Abstract:The effect of annealing treatment on permeability and magneto-impedance in Fe73Cu1Nb3.5Si14B8.5 amorphous ribbons was investigated systematically. The magneto-impedance profiles were measured as a function of the external magnetic field at various frequencies up to 10MHz. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permeability were measured in a frequency range of 0.1–10MHz under different applied ac field. The results indicated that the longitudinal permeability resulting from domain wall motion decreased drastically after annealing treatment, but the permeability resulting from the rotational magnetization increased with increasing annealing temperature up to 540°C and then decreased at higher temperatures. The largest magneto-impedance effect was observed in the nanocrystalline alloy. The correlation between the soft magnetic properties and the magnitude and sensitivity of the GMI effect was discussed.

Abstract:The influence of longitudinal field annealing on the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect in Co70Fe5Si15Nb2.2Cu0.8B7 amorphous ribbons has been investigated. It was found that annealing in the open air at magnetic fields smaller than the anisotropy field along the ribbon gave rise to the GMI-valve phenomenon, while annealing at magnetic fields higher than the anisotropy field significantly reduced the GMI effect. The GMI-valve behavior corresponding to the highest field sensitivity of GMI (125%/Oe) was observed at a frequency of 0.1 MHz in the ribbon annealed under an applied field of 2 Oe. This is ideal for developing sensitive and quick-response magnetic sensors. The GMI-valve behavior observed in the Co-based amorphous ribbon due to field annealing can be explained by considering the complex permeability spectra in relation to the rotational dc magnetization. Abstract:We present here, the results of an investigation on giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect in both annealed and as-quenched Co70Fe5Si15B10 and Co70Fe5Si15Nb2.2Cu0.8B7 ribbons. Substitution of Cu and Nb for B in an initial Co70Fe5Si15B10 composition forming the Co70Fe5Si15Nb2.2Cu0.8B7 composition improves both GMI effect and its field sensitivity. The GMI effect was more pronounced in the annealed samples. The field sensitivity of both the longitudinal permeability ratio and the magnetoimpedance ratio for the annealed Co70Fe5Si15Nb2.2Cu0.8B7 ribbon increase exponentially as the testing temperature is increased, indicating that the magnetic permeability is very sensitive to the temperature. Abstract:The influence of annealing on microstructure, magnetic properties including the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect of a Fe-based nanocomposite has been investigated. The nanocomposite structure composed of ultra-fine Fe(Si) grains embedded in an amorphous matrix was attained by annealing the Fe-based amorphous alloy prepared by rapid quenching method. The GMI profiles were measured for samples annealed at different temperatures ranging from 350 to 650°C in vacuum and for 30min. It is found that the mean grain size of the α-Fe(Si) crystallites in the order of 12nm remains almost unchanged until the annealing temperature reached 540°C. A decrease of anisotropy field and an increase of GMI with increasing annealing temperature up to 540°C were observed and ascribed to the increase of the magnetic permeability and the decrease of the coercivity, whereas the opposite tendency was found for the sample annealed above 600°C which is likely due to the microstructural change caused by high-temperature annealing. This indicates that variation in the magnetic characteristic of the amorphous phase upon annealing changed the intergrain exchange coupling. This altered both the magnetic softness and the effective anisotropy and consequently modified the GMI features. The study of the temperature dependence of the GMI effect provides further understanding of the magnetic exchange between these crystallized grains through the amorphous boundaries in Fe-based nanocrystalline materials.
Effect of Tension Annealing on Giant Magneto-Impedance in Glass-Covered Co-rich Amorphous Wire

Abstract:The glass-covered Co-rich amorphous wires were annealed by tension-joule heat annealing process. The influences of tension annealing on the magnetostatic properties and giant magneto-impedance (GMI) effect were investigated by measuring hysteresis loop and magneto-impedance value after annealing. The results show that the magentic anisotropy field is reduced by the annealing treatments,furthermore,the maximum GMI value is increased to 80% and the magnetic field strength corresponding to the maximum GMI value is decreased to 60 A/m. The GMI value is enhanced by increasing the sample shell inner domain volume and inducing a transverse anisotropy due to the changing of inner stress in glass-covered Co-rich amorphous wires.

Abstract:The magnetic permeability and giant magnetoimpedance effect of Fe73.5Cu1Mo3Si13.5B9 alloy ribbons in different annealed states have been measured as functions of the external magnetic field and the ac driving current frequency. It is found that the giant magnetoimpedance effect in the magnetic-field annealed state is larger than that in the nonfield annealed state. In the field annealed state, the easy magnetization direction is along the driving current as well as the external magnetic field. This leads to significant change of the permeability at high frequencies, and consequently the magnetoimpedance is enhanced in this state.

Abstract:This letter reports the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect and its magnetic response in optimized Co70Fe5Si15Nb2.2Cu0.8B7 amorphous and Fe71Al2Si14B8.5Cu1Nb3.5 nanocrystalline ribbons. At a given frequency of 5 MHz, the largest GMI ratios of 513% and 640% were observed for the Co-based amorphous and Fe-based nanocrystalline samples, respectively. More interestingly, the magnetic response reached the largest value of 144%/Oe at the frequency of 4 MHz for the Co-based amorphous sample and of 40%/Oe at the frequency of 5 MHz for the Fe-based nanocrystalline sample. This is ideal for high-frequency and high-performance GMI-based sensor applications. The skin effect model was used to interpret the obtained results of GMI in connection with the magnetic-field and frequency dependences of the longitudinal permeability. Abstract:In the present work, annealing effects upon the crystallization and giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) of Fe86.5Zr7B4Al2.5 ribbons were investigated, in comparison with the case of Fe89Zr7B4 ribbons. Annealing at 720 degrees C for Fe89Zr7B4 results in the formation of mixture of alpha-Fe and Fe3Zr, and the appropriate addition of Al can restrain the Fe3Zr precipitation. The optimum annealing temperature for obtaining the largest magnetoimpedance is 650 degrees C for Fe89Zr7B4, and is 720 degrees C for Fe86.5Zr7B4Al2.5, where the permeability reaches its maximum value. The GMI effect depends not only on the permeability change with field, but also on the magnitude of the permeability itself. The reduction of the permeability and GMI at high annealing temperature is due to the occurrence of Fe3Zr precipitation and the coarsening of a-Fe grains. The maximum magnetoimpedance (Delta Z/Z(0))(max) under applied magnetic field H = 7162A/m can reach -43.3% for Fe89Zr7B4, and -45.8% for Fe86.5Zr7B4Al2.5. The appropriate Al addition in Fe-Zr-B ribbon not only lowers the transverse anisotropy, but also improves the change slope of impedance at low fields (H < 1000 A/m).

Abstract:The Ni44.1Mn44.2Sn11.7 ribbons were prepared by melt spinning. A single-phase austenite with L21 structure was confirmed in the melt-spun ribbons at room temperature. After the heat treatment, the martensitic transformation temperature increases obviously in the annealed ribbons. This method may be an effective way to tune the characteristic temperatures in the ferromagnetic shape memory alloys. Giant magnetic entropy changes are observed in the annealed ribbons. The peak values at 10kOe are 32.1 and 20.1J∕kgK, for the ribbons annealed at 1123 and 1173K, respectively.

Abstract:The effects of Cr doping and annealing temperature on the microstructure, soft magnetic properties, giant magneto-impedance (GMI) effect and corrosion resistance of Co68.15Fe4.35Si12.5B15- x Cr x (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 at.%) ribbons were investigated. Appropriate Cr content (≤3 at.%) effectively improves the thermal stability, magnetic softness, and GMI value of the ribbons, whereas more Cr deteriorates the magnetic properties owing to the precipitation of Co-Fe nanocrystals in the amorphous matrix. In addition, the corrosion resistance increases gradually with the increase of Cr content. The x = 3 ribbon annealed at 753 K exhibits low coercivity of 0.45 A/m, high permeability of 22,000 at 1 kHz, large GMI value of 196% at 5 MHz, and great sensitivity of 118%/Oe, which is superior to other ribbons. The variation of magnetic properties was explained by the change of magnetic anisotropy and permeability owing to the Cr doping and isothermal annealing.

Abstract:Glass-coated FeCuNbVSiB microwires was annealed in the temperature range of 380 °C to 600 °C. The microstructures and magnetostatic properties of the glass-coated microwires were characterized by X–ray diffraction (XRD), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) respectively. Relative complex permeability and complex permittivity was measured by transmission/reflection (T/R) coaxial line method in the frequency range of 2-18 GHz for as-casted and annealed Fe-rich microwires samples. The measured results show that the coercive field of the Fe-rich microwires decrease to 1.54 Oe at 470 °C, and then increase rapidly with the increasing of the annealing temperature. The coercive field and saturation field of the microwire samples increased abruptly with the outgrowth of the Fe-B hard magnetic phase in the Fe-rich microwire samples. The imaginary part of permeability and the natural ferromagnetic resonance frequency decrease for the thermal treatment below 470 °C, and then increase with the annealing temperature up to 530 °C. The change of magnetostatic and microwave electromagnetic properties of the microwires samples with the annealing process come from the change of the anisotropy caused by the internal stress.

Abstract:We report on a combined current-modulation annealing (CCMA) method, which integrates the optimized pulsed current (PC) and DC annealing techniques, for improving the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect and its field sensitivity of Co-rich amorphous microwires. Relative to an as-prepared Co68.2Fe4.3B15Si12.5 wire, CCMA is shown to remarkably improve the GMI response of the wire. At 10MHz, the maximum GMI ratio and its field sensitivity of the as-prepared wire were, respectively, increased by 3.5 and 2.28 times when subjected to CCMA. CCMA increased atomic order orientation and circumferential permeability of the wire by the co-action of high-density pulsed magnetic field energy and thermal activation energy at a PC annealing stage, as well as the formation of uniform circular magnetic domains by a stable DC magnetic field at a DC annealing stage. The magnetic moment can overcome eddy-current damping or nail-sticked action in rotational magnetization, giving rise to a double-peak feature and wider working field range (up to +/- 2 Oe) at relatively higher frequency (f >= 1 MHz). Abstract:The effect of magnetic field annealing on crystallization and high-frequency/temperature soft magnetic properties is investigated for (Fe0.5Co0.5)73.5Cu1Nb3Si13.5B9 alloy. The applied magnetic field in the annealing process effectively facilitates the precipitation of ferromagnetic α-FeCo(Si) grains from the amorphous precursor and softens the magnetic properties, which are verified by the increase of crystalline volume fractions (Vcry) and the decrease of coercivity (HC), respectively. The initial permeability (μi) of sample annealed with applied field exhibits relatively higher value at elevated temperature, which is attributed to the intensive magnetic exchange coupling between the α-FeCo(Si) grains through the intergranular phase.

Abstract:The effects of two-step annealing on the microstructures and soft magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe86Zr7B6Cu1 ribbons were studied. Two-step annealing results in a marked decrease of grain size and a distinct improvement of soft magnetic properties with respect to conventional annealing at 600°C for 1h. Bcc α-Fe with the grain size of 8nm is formed in ribbon after it is pre-annealed at 750°C for 2min followed by annealing at 600°C for 58min. Its coercive force Hc, initial permeability μi, and relaxation frequency f0 are 1.5A/m, 6.15×104, and 8.9×104Hz, respectively. The decrease of grain size may result from a larger value of the nucleation rate obtained during the initial stage of crystallization by annealing amorphous ribbon at higher temperatures for short duration. But pre-annealing at 800°C leads to the decrease of soft magnetic properties because of the formation of Fe3Zr.

Abstract:Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys obtained through isothermal annealing of their amorphous counterparts have emerged as an indispensable soft magnetic material. The development of Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys with excellent soft magnetic properties and good corrosion resistance is highly desirable. In this study, the magnetic properties and corrosion resistance of Fe75.8Si12B8Nb2.6Cu0.6P1 alloys are investigated a function of the annealing temperature. Upon crystallization, the permeability (μ) and coercivity (H c) of the alloy gradually improve with an increase in the annealing temperature owing to the formation of homogeneous and fine α-Fe(Si) grains. However, excessively high temperatures promote the precipitation of Fe2B and Fe23B6 phases, significantly deteriorating the soft magnetic properties. The alloy annealed at 843 K exhibits excellent magnetic softness with a high saturation magnetization of 1.41 T, a good μ of 2.7 × 104 at 1 kHz and a low H c of 0.8 A/m. On the other hand, the corrosion resistance of the alloy is sensitive to the annealing temperature, and the higher the annealing temperature, the better the corrosion resistance will be. The improved corrosion resistance is due to the increase in the crystalline volume fraction resulting in the formation of an insoluble protective layer rich in Si and Nb oxides. This study further reveals the relationship between the annealing temperature and alloy properties and can facilitate the development of soft magnetic nanocrystalline alloys with good corrosion resistance.

Abstract:The influence of conventional annealing on the magnetic properties and the magneto-impedance (MI) effect of Co72Zr8B20 alloys has been intensively studied in this paper. The as-quenched Co72Zr8B20 ribbon is identified to be amorphous alloy. After Co72Zr8B20 being annealed at 495°C for 10min, there is almost no change in the XRD pattern. When the annealing temperature (Ta) reaches 540°C, a diffraction peak representing some crystalline phase appears. After the sample being annealed at 630°C, Co, Zr and B12Zr crystalline phase are formed in the alloy. Magnetic measurements reveal that the as-quenched Co72Zr8B20 possesses smaller coercivity, higher permeability and larger saturation magnetization. With the increasing annealing temperature, the soft magnetic properties of the sample greatly deteriorate. The study on the MI ratio (ΔZ/Z(%)) versus external magnetic field curves indicates that the MI behavior changes from single-peak to double-peak shape when Ta increases from 495 to 540°C. The most drastic MI ratio about 90% is obtained in the as-quenched Co72Zr8B20 at 1110kHz. The mechanism of thermal treatment affecting the magnetic properties and the MI effect in Co72Zr8B20 alloys will be discussed in this paper.
The Effects of Magnetic Field Annealing on the Magnetic Properties and Microstructure of Fe 80 Si 9 B 11 Amorphous Alloys

Abstract:The present work investigated the effects of magnetic field annealing on the magnetic properties, mechanical properties and microstructure of the Fe80Si9B11 amorphous alloys. The results show that the soft magnetic properties (SMPs) were obviously improved after the samples were annealed below the crystallization temperature with a 1 T magnetic field. The atom probe tomography (APT) results showed that the magnetic field has little effect on the element distribution of the annealed samples at 653 K. The results of XRD and TEM showed that the 653 K x 0 T sample included a few nanocrystals and an amorphous matrix while the 653 K x 1 T sample still retained an amorphous structure. It is worth noting that a large number of spherical symmetry clusters and a small number of translational symmetry clusters can be observed in the 653 K x 1 T sample. Many translational symmetry clusters, and a few spherical symmetry clusters, can be identified in the 693 K x 1 T sample. Both good soft magnetic properties (SMPs) and acceptable mechanical properties were obtained after the sample was annealed at 653 K. Compared with that of the as-cast sample, the values of maximum magnetic flux intensity (B-m), elastic modulus (E-r) and hardness increased by 13.7%, 36.6% and 9.4%, respectively, while the values of coercivity (H-c) and hysteresis loss (P-u) decreased by 71.5% and 68.2%, respectively. After the sample was annealed at 693 K, the SMPs exhibited a deterioration, and Er and hardness also dropped sharply. Based on the above results, the mechanism of the microstructural change for Fe80Si9B11 amorphous alloys related to the magnetic field annealing conditions was proposed. The relationship between the soft magnetic properties, mechanical properties, and the microstructure of the sample was also discussed. This paper provides a basis for the further improvement the SMPs of the Fe80Si9B11 amorphous ribbons by controlling the microstructure.

Abstract:This research paper investigated the impact of normal annealing (NA) and magnetic field annealing (FA) on the soft magnetic properties and microstructure of Fe82Si2B13P1C3 amorphous alloy iron cores. The annealing process involved various methods of magnetic field application: transverse magnetic field annealing (TFA), longitudinal magnetic field annealing (LFA), transverse magnetic field annealing followed by longitudinal magnetic field annealing (TLFA) and longitudinal magnetic field annealing followed by transverse magnetic field annealing (LTFA). The annealed samples were subjected to testing and analysis using techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic performance testing equipment and magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. The obtained results were then compared with those of commercially produced Fe80Si9B11. Fe82Si2B13P1C3 demonstrated the lowest loss of P1.4T,2kHz = 8.1 W/kg when annealed in a transverse magnetic field at 370 °C, which was 17% lower than that of Fe80Si9B11. When influenced by the longitudinal magnetic field, the magnetization curve tended to become more rectangular, and the coercivity (B3500A/m) of Fe82Si2B13P1C3 reached 1.6 T, which was 0.05 T higher than that of Fe80Si9B11. During the 370 °C annealing process of the Fe82Si2B13P1C3 amorphous iron core, the internal stress in the strip gradually dissipated, and impurity domains such as fingerprint domains disappeared and aligned with the length direction of the strip. Consequently, wide strip domains with low resistance and easy magnetization were formed, thereby reducing the overall loss of the amorphous iron core.

Abstract:Al-Cu-Fe alloying addition can simultaneously improve the coercivity and magnetization of the as-spun SmCo5-based ribbons, the annealing process can further improve the hard-magnetic properties of ribbons. In this paper, SmCo5 + 3 wt% Al82.8Cu17Fe0.2 ribbons melt-spun at 40 m/s were annealed at 500 – 700 °C for 30 min. It is found the annealing improves the crystallinity of the grains, changes the phase composition and microstructure, especially the distribution of Sm(Co, M)7 phase. By doping 3% Al82.8Cu17Fe0.2 alloy and annealing at 600 °C for 30 min, the SmCo5-based ribbons obtain ultra-high coercivity of 26.8 ± 3.3 kOe. The reason for the maximum coercivity at 600 °C can be attributed to the high content of Sm(Co, M)5 grains, improved crystallinity of the grains, and the refinement of the grains.
