Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) is a conductive polymer with simple synthesis, low cost, environmental friendliness and high electrochemical activity. It is widely used as an electrode material in supercapacitors. However, during the charge-discharge cycle, the expansion and contraction of the volume of PANI caused by doping and de-doping of anions often leads to a decline of rate performance and cycle stability. In this paper, four kinds of acid doped PANI electrodes were prepared by electrochemical deposition on the surface of carbon cloth. The type of acids has a significant impact on the final electrochemical performance of PANI. Phytic acid (PA) doped PANI exhibits the best electrochemical performance with a high specific capacitance of 363.6 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and the retention rate of at 20 A g-1 is 91.3%. In addition, the introduction of 0.1wt% polyvinyl alcohol into electrolyte can greatly increase the load of electrochemical active substances without affecting the electrochemical performance of electrode materials.

Abstract:An all-solid-state ammonium ion-selective electrode, with silver/nano-silver wire as the substrate, polyaniline as transducer and poly (o-phenylenediamine) as sensitive membrane, is presented. The nano-silver was prepared by electrodeposition in 0.1 M AgNO3 standard solution with the half-sine wave at amplitude of 500 mV, frequency of 50 HZ and action time of 1 min. The polyaniline and poly (o-phenylenediamine) were electropolymerized on the surface of the silver/nano-silver substrate by cyclic voltammetry with the scanning potential from 0 to 0.45 V in solutions of 1.0 M aniline hydrochloride and 0.08 M o-phenylenediamine hydrochloride, respectively. Under the SEM, poly (o-phenylenediamine) with 0.5-5 mu m in size was evenly and firmly embedded on the surface of the PANI. This ammonium electrode exhibited low impedance of approximately 70 Ohm. It can detect as low as 1.2 x10(-5) M of ammonium ion, with the slopes of 54.99-55.70 mV per decade (R-2>0.99) within a linear range between 2 x 10(-5) M to 0.1 M. It responds as quickly as 0.5-2 s, as well as its lifespan extends to at least 147 days. The electrode showed a superior selectivity toward NH4+, and was successfully applied to detect the NH4+ concentration in real samples. In addition, this electrode is miniature and convenient for package and assembly, which will enable in-situ measurement and long-term monitoring of NH4+ concentration in rivers, lakes and industrial sewage.

Abstract:Flow injection amperometry provides an opportunity to avoid common drawbacks of classical potentiometry for solid-contact ion-selective electrodes. The current is generated by solid-contact in course of the polymer chain recharging in response to an excess of cations or anions in the polymer film. Cations cause cathodic peaks on the chronoamperogram, while anions result in anodic peaks. For polyaniline with negatively charged substituents, a response to cations is observed, whereas the presence of uncharged ones results in anion detection. Moreover, in the case of the protonated –SO 3 H group, this compensating current is an order of magnitude lower than that for the deprotonated one. For electroactive self-doped polyanilines, the maximal amperometric signal is achieved at the working potential within the electroactivity range. The proposed constant potential amperometric approach was validated by the successful analysis of human serum with a Na + -selective electrode based on polyaniline.

Abstract:In this work, a promising electrochemical detector has been fabricated by immersing a glass carbon electrode (GCE) in aniline containing novel ionic liquid and scanning between -1.0 and 1.0 V for 40 cycles, and was used in ion chromatography (IC) system. The morphology of the modified electrode surface was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The polyaniline (PANI) film showed excellent electrocatalytic activity than bare GCE and provided enhanced selectivity and stability for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA). Separated by IC with phosphate buffer solution (pH = 5.2) as eluent, AA could be determined by the PANI/GCE successfully at the working potential of 0.3 V. The retention time of AA was approximately 5.75 min, and the peak shape of AA was satisfactory. The calibration curve of AA was linear (r > 0.99), in the range between 0.05 mg/L and 1000 mg/L and the detection limit was 23.41 μg/L (S/N = 3). The proposed method was successfully applied in the detection of AA in four beverage samples. The recoveries of AA in these samples were from 92.32% to 110.57%.

Abstract:The electrochemical redox system of polyaniline in non-aqueous medium, its electrical conduction mechanism, and application for rechargeable lithium battery are discussed referring to the results of structural analysis. Structural analysis on polyaniline 1A, doped 1A, base-treated doped 1A, and 1S was done by means of 13C NMR, XPS N1S and XPS valence spectroscopy.It was found that 1A consists solely of IP (imino-1,4-phenylene) unit, doped 1A consists of IP and IP.+ (its radical cation), base-treated doped 1A consists of IP and NP (nitrilo-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-diylidenenitrilo-1,4-phenylene), and 1S mostly consists of IP and IP+ (its cation). Only IP.+ plays an important role in electrical conduction of polyaniline, because it exhibits a finite density of state at Fermi energy.As for the electrode material of rechargeable lithium batteries, interconversion process between IP and IP.+ of polyaniline is significant. NP reduces the discharge capacity of polyaniline battery with non-aqueous electrolyte.

Abstract:In this paper, we successfully fabricated a novel bromide ion selective electrode (Br-ISE), which was coated by bromine ion doped polyaniline as sensitive film. Using Ag wire as the substrate, a uniform and dense nano-silver layer was electroplated to enhance the specific surface area of the electrode. Subsequently, a polyaniline (PANI) film was coated onto the electrode by cyclic voltammetry in a 0.3 M aniline and 1 M HCl solution and was in-situ doped by 0.1 M KBr solution. The morphology and performance of the electrode were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and other electrochemical analysis methods, respectively. The prepared Br-ISE exhibited a wide linear dynamic range between 1.0 × 10−1 and 1.0 × 10−7 M with a near-Nernst slope of 57.33 mV/decade. In addition, the electrode possessed extremely fast response time (<1 s) and low impedance (300 Ω), high sensitivity, and good selectivity. The electrode potential drifted within 2 mV in 8 h. The lifespan was larger than three months.

Abstract:Abstract Polyaniline, as a kind of conductive polymer with commercial application prospects, is still under researches in its synthesis and applications. In this work, polyaniline was fabricated on flexible substrates including carbon cloths and polyethylene naphthalate by in situ electropolymerization method. The synthesized flexible electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, High resolution transmission electron microscope, atomic force microscope, Fourier transform infrared, x-ray diffraction, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Owing to the conductivity and the reversible redox property, the polyaniline/carbon cloth electrodes show excellent properties such as decent supercapacitor performance and good detection capability toward ascorbic acid. As supercapacitors, the electrodes exhibit a specific capacitance as high as 776 F g –1 at a current density of 1 A g –1 and a long cycle life of 20 000 times in the three-electrode system. As ascorbic acid sensors, the flexible electrodes demonstrate stable response to ascorbic acid in the range of 1–3000 μ M with an outstanding sensitivity (4228 μ A mM –1 cm –2 ), low detection limit (1 μ M), and a fast response time. This work holds promise for high-performance and low-cost flexible electrodes for both supercapacitors and non-enzymatic ascorbic acid sensors, and may inspire inventions of self-powered electrochemical sensor.

Abstract:A pulse amperometric two-electrode ion detection system has been developed by using a solid contact ion-selective working electrode and an active carbon counter electrode. By applying pulse amerometric potential,current responses related to the concentration of the primary ions can be obtained for quantification. pH value,Ca2+and Cl-ions have been detected by using corresponding ion-selective electrode. It can be seen that, this detection system demonstrates good sensitivity and selectivity and are found to be less sensitive to electrical interferences compared to potentiometric ISE sensors. Moreover,with the advantages of maintenance-free and easy to miniaturization,this ion detection system turns out promising on water property monitoring in domestic applications.

Abstract:The slow voltammetry was taken on the paste electrode consisting of polyaniline powder and Teflon binder which was applied to pyrographite disc electrode. The potential cycle range was +0.6V→ − 0.2V→+0.8V→+0.6V vs. SCE. It was found that the voltammetry curves are similar for both polyanilines obtained chemically and electrochemically. The difference of the voltammetry curves in various acids might be attributed to some exchange of doping anions in polyaniline. The first redox couple peaks shifted to positive potential direction with increase of pH and it might be associated with the proton addition-elimination reaction. It was shown that polyaniline prepared from very dilute or concentrated acid solution was electrochemically inactive.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANI) conductive polymer is a unique energy storage electrode and sensor material. In this article, we report the use of electrochemistry as a quick and easy method to prepare PANI films, which are used as electrode materials to detect the selectivity to various acids. The sample was characterized and tested by XRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Various electrochemical parameters were measured and compared for various acids. As an electrode and sensor material, PANI film has different degrees of redox peaks for monobasic acid, dibasic acid, organic macromolecular acid, and inorganic acid. This type of sensor shows good repeatability and reproducibility, so this type of conductive polymer can be used as a sensor material to detect the minimum concentration of acid.

Abstract:Self-doped polyaniline modified electrodes were successfully fabricated by copolymerization of aniline and m-aminobenzoic acid in 0.5 mol L-1 sulfuric acid. The electrochemical characteristics of this resulting polymer were investigated. The polymer displayed electrochemical activity with the formal potential of 50 mV in pH 7.0 buffer solution. Also, such 'self-doped' polyaniline was rather stable for a long-term use. Ascorbate was electrocatalytically oxidized at these 'self-doped' polymer-modified electrodes. The effect of pH on the catalysis of ascorbate was explored. By constant potential method, such polymer was also deposited on a dual platinum disk electrode with a gap of 10 mu m. The dependence of the film conductivity on the potential, which showed a peak-shaped curve, was obtained. The device also showed a fast off-on response sensitive to ascorbate with a linearity up to 6.0 x 10(-3) mol L-1 (correlation coefficient 0.996).

Abstract:The electrocatalytic behavior of polianiline (PAni) towards the electro-oxidation of L- ascorbic acid (L-AA) was studied by using cyclic voltammetry. PAni synthesized by oxidative polymerization method, and characterized by using high resolution-transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDAX) confirms large globular structures, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that PAni with amorphous nature, whereas Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of PAni shows C-N stretching, X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) attributes the peaks C1s, N1s and O1s. UV-visible spectra revealed PAni is conducting and its Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area is 343.67 m2/g demonstrates it has high surface area and good adsorption ability. The PAni electrocatalyst showed an excellent selectivity towards L-AA in presence of different inorganic and biological expedients under similar conditions. A limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were calculated found to be 5.1 µM and 17.2 µM respectively. Furthermore, the electrocatalyst activity towards L-AA were also validated for real sample analysis like lemon juice and vitamin-C tablet by quantifying the L-AA. The exceptionally higher conductivity and good electrocatalytic performance of PAni make it a promising material for sustainable energy generation and environmental protection without relying on metals or harmful chemicals.

Abstract:Redox titration results and electronic spectral evidence show that the oxidation state of the “emeraldine” base form of polyaniline can vary depending on whether its synthesis is performed in the presence or absence of air. Chemical doping of leucoemeraldine, the completely reduced form of polyaniline, to selected oxidation states can be accomplished by a variety of oxidizing agents such as Cl2, (NO)+(PF6)−, FeCl3, SnCl4 and TCNQ.

Abstract:Polyaniline, which was electroactive in pH5.5 NaAc-HAc buffers, was used to investigate the electrochemistry of some heme proteins. The polyaniline was electropolymerized and deposited on a macro- and a micro- platinum electrode successfully The optimum preparation method and conditions were that the polymer film was polymerized by a galvanostatic method with 35 mu A/cm(2) current density in a 2.0 mol/L HCl solution containing 1.0 mol/L monomer under nitrogen atmosphere. The deposit amount was about 7.0 mC/cm(2) for the macro- and 8.5 mC/cm(2) for the micro- electrode. Experimental results revealed that the commonly used heme proteins, myoglobin and hemoglobin, could exhibit useful current responses at the polymer coated electrode. Since polyaniline modified electrode have a lot of virtues such as stability, good longevity, reversibility, conductivity etc., they may be useful for protein studies in the future. Another application of the polymer is, therefore, reported in this paper.

Abstract:Nitrite is a common contaminant in drinking water and groundwater with high environmental and health risks. Electrochemical sensing method is a selective and easy technique to detect nitrite in water. In this study, we report a research about a poly(aniline-co-o-aminophenol)-modified glassy carbon electrode (PAOA/GCE) for aqueous nitrite detection. With stable redox activity and conductivity in a wide pH range compared with polyaniline, PAOA is suitable to be used as electrode material in a neutral medium. The PAOA/GCE was prepared by cyclic voltammogram method by electrochemical copolymerization of o-aminophenol and aniline. SEM and FT-IR results proved the formation of PAOA, and the electrode exhibited higher responses toward nitrite oxidation compared with polyaniline-modified GCE and bare GCE. We also studied the impact of scan rate, pH, and temperature on nitrite detection. The PAOA/GCE could be used in a wide pH range from 2 to 8 and used to detect nitrite in the linear range from 5.0 × 10−6 to 2.0 × 10−3 M with the detection limit of 2 × 10−6 M. Its excellent reproducibility, stability, and anti-interference ability make it a promising electrode in detecting aqueous nitrite in drinking water and groundwater.

Abstract:Polyaniline(PANI) films doped with camphorsulfonic acid(CSA) and hydrocholoric acid(HCl) on gold electrodes are prepared by using an electrochemical method in order to study the doping ion exchanges of PANI. The exchange of the doping ions in each PANI film doped individually with two kinds of ions is investigated in CSA and HCl aqueous solutions, respectively, by means of cyclic voltammetry(CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and raman spectrometry(Raman). The result shows that the CSA- with a large ionic radius in a PANI film can be exchanged easily by small ion Cl- in the electrolyte. On the contrary, it is difficult to exchange Cl- by CSA- ion. Moreover, the morphology of PANI is not changed before and after doping ionic exchange, and it is so called a morphology 'memory' effect.

Abstract:Due to the toxicity of heavy metal ions which impacts on public health and the environment, the development of effective methods of detection has assumed a high priority. In this study, we have established an electrochemical sensor based on a CoCu-MOF/polyaniline (CoCu-MOF/PANI) sensing electrode that can simultaneously detect Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in water samples. The CoCu-MOF/PANI composite was prepared by a one-step in situ polymerization method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ content was detected by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) at an optimized pH (4.5). The proposed electrochemical sensor has achieved simultaneous Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ detection down to 0.39 ug/L (Pb 2+ ) and 0.61 ug/L (Cd 2+ ). Anti-interference and reproducibility experiments have been conducted. In spiking experiments, the recovery of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in water samples ranged from 98.6% to 102.13%, indicating effective targeted electrochemical sensing. This work has delivered a functional design of CoCu-MOF/PANI materials, and established an efficient methodology for heavy metal ion detection.
