Abstract:The effects of copolymer composition, copolymer composition distribution, and polar alpha-olefin incorporation on transparency, refractive index, and hydrophilicity of resultant ethylene-norbornene copolymer films were investigated. It has been found that the transparency is mainly determined by the copolymer composition distribution. The samples having uniform compositions gave better transparency. However, the copolymer composition distribution had little effect on refractive index. The refractive index increased linearly with increasing norbornene content. Furthermore, the incorporation of polar alpha-olefin with long carbon chain improved refractive index and hydrophilicity of the films. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:But-3-en-1-ol has been pre-protected by triisobutylaluminium and terpolymerized with ethylene and norbornene by rac-[Et(Ind)(2)]ZrCl2/MAO catalysts. The strong polarity of diisobutyl(but-3-en-1-oxy)aluminum causes a slight reduction in the catalyst activity and yields a small fraction of crystallinity. The but-3-en-1-ol content in the terpolymer is as high as 3.2% and can be readily adjusted by varying the reaction conditions. When the norbornene/ethylene ratio is over 10, the norbornene incorporation efficiency is not affected by the polar monomer and is close to that of the copolymerization. Similar to the ethylene/norbornene copolymers, the thermal properties of the obtained terpolymers are mainly determined by their norbornene contents.

Abstract:Carboxyl-terminated polynorbornenes (CTPNB) have been prepared via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) catalyzed by Grubbs II catalyst (G2) in the presence of maleic acid (MA) as a chain transfer agent (CTA). The influences of reaction conditions on the molecular weight of products, including molar ratios of C=C/G2, C=C/CTA and amount of solvent were investigated. The results indicated that the molecular weight of CTPNBs could be controlled by varying the molar ratio of C=C/G2or C=C/CTA. In addition, norbornene (NB) was copolymerized with cyclooctene (COE) in order to obtain carboxyl-terminated copolymers via chain-transfer ROMP. The unsaturated carboxyl-terminated (co)polymers were further hydrogenated by usingp-toluenesulfonyl hydrazide/tri-n-propylamine reagents. The structures of polymers were characterized by FT-IR, NMR and MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, and their thermal properties were determined by DSC and TGA.
Model Development for Semicontinuous Production of Ethylene and Norbornene Copolymers Having Uniform Composition

Abstract:Terminal and penultimate models for controlling copolymer composition distribution (CCD) in ethylene and norbornene (NB) copolymerization were developed by taking into account the variation of active site concentration with the initial comonomer ratio. The models were validated by batch polymerization experimental data. The terminal model gave better correlation with the composition data whereas the penultimate model had a better fit to the rate data. The terminal model was then used to design NB feeding policies in semicontinuous processes for targeted CCD profiles. Based on the model results, a series of ethylene-NB copolymers with various NB contents were prepared. With the same NB content, the semicontinuous process produced a uniform composition, whereas the batch process yielded broad CCD. The batch samples had lower T, values and broader transition ranges, even yielded crystalline materials. In contrast, the semicontinuous samples overcame the disadvantages. Abstract:A series of nickel and palladium complexes bearing (imino)pyridyl alcohol tridentate [N,N,O] ligands, 2-(ArNCMe)-6-{(HO)CR2}C5H3N (L1–L4), were synthesized and sufficiently characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis along with X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray diffraction demonstrated that five-coordinated nickel halide complexes (1a–4a and 1b) and six-coordinated nickel acetate complex (1c) were prepared, and cationic palladium complexes (1d and 2d) formed with the [PdCl4]2− counterion. All these complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 1.883 × 107 g(PNB) mol−1(cat) h−1 (2d) for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene on treatment with excess methylaluminoxane (MAO), affording the vinyl-type PNBs with high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The parameters of reaction conditions, the type of metals and steric effects of coordinative ligands had influences on the catalytic properties.

Abstract:A series of ethylene/l-octene random and block copolymer samples were synthesized via a living coordination polymerization catalyzed by bis[N-(3-methylsalicylidene) -2,3,4,5,6-pentafluoroanilinato] titanium(IV) dichloride/dMAO. The chain microstructures of the copolymers were elucidated by analytic TREF and DSC thermal fractionation techniques in this work. It was found that the living random copolymers possessed narrower intra-chain composition distributions than those prepared from conventional metallocene catalysts. With the same short chain branching content, the melting temperature of living random copolymer was about 16 C lower than metallocene-catalyzed random copolymer. The living block copolymers were also studied in comparison with the olefin multiblock copolymer (OBC) produced from chain shuttling polymerization. The interchain composition distribution of OBC was found broader than living block copolymers. However, the crystal thickness distribution of OBC was narrower. The diblock copolymer had a bimodal distribution in the crystal thickness and the step triblock copolymer showed a trimodal distribution, in contrast to OBC's single modal distribution. Abstract:The norbornene/ethylene copolymerization was investigated by using Me(2)SiCp(2)MtCl(2)(Mt = Zr, Ti)/MAO catalyst system. The copolymerization Kinetics was studied under different conditions. The copolymer was characterized by DSC and C-13-NMR methods. It was found the zirconocene has better catalyst ability for copolymerization of ethylene and norbornene than titanocene. Under similar feed ratio, the copolymers with high norbornene content and glass transition temperature were synthesized compared with literature.

Abstract:Using VO2+ as a spin probe, a new method to obtain microenvironmental information on supports was developed which can be used in the choice of supports for coordination catalysts. Utilizing the above method, NaY was chosen as second support component. A complex support catalyst VOCl3/MgCl2/NaY/Al(2)Et(3)Cl(3) was prepared and used in ethylene-propylene copolymerization. Higher polymerization activity was obtained with this catalytic system. Alternating the ratio of two kinds of supports, the composition and sequence structure of copolymers could be controlled, which showed that NaY participated in the active species, affected the insertion of monomer, and changed the composition and sequence structure of copolymers. Abstract:Norbornene polymerization and ethylene/norbornene copolymerization were studied using constrained geometry complexes 2-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-4,6-di-tert-butylphenoxytitanium dichloride (1), 2-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-6-tert-butylphenoxytitanium dichloride (2), and 2-(tetramethylcyclopentadienyl)-6-phenylphenoxytitanium dichloride (3) as catalysts with AliBu3 and Ph3CB(C6F5)4 as cocatalysts. Polymerization results indicate that these catalyst systems are highly active for both the homopolymerization of norbornene and the copolymerization of ethylene with norbornene. The norbornene homopolymerization is vinyl addition polymerization. Ethylene/norbornene copolymers with high norbornene incorporation (>50%) were easily obtained with these catalyst systems by increasing the norbornene feed concentration. The produced polymers were characterized by 13C NMR, IR, DSC and GPC.

Abstract:5-Ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) polymerization and copolymerization with ethylene (E) catalyzed by constrained geometry catalyst 2-tetramethylcyclopentadienyl-4,6-di-tert-butylphenoxytitanium dichloride (1) were studied in the presence of AliBu3 and Ph3CB(C6F5)4 (TIBA/B). The catalyst system shows moderate activity on the homopolymerization of ENB, and higher activity on the copolymerization of E/ENB under atmospheric pressure of ethylene. 1H NMR analysis indicates that ENB was regioselectively incorporated into the copolymer backbone through the endocyclic double bond, leaving the ethylidene double bond unreacted. The ethylidene group contained in the poly(E-co-ENB) was quantitatively converted to the epoxy group with m-chloroperbenzoic acid, producing functionalized poly(E-co-ENB)s. The parent and functionalized copolymers have been characterized using IR, NMR, DSC, and GPC techniques.

Abstract:Polymerization of norbornene has been promoted by a catalyst system composed of [2-methyl-8-(diphenylphosphino)quinoline]nickel dichloride and MAO. The catalytic system showed high activity (activity < 1.70 x 10(8) g-PNB/mol-Ni h) for vinyl addition type polymerization. The resultant polynorbornenes possessed high molecular weight (M-w < 2.08 x 10(6) g/mol) with wide molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n < 19.20), and were soluble, showing no crystallinity in the solid state. The catalytic activity, molecular weight as well as polydispersity of the resultant polymer can be controlled over a wide range by varying the reaction parameters. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Vinyl-addition polymerization of norbornene was accomplished by two novel dinuclear diimine nickel dichloride complexes in combination with methylaluminoxane (MAO). The activities were moderate. The catalyst structure, Al/Ni molar ratio, solvents, and polymerization temperature all affected the catalytic activities. The obtained polynorbornenes were characterized by H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR, FTIR, DSC, WAXD, and intrinsic viscosity measurements. The vinyl-addition polymers were amorphous but with a short-range order and high packing density. The polynorbornenes showed glass transition temperatures (T-g) above 240degreesC and decomposed above 400degreesC. The catalyst structure and polymerization conditions have effects on the molecular weight and the microstructure of the polymers. The nickel complex with bulkier substituents in the ligand produced polynorbornene with a higher packing density and higher regularity and, therefore, with higher T-g. Abstract:Since the highly active metallocene catalysts have successful opened up the possibility to synthesize norbornene-ethylene copolymer as a typical representative of the cyclic-olefins copolymer, copolymerization of norbornene with otherα-olefin such as propylene is also paid more attention by the academics and industries. In this paper, the research progress of norbornene and propylene copolymerization in recent years is briefly introduced, including the copolymerization characteristics catalyzed by a variety of different structures metallocene catalysts and the structure analysis of the resultant copolymers. For the C2-symmetric and Cs-symmetric metallocene catalyst, the chain transfer reaction of norbornene and propylene copolymerization leads to low catalytic activity and low molecular weight of the obtained products. With the contrained geometry metallocene ansa-dimethylsilylene(fluorenyl)(amido)dimethyltitanium-based derivatives catalyzing copolymerization of norbornene and propylene, catalytic activity can be up to 107 g polymer·(mol cat·h)?1, and the resulting copolymer with a molecular weight of more than 200000, a norbornene content of up to 70%(mol) and high glass transition temperature can be obtained.

Abstract:Ethylene-norbornene copolymers (ENC) with similar to 50%, similar to 25% and similar to 15% norbornene (NB) fraction in a wide range of molecular weight were produced by metallocene catalysts. By coupling the gel permeation chromatography (GPC) with the intrinsic viscosity data in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB)at 150 degrees C, the Mark-Houwink parameters of ENC were determined and compared with previous classical analysis using polyethylene's relative parameters. The results indicated that parameter K was considerably increased with decreasing NB fraction in ENC but parameter a was only increased slightly. Furthermore, the structure characteristics and correlative rheological parameters of resultant ENC were also calculated and discussed by the Stockmayer-Fixman analysis. Abstract:A 13C-NMR method is presented for a quantitative determination of the respective monomer composition and sequence distributions in ethylene-1-octene copolymers prepared with supported titanium/magnesium catalyst. On the basis of the sequence distributions, the ethylene-1-octene copolymerization mechanism was studied. It was found that the observed sequence distributions in ethylene-1-octene copolymers are satisfactorily predicted by the two-site model M/M, in which the copolymerization proceeds according to first-order Markovian statistics at the two different sites.

Abstract:Novel bridged dinuclear diimine nickel and palladium complexes catalyzed the vinyl addition polymerization of norbornene at a single active site with high activity. The latter exhibited higher activity than the former. Smaller substituents around the imido group in the ligand were more favorable for increasing the activity than bulkier ones. The polynorbornenes were all noncrystalline but had short‐range order and their glass transition temperature, Tg, ranged from 270 to 400 °C. Furthermore, the random copolymerization of norbornene and styrene was catalyzed by the bridged dinuclear diimine nickel complex with MAO (methylaluminoxane). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopies, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated that the copolymers are “true” copolymers. The reactivity ratios were rstyrene = 0.281, rnorbornene = 18.7. The packing density, thermostability and the glass transition temperatures of copolymers are increased relative to polystyrene. The solubility and processability of the copolymers are improved relative to polynorbornene. The structures of bridged dinuclear diimine nickel and palladium complexes. Abstract:To synthesis ethylene (E) and norbornene (NB) copolymer with high glass transition temperature and transparency, three metallocene catalysts with different symmetric structure were evaluated, respectively. The catalyst activity, NB fraction in copolymer and the transparency of copolymers produced under various conditions were investigated. It has been found that C-2 symmetric catalyst such as rac-[En(Ind)(2)]ZrCl2 was the best choice to produce copolymer with high NB fraction while keeping high catalyst activity. Furthermore, the effects of reaction conditions on activity of rac-[En(ind)(2)]ZrCl2 and the resultant copolymer structure have also been thoroughly studied. The results indicate that increasing the NB/E ratio is the effective way to increase NB content of copolymer when NB/E ratio is less than 20. However, when NB/E ratio is over 20, further increase in NB/E ratio will lead to significant lower catalyst activity and very limited increase in NB content of copolymer. Abstract:The recent discovery of homogeneous metallocene-based Ziegler-Natta catalysts has led to the synthesis of EP copolymers with new comonomer and stereochemical structures. In the present paper C-13 NMR investigation of EP copolymers at high ethylene content, prepared with highly isospecific, highly syndiospecific, and aspecific catalysts, is presented. The high stereoregularity of the iso- and syndiotactic samples and the complete regioregularity of all three samples greatly simplify the spectra and make it possible to check some of the chemical shift predictions and to perform other sequence assignments. The assignment of new sequences is based on (i) correlation of chemical shifts of homo- and copolymers performed with the same catalysts, (ii) comparison of spectral intensities for samples of different compositions, and (iii) comparison with chemical shift values predicted by calculations. The detailed information obtained on comonomer and tactic sequences opens the possibility of describing the chain growth mechanism for the various catalytic systems and of correlating chain structure and copolymer physical and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Picolyl, pyridine, and methyl functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene iridium complexes [Cp*Ir(CN)Cl]Cl (4, CN = 3-Methyl-1-picolyimidazol-2-ylidene), [Cp*Ir(CN)Cl][Cp*IrCl3] (5), [Cp*Ir(C-N)Cl]Cl (6, C-N = 3-Methyl-1-pyridylimidazol-2-ylidene) and [Cp*Ir(L)Cl-2] (7, L = 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) have been synthesized by transmetallation from Ag(I) carbene species, and characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR spectra and elemental analyses. The molecular structures of 5-7 have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses. The iridium carbene complexes 4 and 6 show moderate catalytic activities (3.03 x 10(5) g PNB (mol Ir) (1)h (1) and 1.70 x 10(6) g PNB (mol Ir) (1) h (1)) for the addition polymerization of norbornene in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO) as co-catalyst. The produced polynorbornene have been characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectra, showing it follows the vinyl-addition-type of polymerization.

Abstract:A ternary catalytic system consisting of a bis(phenoxyimine) titanium complex, triisobutylaluminium and an organoboron compound exhibited high activity in the vinyl-type homopolymerization of norbornene. The obtained polynorbornene showed a modest molecular weight (M-n approximate to 5 x 10(4) g mol(-1)) and broad molecular weight distribution (polydispersity index approximate to 3.5). A copolymer of norbornene with 1,3-butadiene was prepared using a binary catalytic system consisting of bis(phenoxyimine) titanium complex and triisobutylaluminium. The norbornene units in the copolymer adopted a vinyl-type addition structure confirmed using distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer 135 C-13 NMR microstructure analyses. Polymerization kinetics studies showed that neither monomer feed ratio nor conversion had an effect on the composition of the copolymer backbone which was composed of 55% norbornene units and 45% 1,3-butadiene units. The essentially constant polymer composition implied an alternating nature of chain propagation. The copolymer exhibited good thermal stability and moderate glass transition temperature (50.9-68.2 degrees C) with a relatively high molecular weight (M-w = 0.18 x 10-1.31 x 10(5) g mol(-1)), and excellent transparency (maximal transmittance >80%).
