Abstract:A bi-functional sugar-based surfactant ALA14 was designed as the ligand and micelle constructor and demonstrated to promote the copper-catalyzed C-X coupling reaction in water. The nature of this micelle, formed by sugar-based surfactants, was investigated with CMC, DLS, and TEM, via which encapsulating and aggregation of the substrates in micelle were verified. Additionally, it was addressed by 1H-NMR analysis that the enrichment position of the substrates is in the lipophilic alkyl chain. Finally, moderate to excellent yields of the aimed products were obtained in this work. This remarkably simple strategy expanded the scope of C-X coupling reaction in water; most notably, both water and ALA14 can be recycled and reused.

Abstract:This study describes the synthesis of a new class of surfactants that is based on the bioderived building blocks fructose, fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), and hydroxy propionitrile (cyanoethanol, 3-HP). The synthesis is scalable, is carried out at ambient conditions, and does not require chromatography. The produced surfactants have excellent surfactant properties with critical micelle concentrations and Krafft points comparable to current glucose-based surfactants.

Abstract:Purpose At present, the conventional method of preparing cationic fluorinated acrylic latex is to emulsify copolymerised monomers with cationic surfactants. However, there has been a wide concern about using Gemini surfactants to prepare cationic polymer latex to improve its properties. The purpose of this paper was to focus on the synthesis of novel self-crosslinked cationic fluorinated acrylic latex (SCFAL), during which the copolymerised monomers were initiated with a water soluble azo initiator and emulsified with mixed surfactants of Gemini emulsifier and alkyl polyglycoside (APG). Design/methodology/approach The novel SCFAL was prepared successfully by the semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerisation of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) and hydroxy propyl methacrylate (HPMA) in aqueous medium. Findings The conversion is the maximum and the coagulation percentage the minimum when the amounts of emulsifier and initiator are 8 and 0.6 per cent, respectively. The average particle size of the latex is significantly reduced with the increase of the amount of emulsifiers used. However, the average particle size of the latex is increased with the increase of the amount of HPMA. The particle size of the latex is of a unimodal distribution, which means that the particle size was reasonably uniform. Contact angle is increased with the increase of the amount of the HFMA. Practical implications The novel SCFAL can be widely used as significant components in the field of coatings, leather, textile, paper, adhesives and so on. Originality/value SCFAL, which was emulsified with novel mixed surfactants of Gemini surfactant and APG, has been prepared successfully. Influences of amount of initiator, emulsifier, HPMA and HFMA on emulsion polymerisation and/or properties of novel latex are investigated in detail.

Abstract:The novel cationic polyacrylate latex containing fluorine silicon was successfully prepared via soap-free emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyltriethoxysilane and hexafluorobutylmethacrylate in water phase, which were initiated with water soluble azo initiator and emulsified with the mixed surfactants polymerizable emulsifier and OP-10. The films of the resultant latex were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and contact angle (CA) determinator, respectively. In comparison with the conventional polyacrylate latex, the thermal stability and water resistance of novel latex film are improved. The conditions of preparing the novel cationic acrylate latexes were optimized. The optimum conditions of preparing the novel latex are as follows: the amount of emulsifiers and the initiator are 6.0% and0.3%, respectively; both the amount of VETS and amount of HFMA are 6.0%. In this case, the conversion is high and the polymerization stability is good.

Abstract:A facile polyol approach has been developed for large-scale synthesis of water-soluble Na2SiF6 nanotubes and nanospindles in a controlled manner with polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a surfactant. We found that the concentration of PAA plays a critical role in controlling the morphology of the Na2SiF6 nanostructures because this parameter determines the shape of PAA micelles formed in aqueous solution. As expected, the Na2SiF6 nanotubes and nanospindles exhibit wide applications as a template for synthesis of other nanostructures owing to their water-soluble properties.

Abstract:A new group of cleavable di-anionic surfactants aliphatic glycerol acetal di-sodium sulfosuccinates has been successfully synthesized starting from esterification reaction of aliphatic glycerol acetals with maleic anhydride, followed by sulfonation with sodium sulfite. Abstract:A new and more practical method for the preparation of solution‐stable perfluoroalkanesulfenic acids was successfully developed. Starting from perfluoroalkyl iodides, perfluoroalkyl sulfoxides were synthesized by their substitution reaction with alkyl mercaptans and the following oxidation of resulting perfluoroalkyl sulfides with m ‐CPBA. Subsequent β ‐H elimination of perfluoroalkyl sulfoxides under heating conditions gave the corresponding perfluoroalkanesulfenic acids in good yields.

Abstract:The novel cationic polymer latex was prepared by the semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and hexafluorobutylmethacrylate in water phase, which were initiated with water soluble azo initiator and emulsified with the mixed surfactants cationic emulsifier and nonionic emulsifier. The structure of the resultant latex is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum and differential scanning calorimetry. The conditions for preparing the novel latex were optimized. The optimum conditions for preparing the latex were as follows: the amount of emulsifier is 3%; the amount of initiator is 0.8%; the content of the fluorinated monomer is 4%. In this case, the conversion of mixed monomers is 99.06% and the coagulation percentage is 0.96%, the average particle size of latex is 7:26 nm. In addition, in comparison with the latex prepared without the fluorinated monomers, the hydrophobicity of the resultant latex film is improved clearly.

Abstract:Fluorocarbon surfactants are a key ingredient of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) extinguishing agent. As is well known, the most widely used fluorocarbon surfactants are perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) and theirs derivatives. However, PFOS has been restricted due to its drawbacks such as toxicity, bio-accumulation and resistance to biodegradation, etc. Fortunately, the toxicity and bio-accumulation can be neglected if the fluorocarbon chain contained in the surfactants is less than or equal to 4. Therefore, synthesis of novel short fluorocarbon chain (≤ C4) surfactants has become a very important way to solve this problem. A novel fluorocarbon surfactant based on perfluorobutyl had been synthesized and its chemical structure had been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and 19F NMR measurements in this work. Since the fluorocarbon surfactant mixed with appropriate hydrocarbon surfactant can reduce its dosage and cutting production costs, the surface tension and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the synthesized fluorocarbon surfactant and its equimolar mixtures with CH3(CH2)5NaO3S had been studied. The results show that CMC and the surface tension at CMC (γCMC) of the pure surfactant were 21.68 mmol/L and 17.08 mN/m, while the minimum surface tension and CMC could reach to 16.58 mN/m and 7.72 mmol/L for the mixed system, respectively. In addition, the foamability, spreadability and extinguishing performance of the equimolar mixed system has also been investigated. The foam expansion and the 25% drainage time are 9.8 and 313 s, respectively, and the extinguishing times are less than 65 s while the burnback times are more than 14.50 min for all the hydrocarbon oils studied in this work, indicating a great application prospect in AFFF.

Abstract:The fluorinated polyacrylate latex were successfully prepared with semi- continuous seeded emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate (BA), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFMA) which was initiated with potassium persulfate (KPS) initiator and emulsified with the novel mixed surfactants of sodium lauryl glutamate (SLG) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (OP-10). The structure of the resultant latex was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The particle size of the latex was measured by Zetatrac dynamic light scattering detector. The film of latex was tested by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle (CA). The optimum conditions of preparing the novel fluorinated polyacrylate latex are optimized and the results are as follows: the amount of emulsifiers is 4.0%; mass ratio of SLG to OP-10 is 1:1, the amount of the initiator is 0.6%. The mass ratio of MMA to BA is 1:1 and the amount of HFMA is 7.0%. In this case, the conversion is high and the polymerization stability is good. In addition, the water resistance and thermal properties of the latex films were improved significantly in comparison with the film of the latex prepared without the fluorinated monomer.

Various 4-sulfoalkanoic acids with straight C8, C10, C12, C14, C16, and C18 chains were synthesized expeditiously through the radical addition of methyl 2-((ethoxycarbonothioyl) thio) acetate to linear terminal olefins and subsequent oxidation with peroxyformic acid. This is a useful and convenient strategy for the synthesis of dianionic-headed surfactants with a carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid functionalities in the head group region.

Abstract:In this study, a series of new betaine fluorocarbon surfactants (abbreviated as FSC-m) were synthesized with N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propane diamine, perfluoroalkyl sulfonyl fluoride, and sodium chloroacetate. The novel surfactants were characterized by FI-IR, 1H-NMR and 19F-NMR. The surface activity of these surfactants at the air-water interface was investigated. The oil-water interfacial tension, adsorption, and wettability were studied on the oily drilling cuttings. The results showed that the novel surfactants have excellent surface and interfacial activities and low CMC. The novel surfactants can rapidly absorb at oily drilling cuttings, and their isotherm adsorption curve is L-shaped, with single-molecule Langmuir adsorption characteristics. FSC-m dramatically affected the wettability of oily drilling cuttings, such that the oil drop contact angle increased to 75.5° and the water drop contact angle increased to 117.2°, thus reducing the adhesion of the oil phase to the drilling cuttings. These surfactants can be applied to the oil removal technology of oily drilling cutting and they have a broad application prospect.

C18‐DABCO‐AA: A Novel Brønsted Acidic Gemini Surfactant for the Environmental Benign Synthesis of 2,3‐Dihydroquinazolin‐4(1H)‐ones in Water at Ambient Temperature

Abstract:We synthesized an acidic surfactant called C18‐DABCO‐AA, which demonstrated excellent surfactant properties, with a CMC of 0.80 mM and a pKa of 3.3. This surfactant effectively facilitates the synthesis of 2,3‐dihydroquinazolin‐4(1H)‐ones in water at 40 °C via the reaction of aromatic aldehydes or ketones with anthranilamide at its CMC. Additionally, the surfactant solution can be reused up to five times. We have successfully synthesized a new acidic surfactant named C18‐DABCO‐AA, which contains octadecyl and acetic acid substituent on DABCO (1,4‐diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane) unit, with an excellent yield. The synthesized surfactant was analyzed using FT‐IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopic techniques. Its thermal behavior was analyzed by using the TGA–DTA technique. Our analysis indicates that the synthesized surfactant has excellent surfactant properties. Its critical micelle concentration (CMC) is 0.80 mM as determined by the conductivity method and UV–vis absorption measurement at 298.15 K. Surfactant also showed strong acidic properties with a pKa of 3.3. It is the best catalyst for the synthesis of 2,3‐dihydroquinazolin‐4(1H)‐ones (DHQs) in water at 40 °C. The synthesis is achieved via two‐component reactions of various aromatic aldehydes and anthranilamide in water at a CMC concentration of C18‐DABCO‐AA. The method was also extended for synthesizing DHQs via two‐component reactions of different ketones and anthranilamide under similar reaction conditions. The products were achieved in with yields ranging from good to excellent within 60–90 min. Additionally, the aqueous solution with C18‐DABCO‐AA was reused up to five times with a minor decrease in product yield. The present protocol is fast, energy‐efficient, and can be used on a large scale for synthetic purposes. Additionally, it boasts impressive environmentally friendly credentials.

Abstract:A salt-type fatty alcohol ether carboxylic ester (AECE-Na) surfactant with both anionic and non-ionic characteristics was synthesised using a fatty alcohol ether (AEO) and succinic anhydride. Compared with traditional synthetic methods, neither irritating substances (chloroacetic acid and chloroacetate) nor precious metals (Pt and Pd) were used in the synthesis, which is a simple, economic, and green method. FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopies and MALDI TOF mass spectrometry were used to prove the molecular structure of the target product AECE-Na. In addition, the surface activities, intermolecular interactions, application properties, and aggregation behaviours of the individual systems (AEO and AECE-Na) and the anionic/non-ionic mixed system (AECE-Na/AEO) were investigated. The results showed that AECE-Na/AEO exhibits synergistic effects in terms of surface tension reduction efficiency, wetting, emulsification, foaming, and detergency compared with the individual systems.
Comparative analysis of bio-based amino acid surfactants obtained via Diels–Alder reaction of cyclic anhydrides

Abstract:Abstract Current changes in environmental legislation and customer demands set an urge for the development of more sustainable surfactants. Thus, the objective of this work was the development of novel environmentally friendly amino acid surfactants. Combining Diels–Alder cyclization of myrcene with maleic or citraconic anhydride followed by ring opening with amino acids enabled a synthesis route with a principal 100% atom economy. Variation of amino acids resulted in a large structural variety of anionic and amphoteric surfactants. Lysine gave access to either a mono-acylated product bearing a cationic side chain or a bi-acylated gemini surfactant. First, anhydride precursors were synthesized in yields of >90% in a Diels–Alder reaction under microwave radiation and subsequent amino acid coupling in aqueous environment gave fully bio-based surfactants in good yields and purity. Physicochemical characterization showed an enhanced decrease in surface tension upon addition of amino acids to the myrcene–anhydride backbone, resulting in a minimal value of 31 mN·m −1 for gemini–lysine. Foamabilitiy and foam stability were significantly increased at skin-friendly pH 5.5 by incorporation of amino acids. The carboxylic groups of surfactants with arginine were esterified with ethanol to access cationic compounds. Comparative analysis revealed moderate antimicrobial effects against yeast, Gram-positive bacteria, and Gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract:Amino acid surfactants (AASs) based on environmentally friendly biomasses have the characteristics of renewable, easy biodegradation, antibacterial and low toxicity, and have been widely used in daily chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other fields. This study concerned the use of octanal and amino acids as raw materials. In addition, seven types of amino acid‐based surfactants, through Collins reagents, Wittig‐Hornor reaction, and aza‐Micheal addition reaction, and amino acid head groups were connected with the alkyl chain by the CN bond. The structures were confirmed by infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1HNMR). Its surface activity and adsorption properties are evaluated. The physical properties of amino acid‐based surfactants were tested by surface tension and dynamic contact angle. The results demonstrated that histidine‐based amino acid surfactant (C8His) has the lowest critical micelle concentration (CMC) and surface tension at CMC (γCMC), 0.39 mmol L−1 and 28.79 mN L−1, respectively. Amino acid residues contribute to reducing the critical micelle concentration of surfactant. The interfacial adsorption of glycine‐based amino acid surfactant (C8Gly) significantly improved with the increase in temperature, so the surface tension decreased significantly. In addition, sodium chloride could effectively enhance the interfacial adsorption, and the gas–liquid interfacial tension and contact angle of AASs decrease.

Abstract:A novel polymerizable fluorocarbon surfactant, perfluoro (4⁻methyl⁻3, 6⁻dioxaoct⁻7⁻ene) sodium sulfonate (PSVNa), was synthesized and characterized. The fluorocarbon surfactant PSVNa and its mixture PSVNa/SDS were used as emulsifiers during the emulsion polymerization of DFHMA/MMA. The investigation of polymerization kinetics, particle size, and stability of the emulsions revealed that PSVNa has excellent emulsifying properties. The NMR spectrum of the copolymer and the detection of residual PSVNa show that more than 95% of the fluorocarbon surfactants have been linked to the polymer chains by radical polymerization, which will greatly reduce the environmental pollution caused by fluorinated surfactants.

Abstract:N -Substituted 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furfuryl amines have been obtained through the reductive amination of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with a variety of primary amines using a non-noble metal catalyst based on monodisperse Co nanoparticles covered by a thin carbon layer. The Co@C catalyst was highly active, selective and stable, allowing us to perform the reductive amination of HMF under very mild reaction conditions (60 °C and 4 bar H 2 ) using ethanol as a green solvent and achieve the corresponding amino-alcohol in yields ranging from 80 to 99%. Moreover, the reaction was extended to other furanic aldehydes with excellent success. Furthermore, in order to synthesize amino-ester derivatives, precursors of ammonium salt-based surfactants, the reductive amination of HMF with methylamine was coupled with the selective esterification of the hydroxymethyl group of the furan ring with fatty acids using lipase CALB (Novozym 435) as a biocatalyst in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran as a green and enzyme compatible solvent, achieving practically total conversion to the corresponding amino-esters. The process was implemented in flow reactors by combining two consecutive fixed bed reactors, achieving a global yield of the amino-ester derivative of 85%, which was maintained over 86 h of operation.

Abstract:Sophorolipids (SLs) show great potential application in many fields as an alternative to chemically synthesized surfactants. However, their poor water solubility limits industrial applications in many fields. In this study, a new environmentally friendly strategy based on acid-induced chemical modifications has been developed to prepare and isolate water-soluble SLs from natural SLs that not dissolve or precipitate in fermentation broth. Over 70 % of SLs were obtained as sediments from fermentation broth after chemical modification at a pH of 1 at 120 °C for 5 min. The obtained SLs demonstrated excellent pH-regulated water solubility, superior foaming ability, and comparable surface activities with natural SLs. The involved mechanism of the present process was attributed to the generation of glucolipids with excellent water solubility. The present findings are conducive to preparing water-soluble SLs, addressing the problem that SLs cannot be recovered from fermentation broths via acid-induced precipitation in certain case.
