Abstract:The stretching vibrational overtone bands (3000), (4000) and (5000) of silane are recorded on a Fourier transform spectrometer with a specially made multipass cell at a resolution of 0.01 cm-1. The spectra show a striking symmetrical top rotational structure, which has been predicted as the limiting case of a spherical top exhibiting local mode behavior, and provides an excellent chance to study the local mode rotational structures in detail. This article reviews the interpretation and analysis of the spectra in both local mode and normal mode pictures. The intramolecular dynamics following initial single bond excitation is also discussed.
A Nonlinear Model for Highly Excited Vibrational Energy Levels of Silane

Abstract:The highly excited vibrational energy levels of Sill stretches of silane SiH4 in the electronic ground state are calculated using a three-parameter nonlinear model, i.e., the quantized discrete self-trapping equation. The obtained results are in good agreements with the experimental data and with those obtained from local mode calculations of others. We note that SiH4 molecule is a typical molecule close to the local mode limit, and that when n greater than or equal to 3, the molecule could be thought of as vibrating with the four SiH stretching quanta trapped into a single SiH bond.

Abstract:A high-resolution infrared spectrum of the (2000) stretching vibrational band of silane, SiH4, has been recorded and analyzed. The rotational constants obtained, together with those of the (n000), n=3, 4, 5 bands reported earlier, show a striking effect of local mode vibrations on rotational constants and an evolution of local mode vibrations from the first overtone. The vibrational dependence of the rotational constants is calculated with the customary normal mode model including Darling—Dennison resonances. The calculated and observed constants are in good agreement. The results also show that states with large vibrational quantum number play important roles for the emergence of the local mode vibrations in real molecules.

Abstract:The (3000) and (5000) stretching overtone bands of silane, SiH4, have been observed near 6362 and 10268 cm−1 by Fourier transfer spectroscopy with a resolution of 0.01 cm−1. In both spectra the pseudo-symmetric-top rotational structure, similar to that observed in the (3000) band of germane, was clearly demonstrated. This indicated that these states are very near the local-mode limit. Some striking intensity anomalies were also found.

Abstract:Using a quantum mechanical three-step model we present numerical calculations on the high-harmonic generation from four polyatomic molecules. Ethylene (C$_2$H$_4$) serves as an example where orbital symmetry directly affects the harmonic yield. We treat the case of methane (CH$_4$) to address the high-harmonic generation resulting from a molecule with degenerate orbitals. To this end we illustrate how the single orbital contributions show up in the total high-harmonic signal. This example illustrates the importance of adding coherently amplitude contributions from the individual degenerate orbitals. Finally, we study the high-harmonic generation from propane (C$_3$H$_8$) and butane (C$_4$H$_{10}$). These two molecules, being extended and far from spherical in structure, produce harmonics with non-trivial orientational dependencies. In particular, propane can be oriented so that very high-frequency harmonics are favorized, and thus the molecule contains prospects for the generation of UV attosecond pulses.

Abstract:The quenching effect of anharmonicity on the inter-bond coupling and Coriolis interaction is studied. The local to normal mode correlation diagrams for XY2 and XY3 stretching overtones up to υ = 60 and 20, respectively, are calculated in the normal mode model with Darling—Dennison resonances included. The results show that the high-energy stretching vibrations tend to be bond-localized owing to the anharmonic (Darling—Dennison) resonances.

Abstract:The rotational analysis of high resolution spectra of the (3000), (4000) and (5000) stretching overtone bands of silane is presented here. The results show that the observed symmetric top rotational structure of these bands can be explained by the close coupling of the nv1(A1) and (n-1)ν1 + ν3(F2) vibrational states near the local-mode limit. The corresponding molecular constants are derived by least-squares fitting.

Abstract:A bond-bond coupling dipole model is discussed for the absorption of the local-mode vibrations of XY4 (Y = H, D). In this model the interaction between individual bonds is considered and cross terms occur in the dipole moment. The general forms of the coupling parameters αii, βij, χij for XY4 are reported and their values for the molecules (X = Si, Ge) are calculated. This model is tested with experimental intensity data for silane and germane, and the results agree. The reason for the (3000) band of silane or (4000) band of germane being much weaker than the (2100) band of silane or (3100) band of germane can be explained with this model.

Abstract:We numerically study the intrinsic localized vibrational modes in a diatomic chain with different masses and alternating force constants between nearest neighbors. This model simulates a row of atoms in the [111] direction of sphalerite-structure crystal. We found that the harmonic and quartic anharmonic terms in the nearest-neighbor interaction potential produce the intrinsic localized modes with frequencies above the optical branch or in the gap of the linear spectrum, the distribution patterns of atom amplitudes are asymmetry with a form of quasi-even or quasi-odd-parity, and the inclusion of cubic term in the potential lowers the frequencies of the modes and introduces static displacements for the atoms.

Abstract:A U(2) algebraic model is presented to describe stretching vibrations of XY$_n$ (n=2, 3, and 4) systems, where anharmonic interactions between the bond modes are considered. This model in a limit corresponds to an anharmonically coupled local mode model. As an example, the model for a molecule XY$_4$ is applied to recently observed spectra of methane in both gas and liquid phases, and the results obtained are in good agreement with the experiments.

Abstract:Present work studies the effective rotational Hamiltonians and their vibration-rotational parameters for XH(2) and XH(3) type molecules near the local mode limit by including the diagonal matrix elements of coordinate operators when the bond anharmonicity is significant. An improved ''alpha relation'' is given for the local mode limit by taking the anharmonic bond oscillator wave function as the basis function. Then the rotational tunneling approach is extended to model the effect of nonzero interbond coupling for XH(2) and XH(3) type molecules, which provides a dynamical view of the rovibrational structure of the local mode states. Abstract:The (4000) stretching overtone band of SiH4 has been observed near 8347 cm−1. A symmetric top rotational structure, similar to that observed in the (3000) band of GeH4: Q.-S. Zhu, B. A. Thrush and A. G. Robiette, Chem. Phys. Lett. 150, 181 (1988); Q.-S. Zhu and B. A. Thrush, J. Chem. Phys. 92, 2691 (1990) [1], and the (3000) and (5000) bands of SiH4: Q.-S. Zhu, B.-S. Zhang, Y.-R. Ma and H.-B. Qian, Chem. Phys. Lett. 164, 596 (1989) [2], are clearly demonstrated. Three local-mode bands of SiH4, (3000), (4000) and (5000) are analysed in the symmetric top model. A striking effect of local-mode vibration on rotational constants is observed and accounted for in a classical picture of vibrational localization.

Abstract:The local mode model was used to describe the stretching vibration of C-D bonds of C2D2, while C-C bonds was described in terms of the normal mode model. Hamiltonian was set up and used in non-linear least-squares program to derive the potential parameters. The calculation agree well with observation with a standard deviation of 1.14 cm(-1) The derived parameters were used to predict, those unexplored stretching: vibrational states of C2D2 and C2H2.

Abstract:The effective rotational Hamiltonians of the local mode states are derived for XY2, XY3 and XY4 molecules by averaging the vibration—rotation Hamiltonians using the corresponding local mode vibrational wavefunctions. The results indicate that in a local mode vibrational state the molecular symmetry is reduced by the coupling of H22 term. A tetrahedral molecule reduces to a C3v symmetric top, a symmetric top becomes an asymmetric top, while the degree of asymmetry increases for an asymmetric top. The vibrational dependences of rotational constants and vibration—rotation coupling parameters predicted by present theory are in good agreement with those obtained experimentally from SiH4 local mode vibrational bands.

Abstract:We study nonlinear vibrational localized surface modes in one dimensional diatomic chain with different masses and alternating force constants between nearest neighbors by numerical calculation. This model anharmonicity in the nearest-neighbor interaction potential produce localized surface mode (S1 mode) with frequency close to the acoustic branch in the gap and localized surface modes (S2 mode) with frequency above the top of the optical branch. With the cubic term, the frequency of the mode lowers and the static displacement appears. Our work also shown that whether localized surface excitations can be found in the range of the frequency of the gap or just above the top of the optical branch is related to the balance between the cubic and the quartic anharmonicity, and to the maximum attainable displacement.

Abstract:Ab initio computer simulations of anharmonic vibrational spectra provide nuanced insight into the vibrational behavior of molecules and complexes. The computational bottleneck in such simulations, particularly for ab initio potentials, is often the generation of mode-coupling potentials. Focusing specifically on two-mode couplings in this analysis, the combination of a local-mode representation and multilevel methods is demonstrated to be particularly symbiotic. In this approach, a low-level quantum chemistry method is employed to predict the pairwise couplings that should be included at the target level of theory in vibrational self-consistent field (and similar) calculations. Pairs that are excluded by this approach are "recycled" at the low level of theory. Furthermore, because this low-level pre-screening will eventually become the computational bottleneck for sufficiently large chemical systems, distance-based truncation is applied to these low-level predictions without substantive loss of accuracy. This combination is demonstrated to yield sub-wavenumber fidelity with reference vibrational transitions when including only a small fraction of target-level couplings; the overhead of predicting these couplings, particularly when employing distance-based, local-mode cutoffs, is a trivial added cost. This combined approach is assessed on a series of test cases, including ethylene, hexatriene, and the alanine dipeptide. Vibrational self-consistent field (VSCF) spectra were obtained with an RI-MP2/cc-pVTZ potential for the dipeptide, at approximately a 5-fold reduction in computational cost. Considerable optimism for increased accelerations for larger systems and higher-order couplings is also justified, based on this investigation.

Abstract:This article presents a general computational approach for efficient simulations of anharmonic vibrational spectra in chemical systems. An automated local-mode vibrational approach is presented, which borrows techniques from localized molecular orbitals in electronic structure theory. This approach generates spatially localized vibrational modes, in contrast to the delocalization exhibited by canonical normal modes. The method is rigorously tested across a series of chemical systems, ranging from small molecules to large water clusters and a protonated dipeptide. It is interfaced with exact, grid-based approaches, as well as vibrational self-consistent field methods. Most significantly, this new set of reference coordinates exhibits a well-behaved spatial decay of mode couplings, which allows for a systematic, a priori truncation of mode couplings and increased computational efficiency. Convergence can typically be reached by including modes within only about 4 Å. The local nature of this truncation suggests particular promise for the ab initio simulation of anharmonic vibrational motion in large systems, where connection to experimental spectra is currently most challenging.

Abstract:In this work, we first review the perturbative treatment of an oscillator with cubic anharmonicity. It is shown that there is a quantum‐classical correspondence in terms of mean displacement, mean‐squared displacement, and the corresponding variance in the first‐order perturbation theory, provided that the amplitude of the classical oscillator is fixed at the zeroth‐order energy of quantum mechanics . This correspondence condition is realized by proposing the extended Langevin dynamics (XLD), where the key is to construct a proper driving force. It is assumed that the driving force adopts a simple harmonic form with its amplitude chosen according to , while the driving frequency chosen as the harmonic frequency. The latter can be improved by using the natural frequency of the system in response to the potential if its anharmonicity is strong. By comparing to the accurate numeric results from discrete variable representation calculations for a set of diatomic species, it is shown that the present method is able to capture the large part of anharmonicity, being competitive with the wave function‐based vibrational second‐order perturbation theory, for the whole frequency range from ∼4400 cm−1 (H2) to ∼160 cm−1 (Na2). XLD shows a substantial improvement over the classical molecular dynamics which ceases to work for hard mode when zero‐point energy effects are significant. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:AbstractThe bond stretching vibrations of XF5 molecules with D3h symmetry are treated computationally on the Morse oscillator model in which the bond oscillators are coupled harmonically. Each calculation involves four parameters for two types of Morse potential and three parameters for the kinetic‐energy, potential coupling terms. The eigenvalue formula for overtone and combination states up to three are presented and can be used to predict all the vibrational energy levels from local mode molecules through normal mode molecules. For PF5, AsF5 and VF5, the coupled Morse oscillator model gives a prediction in good agreement with the experimental data.
