Abstract:An iterative algorithm for solving nonlinear inverse problems in the photothermal detection is presented. The basic idea of the algorithm is that the nonlinear inverse problem in the frequency domain is solved by a hybrid of Newton-like iterative method, pseudoinverse technique, and finite difference method. The numerical simulation shows the algorithm is effective for profile reconstruction of the thermal conductivity in the case of errorless data.

Abstract:A new method to reconstruct the continuously inhomogeneous thermal conductivity-depth profiles of solid samples from photoacoustic or photothermal measurements by employing a hybrid of a Newton-like iterative method and a regularization method is presented. Three different error functions are defined in order to seek the proper regularization parameters automatically. Generally, the photoacoustic or photothermal signal is proportional to the temperature variation of the sample's surface, therefore the profile's reconstruction requires only measurements of the photoacoustic or photothermal signal over a sufficiently wide frequency range. The numerical experiments demonstrate that this algorithm is effective and stable for the reconstruction of profiles from the measured data with random noise.

Abstract:Infrared thermography is widely used to detect abnormal body temperature because of its noncontact and large scale. Attenuation during infrared propagation causes the measured temperature to always be less than the actual value. This article proposes a novel method of temperature calibration based on Bayesian inference. In the first step, we propose an improved infrared radiation model (IIRM), which accounts for emissivity and measures the distance between the radiation source and the infrared imager. This study leverages naive Bayesian inference (NBI) to derive surface emissivity. Then, using the improved model, the parameters of the model and the temperature distribution are reconstructed by joint maximum a posterior (JMAP). The IIRM and JMAP method (IIRM-JMAP) improved the accuracy of temperature measurement. The improved infrared thermal radiation model is suitable for measuring scenarios with different measuring distances, different humidity factors, and different emissivities. The proposed method has been validated to have small errors through various experiments on a blackbody and high-speed direct-drive blower.

Abstract:The frequency bandwidth of photothermal technique for thermal conductivity depth profiling has been studied, which is based on an iterative numerical algorithm for inverse calculation of inhomogeneous thermal conductivity depth profiles of solid samples. This inversion algorithm should require a sufficient frequency bandwidth since the numerical experiments have demonstrated that systematic errors will occur in the inversion from insufficient data. According to the thermal wave propagation property, at low frequency range, the thermal wave can penetrate into deep region of the sample, but it will depress spatial resolution because of its long thermal wavelength. Nevertheless, lack of low frequency the detected information will cause the derivation of the depth profiling in the deep part. On the other hand, with high frequency, the thermal wave only can penetrate into shallow regions near the surface of the sample, although the spatial resolution will be intensified because of its short thermal wavelength. However, lack of high frequency information will induce the depth profiling derivation near the surface layer. Theoretical analyses have indicated that there is a high frequency fhigh, at which or over the amplitude of the surface temperature tends to be proportional inversely to square root of frequency f, but the phase tends to a constant 0.25π. Besides, there is a low frequency flow, at which or below the amplitude will tend to be inversely proportional to f and the phase will tend to a constant 0.5π under the heat-insulation boundary condition at the rear surface. With the frequency bandwidth (flow,fhigh) all the necessary information is essentially included for reconstructing the depth profiling. Practically, the numerical experiments have also demonstrated the frequency bandwidth can be less than (flow,fhigh) based on the investigated conditions, which will be described in detail in the paper.

Abstract:We present a multiplicative-regularized subspace-based optimization method for solving inverse scattering problems where scatterers are piecewise homogeneous. The proposed inversion algorithm not only has the advantages of low computational complexity and better stability against noise, but also exhibits the edge-preserving ability. The extension of the method to the twofold subspace-based optimization method is discussed. Numerical simulations validate the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate regularization of linear inverse problems with irregular noise. In particular, we consider the case that the noise can be preprocessed by certain adjoint embedding operators. By introducing the consequent preprocessed problem, we provide convergence analysis for general regularization schemes under standard assumptions. Furthermore, for a special case of Tikhonov regularization in Computerized Tomography, we show that our approach leads to a novel (Fourier-based) filtered backprojection algorithm. Numerical examples with different parameter choice rules verify the efficiency of our proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Despite numerous studies of inverse heat conduction problems (IHCP) over the last several decades, their solutions still suffer from the mathematical difficulties and the bottleneck of currently available numerical methods for large-scale problems. In this paper, we present a robust and efficient algorithm for the solution of a specific type of three-dimensional (3D) IHCP commonly involved in various engineering applications. The solution method incorporates the Tikhonov regularization for tackling the severe ill-posedness and the conjugate gradient (CG) method for solving the resulting minimization problems. A model function approach is used to significantly reduce the effort needed to find the optimal Tikhonov regularization parameter. The proposed solution method requires no a priori knowledge of the measurement noise and is much more computationally efficient than the traditional Tikhonov regularization-based inversion approaches. Thus, it can be used for the efficient solution of large-scale practical problems. Two simulation case studies of practical significance are presented to validate and assess the performance of the proposed method. Finally, the solution method is successfully applied to the reconstruction of instantaneous heat fluxes from experimentally measured temperature data.

Abstract:In this work, an accurate regularization technique based on the Meyer wavelet method is developed to solve the ill-posed backward heat conduction problem with time-dependent thermal diffusivity factor in an infinite "strip". In principle, the extremely ill-posedness of the considered problem is caused by the amplified infinitely growth in the frequency components which lead to a blow-up in the representation of the solution. Using the Meyer wavelet technique, some new stable estimates are proposed in the Hölder and Logarithmic types which are optimal in the sense of given by Tautenhahn. The stability and convergence rate of the proposed regularization technique are proved. The good performance and the high-accuracy of this technique is demonstrated through various one and two dimensional examples. Numerical simulations and some comparative results are presented.

Abstract:Photoacoustic measurement techniques can be used to determine thermal properties on and below the sample's surface, thus subsurface thermal inhomogeneities, such as continuous profiles of thermal parameters, become measurable by photoacoustic methods. In this paper, the study is focused on the quantitative characterization of material modifications in subsurface layers of laser-hardened Al alloy samples. The variation of surface temperature is measured by PA technique. Then a new numerical algorithm, carried out by employing the pulsed spectrum technique and the regularization method, is used to reconstruct thermal conductivity depth profiles, The experiment results demonstrate that the experiment and the algorithm are very effective for microstructure depth profile reconstruction by nondestructive method.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate an inverse problem of identifying the space-time dependent coefficients for diffusion equations with Neumann boundary conditions. The additional data and priori positivity information are preset to uniquely identify the space-time dependent diffusion coefficients. In order to overcome its instability and complexity of space-time function inversion, the inverse problem of diffusion coefficient identification is transformed into an optimization problem with regularized functional. A priori selection strategy of regularization parameter is presented and the convergence rate of the regularized solution is derived. Numerical examples show that the proposed algorithm is effective and applicable to the high-dimensional cases

Abstract:<p>When gun barrels are multiple fired, monitoring the non-smooth heat flux of the gun with the additional input data makes it possible to identify the corrosion of the gun. Based on this background, we study the identification of the non-smooth heat flux in a 1-dimensional heat transfer system. Aiming to overcome the non-smoothness of the unknown heat flux and to simplify the choice of regularization parameter, we transform the inverse problem to a constraint optimization problem and prove the existence and convergence properties of the regularization solution. Then an algorithm based on minimizing the data-match term and penalty term alternatively is proposed. Finally, a numerical experiment supports our regularization scheme quantitatively, especially for input data with high noise level.</p>

Abstract:We introduce a regularization method with two differential operators for solving a linear ill-posed operator equation system. The existence and uniqueness of regularized solutions to the problem are derived. With an a priori as well as an a posteriori parameter choice strategy, convergence and convergence rates of the regularized solution are also obtained. As an application, we apply the regularization to a simultaneous inversion of the source term and the initial value problem for a heat conduction equation, numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Regularization promotes well-posedness in solving an inverse problem with incomplete measurement data. The regularization term is typically designed based on a priori characterization of the unknown signal, such as sparsity or smoothness. The standard inhomogeneous regularization incorporates a spatially changing exponent $p$ of the standard $\ell_p$ norm-based regularization to recover a signal whose characteristic varies spatially. This study proposes a weighted inhomogeneous regularization that extends the standard inhomogeneous regularization through new exponent design and weighting using spatially varying weights. The new exponent design avoids misclassification when different characteristics stay close to each other. The weights handle another issue when the region of one characteristic is too small to be recovered effectively by the $\ell_p$ norm-based regularization even after identified correctly. A suite of numerical tests shows the efficacy of the proposed weighted inhomogeneous regularization, including synthetic image experiments and real sea ice recovery from its incomplete wave measurements.

Abstract:<p>The work seeks to develop an algorithm for image reconstruction by directly inverting the non-linear data model in spectral CT. Using the non-linear data model, we formulate the image-reconstruction problem as a non-convex optimization program, and develop a non-convex primal-dual (NCPD) algorithm to solve the program. We devise multiple convergence conditions and perform verification studies numerically to demonstrate that the NCPD algorithm can solve the non-convex optimization program and under appropriate data condition, can invert the non-linear data model. Using the NCPD algorithm, we then reconstruct monochromatic images from simulated and real data of numerical and physical phantoms acquired with a standard, full-scan dual-energy configuration. The result of the reconstruction studies shows that the NCPD algorithm can correct accurately for the non-linear beam-hardening effect. Furthermore, we apply the NCPD algorithm to simulated and real data of the numerical and physical phantoms collected with non-standard, short-scan dual-energy configurations, and obtain monochromatic images comparable to those of the standard, full-scan study, thus revealing the potential of the NCPD algorithm for enabling non-standard scanning configurations in spectral CT, where the existing indirect methods are limited.</p>
