Abstract:We formulate a renormalization group approach to a general nonlinear oscillator problem. The approach is based on the exact group law obeyed by solutions of the corresponding ordinary differential equation. We consider both the autonomous models with time-independent parameters, as well as nonautonomous models with slowly varying parameters. We show that the renormalization group equations for the nonautonomous case can be used to determine the geometric phase acquired by the oscillator during the change of its parameters. We illustrate the obtained results by applying them to the Van der Pol, and Van der Pol-Duffing models.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to address the problem of how to calculate the geometric phase of nonlinear oscillators when parameters change slowly. Specifically, the authors propose a new approach based on the Renormalization Group (RG) method to handle general nonlinear oscillator problems. This method is applicable not only to autonomous systems (i.e., systems with time-independent parameters) but also to non-autonomous systems (i.e., systems with parameters that change slowly over time). Through this method, the authors are able to derive the geometric phase acquired by the oscillator during the parameter variation in non-autonomous cases. ### Main Research Content 1. **Application of the Renormalization Group Method**: - The authors first introduce the basic principles of the Renormalization Group method and apply it to the problem of nonlinear oscillators. - They use exact group laws to improve perturbation theory and eliminate secular terms in long-term behavior. 2. **Calculation of the Geometric Phase**: - For classical dissipative systems, when system parameters change slowly, there exists a geometric phase similar to the Hannay angle or Berry phase. - The authors demonstrate how to calculate this geometric phase through the Renormalization Group equations. 3. **Application to Specific Models**: - The authors apply this method to two well-known models: the Van der Pol oscillator and the Van der Pol-Duffing oscillator. - Through these models, the authors calculate in detail the geometric phase of the oscillator during the slow parameter variation. ### Research Background - **Geometric Phase in Classical Dissipative Systems**: - In classical dissipative systems, there exists a stable limit cycle, and when system parameters change slowly, the system accumulates a geometric phase. - This geometric phase is similar to the Hannay angle and Berry phase but is applicable to non-Hamiltonian systems. - **Development of the Renormalization Group Method**: - The Renormalization Group method was initially discovered in quantum field theory and later applied to problems in mathematical physics. - This method effectively eliminates divergent terms in perturbation theory and studies the asymptotic behavior of systems. ### Main Contributions - **New Calculation Method**: - A systematic method based on the Renormalization Group method is proposed to calculate the geometric phase of nonlinear oscillators when parameters change slowly. - This method is applicable to both autonomous and non-autonomous systems. - **Validation with Specific Models**: - The effectiveness of this method is validated through the Van der Pol and Van der Pol-Duffing oscillator models. - The geometric phase of these models during parameter variation is calculated and compared with known results. ### Conclusion This paper successfully proposes and validates a new approach based on the Renormalization Group method to calculate the geometric phase of nonlinear oscillators when parameters change slowly. This method not only provides new theoretical insights but also has been validated in specific models, offering a powerful tool for research in related fields.
