Abstract:We discuss the phase dynamics in the system of a set of nonlinear coupled oscillators. We find a direct and simple geometric method to observe the geometric phase for this system, and it provides a possibility for the experimental measurements.

Abstract:Measure synchronization (MS) is a novel phenomenon which can be found in some coupled Hamiltonian systems (HS). In this paper, we built a new model called two coupled phase oscillators system (CPOS), and found that, under the appropriate initial conditions, it will meet a critical phenomenon in the phase space as the coupling strength increases. We also found the critical state by introducing the Poincaré section technique. We established a new formula for the critical coupling strength by analyzing the HS model, and extended this formula to the CPOS. The numerically analytical results show the reason why the measure synchronization of CPOS does not exist.

Abstract:We study the collective dynamics of a non-dissipative two-coupled pendulum system, including phase synchronization（PS） and measure synchronization（MS）. We find that as the coupling intensity between the two pendulums increases, the PS happens prior to the MS. We also present a three-dimensional phase space representation of MS, from which a more detailed information about evolution can be obtained. Furthermore, the order parameters are introduced to describe the phase transition between PS and MS. Finally, through the analysis of the Poincar′e sections, we show that the system exhibits separatrix crossing behavior right at the MS transition point, and as the total initial energy increases, the Hamiltonian chaos will arise with separatrix chaos at the chaotic MS transition point.

Abstract:We investigated the locking behaviors of coupled limit-cycle oscillators with phase and amplitude dynamics. We focused on how the dynamics are affected by inhomogeneous coupling strength and by angular and radial shifts in the coupling function. We performed mean-field analyses of oscillator systems with inhomogeneous coupling strength, testing Gaussian, power-law, and brain-like degree distributions. Even for oscillators with identical intrinsic frequencies and intrinsic amplitudes, we found that the coupling strength distribution and coupling function generated a wide repertoire of phase and amplitude dynamics. These included fully and partially locked states in which high-degree or low-degree nodes would phase-lead the network. The mean-field analytical findings were confirmed via numerical simulations. The results suggest that, in oscillator systems in which individual nodes can independently vary their amplitude over time, qualitatively different dynamics can be produced via shifts in the coupling strength distribution and the coupling form. Of particular relevance to information flows in oscillator networks, changes in the non-specific drive to individual nodes can make high-degree nodes phase-lag or phase-lead the rest of the network.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the investigation of the dynamics of novel 2-DOF coupled oscillators. The system consists of a linear oscillator (main structure) and an attached lightweight nonlinear oscillator, called a nonlinear energy sink (NES), under harmonic forcing in the regime of 1:1:1 resonance. The studied NES has geometrically nonlinear stiffness and damping. Due to the degeneracies that the NES brings to the system, diverse bifurcation structures and rich dynamical phenomena such as nonlinear beating and strongly modulated response occur. The latter two phenomena represent different patterns of energy transfer. To capture the bifurcation structure, the slow flow of the system can be acquired with the use of the complex-averaging method. Furthermore, by applying the bifurcation analysis technique, we get curve boundaries of several bifurcation points in the parameter space. These boundaries will induce different types of folding structures, which can lead to complicated patterns of strongly modulated responses, in which intense energy transfer from the main structure to NES occurs. To study the necessary parameter conditions of strongly modulated responses, we analyzed the dynamics of different time scales of the slow flow in detail and determined the corresponding parameter ranges finally. It is worth noting that the small parameter ε may have a qualitative impact on the dynamics of the system.

Abstract:Chaotic dynamics of fractional (non-integer) order systems have begun to attract much attention in recent years. In this paper, we study the phase and lag synchronization in coupled two fractional order chaotic oscillators. It is shown that with the increase of coupling strength, the system first undergoes a transition to phase synchronization, and when the coupling strength is increased further, another transition to lag synchronization occurs. It is further shown that the system with two chaotic oscillators of different orders can also exhibit phase synchronization phenomena, although the identical synchronization is impossible in this case.
Higher-Order Network Interactions through Phase Reduction for Oscillators with Phase-Dependent Amplitude

Abstract:Coupled oscillator networks provide mathematical models for interacting periodic processes. If the coupling is weak, phase reduction -- the reduction of the dynamics onto an invariant torus -- captures the emergence of collective dynamical phenomena, such as synchronization. While a first-order approximation of the dynamics on the torus may be appropriate in some situations, higher-order phase reductions become necessary, for example, when the coupling strength increases. However, these are generally hard to compute and thus they have only been derived in special cases: This includes globally coupled Stuart--Landau oscillators, where the limit cycle of the uncoupled nonlinear oscillator is circular as the amplitude is independent of the phase. We go beyond this restriction and derive second-order phase reductions for coupled oscillators for arbitrary networks of coupled nonlinear oscillators with phase-dependent amplitude, a scenario more reminiscent of real-world oscillations. We analyze how the deformation of the limit cycle affects the stability of important dynamical states, such as full synchrony and splay states. By identifying higher-order phase interaction terms with hyperedges of a hypergraph, we obtain natural classes of coupled phase oscillator dynamics on hypergraphs that adequately capture the dynamics of coupled limit cycle oscillators.

Abstract:The conditions under which synchronization is achieved for a one-dimensional ring of identical phase oscillators with Kuramoto-like local coupling are studied. The system is approached in the weakly coupled approximation as phase units. Instead of global couplings, nearest-neighbor interaction is assumed. Units are pairwise coupled by a Kuramoto term driven by their phase differences. The system exhibits a rich set of behaviors depending on the balance between the natural frequency of isolated units and the self-feedback. The case of two oscillators is solved analytically, while a numerical approach is used for $N>2$. Building from Kuramoto, the approach to synchronization, when possible, is studied through a local complex order parameter. The system can eventually evolve as a set of coupled local communities towards a given phase value. However, the approach to the stationary state shows a non-monotonous non-trivial dynamic.

Abstract:Oscillatory dynamics pervades the universe, appearing in systems of all scales. Whilst autonomous oscillatory dynamics has been extensively studied and is well understood, the very important problem of non-autonomous oscillatory dynamics is less well understood. Here, we provide a framework for non-autonomous oscillatory dynamics, within which we can define intermittent phenomena such as intermittent phase synchronisation. Moreover, we demonstrate this framework with a coupled pair of non-autonomous phase oscillators as well as a higher-dimensional system comprising of two interacting phase-oscillator networks.

Abstract:We study the geometric phase factors underlying the classical and the corresponding quantum dynamics of a driven nonlinear oscillator exhibiting chaotic dynamics. For the classical problem, we compute the geometric phase factors associated with the phase space trajectories using Frenet-Serret formulation. For the corresponding quantum problem, the geometric phase associated with the time evolution of the wave function is computed. Our studies suggest that the classical geometric phase may be related to the the difference in the quantum geometric phases between two neighboring eigenstates.

Abstract:By characterizing the phase dynamics in coupled oscillators, we gain insights into the fundamental phenomena of complex systems. The collective dynamics in oscillatory systems are often described by order parameters, which are insufficient for identifying more specific behaviors. To improve this situation, we propose a topological approach that constructs the quantitative features describing the phase evolution of oscillators. Here, the phase data are mapped into a high-dimensional space at each time, and the topological features describing the shape of the data are subsequently extracted from the mapped points. These features are extended to time-variant topological features by adding the evolution time as an extra dimension in the topological feature space. The time-variant features provide crucial insights into the evolution of phase dynamics. Combining these features with the kernel method, we characterize the multi-clustered synchronized dynamics during the early evolution stages. Finally, we demonstrate that our method can qualitatively explain chimera states. The experimental results confirmed the superiority of our method over those based on order parameters, especially when the available data are limited to the early-stage dynamics.

Geometric phase for nonlinear oscillators from perturbative renormalization group

Abstract:We formulate a renormalization group approach to a general nonlinear oscillator problem. The approach is based on the exact group law obeyed by solutions of the corresponding ordinary differential equation. We consider both the autonomous models with time-independent parameters, as well as nonautonomous models with slowly varying parameters. We show that the renormalization group equations for the nonautonomous case can be used to determine the geometric phase acquired by the oscillator during the change of its parameters. We illustrate the obtained results by applying them to the Van der Pol, and Van der Pol-Duffing models.

Abstract:We generalize our recent approach to reconstruction of phase dynamics of coupled oscillators from data [B. Kralemann et al., Phys. Rev. E, 77, 066205 (2008)] to cover the case of small networks of coupled periodic units. Starting from the multivariate time series, we first reconstruct genuine phases and then obtain the coupling functions in terms of these phases. The partial norms of these coupling functions quantify directed coupling between oscillators. We illustrate the method by different network motifs for three coupled oscillators and for random networks of five and nine units. We also discuss nonlinear effects in coupling.

Abstract:Systems of dynamical elements exhibiting spontaneous rhythms are found in various fields of science and engineering, including physics, chemistry, biology, physiology, and mechanical and electrical engineering. Such dynamical elements are often modeled as nonlinear limit-cycle oscillators. In this article, we briefly review phase reduction theory, which is a simple and powerful method for analyzing the synchronization properties of limit-cycle oscillators exhibiting rhythmic dynamics. Through phase reduction theory, we can systematically simplify the nonlinear multi-dimensional differential equations describing a limit-cycle oscillator to a one-dimensional phase equation, which is much easier to analyze. Classical applications of this theory, i.e., the phase locking of an oscillator to a periodic external forcing and the mutual synchronization of interacting oscillators, are explained. Further, more recent applications of this theory to the synchronization of non-interacting oscillators induced by common noise and the dynamics of coupled oscillators on complex networks are discussed. We also comment on some recent advances in phase reduction theory for noise-driven oscillators and rhythmic spatiotemporal patterns.

Abstract:In this article we study synchronization of systems of homogeneous phase-coupled oscillators with plastic coupling strengths and arbitrary underlying topology. The dynamics of the coupling strength between two oscillators is governed by the phase difference between these oscillators. We show that, under mild assumptions, such systems are gradient systems, and always achieve frequency synchronization. Furthermore, we provide sufficient stability and instability conditions that are based on results from algebraic graph theory. For a special case when underlying topology is a tree, we formulate a criterion (necessary and sufficient condition) of stability of equilibria. For both, tree and arbitrary topologies, we provide sufficient conditions for phase-locking, i.e. convergence to a stable equilibrium almost surely. We additionally find conditions when the system possesses a unique stable equilibrium, and thus, almost global stability follows. Several examples are used to demonstrate variety of equilibria the system has, their dependence on system's parameters, and to illustrate differences in behavior of systems with constant and plastic coupling strengths.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate collective phase synchronization between interacting groups of globally coupled noisy identical phase oscillators exhibiting macroscopic rhythms. Using the phase reduction method, we derive coupled collective phase equations describing the macroscopic rhythms of the groups from microscopic Langevin phase equations of the individual oscillators via nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations. For sinusoidal microscopic coupling, we determine the type of the collective phase coupling function, i.e., whether the groups exhibit in-phase or anti-phase synchronization. We show that the macroscopic rhythms can exhibit effective anti-phase synchronization even if the microscopic phase coupling between the groups is in-phase, and vice versa. Moreover, near the onset of collective oscillations, we analytically obtain the collective phase coupling function using center-manifold and phase reductions of the nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations.

Insights into oscillator network dynamics using a phase-isostable framework

Abstract:Networks of coupled nonlinear oscillators can display a wide range of emergent behaviors under the variation of the strength of the coupling. Network equations for pairs of coupled oscillators where the dynamics of each node is described by the evolution of its phase and slowest decaying isostable coordinate have previously been shown to capture bifurcations and dynamics of the network, which cannot be explained through standard phase reduction. An alternative framework using isostable coordinates to obtain higher-order phase reductions has also demonstrated a similar descriptive ability for two oscillators. In this work, we consider the phase-isostable network equations for an arbitrary but finite number of identical coupled oscillators, obtaining conditions required for the stability of phase-locked states including synchrony. For the mean-field complex Ginzburg–Landau equation where the solutions of the full system are known, we compare the accuracy of the phase-isostable network equations and higher-order phase reductions in capturing bifurcations of phase-locked states. We find the former to be the more accurate and, therefore, employ this to investigate the dynamics of globally linearly coupled networks of Morris–Lecar neuron models (both two and many nodes). We observe qualitative correspondence between results from numerical simulations of the full system and the phase-isostable description demonstrating that in both small and large networks, the phase-isostable framework is able to capture dynamics that the first-order phase description cannot.

Abstract:The Hong–Strogatz (HS) model of globally coupled phase oscillators with attractive and repulsive interactions reflects the fact that each individual (oscillator) has its own attitude (attractive or repulsive) to the same environment (mean field). Previous studies on HS model focused mainly on the stable states on Ott–Antonsen (OA) manifold. In this paper, the eigenvalues of the Jacobi matrix of each fixed point in HS model are explicitly derived, with the aim to understand the local dynamics around each fixed point. Phase transitions are described according to relative population and coupling strength. Besides, the dynamics off OA manifold is studied.
