin wires formed in dilute solution, while large bundles developed in relatively concentrated ones, shown by fluorescence microscope images. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the corresponding films indicate a self-assembly process of the polymers under slow solvents evaporation. Coplanar aggregation was confirmed through PL and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra. Furthermore, the self-assembly process in polymer bulk was studied by wide-angle X-ray diffraction. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to reveal the change of the molecular morphologies with the altering concentration for the alternant amphiphilic conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Polymer self-assembly has been a hot research topic for several decades. Different types of polymers with various architectures, like block copolymers, brush polymers, hyperbranched polymers and dendrimers, etc., are currently being investigated. Alternating copolymers (ACPs) are regular copolymers with an alternating monomeric unit structure in the polymer backbones. However, despite the great progress in the synthesis of ACPs, their self-assembly is still in an infant stage. Very recently, our group reported a new type of amphiphilic ACPs through click copolymerization and obtained spheres, vesicles, nanotubes, and even hierarchical sea urchin-like aggregates through the self-assembly process. In addition, we have found some intriguing features in the self-assembly of amphiphilic ACPs when compared with other copolymers, including their facile syntheses, readily functionalization, novel self-assembly structures, new folding-chain mechanisms, and uniform but ultrathin feature length. In this Concept article, we present the self-assembly of amphiphilic ACPs together with their unique features by reviewing our latest results and related studies. Moreover, the future perspective on the self-assembly of amphiphilic ACPs is also proposed. Our aim is to capture the attention and interest of chemists in this new area of polymerization.

Abstract:A new synthetic approach for the formation of ultrathin polymer films with customizable properties was developed. In this approach, the kinematic nature of proton collisions with simple organic molecules condensed on a substrate is exploited to break C-H bonds preferentially. The subsequent recombination of carbon radicals gives a cross-linked polymer thin film, and the selectivity of C-H cleavage preserves the chemical functionalities of the precursor molecules. The nature and validity of the method are exemplified with theoretical results from ab initio molecular dynamics calculations and experimental evidence from a variety of characterization techniques. Its applicability is demonstrated by the synthesis of ultrathin polymer films with precursor molecules such as dotriacontane, docosanoic acid, poly(acrylic acid) oligomer, and polyisoprene. The approach is fundamentally different from conventional chemical synthesis as it involves an unusual mix of physical and chemical processes including charge exchange, projectile penetration, kinematics, collision-induced dissociation, inelastic energy transfer, chain transfer, and chain cross-linking.

Abstract:Hierarchical microstructures self-assembled from A(BC)(n) multiblock copolymers confined between two solid surfaces were explored by dissipative particle, dynamics simulations. The strategy using confinement allows us to generate hierarchical microstructures with various numbers and different orientations of small-length-scale lamellae. Except for the hierarchical lamellar microstructures with parallel or perpendicular arrangements of small-length-scale lamellae, the coexistence of two different hierarchical lamellae was also discovered by varying the film thickness. The dynamics of hierarchical microstructure formation was further examined. It was found that the formation of the hierarchical microstructures exhibits a stepwise manner where the formation of small-length-scale structures lags behind that of large-length-scale structures. The present work could provide guidance for controllable manufacture of hierarchical microstructures.

Abstract:The self-assembly behavior of specifically designed giant surfactants are systematically studied in thin films using grazing incidence X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy, focusing on the effects of molecular nanoparticles (MNPs) functionalities and molecular architectures on nanostructure formation. Two MNPs with different surface functionalities, i.e., hydrophilic carboxylic acid functionalized [60]fullerene (AC60) and omniphobic fluorinated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (FPOSS), are utilized as the head portions of the giant surfactants. By covalently tethering these functional MNPs onto the endpoint or junction point of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) diblock copolymer, linear and star-like giant surfactants with different molecular architectures are constructed. With fixed length of the PEO block, changing the molecular weight of the PS block leads to the formation of various ordered phases and phase transitions. Due to the distinct affinity, the AC60-based and FPOSS-based giant surfactants form two- or three-component morphologies, respectively. A stretching parameter for the PS block is introduced to characterize the PS chain conformation in the different morphologies. The highly diverse self-assembled nanostructures with high etch resistance between components in small dimensions obtained from the giant surfactant thin films suggest that these macromolecules could provide a promising and robust platform for nanolithography applications.

Abstract:A novel fluorinated diblock tercopolymer was synthesized by the reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer method, incorporating methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate, and perfluoroalkyl ethyl methylacrylate blocks as hydrophilic, lipophilic, and fluorophilic units, respectively. Depending upon the specific triphilic balance, under control solution conditions, the block copolymer self-assembled in dimethylformamide/water dispersions induced an evolution from spheres to wormlike structures, and finally to novel nail-shaped structures, as verified by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The control mechanism is explained in terms of the effect of each property on the forces that govern the formation of any given morphology, namely the core-chain stretching, strong incompatibility between the lipophilic blocks and the fluorophilic blocks, and interfacial tension.
