Abstract:Beams of Carbon nuclei are used or planned to be used in various centers for cancer treatment around the world because of their therapeutic advantages over proton beams. The knowledge of the fragmentation of Carbon nuclei when they interact with the human body is important to evaluate the spatial profile of their energy deposition in the tissues, hence the damage to the tissues neighboring the tumor. In this respect, the identification of the fragmentation products is a key element. We present in this paper the charge measurement of about 3000 fragments produced by the interaction of $^{12}$C nuclei with an energy of 400 MeV/nucleon in a detector simulating the density of the human body. The nuclear emulsion technique is used, by means of the so-called Emulsion Cloud Chamber. In order to achieve the large dynamical range required for the charge measurement, the recently developed techniques of the emulsion controlled fading are used. The nuclear emulsions are inspected using fast automated microscopes recently developed. A charge assignment efficiency of more than 99% is achieved. The separation of Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, Berillium, Boron and Carbon can be achieved at two standard deviations or considerably more, according to the track length available for the measurement.

Production Yield of C-H Cluster From Carbon Material Bombarded by MeV Ions

Abstract:Using the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry method , the production yield of C-H cluster from carbon material bombarded by MeV ions was investigated .In the experiment ,Si+ and Au2+ ions generated by the 2 × 1.7MV tandem accelerator of Peking University were chosen as the primary ion beams .The mass of the secondary ion was calibrated by the sample with known mass .By analyzing the mass spectrum of the secondary ion bombarded by different ions ,it is found that the yield is related to the lateral straggling of ions in the material at this energy region .

Identification of Heavy Ions by Imaging Individual Particle Tracks in CF4-filled Gas Scintillation Detectors

Abstract:We propose a novel method for identification of heavy charged particles, based on the principle that the distance between the Bragg peak position and the terminal position (Dpt) of an energetic ion track varies with the specie of the heavy charged particle. Online measurements can be achieved by imaging individual particle tracks in CF4-filled gas scintillation detectors using a real-time scientific camera. By calculating the integration of the image intensity along the recorded track, experimental Bragg curves can be obtained and then Dpt values can be extracted promptly. Proof-of-principle experiments have been performed with 6.30 MeV 1H, 5.49 MeV 4He, and 46.50 MeV 7Li ions. A number of clear individual ion tracks were imaged and analyzed, with the satisfactory results that both the type and energy of each ions were identified precisely, demonstrating good identification capability of the proposed method. Therefore, this study is of particularly importance not only in methodology but also in practical for online identification of heavy charged particles in many fields such as space radiation detection and nuclear reaction diagnostic experiments.

Abstract:The emission yields of H, H-2, H-3 and heavy ions from carbon nanotubes under bombardments of Si and Si-2 clusters in an energy range of 0.3-3 MeV per atom are measured by using the time-of-flight technique (TOF). The emission yields of the secondary ions increase with increasing energy of Si and the electronic stopping processes play an important role. The enhanced emission yields of secondary ions induced by Si2 clusters at the low energies are clearly seen and attributed to the vicinage effect of the nuclear collision processes of cluster constituents and the secondary ion emissions are still dominated by electronic stopping processes at high energies.

Abstract:The products of fast ions H+, H-2(+) and H-3(+) with the energy of 0.6 to 1.8MeV passing through carbon films were measured. The yields of neutral atom H and negative ion H- for H+ at energies of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.6 and 1.8MeV were obtained, respectively. The fitted yield curves as function of velocity of projectile agreed with experimental results very well. The transmission of H-2(+), H-3(+) at energies 1.2MeV and 1.8MeV through carbon film were also measured. The fitted transmission curves as function of dwell time of H-2(+), H-3(+) in carbon film were also obtained. Theoretical analysis and discussion on the electron loss and capture possibility in solids were made.

Abstract:We describe a new technique for MeV heavy-ion backscattering analysis of trace heavy elements on the surface and near surface. Pulse pileup problems are eliminated by choice of incidence ion mass M1, which is the same as or larger then that of bulk atom M2. Using 3 MeV Si beam, we could measure quantities of arsenic implanted in silicon down to 2×1012 atoms/cm2. Experimental results also show that sensitivity for impurity element on silicon substrate is as high as 2.2 ×109 atoms/cm2 for Au.

Abstract:In order to measure atomic number (Z) of materials, we present a Z identification method based on MV X-ray scattering spectra analysis in this paper. Scattering photons, which include positron annihilation photons, bremsstrahlung photons and Compton scattered photons, are generated by interactions of X-rays with matters and carry their Z information. A LaBr3(Ce) detector is used for its short resolving time (<; 100 ns) to measure scattered photons to alleviate pulse pileup problem in the 5 μs X-ray pulse duration. ADC with high sampling rate of 120 MHz and high resolution of 14-bit is used to digitize signal waveform from the preamplifier of the LaBr3(Ce) detector. An offline algorithm is designed to reconstruct scattering spectra. Appropriate shielding structure is set up to reduce the number of transmission photons from accelerator target and scattering photons in environment that enter the detector. These designs ensure effective acquisition of scattering photons in the intense pulsed radiation field. We investigated 10 materials with Z from 13 to 82. Preliminary experimental results show that Z of different materials can be determined successfully.
Acceleration of C2 +-C8 + clusters to MeV energies

Abstract:The beams of C2 +-C8 + clusters were accelerated to 3MeV in a small 1.7 MV tandem accelerator (5SDH-2) imported from NEC, USA. The stripper is a recirculating stripping system equipped with a small turbomolecular pump. The beam intensity of small C-cluster is large enough for some physical experiments. The results show that the gas density in the stripper cell is an important parameter for obtaining maximum Cm + cluster beam. Some dependence of the optimal current of C-cluster on the stripping gas density has been found.

Abstract:Electron(s) capture in highly charged ions collision with atoms and molecules is a fundamental process related to the electron transition between bound states belongs to two atomic-centers. The X-ray emission following electron capture is important for X-ray astrophysical modeling, fusion plasma diagnosing, and ion irradiated biophysics. Over past decades, momentum-imaging cold-target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy is one of significantly developed techniques and has been widely applied to measure the quantum state-selective population in electron(s) capture processes. Based on the cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy mounted at the 150 kV highly charged ion platform in Fudan University, the state-selectivity of double electron capture in 1.4-20 keV/u Ar8+ on He collision was measured, and the relative cross sections of the 3l3l’to 3l7l’ double excited states were obtained. It is found that with the increase of collision energy, more quantum state-selectivity channels are open in the double electron capture (DEC) of Ar8+-He collision. It is also found that the relative cross section of the quantum state population is strongly dependent on the collision energy of the projectile ion. This present measurement not only enriches the state-selective cross-section repository and collision dynamics for highly charged ion charge exchange processes, but also provides experimental benchmarks for the available theoretical calculations.
A Detector System for Measurement of Pro jectile Breakup Reaction in Carbon Ion Tumour Therapy

Abstract:For estimating the influence of the projectile breakup reaction on carbon ion tumour therapy, a detector system was built by IMP(Institute of Modern Physics), Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), and used to detect the results of the reaction. The system is composed of start detector, water target system, charged fragments detector system and neutron detector system. The performance of the detector system was tested in the experiment of 5 cm thick water target bombarded by 250 MeV/u carbon beam. The results reveal that the charged fragments, such as elements H, He, Li, Be, B and C, were identified clearly by ?E-E and?E-TOF techniques. The angular distributions of some charged fragments were obtained by calculating the charge-changing cross-sections of the fragments(e.g. elements H and He isotopes in our work). The test results prove that the charged fragment detector system achieves the design aim.

Abstract:Diagnostics of the carbon atoms, ions, and clusters sputtered from a graphite surface under 10 keV Xe ion bombardments reveals the presence of neutral carbon clusters and positively charged species in the photo-emission spectra. The observed absence of the positively charged clusters in the mass spectra by a velocity analyzer is supplemented by the presence of the negatively charged monatomic, diatomic, triatomic and quatratomic clusters.. The velocity spectra are dominated by the negative C1, C2, C3 and C4. The latter two are observed having much reduced peak intensities . These results may help us to understand the contribution of neutral and charged species in the heavy-ion sputtering of graphite and the energetics of soot formation. Xe is chosen being the heaviest noble gas ion irradiating at not too high energy i.e 10 keV.
Detection of High-Z Materials Using 7mev X-rays Scattering

Abstract:By detecting and analyzing positron annihilation photons, bremsstrahlung photons and Compton scattered photons that are produced after the interaction of X-rays and matter, atomic number may be identified to find concealed SNM (special nuclear material). A code of reading and analyzing data from PTRAC card from MCNP5 simulation has been designed to explore the birth history of each photon. The simulation results indicate that the optimum detection angle is 145 degree and show that the information of Z (especially for high Z) of inspected materials can be extracted effectively. An experimental facility based on 7 MeV LINAC and LaBr3(Ce) detector has been set up for experimental study. Preliminary results demonstrate the possibility of high Z materials identification.

Abstract:The combination of MeV/Nucleon ion irradiation (e.g. 133 MeV Xe) and high energy synchrotron x-ray characterization (e.g. at the Argonne Advanced Photon Source, APS) provides a powerful characterization method to understand radiation effects and to rapidly screen materials for the nuclear reactor environment. Ions in this energy range penetrate similar to 10 mu m into materials. Over this range, the physical interactions vary (electronic stopping, nuclear stopping and added interstitials). Spatially specific x-ray (and TEM and nanoindentation) analysis allow individual quantification of these various effects. Hard x-rays provide the penetration depth needed to analyze even nuclear fuels. Here, this combination of synchrotron x-ray and MeV/Nucleon ion irradiation is demonstrated on U-Mo fuels. A preliminary look at HT-9 steels is also presented. We suggest that a hard x-ray facility with in situ MeV/nucleon irradiation capability would substantially accelerate the rate of discovery for extreme materials. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:We built a new instrumental setup for measuring ion distributions in the size range [1.3 - 6] nm. The implementation of an high transmission inlet increased the total transmission efficiency to more than 6% at 1.47 nm mobility equivalent diameter, allowing the detection of ions at atmospheric concentrations. The size resolution of our measurements is as high as 6. We characterized the instrument in the laboratory and carried out measurements during the CLOUD7 campaign. We compared the results obtained with the Neutral cluster and Air Ion spectrometer finding very good agreement.

Abstract:Mass spectrometry is powerful tool for environmental and atmospheric chemistry analysis. Modern mass spectrometers demonstrate low detection limits, high sensitivity, and high resolving power. However, such high performance is not always enough to identify ambient ion clusters due to the clusters braking at the atmospheric pressure-to-vacuum interface of mass spectrometer. This study presents a high resolution ion mobility spectrometer - time-of-flight mass spectrometer (IMS-TOF) in the CLOUD experiment. This combination of orthogonal analytical techniques allows obtaining structural information in addition to mass-to-charge separation.

Abstract:Measurements of the total reaction cross section for C12-16, N14-17, and O16-18 on carbon target at intermediate energies were performed on the Radioactive Ion Beam Line of the Heavy ion Research Facility in Lanzhou. A larger enhancement of sigma(R) for C-15 was observed than for its neighbors. Evidence for possible anomalous nuclear structure in C-15 was revealed in the analysis of the total reaction cross section in terms of the difference factor d.

Abstract:The motivation for this study was to explore a new method to test the particle spatial distribution for a therapeutic carbon beam. CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors were irradiated to a 276.5 MeV u-1mono-energy carbon beam at the heavy ion facility in the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center. The spatial distribution of the primary carbon beam and secondary fragments in a water phantom were systematically analyzed both in the transverse direction (perpendicular to the projection direction of the primary beam) and at different depths in the longitudinal direction (along the projection direction of the primary beam) with measured tracks on the CR-39 detectors. Meanwhile, the theoretically spatial distribution and linear energy transfer (LET) spectra of the primary beam and secondary fragments were calculated using the Monte Carlo (MC) toolkit Geant4. The results showed that the CR-39 detectors are capable of providing high lateral resolution of carbon ion at different depths. In the range of the primary carbon beam, the beam width simulated with MC is in good agreement with that of experimental measurement. The track size registered in the CR-39 has a good correlation with the particle LET. These findings indicate that the CR-39 can be used for measuring both the particle flux and its spatial distribution of carbon ions.

Abstract:Cross sections of the 10B(n, α)7Li reaction (including the total, the "leaking" alpha, forward alpha and backward alpha parts) at En = 4.0 and 5.0 MeV were measured using an asymmetrical twin gridded ionization chamber and two back-to-back 10B samples. Measurements were performed at the 4.5 MV Van de Graaff accelerator of Peking University. Monoenergetic neutrons were produced through the 2H(d, n)3 He reaction with a deuterium gas target. Absolute neutron flux was determined by a 238U sample set inside the gridded ionization chamber and a BF3 long counter was employed as a neutron flux monitor and for normalization. The present results are compared with previous measurements and evaluations.

Abstract:The time projection chamber (TPC) is based on detailed recording of particle ionization processes and can achieve three-dimensional measurement of particle tracks. Therefore, it has broad application prospects in fission cross section measurement. This paper introduces a TPC for measuring fission cross sections and tests the particle identification ability of this detector using a 252 Cf source. The measured branching ratio of α/SF is very close to the standard value, with a relative error of 3.83%.
