Abstract:A magneto-optical trap (MOT) for cesium atoms that operates without a separate repumping laser is reported. The differences between a normal MOT and this kind of MOT have been experimentally studied. The influences of a repumping laser on cooling and trapping cesium atoms in the MOT have been carefully investigated. The results reveal that it is the critical injection-locked state of the diode laser that makes magneto-optical trapping of cesium atoms possible without a separate repumping laser.
Continuously Transferring Cold Atoms in Caesium Double Magneto-Optical Trap

Abstract:We have established a caesium double magneto-optical trap ( MOT) system for cavity-QED experiment, and demonstrated the continuous transfer of cold caesium atoms from the vapour-cell MOT with a pressure of similar to 1 x 10(-6) Pa to the ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) MOT with a pressure of similar to 8 x 10(-8) Pa via a focused continuous-wave transfer laser beam. The effect of frequency detuning as well as the intensity of the transfer beam is systematically investigated, which makes the transverse cooling adequate before the atoms leak out of the vapour-cell MOT to reduce divergence of the cold atomic beam. The typical cold atomic flux got from vapour-cell MOT is similar to 2 x 10(7) atoms/s. About 5 x 106 caesium atoms are recaptured in the UHV MOT.

Abstract:A novel cesium (Cs) two-color magneto-optical trap (TC-MOT), which partially employs the optical radiation forces due to photon scattering of the 6P3/2 (F'=5) - 7S1/2 (F"=4) excited-state transition in the Cs 6S1/2 - 6P3/2 - 7S1/2 (852 + 1470 nm) ladder-type system, has been proposed and experimentally investigated. One of the three pairs of 852 nm cooling/trapping beams (CTBs) in a conventional Cs MOT is replaced with a pair of the 1470 nm CTBs (type-I) or with one 852 nm CTB plus another counter-propagating 1470 nm CTB (type-II). Both the type-I and type-II Cs TC-MOTs can cool and trap atoms on both the red- and blue-detuning sides of the two-photon resonance. The Cs TC-MOT demonstrated in this work may have applications in the background-free detection of cooled and trapped atoms, and the photon-pair sources compatible with the ensemble-based quantum memory and the long-distance quantum communication via optical fiber.

Abstract:We have trapped a cold sample of cesium atoms in a magneto-optical trap. The damped harmonic force of magneto-optical trap was used to capture and trap the cesium atoms directly from a room temperature vapor. About 1.5 x 10(7) cesium atoms with a density of 3 x 10(9) atoms/cm(3) formed a 4 mm(3) cesium atomic cloud with temperature below 500 mu K.

Abstract:A 1470 nm+852 nm two-color (TC) cesium (Cs) magneto-optical trap (MOT) with a 6S1/2-6P3/2-7S1/2 ladder-type system is proposed and experimentally investigated. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report about the 1470 nm+852 nm Cs TC-MOT. One of the three pairs of the 852 nm cooling and trapping beams (CTBs) in a conventional Cs MOT is replaced with a pair of the 1470 nm CTBs. Thus, the TC-MOT partially employs the optical radiation forces from photon scattering of the 6P3/2 (F′=5) −7S1/2 (F′′=4) excited-state transition (1470 nm). This TC-MOT can cool and trap Cs atoms on both the red- and blue-detuning sides of the two-photon resonance. This work may have applications in cooling and trapping of atoms using inconvenient wavelengths and background-free detection of cold and trapped Cs atoms.

Abstract:A cesium double magneto-optical trap (MOT) system is established to prepare the cold atoms in the ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) chamber for cavity quantum electrodynamics (Cavity-QED) experiment. Utilizing a focused weak continuous-wave laser beam, the cold cesium atoms, which are cooled and trapped from the slow tail of cesium vapor at room temperature, are continuously transferred from vapor-cell MOT to UHV MOT. The effect of the transfer laser detuning upon the steady-state atoms number in UHV MOT, and loading process of double MOT are experimentally investigated. Typical pressures of the vapor-cell MOT and UHV MOT are -1 × 10-6 Pa and -8 × 10-8 Pa, respectively. Normally -5 × 107 and -5 × 106 cold cesium atoms with effective temperature of 72 ± 4 μK are loaded into the vapor-cell MOT and UHV MOT.

Abstract:The number of cold atoms trapped in magneto-optical trap(MOT) can be derived from probe absorption signal. After the MOT is switched off, the cold cloud freely expands in gravitational field with an initial velocity distribution. So the measurement process can be described with the interaction model between the individual stationary two-level atom and single mode resonate laser. Absorption method can largely improved the measurement precision. In this paper we introduce the physical principle of measurement and demonstrate the whole experimental procedure in detail. The number of atoms trapped in our MOT, (8±0.3)×106 is measured in experiment. And the number of steady-state atoms and the lifetime of atom trapped in MOT was used to deduce the capture rate of MOT.

Abstract:We demonstrate a Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT) configuration which employs optical forces due to light scattering between electronically excited states of the atom. With the standard MOT laser beams propagating along the {\it x}- and {\it y}- directions, the laser beams along the {\it z}-direction are at a different wavelength that couples two sets of {\it excited} states. We demonstrate efficient cooling and trapping of cesium atoms in a vapor cell and sub-Doppler cooling on both the red and blue sides of the two-photon resonance. The technique demonstrated in this work may have applications in background-free detection of trapped atoms, and in assisting laser-cooling and trapping of certain atomic species that require cooling lasers at inconvenient wavelengths.
Intense source of cold cesium atoms based on a two-dimensional magneto–optical trap with independent axial cooling and pushing*

Abstract:We report our studies on an intense source of cold cesium atoms based on a two-dimensional (2D) magneto-optical trap (MOT) with independent axial cooling and pushing. The new-designed source, proposed as 2D-HP MOT, uses hollow laser beams for axial cooling and a thin pushing laser beam to extract a cold atomic beam. With the independent pushing beam, the atomic flux can be substantially optimized. The total atomic flux maximum obtained in the 2D-HP MOT is 4.02 x 10(10) atoms/s, increased by 60 percent compared to the traditional 2D(+) MOT in our experiment. Moreover, with the pushing power 10 mu W and detuning 0 Gamma, the 2D-HP MOT can generate a rather intense atomic beam with the concomitant light shift suppressed by a factor of 20. The axial velocity distribution of the cold cesium beams centers at 6.8 m/s with an FMHW of about 2.8 m/s. The dependences of the atomic flux on the pushing power and detuning are studied in detail. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical model.

Abstract:Optical dipole trap (ODT) is becoming an important tool of manipulating neutral atoms. In this paper ODT is realized with a far-off resonant laser beam strongly focused in the magneto-optical trap (MOT) of cesium atoms. The light shift is measured by simply monitoring the fluorescence of the atoms in the magneto-optical trap and the optical dipole trap simultaneously. The advantages of our experimental scheme are discussed, and the effect of the beam waist and power on the potential of dipole trap as well as heating rate is analyzed.

Abstract:Based on our work on single cesium atoms trapped in a large-magnetic-gradient vapour-cell magneto-optical trap （MOT）,the signal-to-noise ratio （SNR） is remarkably improved.Also a far-off-resonance optical dipole trap （FORT） formed by a strongly-focused 1064 nm single frequency Nd:YVO 4 laser beam is introduced.One cesium atom is prepared in the MOT,and then it can transfer successfully between the MOT and the FORT which is overlapped with the MOT.Utilizing the effective transfer,the lifetime of single atoms trapped in the FORT is measured to be 6.9± 0.3 s.Thus we provide a system where the atomic qubit can be coherently manipulated.

Abstract:Absorption spectra of cold caesium atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap are measured around D-2 line at 852 nm with a weak probe beam. Absorption reduction dip due to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect induced by the cooling/trapping field in a V-type three-level system and a gain peak near the cycling transition are clearly observed. Several mechanisms mixed with EIT effect in a normal V-type three-level system are briefly discussed. A simple theoretical analysis based on a dressed-state model is presented for interpretation of the absorption spectra.

Abstract:We describe a three-dimensional model of the magneto-optical trap (MOT) for the simplest case of (1+3)-level atoms. The atomic density matrix equations are solved up to eighth order in the Rabi frequency and compared with experimental observations. We propose that coherences between the excited state sublevels can largely explain the dependence of the atomic temperature on detuning and light intensity.

Abstract:We build up a novel setup of a two-dimensional (2D) Rb-85 magneto-optical trap (MOT) with a high optical depth (OD) of 38. Such a MOT trap of Rb-85 has several advantages as compared to the normal three-dimensional ellipsoidal MOT. Firstly, it will greatly enhance atom-photon interaction due to the large OD. Then, the dephasing caused by the magnetic gradient will be decreased in the long axis of the 2D MOT, which we want to avoid from in the experiments. The metastable ground level dephasing rate was gamma(21) = 0.008 gamma(31), which is much less than that in a normal MOT. The total number of atoms in this MOT was measured to be 9.1 x 10(8).
Optical cooling and trapping of highly magnetic atoms : the benefits of a spontaneous spin polarization

Abstract:From the study of long-range-interacting systems to the simulation of gauge fields, open-shell lanthanide atoms with their large magnetic moment and narrow optical transitions open novel directions in the field of ultracold quantum gases. As for other atomic species, the magnetooptical trap (MOT) is the working horse of experiments but its operation is challenging, due to the large electronic spin of the atoms. Here we present an experimental study of narrow-line dysprosium MOTs. We show that the combination of radiation pressure and gravitational forces leads to a spontaneous polarization of the electronic spin. The spin composition is measured using a Stern–Gerlach separation of spin levels, revealing that the gas becomes almost fully spinpolarized for large laser frequency detunings. In this regime, we reach the optimal operation of the MOT, with samples of typically 3 108 ́ atoms at a temperature of 15 μK. The spin polarization reduces the complexity of the radiative cooling description, which allows for a simple model accounting for our measurements. We also measure the rate of density-dependent atom losses, finding good agreement with a model based on light-induced Van der Waals forces. A minimal two-body loss rate 2 10 11 b ~ ́ cm s is reached in the spin-polarized regime. Our results constitute a benchmark for the experimental study of ultracold gases of magnetic lanthanide atoms.

Abstract:We have established a cesium double magneto-optical trap(double MOT) system,and realized transferring cold atoms from the vapor-cell MOT to the ultra-high-vacuum(UHV) MOT by continuous transfer laser.On the base of our former work on transferring atoms by weak resonance laser,we extended red detuning of transfer beam to 2.0 GHz,and increased the laser power.We have studied on the transportation of cold atoms.It is demonstrated that the stronger laser power would make the transportation much more efficient if the detuning is far off-resonance.It is induced by the confinement and guidance of cold atoms due to the transverse dipole force of the transfer beam.

Abstract:We report the basic idea and experimental demonstration of measuring the temperature of cold cesium atomic cloud confined in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) by analyzing absorption spectrum observed in the short-distance time-of-flight (TOF) method. Compared with the conventional TOF scheme, we measure the temperature of cold atomic cloud in MOT by short-distance TOF method for our small vapor cell. If the cold atomic cloud is released, it will fall and expand due to gravity and its initial velocity distribution. Utilizing a cylindrical resonant probe beam positioned several millimeters beneath the MOT ( in this paper, we analyzed the cases for 3mm, 5mm, and 8mm of center-to-center distance between the MOT region and the probe beam, respectively). we can record the short-distance TOF absorption spectrum with a photodiode when cold atoms go through the probe region. Analysis of the short-distance TOF absorption spectrum yields the effective temperature of the cold cloud in MOT.
Maximizing the capture velocity of molecular magneto-optical traps with Bayesian optimization

Abstract:Magneto-optical trapping (MOT) is a key technique on the route towards ultracold molecular ensembles. However, the realization and optimization of magneto-optical traps with their wide parameter space is particularly difficult. Here, we present a very general method for the optimization of molecular magneto-optical trap operation by means of Bayesian optimization (BO). As an example for a possible application, we consider the optimization of a calcium fluoride (CaF) MOT for maximum capture velocity. We find that both the $X^2\Sigma^+\,$ to $A^2\Pi_{1/2}\,$ and the $X^2\Sigma^+\,$ to $B^2\Sigma^+\,$ transition to allow for capture velocities larger than $20$ m/s with $24$ m/s and $23$ m/s respectively at a total laser power of $200$ mW. In our simulation, the optimized capture velocity depends logarithmically on the beam power within the simulated power range of $25$ to $400$ mW. Applied to heavy molecules such as BaH and BaF with their low capture velocity MOTs it might offer a route to far more robust magneto-optical trapping.

Magneto-optical trap performance for high-bandwidth applications

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a magneto-optical trap (MOT) operating at high-bandwidth. We find the absolute importance of high recapture efficiency between cycles to maintain a practical atom number. We develop a simple model accounting for MOT trapping forces and pressure induced collisions and validate with experimental data using $\mathrm{{}^{87}Rb}$. This is then applied to quantum sensing predicting a shot noise limited sensitivity of $\mathrm{10^{-7}g/\sqrt{Hz}}$ for a gravimeter at 100 Hz operation. The results are useful for understanding MOT operation at high-bandwidth, particularly in the context of developing mobile high-bandwidth quantum inertial sensors targeting dynamic environments and navigation applications.
