Abstract:Heterogeneous systems containing ionic liquids (ILs) with gases and solvents extend the acpplications of ILs in absorption, extraction and heterogeneous catalysis. In recent years, the surface/interfacial properties and surface/interfacial structures of ionic liquids have been widely studied, because they are important due to their remarkable effects on heterogeneous reactions and separation efficiency. In this article, the surface/interfacial tension, as well as the surface/interfacial structures of ILs and their mixtures with water and organic solvents are summarized. The research methods, objectives and results are introduced. The relationship between surface/interfacial tension and surface/interfacial structures is elucidated. Finally, the exiting problems and development prospects of the studies on surface/interfacial properties and surface/interfacial structures of ILs are discussed.

Abstract:In liquidliquid extraction systems, extractants and extracted complexes may have surface activity, resulting in the formation of a variety of supramolecular assemblies such as vesicles and micelles. The assemblies are limited at microscopic and mesoscopic scales. Researches on interface of extraction also focus on microscopic and mesoscopic scales at present. Recently, our group first reported macroscopic supramolecular assembly(MSA) at the interface of extraction systems. The interface can be studied on macroscopic scales by MSA. The process of MSA in ionic liquids(ILs) based extraction systems also provides a new way to study complex supramolecular interactions between ILs and mediums. This review focused on microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic supramolecular assembly in extraction systems. First, the interface properties and the process of ion exchange in extraction were summarized. Next, the structures of mesoscopic supramolecular assemblies were reviewed . Finally, the macroscopic supramolecular assembly(MSA) at the interface of extraction systems and its application on separation were emphatically introduced. The MSA process at the interface enriches the extraction methods. And the Marangoni effect presented at the interface supplies a new approach to provide continuous driving force, which is an important scientific problem in the field of MSA.

Abstract:Surface chemistry focuses on the investigation of the adsorption, migration, assembly, activation, reaction, and desorption of atoms and molecules at surfaces. Surface chemistry plays the pivotal roles in both fundamental science and applied technology. This review will summarize the recent progresses on surface assembly, synthesis and catalysis investigated mainly by scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Surface assemblies of water and small biomolecules, construction of Sierpi & nacute;ski triangles and surface chirality are summarized. On-surface synthesis of conjugated carbo- and heterocycles and other kinds of carbon nanostructures are surveyed. Surface model catalysis, including single-atom catalysis and electrochemical catalysis, are discussed at the single-atom level. Abstract:In this article, the recent progress made by Peking University is briefly introduced. Based on Theory of Countercurrent Extraction established by Prof. Guangxian Xu, the static equilibrium and dynamic process for two- and three-outlet countercurrent extractions, and designed the optimized parameters for the real cascades to separate different rare earth minerals, which can be scaled-up to the industrial process without any further experimental verification were systematically investigated. In order to stabilize the quality of products and improve the capability of automation for extraction process, we have also established an Am-241 stimulated X-ray fluorescent energy dispersive method to detect the elemental composition in both organic and aqueous phases, which can be used as an on-line analysis method in practice. Furthermore, the expert system and the control software with open- and close-loop models have been set up. Combined with the detected data from on-line analysis, the flow-rates of extracting, feeding, scrubbing and stripping solutions can be controlled in an optimum status for the industrial cascades. In addition, we have developed a new multi-input and multi-output countercurrent extraction process for separating multi-component rare earth mixture with lower chemical cost and pollution.

Abstract:The present review considers some physicochemical properties of fluid mixtures that are of importance for fluid extraction and supercitical fluid chromatography (SFC). Firstly, the important types of phase diagrams are treated, the occurrence of solid phases also being considered in some simple cases. Specific examples are given of mixtures of a highly volatile component I (e.g. CO2, C2H6) with a relatively involatile component II (e.g. squalane) of very different molecular size, shape, structure, and/or polarity, and it is shown how the rather complicated types of phase diagrams can be calculated and correlated. The importance of fluid mixtures extends far beyond the fields of science and technology reviewed.

Abstract:The heterogeneous microinterfacial behavior of contaminants is important for understanding and resolving environmental problems. Extensive investigation on the mechanisms of transfer and reactions of contaminants at microinterfaces is central to developing environmental science and technology. As the fundamental aspect of substance transfer, the droplet microinterfacial behavior in real time is overall ambiguous. This analysis elucidates the internal vortex and three-dimensional flow patterns of millimeter-sized adhered oil droplets in an aqueous environment. Furthermore, a novel method was developed for measuring the Cu-complex concentration based on image analysis to enable the monitoring of droplet-level substance transfer in real time. A horseshoe-shaped region of cross-interfacial flow forms on both sides of droplets under external laminar flow. Cross-interfacial flow accelerates the renewal of droplet surfaces and improves the efficiency of interphase substance transfer. Especially for larger droplets, the convective enhancement is more significant and can be more than doubled.

Interfacial Partitioning Enhances Microextractionby Multicomponent Nanodroplets

Abstract:The sensitive and reliable in-droplet chemical analysis benefits from the enhanced partition of an analyte into the droplets. This work, we will show that chemical reactions in surface nanodroplets can shift the partition of analytes from a highly diluted solution to the droplets. Seven types of organic acids with partition coefficients (LgP) ranging from -0.7 to 1.87 are used as model analytes dissolved in an oil solution that are extracted from the flow into aqueous nanodroplets immobilized on a substrate. The timescale of integrated extraction and reaction in droplets was represented by the decoloration time of the droplets. Our results show that the effective distribution coefficient of the analyte can be decreased by 3 to 11 times of the distribution coefficient of the analyte in the bulk liquids. The principle behind the significantly shifted partition is proposed to be enhanced the transfer of the analyte across the droplet surface. The chemical reaction in the droplets enhances the partition of the analyte from a highly diluted solution. Our results show that the interfacial behavior of the analyte may be advantageous as it may improve extraction and partition. Such enhanced extraction may be leveraged for sensitive chemical detection using reactive droplets.

Continuous Counter-Current Multistage Microextraction in a Novel Tube-In-Tube Microextractor

Abstract:Counter-current operation has been widely applied to enhance the extraction efficiency for systems with low distribution coefficients, which was hindered in microextraction because viscous force and surface tension dominate over gravity and inertial force. In this study, a novel design of a tube-in-tube microextractor relying on a poly tetra fluoroethylene membrane to construct a stable interface was proposed to conduct continuous counter-current extraction. Extraction kinetics for two systems with different distribution coefficients, membranes with different pore radii, and three flow rate ratios were measured as a function of residence time. For the system that toluene was used to extract 0.06 wt % phenol in water, 4.1 stages of extraction efficiency were achieved at a residence time of 9.8 min. A challenging case study (50 wt % acetone-water-toluene) was subsequently conducted to prove the high applicability for emulsion systems of this special microextractor. Lastly, a mathematical model was established and the predicted results of three flow rate ratios are in good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:The supercritical fluid extraction and fractionation method (SFEF) can realize deep cut and separation for heavy oils, which have provided a powerful tool for heavy oil chemistry research. This work summarizes recent research progress on aspects include the association and aggregation, the diffusion phenomena of SFEF cuts, the association and interaction between trace metal species and asphaltene in liquid solvent and supercritical conditions. The molecular level composition changes in supercritical extraction, thermal reaction and hydrotreating processes will also be discussed. The inspiration of the relevant chemical fundamentals to the development of heavy oil multi-stage separation by supercritical fluid processing technologies will be introduced as well.

Abstract:Environmental interfacial reactions such as adsorption-desorption and oxidation-reduction are of vital importance in controlling the transportation, transformation and fate of pollutants. Traditional macroscopic studies have well modeled and described those environmental interfacial behaviors, but can not reveal the reaction mechanisms, such that the chemical behaviors of pollutants in natural environment can not be predicted. With the application of spectroscopic techniques, especially X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, molecular information has been provided to interpret the mechanisms, leading to a better understanding of environmental interfacial phenomenon. These studies are pushing the development of environmental chemistry from a macroscopic level to a molecular level. Modern spectroscopic techniques allow the in-situ and real-time investigation of the chemical reactions occurring at solid/water interface, providing both quantitative and structural information to elucidate the interfacial processes. Results from these studies largely improved the current understanding of the movement and transformation of pollutants among different environmental media ( soil, air and water) and the prediction of their partitioning and transportation. This work starts a simple overview of interfacial reactions, and then focuses mainly on adsorption-desorption behavior as examples to introduce the applications of several spectroscopic techniques (i.e. XAFS, FTIR, NMR, Raman and Mossbauer), and finally ends with a discussion of the constraints and promise of these techniques.

Abstract:The trace level aggregates play a vital role in improving surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensitivity and heterogeneous catalysis efficiency as well. The exceptional evolution of the solute aggregates occurring both in bulk solutions and at interfaces unlock new insight in solution, holding a potential to change the paradigm in a variety of areas across chemistry and biology. Existential state of solutes substantially affects the efficiency and direction of various chemical and biological processes, about which current consensus is still limited at macro and micro levels. At the trace level, solutes assume a pivotal role across a spectrum of critical fields. However, their existential states, especially at interfaces, remain largely elusive. Herein, an exceptional evolution of solute molecules is unveiled from micro to trace, solution to interface, with the aid of surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy, extinction, DLS and theoretical simulations. Given predominant existence of monomers within the solution, these aggregates dominate the interfacial behavior of solute molecules. Moreover, a universal, aggregate‐controlled mechanism is demonstrated that aggregates triggered by cosolvent, which can dramatically promote efficiency of catalytic reactions. The results provide novel insights into the interaction mechanisms between reactants and catalysts, potentially offering fresh perspectives for the manipulation of multiphase catalysis and related biological processes.

Abstract:Physical science has undergone an evolutional transition in research focus from solid bulks to surfaces, culminating in numerous prominent achievements. Currently, it is experiencing a new exploratory phase-interfacial science. Many a technology with a tremendous impact is closely associated with a functional interface which delineates the boundary between disparate materials or phases, evokes complexities that surpass its pristine comprising surfaces, and thereby unveils a plethora of distinctive properties. Such an interface may generate completely new or significantly enhanced properties. These specific properties are closely related to the interfacial states formed at the interfaces. Therefore, establishing a quantitative relationship between the interfacial states and their functionalities has become a key scientific issue in interfacial science. However, interfacial science also faces several challenges such as invisibility in characterization, inaccuracy in calculation, and difficulty in precise construction. To tackle these challenges, people must develop new strategies for precise detection, accurate computation, and meticulous construction of functional interfaces. Such strategies are anticipated to provide a comprehensive toolbox tailored for future interfacial science explorations and thereby lay a solid scientific foundation for several key future technologies.
Unraveling the Phase Behavior and Stability of Surfactant-Free Microemulsions: from Molecular Interactions to Macroscopic Properties.

Abstract:Surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs), formed in mixed ternary systems such as water/ethanol/oil, have garnered substantial interest due to their unique properties and broad applications in areas such as enzyme-catalyzed reactions and nanoparticle synthesis. In this work, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the spontaneous nucleation and stabilization mechanisms of SFMEs, employing experimental techniques, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and Flory-Huggins (F-H) theory. The formation of multiscale nanostructures (characteristic scales of ∼1 and ∼100 nm) and their interfacial charging characteristics in SFMEs have been revealed experimentally. MD simulations investigated the structure and stability on the microscopic scale, enhancing our understanding of molecular interactions within these microemulsions. Our theoretical analysis revealed that the stability of mesoscopic nanodroplets within SFMEs hinges on a delicate balance between mixing entropy and internal energy. Equilibrium between these energies results in stable nanodroplet solutions, showcasing a delicate balance that can be manipulated by adjusting the volume fractions of the components and their interaction parameters. This research not only advances the theoretical understanding of SFMEs but also highlights their potential in industrial applications, emphasizing the importance of integrating theoretical and experimental approaches to develop functional nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Hypothesis Surface interactions of bubbles and oil with interface-active species like asphaltenes influence many interfacial phenomena in various engineering processes. It holds both fundamental and practical significance to quantitatively characterize these interactions. Experiments The surface forces of air bubbles, asphaltenes and asphaltenes-toluene droplets in various aqueous solutions have been quantified using an integrated thin film drainage apparatus and an atomic force microscope coupled with bubble probe. The effects of asphaltenes concentration, pH, salinity, Ca 2+ ions and surfactants have been examined. Findings Hydrophobic interaction drives attachment of bubbles and asphaltenes surfaces or oil droplets under high salinity condition. Increasing asphaltenes concentration in oil droplets enhances their hydrophobic attraction with bubbles due to strengthened asphaltenes adsorption and aggregation at oil–water interface. Increasing pH weakens the hydrophobic interaction as oil surfaces become more negatively charged and less hydrophobic. Under low salinity condition, strong electrical double layer and van der Waals repulsion inhibits the bubble-oil droplet contact. Introducing Ca 2+ ions and surfactants leads to strong steric repulsion, preventing bubble-oil contact. This research has advanced our mechanistic understanding of how bubbles and oil droplets interact in aqueous systems and offers useful insights to modulate such interactions in oil production, water treatment and other interfacial processes.
