Abstract:The CO2 adsorbents with CaO contents of 6% to 100% were prepared by mixing the nano CaCO3 power with the alumina gel,and the effects of nano CaO content on the adsorption and microstructure properties of the CO2 adsorbent were studied.The results of microstructure property examinations show that,when the nano CaO content of CO2 adsorbent increases from 6% to 46%,the specific area decreases from 151.3 m2?g?1 to 8.1 m2?g?1,and the pore volume decreases from 0.41 cm3?g?1 to 0.07 cm3?g?1.However,when nano CaO content of CO2 adsorbent increases 27% to 46%,the pore size increases from 6.05 nm to 12.39 nm,and when CaO content is over 46%,the specific area and pore structure of the CaO adsorbents are similar to those of the pure CaO.The alumina in the adsorbent is amorphous when the CaO content is more than 27%,and the results of adsorption property experiments show that the adsorption capacity of nano CaO adsorbent increases from 1.02 mol CO2?g?1 to 7.05 mol CO2?g?1 when the CaO content increases from 12% to 83%.The adsorption rate becomes faster when CaO content of the CO2 adsorbent increases,and the results show that the relationship of CaO content to microstructure and adsorption properties of the nano CaO based adsorbents isn't linear.It was found that the stability of adsorption capacity and the adsorption rate of the CO2 adsorbent can be improved by adding a small amount of alumina.

Abstract:Corresponding to an experimental study with high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy [D. Pacile , Chem. Phys. Lett. 413, 420 (2005)], three possible coadsorption structures of 1/8 ML potassium with p(2x4) periodicity and 1/2 ML carbon monoxide with c(2x4) periodicity on Ni(111) are calculated using density functional theory. The analysis of bond lengths and electronic structures of CO molecules with different distances to K shows that the K-induced effect is short ranged. The coadsorption structure formed by exposing CO after K is suggested to be the p(2x4)-K/4CO structure with K occupying the hollow site of the c(2x4) CO pattern. In addition, the possible reason for the observed difference in efficiencies of CO2 formation with respect to different exposing orders of adsorbates is discussed.

Abstract:In this work, the adsorption of CO onto the surface of the transition metal Ni at different coverage levels was explored based on the density functional theory (DFT). The corresponding periodic slab plate models were established, and the adsorption parameters and CO electronic states on different nickel surfaces under different coverage (0.11 mL, 0.25 mL and 0.5 mL) were calculated. The results showed that the most stable adsorption sites on Ni (111) and Ni (100) crystal surfaces were valley sites, while the most stable adsorption sites on a Ni (110) surface was a short bridge site. By comparing the energy of the same adsorption sites, it was found that the adsorption of CO on a Ni (100) crystal surface was superior to the other two surfaces. Furtherly, from the perspective of the electronic structure, the density of states (DOSs) of Ni atoms and CO molecules were calculated before and after adsorption. The density of states showed that the main factor of surface adsorption generation originates from hybridization among the orbitals. This article provides insight into the mechanisms of the nickel adsorption of CO.

Abstract:Co-adsorption of CO and potassium on Fe(110) is investigated by HREELS. We find three CO adsorption states, with different C-O stretching frequencies. When θk=0.03, the three loss peaks are ascribed to three kinds of interactions i.e., short-range, medium-range and long-range interaction. When θk = 0.06, the long-range interaction adsorption state disappears, but the short-range state dominats. All C-O stretching frequencies shift to higher wavenum-ber with the increasing of CO exposure. CO-Fe loss peak disappears with the increasing of potassium atoms on the surface.
Synergetic Effect Dependence on Activated Oxygen in the Interface of NiOx-modified Pt Nanoparticles for the CO Oxidation from First-Principles

Abstract:CO oxidation on NiOx-modified Pt nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated by first-principles calculations and microkinetic methods. The binding energies of O2 and CO on NiOx/Pt suggest that CO adsorption is dominant and the CO oxidation mainly follows the Mars-van Krevelen (M-vK) mechanism. It was found that the interfacial O of NiOx/Pt played a key role in the combination of adsorbed CO to O, as well as the O2 dissociation. With a lower O vacancy formation energy, NiOx/Ptedge shows about four orders higher reaction rates than NiOx/Pt(100). Microkinetic analysis suggests that the rate-determining step also depends on the active O at the interface. The calculations highlight the synergetic effect difference of NiOx selectively deposited on the different sites of Pt NPs on the CO oxidation from the atomic reaction mechanism, and throws light on the high activity of CO oxidation on partially covered NiOx/Ptedge nanoparticles.

Abstract:The adsorption of CO on Pt group metals, as a most fundamental elementary reaction step, has been widely studied in catalysis and electrocatalysis. Particularly, the structures of CO on Pt(111) have been extensively investigated, owing to its importance to both fundamental and applied catalysis. Yet, much less is known regarding CO adsorption on a Pt(111) surface modulated by supported oxide nanostructures, which is of more relevance to technical catalysis. We thus investigated the coverage-dependent adsorption of CO on a Pt(111) surface partially covered by FeO nanostructures, which has been demonstrated as a remarkable catalyst for low-temperature CO oxidation. We found that, due to its strong chemisorption, the coverage-dependent structure of CO on bare Pt is not influenced by the presence of FeO. But, oxygen-terminated FeO nanostructures could modulate the diffusivity of CO at their vicinity, and thus affect the formation of ordered CO superstructures at low temperatures. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we inspected the diffusivity of CO, followed the phase transitions of CO domains, and resolved the molecular details of the coverage-dependent CO structures. Our results provide a full picture for CO adsorption on a Pt(111) surface modulated by oxide nanostructures and shed lights on the inter-adsorbate interaction on metal surfaces.CO adsorption on a Pt(111) surface partially covered by FeO nanostructures displayed coverage-dependent structures on the bare Pt surface. Oxygen-terminated FeO nanostructures could affect the formation of ordered CO superstructures at low temperatures.

Abstract:The peculiar structure of montmorillonite K-10 makes it has cation exchange capability,and it is the base that montmorillonite K-10 can be used to adsorb heavy mental ions.The adsorption properties of montmorillonite K-10 to nickel ion from aqueous solution were studied by liquid scintillation counting.The effects of such reaction conditions as temperature,pH va1ue,amount of montmorillonite and initial nickel concentration on the nickel ion adsorption content of montmorillonite K-10 were researched.The results indicated that higher pH va1ue,more montmorillonite K-10 and higher temperature are favourable for enrichment of nickel ion on the sorbent.Thermodynamic adsorption isotherm model for nickel ion is described by Freundlich equation.
Adsorption and Oxidation of CO on Co3O4/Ir(100) Thin Films

Abstract:The combination of noble metals and reducible metal oxides often displays superior catalytic properties in low-temperature CO oxidation reactions. In the present study, we investigated the adsorption and activation of CO on submonolayer and monolayer CoQ(x) films deposited on Ir(100) at low temperature under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED), we found that the CoOx films have a (3 x 1) structure and consist of a Co-O bilayer and an O-Co-O trilayer associated with Co2+ and Co3+ states, respectively. A combination of XPS, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and infrared reflection absorption spectrum (IRAS) reveals that the presence of the interface of the submonolayer CoOx film and Ir significantly enhances the catalytic activity of cobalt oxide for CO oxidation. In contrast, a monolayer film of CoOx without exposing CoOx-Ir interface sites is hardly active for CO oxidation. CO adsorbs on the bridge sites of Ir atoms on the submonolayer CoOx/Ir(100) surface at 100 K. Upon heating, CO partially reacts with oxygen on the surface to produce CO2, which desorbs at 215 K, while unreacted CO molecules adsorbed on Ir bridge sites migrate to top sites. Increasing the temperature leads to CO2 desorption at 295 and 325 K, arising from the reaction of CO with chemisorbed oxygen on the Ir surface and oxygen of cobalt oxide, respectively. These results reveal the importance of the interface between Ir and cobalt oxide in the oxidation of CO.

Abstract:The adsorption and oxidation behaviour of CO on different structural TiO2 has been analysed based on the density function theory first principle calculation. For zero-dimensional structure of nanoparticles, a high-specific surface area and onefold oxygen atoms on the surface result in a high rate of adsorption and oxidation for gas molecules. However, for one-dimensional nanotubes, CO molecules are physisorbed because of the absence of coordinatively unsaturated Ti4+ or basic O2− sites on it. But with advantages of lower levels of recombination of charge carriers, chemical adsorption may happen after illumination by the presence of adsorbate states in the band gap of the TiO2 nanotube upon light adsorption. Two-dimensional surfaces with onefold oxygen atoms or hole-assisted surface planes have stronger adsorption and oxidation ability.

Abstract:Enhancement in oxidation performance of Co3O4-based catalysts can be achieved by regulating K, and the promotion effects were strongly depended on the amount and existing state of K. Only the surface Co substituted by optimum amount of K (CoK2 with K/Co mole ratio of 1.56 × 10-2), unexpectedly high activities could be achieved. The specific activity of CoK2 were 20 and 2.7 times higher than that of Co3O4 for CO oxidation and CH4 combustion. However, the excess K in the form of carbonate or nitrate deactivated the active sites, so the performance against K amount behaved as a volcano curve. Based upon the electronic and structural modification of K, the electron density of Co and O simultaneously decreased which weakened CO adsorption strength and improved the CH bond activation. Since efficiency in various pollutants removal, CoK2 could be considered as a promising candidate for noble metal catalysts.

Abstract:The surface composition and structure of clean and partially oxidized Ni3Ti(0001) were examined by ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The interaction between nickel and titanium atoms on the above two surfaces and the effect of which on CO adsorption state were studied by high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). The results showed; (1) no dissociation of CO on the ordered Ni3Ti(0001) surface which is quasi-pure nickel, (2) about 60 cm-1 shift of C-O stretching vibration of initially adsorbed CO to lower frequency due to a small electronic interaction of adjacent Ti atoms on Ni, (3) a new Nix-C-O-Tiy species resulting from the bonding interaction of the oxygen end of CO with adjacent Ti atoms. After partial oxidation, the interaction described in (2) and (3) disappeared.

Abstract:Interaction of carbon monoxide (CO) with transition metal surfaces is an essential part of CO oxidation catalysis. In this report, we investigate and compare CO adsorption behavior on Pt (111) and Pd (111) surfaces combining first-principles (FP) calculations and lattice gas Monte-Carlo (LG-MC) simulations. Our results indicate that despite stronger CO binding on Pd (111) at low coverage, more repulsive lateral interactions on Pd surface lead to a more rapid adsorption energy decrease with respect to coverage. This results in lower saturation coverage and weaker CO desorption energies on Pd (111), which could contribute to its excellent reactivity observed under high pressure reaction conditions.
CO adsorption and oxidation on N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles

Abstract:In order to oxidize CO to CO2 during the process of steam pyrolysis nuclear graphite waste, the adsorption and oxidation of a CO molecule on undoped and N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles has been studied by first-principles calculations, including the adsorption energies, bond lengths, local density of states (LDOSs), and the charge density difference (CDD). In the adsorption process, two electrons transfer from CO to the particle resulting in the reduction of the Ti sites. CO2 and carbonate form during the adsorption process on the dangling oxygen atom. The CO over the undoped and N-doped nanoparticles forms CO2 by detaching the dangling oxygen atom. Less than 0.22 eV energy gained can drive the CO2 away to a distance greater than 3.01 angstrom. Therefore, the CO molecule can be oxidized to CO2 by TiO2 nanoparticle, and the physically adsorbed CO2 molecule can spontaneously dissociate at room temperature, apart from the energies released in the adsorption process. The adsorption energy for an undoped particle is -093 eV, while that for an N-doped particle is -2.47 eV or -2.52 eV. N-doped nanoparticles have stronger oxidation ability. The doped nitrogen site (N site) in N-doped nanoparticles is also a chemical adsorption site. N-doped anatase (101) surfaces have stronger adsorption ability than the undoped surface, but weaker than the N-doped anatase nanoparticles adsorption. The results show that the N-doped anatase particles can react with CO molecule more efficiently.

Abstract:Understanding and modulating the dynamic structural evolution is of great significance in developing high-performance heterogeneous catalysts. This work investigates the effect of potassium (K) promoter on the carburization and oxidation of Fe phases during CO 2 hydrogenation over an iron-based catalyst using in-situ X-ray diffraction, in-situ infrared spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed techniques. The addition of K enhances CO 2 adsorption of the catalyst, promotes the reaction of CO 2 with the dissociated hydrogen, and accelerates the carburization of Fe(0) to Fe 3 C and then to Fe 5 C 2 . In addition to impacting the reactive microenvironment of the catalyst surface on the competitive adsorption and reactions, the addition of K also prevents the active Fe 5 C 2 phase from oxidation during CO 2 hydrogenation. With an optimized content of K and CO pretreatment, the iron-based catalysts were endowed with high catalytic activity for CO 2 conversion to C 2 -C 4 olefins and C 5+ long-chain hydrocarbons. This work provides insight into the correlation between the reactive microenvironment and the structural evolution of Fe catalysts doped with K promoter and shall be beneficial for future development of new catalytic materials for CO 2 hydrogenation, and possibly other reactions.

Carbon monoxide adsorption on cobalt overlayers on a Si(1 1 1) surface studied by STM and XPS

Abstract:We report on the structure and reactivity of the Co-Si polycrystalline surfaces that form at room temperature (RT). Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used to examine the surface morphology while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to detect the chemical states of cobalt and silicon as a function of cobalt coverage. Moreover, XPS measurements after exposing the Co-Si(111) samples to CO gas provide information about CO adsorption and dissociation. When < 5 ML Co is deposited on Si(111) at RT, most Co atoms diffuse into Si lattice and no CO adsorption is found at RT. This shows that coordination of Co to Si suppresses CO adsorption. Neither Co-induced Si(111)-ring cluster nor CoSi2 crystalline film adsorb CO at RT. In contrast, CO adsorption was found at RT for cobalt doses > 5 ML, an indication that Co-rich silicides and metallic Co present. The CO adsorption capacity increases with cobalt dose up to 30 ML after which it levels off, an indication that metallic cobalt sites are dominantly exposed on the surface. Furthermore, a closed metal film is formed for 200 ML dose. Some dissociation of CO was observed during heating of the CO-covered samples for Co doses ≥ 30 ML.

Abstract:BackgroundMetal-oxide interface plays critical roles in promoting the catalytic activities of metal catalysts in a vast diversity of reactions. Maximizing this interfacial interaction so as to optimize the catalytic performance is an active subject of research that is worthy of intensive exploration.PurposeThis study aims to develop new Pt-group catalysts that are highly active towards cryogenic CO catalytic oxidation, and explore effective strategies to engineer metal-oxide (hydroxide) interfaces to weaken the adsorption of CO and to enhance the adsorption/activation of O2.MethodsSupported ultrasmall Pt nanoclusters (Ptnc-FeOx/SiO2) of (1.4±0.2) nm were synthesized using deposition-precipitation with urea (DPU). The catalytic performance towards CO oxidation was examined by using a fixed-bed U-shape flow quartz reactor. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques were combined to study the Ptnc-FeOx interfacial interaction.ResultsThe Ptnc-FeOx/SiO2 catalyst shows superior catalytic performance than Pt/SiO2 towards the CO oxidation reaction. Kinetics tests show that both the apparent activation energy and turnover frequency of Ptnc-FeOx/SiO2 are greatly enhanced as compared with Pt/SiO2 (19 kJ·mol-1 vs. 64 kJ·mol-1; 0.044 s-1 vs. 0.002 s-1 at 37 °C).ConclusionThe charge transfer from Fe to Pt results in the downshifted d-band center of Pt and reduces the CO adsorption strength, and hence, playing important roles in promoting the catalytic activity of Pt catalysts.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used to examine the surface morphology while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to detect the chemical states of cobalt and silicon as a function of cobalt coverage. Moreover, XPS measurements after exposing the Co-Si(111) samples to CO gas provide information about CO adsorption and dissociation. When <5 ML Co is deposited on Si(111) at RT, most Co atoms diffuse into Si lattice and no CO adsorption is found at RT. This shows that coordination of Co to Si suppresses CO adsorption. Neither Co-induced Si(111)-ring cluster nor CoSi2 crystalline film adsorb CO at RT. In contrast, CO adsorption was found at RT for cobalt doses >5 ML, an indication that Co-rich silicides and metallic Co present. The CO adsorption capacity increases with cobalt dose up to 30 ML after which it levels off, an indication that metallic cobalt sites are dominantly exposed on the surface. Furthermore, a closed metal film is formed for 200 ML dose. Some dissociation of CO was observed during heating of the CO-covered samples for Co doses >= 30 ML.
