Abstract:The synthesis, conductivity behavior and crystal structure of the ion radical salt [EDA][Ni(dmit) 2 ] 3 (EDA=2-diethylamino-1,3-dithiolanylium; dmit=1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) are described. The crystal possesses the triclinic system. The structure consists of thick layers of stacked Ni(dmit) 2 entities separated by EDA cations. Short S⋯S interstack distances are observed such that two-dimensional networks of closely spaced Ni(dmit) 2 are formed and reflected in low anisotropy in conductivities measured in the a b plane ( σ a : σ b : σ c =1:2:10 −4 ). The room-temperature four-probe conductivity measured along the longest axis ( b axis) is about 0.2 S cm −1 . Temperature dependence shows a thermally activated conductivity with activation energy of 0.11 eV.

Abstract:The crystal of [Ni(dien)_2]_2[Mn(NCS)_6]·H_2O was synthesized and the structure of its single crystal was determined by X ray diffraction. The crystal is monoclinic system, space group P21/c with a=16.544(3),b=15.137(2), c=17.334(3)?, β=99.90(1)°, V=4276.3(12)?3, Z=4, Dc=1.479g·cm-3, Mr=951.55, F(000)=1998, μ=1.489mm-1, R=0.0399, Rw=0.0958. IR was also determined.

Abstract:The reaction of metallocene cations [M'(C5H5)2]+ with (NBu4)n [M(dmit)2] (M = Ni, Pd; n = 1, 2) are reported. When M' = Fe, Ni; n = 1 conducting complexes Ni. (dmit)2 and Pd(dmit)2 were obtained, and when M' = Co; n = 1, 2 four no charge transfer salts [Co(C5H5)2]n[Ni(dmit)2] and [Co(C5H5)2]n[Pd(dmit)2] were obtained. The charge transfer states of these complexes were discussed based on ESCA, Raman spectra and cyclic voltammogram experiments. Ni (dmit)2 and Pd (dmit)2 exhibit a semiconductive conductivity temperature dependence, although their electric conductivity at room temperature are quite high. Tight binding band calculation gives the energy gap of Ni(dmit)2 0.112 eV which is in accord with the measured activation energy.

Abstract:The synthesis, structural characterization and electrical conductivity measurement of [MDA]2[Pd(dmit)2] (1 and [MDA] [Pd(dmit)2]2 (2) (MDA = 2-dimethylamino-1,3-dithiolanylium, dmit = 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) are reported. Complex 1 consists of two Pd(dmit)2 anions and four MDA cations in the unit cell and the anions are separated by cations in the crystal; the conductivity is about 10−7 S cm−1. The structure of complex 2 is made of stacked Pd(dmit)2 dimers. The modes of intra- and inter-dimer molecular overlapping are both of slide-away types. Pd atoms deviate from planes formed by four ligand S atoms 0.07 Å apart to approach each other. Room-temperature conductivity is 10–70 S cm−1. Temperature-dependent conductivity measurement of this compound indicated that it is a semiconductor with a low activation energy (0.043 eV).

Abstract:The complex HMEDA[Ni(dmit)2]2I (HMEDA=Hexamethylethylenediammonium) has been prepared. A single X-ray crystal structure analysis reveals that there are short S⋯S contacts between Ni(dmit)2 dimmers. The monoclinic system, space group p2/n, has cell dimensions: a=11.710(3) Å, b=22.559(5) Å, c=7.374(2) Å, β=93.000(3)0, V=1945.3(8) Å3, z=4. Full-matrix least-squares refinement, based on 2989 reflections converged at R=0.0686. The conductivity of this salt at room temperature is 0.1 S cm−1 and it shows semiconducting behavior from 20 to 300 K.

Abstract:A new electrical conductive crystal PyEt[Ni(dmit)2]2 (dmit = 4,5-dimercapto-1,3-dithiole-2-thione) has been synthesized and its X-ray structure has been determined to be in monoclinic system, C2/c space group. In PyEt[Ni(dmit)2]2 crystal, the conducting component [Ni(dmit)2]0.5- is face-to-face packed forming molecular column along the c-direction, and these molecular columns are then side-by-side extended along the a-direction forming a kind of two-dimensional conducting sheet on (010). The measured conductivity at room temperature along a certain direction on (010) plane is 10 S · cm-1. From 282 to 269 K, the crystal shows metallic behavior but changes to semiconductor below 269 K. Based on the measured crystal structure and calculated band structure, this conductor-semiconductor phase transformation can be primarily interpreted: The metallic conductivity is corresponding to the uniform molecular column and the atomic-lattice-chain structure of Ni chain, while the semi-conductive behavior to staggered molecular column and the atomic-zigzag-chain structure of Ni chain.

Abstract:A bis(dithiolene)nickel(II) complex, [Ni(L) 2 ] ( 1 ) [L = 1,2-di(4-methoxyphenyl)ethene-1,2-dithiolate], has been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, UV–vis-NIR, IR, NMR spectroscopies and high resolution mass spectrometry. The geometry of the molecule was optimized using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The calculated bond angles and distances are in agreement with the literature value. As for other dithiolenes, the present molecule absorbs extensively at 925 nm, in the near-infrared (NIR) region. A time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) predicts the absorption at 1002 nm. The other absorptions are in better parity with the experimental values. In solid-state, 1 conducts electricity. The electrical conductivity of 1 rises on increasing temperature. Upon incremental changes of temperature to 200 °C, the solid-state electrical conductivity of 1 reaches 1.91 × 10 −4 S/m. From electrical conductivity versus temperature plot, it is clearly found out that 1 behaves like a semiconductor. The band gap of the molecule was calculated using DFT. The calculated band gap for 1 is 0.0724922 eV which indicates that 1 deviates from metallic to semiconductor-like behavior. The thermal stability of the molecule reveals that the molecule is thermally stable to 200 °C. This is why the temperature variance of the molecular electrical conductivity was measured to this temperature.

Abstract:Hydrothermal synthesis between (NH 4)2S 2O 8 and MnSO 4 was carried out to investigate the structure, morphology, and electromagnetic properties of Ni-doped MnO 2 with different doping amounts. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and vector network analysis. The analysis results revealed that all the final products were α-MnO 2 and few amounts of γ-MnO 2, and the morphology changed obviously with the increase of the Ni doping amount. The doping of Ni had a certain effect on the electromagnetic properties, and some other properties derived from electromagnetic performances were also investigated, such as dielectric and magnetic loss tangent and microwave-absorbing properties. All the reflection loss (RL) peaks of the final products were moving toward lower frequency with increasing thickness, and with the thickness of 2 mm, the final products all had the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (RL < −10 dB), and the Ni-doped MnO 2 had better reflection loss performance than the undoped MnO 2 in the range of high frequency.

Abstract:The solvothermal synthesis and crystal structure of the one-dimensional coordination polymer Ni(DMBDIZ) (OOCMe) 2 (DMBDIZ = 2,6-dimethyl-benzo[1,2- d :4,5- d ′]diimidazole) are described. Each nickel ion is located in pseudo -octahedral geometry formed by four oxygen atoms from two bidentate acetate anions and two trans -related tertiary nitrogen donors from two different DMBDIZ ligands. The DMBDIZ entity acts as a trans exo -bidentate ligand and bridges the nickel ions to form a uniform linear chain with Ni···Ni separation = 8.703 Å. The hydrogen bonding between the acetate anions and the ligands contributes to the enhancement of the structural dimensionality. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements (2.0–300 K) reveal the presence of a very weak ferromagnetic interaction between the magnetic centers.

Abstract:Two mononuclear nickel(II) and manganese(II) complexes are synthesized and characterized. The DFT measurements predict their structural similarity. Moreover, the DFT study of electronic spectra shows similarity in the calculated and experimental absorption bands. The electrical studies show that the nickel(II) complex has a better electrical conductance in contrast to the manganese(II) complex. Two monomeric octahedral complexes {[Ni(N(CN)2)2(bpy)2]2·H2O (1) and [Mn(N(CN)2)2(bpy)2] (2) where bpy = 2,2′‐bipyridine} were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X‐ray diffraction, elemental analysis, UV–visible, and IR spectra. The geometry optimization through DFT measurements predicts that both the complexes have similar monomeric structures with hexa‐coordinated metal centers having a couple of bpy and mononegative dca anions and thus satisfying the octahedral geometry. Moreover, it is found that the HOMO–LUMO energy gaps are ΔE = 4.981 and 5.563 eV for complexes 1 and 2, respectively, which are responsible for the stabilization of the complex formation. The calculated absorption bands are located at 304 and 235 nm, which are in excellent agreement with the experimental result. Moreover, the DFT study of the electronic spectra of both complexes shows that the calculated absorption bands are in well agreement with the experimental results. In the electrical studies, direct current (dc) measurements on the copper/complex (1 or 2)/copper structure confirm a definite development in the device current with applied bias. Complex 1 has shown better electrical conductance compared to complex 2 based on the reduction of device resistance.

Abstract:The remarkable effect of divalent transition metal ions on the electrochemical performance of transition metal-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was systematically investigated via computational and experimental approaches. Ni3-xCoxAl-LDHs (x = 0, 1, 2, and 3) were synthesized on carbon paper by a unipolar pulse electrodeposition (UPED) method and used as electrodes in energy storage systems. The structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Their electrochemical performance was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The mechanism of different electrochemical performances with various divalent transition metal ions was investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) plus U method and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The computational and experimental data demonstrated that the electronic and ionic conductivity and deprotonation of NiAl-LDHs were improved by doping Co species, and the incorporation of Co and Ni cations enabled LDHs to exhibit a larger interlayer spacing which can facilitate the diffusion of OH- ions, indicating that NiCo2Al-LDHs had the highest specific capacitance.

Abstract:High-entropy solid-solution materials, especially layered ones incorporating five or more near-equimolar components into single-phase crystal structures, may spark functional synergism toward the electrochemistry area because of their unique antisite disordering structures and the synergistic effect of multiple active sites. Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of three isomorphous complexes [NiII(L)LnIII(DBM)₃] (Ln = Gd (1·2.5CH₃CN·0.5H₂O), Tb (2·2CH₃CN·0.5MeOH), and Dy (3·2CH₃CN·0.5MeOH·0.5H₂O)) are reported (H₂L = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-methylbenzyl)ethylenediamine, DBM⁻ = anion of 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione). The flexible ligand L²⁻ contains an N₂O₂-inner and an O₄-outer coordination site. There are diphenoxo bridges between NiII and LnIII ions in these complexes. The remaining coordination sites are occupied by DBM⁻ anions. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the presence of intramolecular ferromagnetic interactions in desolvated complexes 1-3. The magnetic coupling constant JNiGd in complex 1 is estimated to be 1.11 cm⁻¹ (H = -2JNiGdSNiSGd). Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies reveal that complexes 2 and 3 show frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals, which indicate that they exhibit SMM behavior. The energy barriers for complexes 2 and 3 under a 2 kOe applied direct current (dc) magnetic field are estimated from Arrhenius plots to be 14.4 and 11.3 K, respectively.

Abstract:The synthesis, structural characterization, and electrical conductivity studies of charge-transfer compound (bmim)[Pd(dmit)(2)](2) was described. This compound was obtained as small needles by electrocrystalization of (bmim)(2)[Pd(dmit)(2)]. Crystallographic parmeters for C20H18N2S20Pd2: monoclinic system; space group: C2/c ; a = 6.3718 (13), b = 14.543 (3), c = 36.339 (7) Angstrom; a = 90, beta = 92.04 (3), gamma = 90; Z = 4, R = 0.0785 (I>2 degrees a (I)). The room temperature conductivity of this salt is 1.2 S . cm(-1), and it shows metallic conducting state in the temperature range of 287-245 K.

Abstract:The syntheses and characterizations of the nickel(III) complexes, [Bu4N] [Ni(MEDT)2] (MEDT = 5-methyl-6-hydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate) and [Bu4N] [Ni(MEDT)2] (MEDT = 5-phenyl-6-hydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate) are reported. Both complexes show characteristic IR and UV-vis absorptions of transition metal dithiolate complexes. The cyclic voltammograms contain two waves, indicating a two-step electrochemical process [ML2]0 = [ML2]1− = [ML2]2−. The solid powder ESR spectra show three broad signals. The frozen glass ESR spectra yielded g value assignments of g1 = 2.102, g2 = 2.049 and g3 = 2.004 for [Ni(MEDT)2]− and g1 = 2.104, g2 = 2.048 and g3 = 2.004 for [Ni(PHDT)2]−. Both complexes are semiconductors with electrical conductivities of the order of 10−8 S cm−1. Single-crystal structure analysis revealed that the gross geometry of the [Ni(MEDT)2]− anion is planar with the exception of the external unit —CH2CH(Me)—. There are two different kinds of anions. The anions form stacks along the b- and c-axes. The nearest intermolecular SS distance is 5.104 Å.

Abstract:A series of CuCr1-xNixO2 (0 <= x <= 0.06) polycrystalline samples was prepared. The electrical conductivity was measured in the temperature range of 160-300 K. It was found that the electrical conductivity (or) increases rapidly with the doping of Ni2+ ions. At room temperature, the sigma is 0.047 S cm(-1) for the sample with x=0.06, which is two orders of magnitude larger than that of the CuCrO2 sample (9.49E-4 S cm(-1)). The Seebeck coefficients are positive for all samples, which indicate p-type conducting of the samples. The experimental results imply that it is possible to get higher electrical conductivity p-type transparent conducting oxides (TCO) from CuMO2 by doping with divalent ions. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Two coordination compounds have been synthesized following the Davidson method. The crystal structures of the two complexes of M(dnpi)(2) (M = Mn2+ and Ni2+; dnpi = 4,5-dipheny1-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1H-imidazole) were obtained. The grown crystals were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, UV-vis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and DTA/TGA. The equilibrium geometry and molecular orbitals (MO) of the complexes are calculated based on B3LYP using LANL2DZ basis sets. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were measured by the Z-scan technique with a pulse width of 4 ns at 532 nm and a 10 Hz repetition rate generated from a Q-switched frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser. The nonlinear absorption coefficient, beta, is 3.5 x 10(-12) m/W for Ni(dnpi)(2) and 2.3 x 10(-11) m/W for Mn(dnpi)(2), which has a nonlinear refractive index, gamma, of -1.2 x 10(-12) m(2)/W and elicits self-defocusing properties. Abstract:The complex 2-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)pyridylmethyl bis[6,7-dihydro-5H-1,4-dithiepin-2,3-dithiolato]nickelate(III) ([DASPM] [Ni(PDDT)(2)]) has been prepared and characterized by IR, UV-NIR and ESR. X-ray structure analysis reveals that the anions of the complex are packed in pairs and arranged as stacks along the alpha-axis. The shortest intermolecular S-S contact is 3.86 Angstrom, within a pair, and 4.00 Angstrom between the pairs. The electrical conductivity measured for a compacted pellet at room temperature is 1.3 x 10(-9) S cm(-1).
