Abstract:More and more control elements are incorporated into a single system by the information technology such as internet of things.Consequently,the scale of a control system increases quickly,and the control specification becomes more and more complicated.Any logic mistake that violates a given control specification may lead to a serious industrial failure and even security issue.Besides,there is a"state space explosion"for discrete event systems.These make a challenge for designing and debugging programs running in programmable logic controllers(PLCs)or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).The supervisory control theory of discrete event systems is to implement a given complicated logic specification by formal methods. The specification such as interlock,sequence,mutual exclusion,and language is expressed by a Petri net or automata.It is in turn translated into codes that can be executed by a PLC or FPGA.This paper surveys these formal methods for synthesis of logical controller,which are to shorten the costed time for control programs,to ease the reuse of them,and to increase the safety and reliability of them.

The auctorial opinion of the challenge proposition is put forward which is fallen across from the three aspects: modeling, control, and optimization in the engineering application of the control theory. The modeling problem of industrial noise is presented. And the intelligent method is pointed out to deal with the antinomy of the performance and robustness of the control systems based on the problem in the industry control practice work. It brings forward that it recur to the expert system to adjust the feasibility area adaptive to solve large scale engineering problem.And it points out the good mutual enhancement process between the control theory and its application.

Abstract:The recent development of the variable structure control (VSC) is discussed in this paper. It can be summarized as follows: main theoretical problems of the variable structure control (VSC) are investigated deeply and comprehensively; some new synthesis methods of VSC are presented and are extended to many kinds of systems, thus the distance between theory and practice is shortens largely; variable structure control integrates with other control strategies (for example, classical control, adaptive control and fuzzy control, etc.). The key problems for the study of VSC are the robustness and the reduction of chattering. With the development of VSC theoretical research, many real application results are reported recently.

Abstract:This paper systematically introduces the origin, development, and the state-of-the-art of artificial intelligence, and from the viewpoint of control, elaborates the possible problems, challenges, and opportunities when applying artificial intelligence to control systems.We highlight the importance of intelligent algorithms and simulations in intelligent control, and emphasize that the core of intelligent control is the control algorithms constructed via artificial intelligence.We discuss the relations between artificial intelligence and the classic control theory.We further state that classic control and intelligent control do not conflict and thus should cooperate with each other.We should thoroughly investigate the merits, disadvantages, and feasible scenarios of classic control and intelligent control, to ensure that one can complement the other.Finally, we provide some suggestions on presenting novel intelligent control methods, establishing simulation platforms of intelligent control, and setting up multidisciplinary joint research centers.

Abstract:Optimal control of hybrid systems encounters the difficulty of computational complexity due to hybrid systems involving continuous variable and discrete variable.Hybrid model mixed with logics and rules is presented. Mixed integer nonlinear programming algorithm integrated constraint programming is applied to solve optimal control problems of hybrid model. The practical result shows that this method can build more precision model by utilizing mechanism model of industrial process and expert experience. And it also shows that the algorithm of mixed integer nonlinear programming integrated constraint programming can solve the optimal control problem of hybrid model rapidly. So this method can be used in real-time control of industrial process.

Kongzhi Lilun Yu Yinyong/Control Theory and Applications

Abstract:The existing control theory is divided into two parts in this paper, i.e. precise control theory and fuzzy control theory. After investigating the advantages and disadvantages of the precise control and fuzzy control respectively, the so-called fuzzy-precise combined control strategy is proposed from the view of practical application in the paper. This new strategy will bring maximum control benefits with minimum design efforts. As the application background, the fuzzy-precise combined control strategy has applied into four full scale paper machine control systems, and all of them got good control results.

Abstract:I present a novel design methodology for the synthesis of automatic controllers, together with a computational environment---the Control Engineer''s Workbench---integrating a suite of programs that automatically analyze and design controllers for high-perfor- \break \nobreak mance, global control of nonlinear systems. This work demonstrates that difficult control synthesis tasks can be automated, using programs that actively exploit and efficiently represent knowledge of nonlinear dynamics and phase space and effectively use the representation to guide and perform the control design. The Control Engineer''s Workbench combines powerful numerical and symbolic computations with artificial intelligence reasoning techniques. As a demonstration, the Workbench automatically designed a high-quality maglev controller that outperforms a previous linear design by a factor of 20.

Abstract:There is a strong trend in modern industrial systems to integrate computation, communication, and control theories into networked control systems (NCSs). This is anticipated to be the next wave in the information technology revolution. From a control perspective, the interdisciplinary relationship between computation, communication and control is illustrated through control loop timing analysis of NCSs. Critical issues in the emerging field of integrated computation, communication and control (ICCC) are discussed. Since it is difficult to analytically quantify the impacts of computation and communication constraints on the quality of control (QoC), a simulation-based approach is proposed. A numerical example of networked DC motor control is utilized in simulations, with different scheduling schemes and communication protocols employed. Results and analysis give valuable suggests for improving the control performance of NCSs which feature the integration of control with computation and communication.

Abstract:In thermal systems, many processes have the delayed, intensive inertial, serious nonlinear and unstable characteristics, which are very difficult or impossible to be well controlled with traditional control theories. A synthetical intelligent system is applied in the control process of thermal systems. The system integrating several management methods of intelligent information, such as artifical intelligence (AI), neural network (NN), fozzy logic (FL) and evolutional computation (EC) in order to synthetize their advantages and avoid the disadvantages, It is used to solve the problems which are mentioned above. To adapt the different constructions of thermal systems and complicated characters of the objects controlled, the paper takes the strategy of using modular analysis and programming method and integrating some intelligent and traditional control theories and methods. The structures of the typical synthetical intelligent control system are presented. An application example is provided in the end of the paper.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the artificial intelligence technology, significant breakthroughs in its theory and applications have been widely used in many fields. The related theories and technical achievements of artificial intelligence are likely to be integrated to the maximum extent in the field of control; that is, intelligent control will become the comprehensive embodiment of the artificial technology. This study starts with an overview of the development of the control science and technology, and concludes that intelligent control will become a starting point for the integration of artificial intelligence and industry. Then, the study discusses the development requirements of intelligent control, ways of control technology intellectualization, development stages of intelligent control, and characteristics of each stage. Finally, the key direction of promoting the development of the intelligent control technology is described.
Towards a Theoretical Foundation of PID Control for Uncertain Nonlinear Systems

Abstract:As is well-known, the classical PID control plays a dominating role in various control loops of industrial processes. However, a theory that can explain the rationale why the linear PID can successfully deal with the ubiquitous uncertain nonlinear dynamical systems and a method that can provide explicit design formulae for the PID parameters are still lacking. This paper is a continuation of the authors recent endeavor towards establishing a theoretical foundation of PID. We will investigate the rationale of PID control for a general class of high dimensional second order non-affine uncertain systems. We will show that a three dimensional parameter set can be constructed explicitly, such that whenever the PID parameters are chosen from this set, the closed-loop systems will be globally stable and the regulation error will converge to zero exponentially fast, under some suitable conditions on the system uncertainties. Moreover, we will show that the PD(PI) control can globally stabilize several special classes of high dimensional uncertain nonlinear systems. Furthermore, we will apply the Markus-Yamabe theorem in differential equations to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the choice of the PI parameters for a class of one dimensional non-affine uncertain systems. These theoretical results show explicitly that the controller parameters are not necessary to be of high gain, and that the ubiquitous PID control does indeed have strong robustness with respect to both the system structure uncertainties and the selection of the controller parameters.

Abstract:This paper investigates the settling time problem for dynamical systems, and some novel results are proposed. First, by reviewing classic achievements about the settling time problem of the control system, a new framework is designed. Then, based on the proposed framework, the classic fixed time control scheme is improved to predefined time control and exact time control results, respectively. Similarly, finite time control scheme is transformed into predefined time control and exact time control results. Furthermore, considering the bounded control results are vital in actual applications, the novel predefined time-bounded control and exact time-bounded control schemes are given. In the end, numerical simulations are conducted for robotic manipulators to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed control strategies.

Abstract:In recent years, formal methods have been extensively used in the design of autonomous systems. By employing mathematically rigorous techniques, formal methods can provide fully automated reasoning processes with provable safety guarantees for complex dynamic systems with intricate interactions between continuous dynamics and discrete logics. This paper provides a comprehensive review of formal controller synthesis techniques for safety-critical autonomous systems. Specifically, we categorize the formal control synthesis problem based on diverse system models, encompassing deterministic, non-deterministic, and stochastic, and various formal safety-critical specifications involving logic, real-time, and real-valued domains. The review covers fundamental formal control synthesis techniques, including abstraction-based approaches and abstraction-free methods. We explore the integration of data-driven synthesis approaches in formal control synthesis. Furthermore, we review formal techniques tailored for multi-agent systems (MAS), with a specific focus on various approaches to address the scalability challenges in large-scale systems. Finally, we discuss some recent trends and highlight research challenges in this area.
