Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shocks in general have strong impact on particles and electromagnetic field. In this study, we have examined the dynamics of cross-energy ions and plasma waves observed by the Van Allen Probe B satellite which was located near the equator at the noon sector after the impact of an IP shock on 27 Feb, 2014. We found that the ULF waves and electromagnetic waves are induced and the differential fluxes of protons with different energies increased or decreased after the IP shock arrival. For low energy ions (10-100eV), the perpendicular flux increased intensively due to ExB drift and betatron acceleration. These adiabatic processes also accounted for the special behavior of 10~200 keV ions, which are due to the positive gradient in phase space density before the IP shock arrival. In addition, the short-lived ultra-low frequency waves triggered by the IP shock interacted with the ~100 keV protons and resulting in the stripes in pitch angle distribution. Meanwhile, the anisotropic ions of ~50-300 keV generate EMIC wave at higher L shell after the shock arrival. This study reveals that an IP shock event can cause comprehensive responses of different energy ions and drive several plasma waves at the same time.

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shocks have great impacts on Earth's magnetosphere, especially in causing global dynamic changes of energetic particles. In order to study the response of energetic electrons (50 keV-1.5 MeV) at geosynchronous orbit to IP shocks, we have systematically analyzed 215 IP shock events based on ACE, GOES, and LANL observations during 1998-2007. Our study shows that after the shock arrival low-energy electron fluxes increase at geosynchronous orbit. However, in higher energy channels fluxes show smaller increases and eventually become unchanged or even decrease. The oscillations of electron fluxes following the shock arrival have also been studied in this paper. Statistical analysis revealed a frequency preference for 2.2 mHz and 3.3 mHz oscillations of energetic electron fluxes. The amplitude of these oscillations is larger under southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) than under northward IMF. Furthermore, oscillations from high-energy and low-energy electron fluxes show different phase characteristics and power distributions. The phase angles of the oscillations are the same in the dawn, dusk, and noon sectors for low-energy channels (50-500 keV), while they have a pi/2 difference between two adjacent local time sectors for high-energy channels (0.5-1.5 MeV). The wave power distribution of electron fluxes shows different dawn-dusk asymmetries for low-energy channels and high-energy channels. The results presented in this paper provide an energetic particle point of view of the magnetospheric response to the interplanetary shock impact.

Abstract:Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves are electrostatic emissions frequently observed in the Earth’s magnetosphere. By precipitating magnetospheric hot electrons into the ionosphere, ECH waves play a critical role in the formation of diffuse aurora. Previous research has extensively investigated the strong dependence of ECH waves on the geomagnetic activities. In this study, we present the first report of the prompt response of ECH waves to an interplanetary shock on the basis of WIND and Van Allen Probes observations. Our observations and analyses demonstrate that the interplanetary shock compression can increase >0.1 keV hot electron fluxes in the dayside inner magnetosphere, consequently leading to the prompt intensification of ECH waves by promoting the wave instability. These findings expand our comprehension of the impacts of solar wind disturbances on magnetospheric plasma waves and offer fresh insights into solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.
Energy Conversion and Partition across Interplanetary Shocks in the Solar Wind

Abstract:<div> <div>Solar wind experiences significant heating during its transportation in the heliosphere. How the solar wind is heated is one of the cutting-edge issue in space physics. Interplanetary shocks are considered as one of the mechanism for the heating. When the shocks propagate through the solar wind plasma, the solar wind is compressed and heated. Dissipation of the solar wind turbulence is another mechanism for the heating. It is found that shocks also can amplify the turbulence in the downstream flows. The energy contribution to solar wind heating from the interplanetary shocks needs quantitive clarification. In this work, we estimate the amount of the energy conversion of the shocks in the solar wind, and investigate how the energy is partitioned between different types of bulk averaged energy (including thermal energy, bulk kinetic energy of different plasma species, and magnetic field energy) and turbulent fluctuating energy. Using the measurements from Wind at 1 au, we statistically study the energy conversion and partition at different heliocentric distances, from the inner heliosphere to the outer heliosphere. We estimate the heating rate from the shocks, and compare it with the turbulent heating rate. We find the shock heating is much stronger than the turbulent heating for one shock, but have similar order of magnitude considering the occurrence frequency of the shocks.</div> </div>
Transient Response of Polar-Cusp Ionosphere to an Interplanetary Shock

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shock-driven sudden compression of the Earth's magnetosphere produces electromagnetic disturbances in the polar ionosphere. Several studies have examined the effects of IP shock on magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling systems using all-sky cameras and radars. In this study, we examine responses and drivers of the polar ionosphere following an IP shock compression on 16 June 2012. We observe the vertical drift and concurrent horizontal motion of the plasma. Observations from digisonde located at Antarctic Zhongshan station (ZHO) showed an ionospheric thick E region ionization and associated vertical downward plasma motion at F region. In addition, horizontal ionospheric convection reversals were observed on the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network ZHO and McMurdo radar observations. Findings suggest that the transient convective reversal breaks the original shear equilibrium, it is expected that the IP shock-induced electric field triggers an enhanced velocity shear mapping to the E region. The horizontal motion of the plasma was attributed to only the dusk-to-dawn electric field that existed during the preliminary phase of sudden impulse. We also found that ionospheric convection reversals were driven by a downward field-aligned current. The results of these observations reveal, for the first time, the immediate and direct cusp ionosphere response to the IP shock, which is critical for understanding the global response of the magnetosphere following an abrupt change in Interplanetory Magnetic Field (IMF) and solar wind conditions.

Abstract:Using the recently developed PPMLR-MHD code, we present 3D global simulation of the interaction of the interplanetary(IP) shock with the magnetosphere with emphasis on the the effect of shock orientation. We investigate its impact on the sudden commencement(SC) of geomagnetic storms and the magnetospheric responses. Generally speaking, a highly oblique shock causes asymmetric compression of the magnetosphere with respect to the noon-midnight meridian, and requires more time to compress the forward part of the magnetosphere, which producing longer rise time of SC. Even if the solar wind dynamic pressure changed similarly at a solar wind monitor, the responses of the magnetosphere could vary depending on the orientation of the causative IP shock. The effect of the shock orientation is of great help to understand space weather processes.
Solar Wind Energy Budget Dilemma During Substorms Induced by Interplanetary Shocks

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shocks can trigger substorms when they interact the magnetosphere. In study of Hajra and Tsurutani (2018, https://doi.org/10.1016/0032-0633(77)90001-0), they reported a shock-induced substorm event where the energy dissipation exceeded the energy input (e parameter). In this study, we examined 198 IP shock-induced substorms from 1995 to 2021 and found 32 underpowered events where the energy dissipation exceeded the energy input calculated from IP shock sheath parameters. We also found underpowered events using other newly developed energy functions. To resolve this dilemma, we introduce the concept of dual compressions of the interplanetary magnetic field by both the IP shock and the bow shock, respectively. Based on in situ observations in the magnetosheath, we obtained a set of new parameters from the dual compressions. The stronger magnetic field resulting from the double compressions reconnects the geomagnetic field, leading to an increased input of energy into the magnetosphere. This new energy input is generally sufficient to balance the energy dissipation.
CORRELATIONS OF Dst INDEX WITH THE INTERPLANETARY ELECTRIC FIELD

Abstract:Correlations of the Dst index with various interplanetary parameters are stud ied by using the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field data from the ACE spacecraft. Among all parameters investigated, Ey, the down-dusk component of the interplanetary electric field is found to be best correlated with the Dst index. During strong and moderate geomagnetic storms, it is seen that 2 to 3 hours before the storm main phase starts, Ey suddenly begins to increase and that the increase of Ey, is almost synchronous with the decrease of the Dst, with a time a head about 2 to 3 hours. Such an abruptly changing characteristic curve of Ey is much easier to be identified than those corresponding curves of V , V2Bz .. VB2 and e. Weak disturbances in the magnetospheric background field, fluctuations of both the IMF Bz and the interplanetary Ey all strongly influence the development of storms, causing multiple-step main phase decrease and enhancement of the storm intensity. The physical mechanism responsible for the close correlation of Dst with the interplanetary electric field is discussed. A viewpoint that the present study of multiple-step main phase storms needs to be improved is proposed.
Statistic Study on Asymmetric Propagation of Flare-Associated Interplanetary Shock-Waves

Abstract:On the basis of the comprehensive studies of solar flare-associated geophysical effects (geomagnetic disturbances and the Forbush decreases of cosmic rays), multi-spacecraft observations of solar wind and interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations, we have furthered our knowledge of the flare-shock wave propagation in the interplanetary space. The main results are that the flare-shock wave is usually an asymmetric propagation related to the flare normal, the direction of the fastest propagation velocity in longitudes tends to deflect towards the interplanetary spiral magnetic field and that in latitudes approaches heliospheric, current sheet, the dynamic parameters (V, P, N, T, β, etc.) and the. shock wave energy. E, are higher in the southeast than in the northwest of the flare shock wave, and conversely, the magnetic field is weaker in the southeast than in the northwest. Based on the results, we proposed a 3-dimensional asymmetrical model of flare-shock wave propagationst. This model is consistent with recent statistical studies obtained by analysing a great deal of spacecraft observation data, and may naturally explain the asymmetric distribution of geomagnetical effects in company with the parent flare positions. The results of this paper could help develop the propagation theory of shock waves and the prediction of the solar-terrestrial disturbance events.
Propagation of Interplanetary Shock Excited Ultra Low Frequency (ulf) Waves in Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Atmosphere-Multi-Spacecraft "cluster" and Ground-Based Magnetometer Observations

Abstract:The ultra low frequency (ULF) wave in magnetosphere can act as an important means for solar wind energy inward transmission. This paper quantitatively analyzes the propagation process of the ULF wave triggered by the interplanetary shock propagating from inner magnetosphere equatorial plane along magnetic field lines to the top of the ionosphere and below ionosphere propagating process and establishes a relatively complete magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere propagation model which can be used to study the relationship between the amplitude of the ULF waves triggered by the interplanetary shock wave in magnetospheric space and the magnetic effect caused by the ULF waves. After a comparison with recent observations, we found that: in the event during November 7, 2004 that an interplanetary shock wave interacted with the magnetosphere, Cluster satellites observed that electric field fluctuations and the band-pass filtered result of ground stations meridional component had similar characteristics. Comparing with the geomagnetic measurement near the footprints, we found that the electric field disturbance in the magnetosphere spread along the ground magnetic field lines in the form of the ULF waves and changed into geomagnetic disturbance. The result reveals that the ULF wave is in contact with the ground geomagnetic observation. The ULF waves couple with ionized components in ionosphere and spread to the ground in the form of electromagnetic waves. In this research, we believe that the magnetosphere, ionosphere and ground magnetic effects caused by interplanetary shock wave are the same physical phenomena responding in different locations. Based on the overall consideration of entire electromagnetic response to the interplanetary shock wave, we found that the correlation between CLUSTER multi-satellite observation and geomagnetic station observation is due to the ULF wave propagated in magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere system, and we quantitatively interpreted this response process.
The Effect of the Heliospheric Current Sheet on Interplanetary Shocks

Abstract:Using 180 interplanetary (IP) shock events associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) during 1997 – 2005, we investigate the influence of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) upon the propagation and geoeffectiveness of IP shocks. Our preliminary results are: (1) The majority of CME-driving IP shocks occurred near the HCS. (2) The numbers of shock events and related geomagnetic storms observed when the Earth and the solar source are located on the same side of the HCS, represented by f SS and f SG , respectively, are obviously higher than those when the Earth and the solar source are located on the opposite sides of the HCS, denoted by f OS and f OG , with f SS / f OS =126/54, f SG / f OG = 91/36. (3) Parameter jumps across the shock fronts for the same-side events are also higher than those for the opposite-side events, and the stronger shocks (Δ V ≥ 200 km s −1 ) are mainly attributed to be same-side events, with f SSh / f OSh = 28/15, where f SSh and f OSh are numbers of stronger shocks which belong to same-side events and opposite-side events, respectively. (4) The level of the geomagnetic disturbances is higher for the same-side events than for the opposite-side events. The ratio of the number of intense magnetic storms (Dst < −100) triggered by same-side events to those triggered by opposite-side events is 25/10. (5) We propose an empirical model to predict the arrival time of the shock at the Earth, whose accuracy is comparable to that of other prevailing models. These results show that the HCS is an important physical structure, which probably plays an important role in the propagation of interplanetary shocks and their geoeffectiveness.
Energy transfer during intense geomagnetic storms driven by interplanetary coronal mass ejections and their sheath regions

Abstract:The interaction of the solar wind and Earth's magnetosphere is complex, and the phenomenology of the interaction is very different for interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) compared to their sheath regions. In this paper, a total of 71 intense (Dst <= -100 nT) geomagnetic storm events in 1996-2006, of which 51 are driven by ICMEs and 20 by sheath regions, are examined to demonstrate similarities and differences in the energy transfer. Using superposed epoch analysis, the evolution of solar wind energy input and dissipation is investigated. The solar wind-magnetosphere coupling functions and geomagnetic indices show a more gradual increase and recovery during the ICME-driven storms than they do during the sheath-driven storms. However, the sheath-driven storms have larger peak values. In general, solar wind energy input (the epsilon parameter) and dissipation show similar trends as the coupling functions. The trends of ion precipitation and the ratio of ion precipitation to the total (ion and electron) are quite different for both classes of events. There are more precipitating ions during the peak of sheath-driven storms. However, a quantitative assessment of the relative importance of the different energy dissipation branches shows that the means of input energy and auroral precipitation are significantly different for both classes of events, whereas Joule heating, ring current, and total output energy display no distinguishable differences. The means of electron precipitation are significantly different for both classes of events. However, ion precipitation exhibits no distinguishable differences. The energy efficiency bears no distinguishable difference between these two classes of events. Ionospheric processes account for the vast majority of the energy, with the ring current only being 12%-14% of the total. Moreover, the energy partitioning for both classes of events is similar.
Solar Wind Parameters and Geomagnetic Indices for Four Different Interplanetary Shock/icme Structures

Abstract:Interplanetary shocks associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have very profound effects on geomagnetic storms. In order to investigate the role of the interplanetary shock properties and pre-conditions, we present a statistical study of 280 interplanetary shocks and their associated geomagnetic activities during 1998-2007. The results show that perpendicular shocks can cause more intense geomagnetic activities compared with parallel ones under the same IMF pre-condition. Through a southward IMF pre-condition, interplanetary shocks and driven ICMEs can intensify geomagnetic storms significantly. It is revealed that interplanetary shocks would intensify negative IMF B-z pre-condition by a factor of 3 to 6. This effect would enhance geomagnetic storms greatly. The result shows that there are 74% of intense (D-st <= -100 nT) and 69% of super (D-st <= -200 nT) geomagnetic storms related to a negative IMF B-z pre-condition.

Abstract:Based on 297 interplanetary shock waves and corresponding geomagnetic disturbances, the relation between their structures has been studied. For the case in which the interplanetary magnetic field lies basically in the ecliptic plane, we found that (1) the temporal profile ofgeomagnetic disturbance is mainly determined by the plasma state of the shock waves, especially, the closed relation exists between the plasma temperature profile and the recovery phase of geomagnetic disturbances; (2) shock wave energy transfer index, Fs., as defined in the paper, can give a good prediction of the temporal profiles of geomagnetic disturbances. Thus, it may be deduced that there is a basic energy transfer mechanism associated with plasma processes, which would control geomagnetic disturbance profiles, when a southward-component of interplanetary magnetic field is not significant.
Kinetic Properties of an Interplanetary Shock Propagating Inside a Coronal Mass Ejection

Abstract:We investigate the kinetic properties of a typical fast-mode shock inside an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) observed on 1998 August 6 at 1 au, including particle distributions and wave analysis with the in situ measurements from Wind. Key results are obtained concerning the shock and the shock-ICME interaction at kinetic scales: (1) gyrating ions, which may provide energy dissipation at the shock in addition to wave-particle interactions, are observed around the shock ramp; (2) despite the enhanced proton temperature anisotropy of the shocked plasma, the low plasma beta inside the ICME constrains the shocked plasma under the thresholds of the ion cyclotron and mirror-mode instabilities; (3) whistler heat flux instabilities, which can pitch-angle scatter halo electrons through a cyclotron resonance, are observed around the shock, and can explain the disappearance of bi-directional electrons (BDEs) inside the ICME together with normal betatron acceleration; (4) whistler waves near the shock are likely associated with the whistler heat flux instabilities excited at the shock ramp, which is consistent with the result that the waves may originate from the shock ramp; (5) the whistlers share a similar characteristic with the shocklet whistlers observed by Wilson et al., providing possible evidence that the shock is decaying because of the strong magnetic field inside the ICME.

Properties of a Supercritical Quasi-perpendicular Interplanetary Shock Propagating in the Terrestrial Foreshock Region

Abstract:We investigate the properties of an interplanetary (IP) shock (M (f) = 2.1, theta = 80 degrees) that was detected by Wind on 1999 September 12 and was magnetically connected to the terrestrial bow shock. Key results are obtained concerning how the IP shock modifies the terrestrial foreshock electron and ion dynamics: (1) Intensive Langmuir waves were detected downstream of the IP shock due to the enhanced penetrating terrestrial foreshock electron beams. (2) Whistler heat flux instabilities associated with the oblique precursor whistler pitch-angle scatter the suprathermal electrons, together with the normal betatron acceleration that occurs across the IP shock. (3) The IP shock interacts with the antisunward propagating Alfven waves/fluctuations, and the shocked plasma shows both Alfvenic and mirror-mode features where Alfven waves were separated into two parts propagating in opposite directions. (4) Intense specularly reflected gyrating ions were detected around the IP shock, which indicates that the energy dissipation effects at the IP shock depend on both reflected ions and the waves intrinsic to the shock. These results provide new insights into the interaction between an IP shock and the terrestrial foreshock.

Abstract:In situ observations of interplanetary (IP) coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and IP shocks are important to study as they are the main components of the solar activity. Hundreds of IP shocks have been detected by various space missions at different times and heliocentric distances. Some of these are followed by clearly identified drivers, while some others are not. In this study, we carry out a statistical analysis of the distributions of plasma and magnetic parameters of the IP shocks recorded at various distances to the Sun. We classify the shocks according to the heliocentric distance, namely from 0.29 to 0.99 AU (Helios-1/2); near 1 AU (Wind, ACE and STEREO-A/B); and from 1.35 to 5.4 AU (Ulysses). We also differentiate the IP shocks into two populations, those with a detected ICME and those without one. We find, as expected, that there are no significant differences in the results from spacecraft positioned at 1 AU. Moreover, the distributions of shock parameters, as well as the shock normal have no significant variations with the heliocentric distance. Additionally, we investigate how the number of shocks associated to stream-interaction regions (SIRs) increases with distance in proportion of ICME/shocks. From 1 to 5 AU, SIRs/ shock occurrence increases slightly from 21% to 34%, in contrast ICME/shocks occurrence decreases from 47% to 17%. We find also indication of an asymmetry induced by the Parker spiral for SIRs and none for ICMEs.

The Study on a Solar Storm and Its Interplanetary and Geomagnetic Effects

Abstract:We present a detailed study on a solar storm occurred on 2014 January 7. By using the remote-sensing observations of solar activities at multiple wavelengths from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), the eruptions of the solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) are investigated. Based on the measurement of energetic protons from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and the in-situ plasma measurement from the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) at the solar-terrestrial L1 point, the solar energetic particle (SEP) event and interplanetary CME (ICME) accompanied by the solar storm, and the shock driven by the ICME are analyzed. The influence of the solar storm on the geomagnetic fields is also analyzed with the ground-based magnetic data. The results in this study show that: (1) The initial time of impulsive phase of the solar flare and the ejection time of the CME are temporally in accordance with each other. (2) The solar protons are mainly accelerated by the CME-driven shock, rather than by the magnetic reconnection in the flare, and the protons are released when the CME travels to 7.7 solar radius. (3) The widths of the interplanetary shock sheath and the ICME itself are derived to be 0.22 AU and 0.26 AU, respectively. (4) The interplanetary shock and the ICME give rise to substorms and aurora, whereas no obvious geomagnetic storm is detected. The reason is that the ICME does not contain a regular structure of magnetic cloud (MC) or evident southward component of magnetic field.
