Abstract:Proposed is a new method to reduce the hysteresis of piezoelectric actuators. A reference piezoelectric actuator driven by a charge controller was used to obtain the driving voltage, which was applied to a target actuator via a suitable voltage amplifier. Experiments showed that a reduction of 84-90 at frequencies from 0.05 to 10Hz was obtained compared with the direct voltage drive method. This method has the ability of affording very high voltage for bulk piezoelectric actuators to reach maximum elongation, and an easy common ground wiring which is feasible for practical piezoelectric element driving circuits, compared with the traditional charge drive for eliminating piezoelectric element's hysteresis. © 2012 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
A Piezoelectric Ceramic Actuator Drive DC Adjustable Driving Power Supply Design

Abstract:A piezoelectric ceramic activator adjustable driving power supply is designed in the paper based on the switch principle.The author prepares 7groups of LM317,a three terminal adjustable shunt regulator with guaranteed temperature stability,in superposition series to give stable of output voltage.The output voltage changes with the changing of duty cycle of optical coupler in the circuit.The result of the test of the circuit shows that the dynamic driving power supply with piezoelectric actuator as the driving element in the way mentioned above is able to give a stable output of 0~200V DC.

Abstract:Piezoelectric actuators have traditionally been driven by voltage amplifiers. When driven at large voltages these actuators exhibit a significant amount of distortion, known as hysteresis, which may reduce the stability robustness of the system in feedback control applications. Piezoelectric transducers are known to exhibit less hysteresis when driven with current or charge rather than voltage. Despite this advantage, such methods have found little practical application due to the poor low frequency response of present current and charge driver designs. In this paper, a new piezoelectric amplifier based on current switching is presented which can reduce hysteresis. Special circuits and a hybrid control algorithm realize quick and precise positioning. Experimental results demonstrate that the amplifier can be used for dynamic and static applications and low frequency bandwidths can also be achieved.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel and cost-effective drive circuit for supplying a piezoelectric ceramic actuator, which combines a dual boost AC-DC converter with a coupled inductor and a half-bridge resonant DC-AC inverter into a single-stage architecture with power-factor-correction (PFC) and soft-switching characteristics. The coupled inductor of the dual boost AC-DC converter sub-circuit is designed to work in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), so the PFC function can be realized in the proposed drive circuit. The resonant tank of the half-bridge resonant inverter sub-circuit is designed as an inductive load, so that the two power switches in the presented drive circuit can achieve zero-voltage switching (ZVS) characteristics. A 50 W-rated prototype drive circuit providing a piezoelectric ceramic actuator has been successfully implemented in this paper. From the experimental results at 110 V input utility-line voltage, the drive circuit has the characteristics of high power factor and low input current total-harmonic-distortion factor, and two power switches have ZVS characteristics. Therefore, satisfactory outcomes from measured results prove the function of the proposed drive circuit.

Abstract:The principle and limitations of existing driving powers for piezoelectric actuators are analyzed first, then a newly developed driving power is presented in detail. Experiments show that when input signals are dynamic,such as rectangle wave or square wave,its output can follow input very well. With its excellent dynamic performance,the new driving power can meet the needs of dynamic driving of piezoelectric elements.

Abstract:In the ultrasonic welding system, the ultrasonic power supply drives the piezoelectric transducer to work in the resonant state to realize the conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy. In order to obtain stable ultrasonic energy and ensure welding quality, this paper designs a driving power supply based on an improved LC matching network with two functions, frequency tracking and power regulation. First, in order to analyze the dynamic branch of the piezoelectric transducer, we propose an improved LC matching network, in which three voltage RMS values are used to analyze the dynamic branch and discriminate the series resonant frequency. Further, the driving power system is designed using the three RMS voltage values as feedback. A fuzzy control method is used for frequency tracking. The double closed-loop control method of the power outer loop and the current inner loop is used for power regulation. Through MATLAB software simulation and experimental testing, it is verified that the power supply can effectively track the series resonant frequency and control the power while being continuously adjustable. This study has promising applications in ultrasonic welding technology with complex loads.

Abstract:Piezoelectric ceramic actuators utilize an inverse piezoelectric effect to generate high-frequency vibration energy and are widely used in ultrasonic energy conversion circuits. This paper presents a novel drive circuit with input-current shaping (ICS) and soft-switching features which consists of a front AC-DC full-wave bridge rectifier and a rear DC-AC circuit combining a stacked boost converter and a half-bridge resonant inverter for driving a piezoelectric ceramic actuator. To enable ICS functionality in the proposed drive circuit, the inductor of the stacked boost converter sub-circuit is designed to operate in boundary-conduction mode (BCM). In order to allow the two power switches in the proposed drive circuit to achieve zero-voltage switching (ZVS) characteristics, the resonant circuit of the half-bridge resonant inverter sub-circuit is designed as an inductive load. In this paper, a prototype drive circuit for providing piezoelectric ceramic actuators was successfully implemented. Experimental results tested at 110 V input utility voltage show that high power factor (PF > 0.97), low input current total harmonic distortion (THD < 16%), and ZVS characteristics of the power switch were achieved in the prototype drive circuit.

Abstract:In this article, a dual-stage converter driving for a piezoelectric actuator based on flyback circuit was designed and implemented, which could be applied in a micro robot. A low-voltage direct current could be converted to a high-voltage alternating current through flyback circuit and direct current/alternating current circuit in low-power condition. In the direct current/direct current stage, the charging and discharging process was realized to generate a high voltage bias from a low voltage directly supplied by battery. Then, the high voltage was converted into alternating waveform by an energy recovery circuit in direct current/alternating current stage. Experiments were conducted to verify the ability of the proposed converter to drive a 100-V-input piezoelectric bimorph actuator using a prototype 108 mg (excluding printed circuit board mass), 169 (13 × 13) mm 2 , and 500-mW converter. According to the experimental results, this converter could be used for driving piezoelectric actuator applied in micro robot.

Abstract:This work introduced the piezoelectric(PZT) actuator's working principle,pros and cons,and performance of output force and displacement.High energy density and fast frequency are the main reasons for employing the PZT actuator in hydraulic valves.Two types of PZT actuator namely the stack and bender were presented.The stack has faster response and larger force compared to the bender. The key technologies of micro displacement amplifying temperature compensation, power supply driving and controller of the PZT actuator were briefly introduced.The typical structures of the direct,pilot,hybrid PZT valves were summarized.The direct valve has fast response and low flow rate the pilot valve has higher flow rate,and the hybrid valve has high flow rate and lower response.An innovative piezoelectric digital valve was brought forward to overcome the shortcoming of small displacement and temperature dependence of a piezoelectric actuator.Simulation showed that the novel valve could obtain the frequency of 200 Hz,pressure of 20 MPa and flow rate of 10 L/min.
A new hysteresis modeling and optimization for piezoelectric actuators based on asymmetric Prandtl-Ishlinskii model

Abstract:Piezoelectric actuators are core components in micromanipulation systems in the field of biomedicine. The asymmetrical hysteresis of piezoelectric actuators greatly affects its performance, and the existing asymmetric hysteresis models are either inaccurate or complicated. In this paper, an accurate and simple asymmetric hysteresis model is proposed based on the Prandtl-Ishlinskii (PI) model. Firstly, the Play operator is modified to be asymmetric to enhance its flexibility, and the influence of parameters on the operator is analyzed. Secondly, the Asymmetric Prandtl-Ishlinskii (API) model is proposed based on the asymmetric Play operator and verified by experiment. Compared with several existing models, the API model can describe the asymmetric hysteresis in a more accurate and simple manner under the same conditions. Thirdly, the parameters of the API model are optimized. Compared with the unoptimized API model, the optimized one can reduce the number of parameters and maintain high accuracy. Furthermore, the influence of the order on accuracy is discussed, and a guidance for selection of the order is provided. Last but not least, the optimized API model is used to compensate for the hysteresis. The experimental results show that the compensator based on this model can effectively suppress the hysteresis of the piezoelectric actuator. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Piezoelectric actuators have a broader prospect than conventional actuators (such as DC motors) in the field of micro robot drive due to its high efficiency and high power density. However, considering the electric design, there are two main challenges of the piezoelectric actuators for the microrobot applications: generating high voltage from low-voltage power supplies and recovering unused energy from piezoelectric actuators. It is difficult for traditional drive circuits to solve these problems under the premise of miniaturization. In this paper, a highly efficient piezoelectric actuator drive circuit topology is proposed to satisfy the mass and power requirements. Meanwhile, we present the electrical characteristics and drive requirements of piezoelectric actuators, the design and optimization of the drive circuit topology, the appropriate control methods of the drive circuit, and the manufacturing method of the flexible circuit.

Abstract:The piezoelectric transformer has the advantage of high power density, high boost ratio and low electromagnetic interference. It is often used to generate AC and DC high voltage, but there are few studies on the generation of pulse high voltage. In this paper, a quasi-pulse power supply system based on piezoelectric transformer is proposed and designed. The control of the power supply system consists of two parts. The first part is the tracking control of the resonant frequency of the piezoelectric transformer, and the second part is the specific harmonic control method of the piezoelectric transformer. The hardware circuit of the power supply system is designed, and a fast decomposition calculation method of resonant current component is proposed to realize the fast sampling of harmonic amplitude and phase. A prototype of pulse power supply based on piezoelectric transformer is designed and manufactured, and a plasma jet is generated using the prototype.

Abstract:<p>Piezoelectric actuators are unique driving force‐generation devices, which can transfer input electric energy into force, displacement, or movement outputs efficiently and precisely via piezoelectric effect‐based electromechanical coupling instead of electromagnetic induction. In comparison with traditional electromagnetic actuators, the most important features of the piezoelectric actuators are their compact size, flexible design, and ability to provide nanometer or sub‐micrometer positioning. Here, recent progress in nonresonance piezoelectric actuators including multilayer ceramic actuators, step motors, inertial motors, and resonance ultrasonic motors, such as linear motors, rotary motors, multidegree of freedom motors, and microelectromechanical system actuators, is comprehensively presented. The working principles and properties of these actuators are explained, and the piezoelectric materials and configurations, fabrication, and applications are provided. Furthermore, from the aspects of materials, designs and applications, challenges and outlooks for future developments of piezoelectric actuators and motors are also discussed.</p>

Abstract:According to basic characteristic of piezoelectric actuator, we calculate out minimum basic performance parameters of driving power and develop a kind of new-type piezoelectric driving power by utilizing a power amplifier, which has high voltage output range(±200 V) and high electric current output range(200 mA, peak value electric current 300 mA). From the bode picture we analyze the reason causing amplifier self oscillation and put forward a method to suppress it. When applying sine and step signal to actuator,the driving power demonstrated excellent dynamic performance to meet the need of the complicated control.

Abstract:Significant variation in impedance under a wide range of loads increases the difficulty of frequency tracking and vibration control in high-power piezoelectric systems (HPPSs). This paper proposed a wide operating range driving and control scheme for HPPSs. We systematically analyzed the impedance characteristics and deduced the load optimization frequency. In order to provide sufficient drive capability, the inverter combined with an LC matching circuit is configured. With the aid of a transformer ratio arm bridge (TRAB) combined with a proposed pulse-based phase detector (PBPD), the proposed scheme can control the vibration amplitude and keep parallel resonance status under a wide range of loads. Experiments conducted under actual operating conditions verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme under the modal resistance range from 7.40 to 500 Ω and the vibration range from 20% to 100%. Moreover, with the aid of a laser displacement sensor, our scheme is verified to have a vibration amplitude control accuracy better than 2% over a tenfold load variation. This research could be helpful for the driving and control of HPPSs operating in a wide range.

Abstract:This paper proposes a piezohydraulic hybrid actuator driven by a resonant vibrator based on two rhombic micro-displacement amplifiers. The resonant piezohydraulic hybrid actuator consists of a resonant piezoelectric vibrator, a pump body, a manifold, a return valve, and an output cylinder. The vibration mode of the piezoelectric vibrator is simulated, and the working principle of the resonant piezohydraulic hybrid actuator is depicted. Then, the performance of the piezohydraulic hybrid actuator is experimentally investigated, and the effects of exciting frequency, exciting voltage, and bias pressure are analyzed. The results demonstrate that the hybrid actuator performs the best when the exciting frequency is near the resonant frequency; meanwhile, the higher the exciting voltage, the better the performance. Moreover, it indicates that a larger bias pressure will bring a larger reaction force to the vibrator and reduce the performance of the actuator system. The maximum blocked force and no-load velocity are 378 N and 4.8 mm/s, respectively, when the bias pressure is 1.5 MPa and the exciting voltage is 500 Vpp.

Abstract:In recent years, piezoelectric actuators, represented by inertial and inchworm actuators, have been widely applied because of their high accuracy and excellent responsiveness. Despite the development of various piezoelectric actuators, there remain some flaws in this technology. The sticking point is that the piezoelectric actuators based on the friction driving principle are prone to unwanted backward motion when outputting stepping motion. It is thus urgent to explore solutions from the perspectives of principle and structure. In this paper, a clamping-drive alternating operation piezoelectric actuator is proposed, the two feet of which are driven by two piezoelectric stacks, respectively. Due to double-foot alternate drive guide movement, backward movement is prevented in theory. By adopting the double-layer stator structure, integrated processing and assembly are facilitated. Meanwhile, a double flexible hinge mechanism is installed in the stator to prevent the drive foot from being overturned due to ineffectiveness and premature wear. In addition, the stator is equipped with the corresponding preload mechanism and clamping device. After the cycle action mechanism of one cycle and four steps is expounded, a model is established in this study to further demonstrate the principle. With the prototype produced, a series of experiments are performed. In addition, the amplitude of actuation of the stator is tested through amplitude experiment. The performance of the stator is evaluated by conducting experiments in the alternating step and single step actuation modes. Finally, the test results are analyzed to conclude that the actuator operating in either of these two modes can meet the practical needs of macro and micro actuation.
Investigation on Driving Characteristics of a Piezoelectric Stick–slip Actuator Based on Resonant/off-Resonant Hybrid Excitation

Abstract:A resonant/off-resonant hybrid excitation of a piezoelectric stick-slip actuator is proposed in this paper. It is accomplished by a resonant sinusoidal friction regulation wave (RSFR-wave) and an off-resonant saw-tooth wave (ORST-wave). The RSFR-wave is applied to the rapid deformation stage of the ORST-wave. In this stage, the first-order longitudinal vibration mode of the stator can be obtained. By this longitudinal vibration mode, the kinetic friction between the slider and frictional rod is obviously decreased utilizing ultrasonic friction reduction. The backward displacement is remarkably restrained. The high velocity, large mass of load and smooth displacement are achieved. The operation principle of hybrid excitation was discussed in detail, and a prototype was simulated, designed, and fabricated. A series of experiments were carried out and the results indicate that the step efficiency under the saw-tooth excitation and resonant/off-resonant hybrid excitation can realize 36.9% and 91.2%, respectively. The output velocity is increased by 147.23% relative to saw-tooth excitation. The minimum input power and the minimum driving voltage are decreased by 89.56% and 58.33%, respectively. Besides, the maximum mass of load capacity is 2.88 times that of saw-tooth excitation. The driving capacity of the actuator is increased by 466.13%.

Abstract:Piezoelectric actuators are a class of actuators that precisely transfer input electric energy into displacement, force, or movement outputs efficiently via inverse piezoelectric effect-based electromechanical coupling. Various types of piezoelectric actuators have sprung up and gained widespread use in various applications in terms of compelling attributes, such as high precision, flexibility of stoke, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and structural scalability. This paper systematically reviews the piezoelectric materials, operating principles, representative schemes, characteristics, and potential applications of each mainstream type of piezoelectric actuator. Herein, we intend to provide a more scientific and nuanced perspective to classify piezoelectric actuators into direct and indirect categories with several subcategories. In addition, this review outlines the pros and cons and the future development trends for all kinds of piezoelectric actuators by exploring the relations and mechanisms behind them. The rich content and detailed comparison can help build an in-depth and holistic understanding of piezoelectric actuators and pave the way for future research and the selection of practical applications.
