Abstract:A product design methodology based on functional feature partition is proposed to remedy the existing deficiency in modelling of the design knowledge for complex products. In this approach, a partitioning is firstly performed by mapping the functions to structures layer by layer. Based on this partition, a united product decomposing structure for standard products, optimal products and series products is developed to package the basic design knowledge of the corresponding functional structure. Then, the integrated knowledge model based on object-oriented method and hybrid inference method is constructed, in this model, knowledge can be organized at hierarchical classification and expressed with different forms. Finally, a case study on an automobile movement system is given to illustrate the effectiveness of this method

Abstract:In engineering,more and more products contain freeform surface.Because of more modeling freedoms,freeform surface modeling is very complex,and requires a deep mathematical knowledge about rational surface descriptions.These issues always puzzle the designer,and seriously fetter their inspiration.As a result,extending feature modeling systems with capabilities for freeform shapes is therefore much desired.Series of research have been carried out about the freeform feature modeling.Some fascinating results were obtained.Freeform features modeling may improve the modeling efficiency and make modeling more intuitive.This paper surveys the current state of the art in freeform feature modeling,describes freeform feature concepts,classification,parameterization,modification,and points out its shortcomings and solution.The most interesting prospects of this emerging field are outlined at the end of this paper.

Abstract:The product assembly quality is influenced by the coupling effect of multiscale geometric errors. Acquiring the influence of dimension, tolerance and microtopography on part surface quality is the key factor of improving prediction accuracy of product assembly quality. Since the current technology of part solid modeling is difficult to represent tolerance information and surface topography information in computer aided design (CAD) model uniformly, and the accuracy of product assembly simulation and analysis is reduced, the realistic geometry based feature modeling of complex part and its application in assembly quality analysis are studied in this paper. First of all, the novel concept of realistic geometry is proposed, which integrates several geometric elements such as ideal geometry, variational geometry, and fractal geometry. Then, the hierarchical representation model of realistic geometric feature information of complex part is established, and the concrete method and steps to generate the realistic geometric solid features of complex part are proposed. Finally, the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed theory in this paper are validated by assembly quality analysis of the guide rail and sliding table of the machine tool.

Abstract:On the basis of analysis for the existing methods of product modeling, the new method of product modeling suitable to the cooperative CAD/CAPP/CAM system was proposed. The concept of form feature was introduced to build the feature model and the multi-view mapping based on feature classification was used to transform the feature model into engineering model, then to map into different fields for implementation of cooperative design and manufacturing of the products.

Abstract:This article proposes a scheme for functional specification in accordance with the new generation of geometrical product specification. The scheme is to decompose a geometrical functional requirement on a complex mechanism into geometric specifications defined on key parts. The assembly is analyzed by graph theory. The general geometrical functional requirement is analyzed and decomposed if necessary, with geometrical tolerances specified on ending parts. Then geometric variation model is built according to the invariant degree of freedom of both datum reference system and tolerance zone, which is subsequently used to validate the sufficiency of the datum reference frame on positioning features, thereby inferring joints that perform key roles in affecting function. After a series of topological rules formulated and validation algorithm applied, datum reference system is validated and detailed specifications are generated on joint surfaces. Those specifications on underlying parts or subassemblies are then defined as new geometrical functional requirements and should be further developed. Therefore, the designer can carry out an effective recursive approach capable of realizing each geometric specification on key features while ensuring functional tolerancing of the entire assembly. A case study is given to validate the proposed method.

The product function-structure-model for configuration design and the optimization strategy in product configuration process are presented accordingly. Finally, an instance is given to illustrate their application in an elevator reductor project.

Abstract:Feature is the fundamental design unit in modern solid modeling systems, and this makes a well defined feature interface a matter of concernment in the component based distributed modeling environment. This paper introduces a feature based modeling service framework and proposes an interface model of feature based modeling service toward such a modeling environment, including support of remote feature attachment and semantic maintenance. A prototype based feature interface definition strategy using procedural attaching and declarative validation mechanism is discussed and how the interface model tackles with the problems in distributed environment, such as locality transparently model reusing, is also explained.

Abstract:Part modeling and assembly modeling are two aspects of product modeling,which greatly influence industrial completeness.Although the two aspects are highly integrated in current computer-aided design (CAD) systems,they are separated when concerning the perspective of process.To alleviate the issue,a product modeling method based on the phenomenon of structure pre-mapping (SPM) is proposed.Firstly,systematical analyses are conducted to study the product modeling process and the tasks needed to fulfill SPM.Secondly,the key characteristics of SPM are demonstrated and formalized to facilitate its description in CAD systems.Thirdly,the previously developed concept of assembly feature pair is used to model the design intent existed in human brain,including the abstract mating structure and behavior,providing a solid ground for realizing SPM.Fourthly,the principle of product modeling based on SPM is revealed,and a corresponding framework is presented,with its functional modules and their realization being discussed.Finally,the modeling of a head assembly (which is a component of a HP engine) is used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method,which can reinforce the integration of part modeling and assembly modeling from the perspective of process,thus enriching and facilitating the development of CAD modeling theory and technology systems.

Abstract:Feature model is an important model of capturing domain requirements. The traditional feature modeling methods extract the characteristics from the extension of the system. However, the methods fail to describe feature in details especially for embedded software product line engineering. As for these deficiencies, this paper combines the characteristics of the embedded products, with the domain ontology as the basis of feature modeling, dividing the feature modeling into building domain ontology and the feature analysis. First, it will identify the concept of mutual recognition through acquiring. describing and denoting the related domain knowledge. Then, it will divide the feature into three parts which are concept, attribute and the relation, and describe the feature from connotation and extension. It defines and normalizes feature in a clear way. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed modeling method will be verified through a ventilator embedded product line.

Abstract:Through analyzing disadvantages of the existing configuration models and combining characteristics of configuration models, a new configuration method-configuration model based on class and feature was put forward. In this method, part was considered as the element class and its special attributes were defined. The meta configuration model with legible hierarchy was established by encapsulating attributes of element class and defining its inheritance. Because of the introduction of class and feature, this configuration model was able to better integrate software development and realistic demands. Finally, a money-binding machine was taken as the example and its configuration model and object-oriented representation were illuminated.

Abstract:Aiming at limitations of existing methods mapping configurable product from function to structure,the knowledge representation of product function-structure model oriented to configuration design was proposed.With the structure features of the proposed model,the mapping method to the single-constraint product function-structure model was presented based on semi-ring weight finite state automata.Then,according to the Disjunction-Conjunction strategy,the multi-constraint product function-structure model was extracted to several relatively independent single-constraint models by methods of automata disjunction,equivalency off-redundancy.Using conjunction of solutions which to all sub-models were obtained respectively by the above method,the mapping method to multi-constraint product function-structure model was given.Finally,a typical instance of configuration design of hydraulic machine was given to prove validity prospect of the above-mentioned method.

Abstract:In the research of commonalities and variations of domain modeling, feature modeling is proved to be an effective and widely used method. But how to visualize the feature models in user interfaces remains to be a problem. In studying the data processing domain, we design rendering rules to combine features to user visible engines in GUI XML and UML based Architecture Description Language (ADL). Furthermore, we visualize the process in our IDE tool based on Eclipse.

Abstract:In mechanical product design, rapid and effective simulation is invariably essential since the design flaws can be spotted by the simulation results in advance. However, currently, most designers always perform assembly process and kinematics simulation separately, which may lead to repetitive work and low design efficiency. To address the problem, this paper presents a novel method for product design which aims to integrate the assembly process and kinematics simulation seamlessly. To begin with, a semantic modeling method for part information is introduced, which is the premise and foundation to achieve the integration. Secondly, the assembly process simulation is carried out according to the defined steps derived from interactive semantic reasoning among parts. Moreover, the completed assembled model is utilized to generate kinematic pairs automatically, which can help avoid a lot of unnecessary preparations for kinematics simulation. Meanwhile, physics engine is adopted to provide a stable kinematics operation. Based on these, the assembly plan and motion characteristics of a new product can be analyzed effectively and quickly. Therefore, the designers can obtain the analytical results and attempt different design schemes readily. Finally, the effectiveness of the integrated simulation method is verified by a case study of excavator assembly process and kinematics simulation.

Abstract:In the course of collaborative design,the product model is required not only to be edited easily but available to maintain its semantic conformity.An identifier-based solid model combined with feature model is used to represent the product model fitting the collaborative design environment.The feature-based identifier of topological elements and its mechanism are presented to relate these identifiers to their features.In this product model,the semantic elements are independent relatively to topological elements but,at the same time,both are keeping in contact with each other by introducing the identifier mechanism,thus maintaining effectively the corresponding relation between the topological structures before and after modification and implementing the feature edit of product model with the conformity of model designs provided during collaborative design.

Abstract:The product model for conceptual design was built based on functionstructure relation. Firstly, the function model was established, in which the meta-function and input/output flow were modeled with the functional basis approach, and the dynamic behavior of input/output flow was described with the language of bond graph. Secondly, the structure model was established based on component-connector relation, in which physical hierarchy was described with undirected graph. Functional features were extracted subsequently, which consist of meta-function, flow object and relational constraints. The design concepts were generated by the decomposition of function and mapping between function and structure. Finally, a design case of transmission system was given to demonstrate the proposed model.

Abstract:A material feature-based heterogeneous solid model was developed to represent the heterogeneity of biomaterials.The material feature was defined as a specified material distribution in a certain sub-region within the solid as a high level abstraction of design intent.The material features were then represented by material composition functions.The definition,formation,and domain of the material composition functions were formally presented.A heterogeneous modeling system was implemented based on the open source graphics kernel VTK(Visualization ToolKit.With this feature-based modeling,the system can conveniently determine material distributions within solids by design rules and functional requirements.
