Abstract:To study the size effects in ferroelectric thin films, we investigated the crystal structure and Raman spectra of BaTiO3 thin films deposited by rf magnetron sputtering technique. The results indicated that the characteristic of tetragonal phase disappears for thin films with an average size below 55 nm. The lattice parameters and the frequencies of Raman bands strongly depend on grain sizes of the thin films and monotonously increase with decreasing grain size. The possible origin for the size effects is discussed.

The different transitional behaviors were observed in the measurements of internal friction in the films with different thickness. The stress in the films plays an important role in size effect of thin film. It was also confirmed by the measurement of Raman spectrum.

Abstract:BaTiO3 thin films were deposited using the r.f. magnetron sputtering technique on unheated fused quartz, poly-crystalline Pt and (111)Si substrates. The films with different grain sizes were obtained through post-deposition heat treatment. The optical transmittance of the films with different grain sizes on fused quartz substrates was measured and the observed shift of the energy gap with grain size was discussed.

Abstract:The strain and size effects on the ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3 films are studied using the molecular dynamics method based on a shell model. It is found that from microscopic view, these two effects share the same physical nature, i.e., the resulting crystal cell distortions lead to the separation of negative and positive charge centres. The strain and size effects are therefore coupled, and the critical thicknesses of films would depend on the in-plane strains, which provides a possible interpretation on the discrepancies among the experimental measurements of the critical thicknesses. A polarization map is given to clearly reflect the relations among the size, strain and polarization of the nano films.

Abstract:BaTiO3 ultrafine particles of different size were prepared by Sol-Gel process. Their microstructure was examined at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the dielectric properties of the pressed pellets and fired ceramics of these particles was studied. With the decrease of particle size d, the Curie temperature decreases while the tetragonal-orthorhombic and orthorhombic-trigonal phase transition temperature increase, and the three dielectric peak become lower and broader and eventually disappear in the following sequence: trigonal-orthorhombic, orthorhombic-tetragonal, tetragonal-cubic. The critical size at which ferroelectricity disappears was determined by dielectric measurement, which agrees with that determined by XRD technique.

Abstract:BaTiO3 ultrafine powders were prepared by Sol-Gel method and ceramics with various grain size were obtained by firing the powders at different temperatures. The room temperature crystal structure was studied by X-ray diffraction. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant is obtained using pressed powders as well as ceramics. Dielectric peaks show that when the grain size decreases, the Curie temperature decreases while the tetragonal-orthorhombic and orthorhombic-rhombohedral transition temperatures increase. With decreasing grain size, the three dielectric peaks lower and broaden and eventually disappear in the following sequence: rhombohedral-orthorhombic, orthorhombic-tetragonal and tetragonal-cubic. The critical size at which ferroelectricity disappears is determined by dielectric measurement. Its value is in agreement with that obtained by crystal ratio measurement in the literature.

Abstract:Size effect on the crystalline phase contents has been investigated for BaTiO3 ceramics and varied from 100 to 8 nm by means of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Mixed phases of tetragonal and orthorhombic at room temperature were corroborated by Raman spectroscopy. Rietveld refinement for X-ray diffraction data revealed that a locally orthorhombic structure preceded the globally tetragonal form with the grain decreasing, and a modified brick wall model was used to predict the dielectric constant between 100 and 8 nm, which demonstrated that grain boundary effects, coexisted structures took the dominant role in determining the ultrafine nanocrystalline BaTiO3 ceramics dielectric constant.

Abstract:The effect of grain size on domain structure in unsupported PbTiO3 thin films with grains (70-250 nm) was studied by using TEM. It is found that there probably exists a critical grain size near 200 nm, at which an abrupt change in domain structure occurs. Above this size, domains, which are lamellar microtwins, appear in almost all of the coarse grains. The domain width decreases with grain size. Below this size, however, most of the grains are single-domain ones, while some irregular and curved domain walls appear only in a small portion of the fine grains. The number of the single-domain grains increases with decreasing grain size. Such a grain-size dependence of domain structure is correlated with the anomalous behaviours of the coercive field E(c) and dielectric constant epsilon(r) in ferroelectric thin films. This interesting result has not been reported before.

Abstract:The monodispersed BaTiO3 nanocrystals have been synthesized by one-step solvothermal method. The average particle size of BaTiO3 powders is as small as 5 nm with a narrow size distribution. Using this powder, 5nm bulk dense Nano ceramics have been prepared by pressureless two-step sintering method. The microstructure, properties, phase transition and size effect of BaTiO3 ceramics have been investigated systematically by using TEM, HRTEM, XRD and Raman spectra. The Raman Spectra revealed successive transitions from rhombohedral to orthorhombic, tetragonal and cubic with the temperature increased from −190°C to 500°C. Piezoelectric loop measurement results are also shown that ferroelelctricity could still retained in BaTiO3 ceramics with grain size down to 5 nm.

Abstract:Titanium oxide (TiO2) thin films were prepared by electron-beam evaporation (EBE) method on crystal silicon, and were thermally treated by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE) were used to analyze the crystal structure, band gap, and optical constants evolution of the investigated films. The strongest diffraction peaks in XRD patterns were found to shift to higher 2 theta angle with an increase of film thickness. The lattice spacing decreases and the average grain size increases, indicating the improvement of crystal quality by increasing film thickness. The band gap from well-fitted Forouhi-Bloomer (FB) dispersion model in VASE decreases with an increase of thickness, and one-dimensional quantum confinement effect and disorder effect have been introduced to explain this relation. The refractive indices of TiO2 thin film decrease monotonically with an increase in film thickness in the spectral range from 230 to 800 nm, which can be attributed to the contribution of compressive stress effect. Abstract:Grain size effects on the dielectric properties of BaTiO3 nanoceramics have been studied by using the modified Ginsburg-Landau-Devonshire (GLD) thermodynamic theory. Considering the existence of internal stresses, it is found that with decreasing grain size the transition temperature of cubic-tetragonal phase decreases, while those of tetragonal-orthorhombic and orthorhombic-rhombohedral phases increase. With further reducing grain size, our model predicts that the two ferroelectric structures of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases will become unstable and disappear at a critical size, leaving only one stable ferroelectric phase of rhombohedral structure. Consequently, a theoretical phase diagram of the transition temperature versus grain size is established wherein two triple points and a reentrance behavior are indicated. The results are compared with experimental data.

Abstract:Ferroelectric perovskites such as BaTiO3 and Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 are well-suited for a variety of applications including piezoelectric transducers and actuators, multilayer ceramic capacitors, thermistors with positive temperature coefficient, ultrasonic and electro-optical devices. Ferroelectricity arises from the long-range ordering of elemental dipoles which determines the appearance of a macroscopic polarization and a spontaneous lattice strain. The confinement of a ferroelectric system in a small volume produces a perturbation of the polar order because of the high fraction of surface atoms and ferroelectricity vanishes when the size of the material is reduced below a critical dimension. This critical size is of a few nanometres in the case of epitaxial thin films and of 10-20 nm for nanoparticles and nanoceramics. The change in properties with decreasing physical dimensions is usually referred to as size effect. Thin films and ceramics are particularly prone to show size effects. A progressive variation of dielectric, elastic and piezoelectric properties of ferroelectric ceramics is already observed when the grain size is reduced below ≈10 μm, i.e. at a length scale much larger than the critical size. In this case it is more appropriate to refer to scaling effects as they are not related to material confinement.The aim of this contribution is to review the current understanding of size and scaling effects in perovskite ferroelectric ceramics and, in particular, in BaTiO3. After a short survey on the intrinsic limits of ferroelectricity and on the impact of particle/grain size on phase transitions, the role of interfaces such as ferroelectric/ferroelastic domain walls and grain boundaries in scaling of dielectric and piezoelectric properties will be discussed in detail. Multiple mechanisms combine to produce the observed scaling effects and the maximization of the dielectric constant and piezoelectric properties exhibited by BaTiO3 ceramics for an intermediate grain size of ≈1 μm. The broad dispersion of experimental data is determined by spurious effects related to synthesis, processing and variation of Ba/Ti ratio. Furthermore, we will consider these size effects, and other properties in relation to the downsizing the modern multilayer BaTiO3 based capacitors.

Abstract:In this work, we focus on the thickness dependence of the electric polarization in a freestanding BaTiO3 thin film. The locations of titanium and oxygen ions as well as their relative displacements were directly observed and measured by using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (AC-TEM). It is found that the freestanding BaTiO3 thin film keeps the tetragonal distortion when its thickness is thicker than 4.8nm, while completely loses its ferroelectricity when thinner than 4.4nm. The method of combining high-resolution AC-TEM imaging with the multiparameter simulation unit cell by unit cell was developed to accurately determine each local thickness of the sample. This method is powerful for quantitative analysis in AC-TEM images.

Abstract:The bulk dense nanoceramics BaTiO3 of crystalline size 15-100 nm were prepared by the spark plasma sintering method. In-situ heating Raman spectroscopy revealed the dispersive phase transition character in the nanocrystalline BaTiO3 ceramics. The BaTiO3 ceramics of the nanograin of 15 nm exhibited the similar phase transformations from rhombohedral to orthorhombic to tetragonal to cubic transitions as those in the coarse BaTiO3 ceramics.

Abstract:Highly oriented (001) (La0.26Bi0.74)(2)Ti4O11 thin films are deposited on (100) SrTiO3 substrates using the pulsed laser deposition technique. The grains form a texture of bar-like arrays along SrTiO3 < 110 > directions for the film thickness above 350 nm, in contrast to spherical grains for the reduced film thickness below 220 nm. Xray diffraction patterns show that the highly ordered bar-like grains are the ensemble of two lattice-matched monoclinic (La, Bi)(4)Ti3O12 and TiO2 components above a critical film thickness. Otherwise, the phase decomposes into the random mixture of Bi2Ti2O7 and Bi4Ti3O4 spherical grains in thinner films. The critical thickness can increase up to 440nm as the films are deposited on LaNiO3-buffered SrTiO3 substrates. The electrical measurements show the dielectric enhancement of the multi-components, and comprehensive charge injection into interfacial traps between (La, Bi)(4)Ti3O12 and TiO2 components occurs under the application of a threshold voltage for the realization of high-charge storage.

Abstract:Bi4Ti3O12 nanocrystals (nc-BTO) were prepared by chemical coprecipitation technique. The crystal structure of the nanocrystals covering mean grain sizes from 16 to 48nm was determined by X-ray diffraction and refined by the Rietveld method. Differential thermal analysis was employed to investigate the temperature dependent phase transition behavior in nc-BTO. With decreasing grain size the tetragonal–orthorhombic phase transition temperature decreases and ferroelectricity weakens. A size-driven phase transition was found at a critical size dc=44nm for nc-BTO. The high-temperature tetragonal phase stabilizes at room temperature when d<dc. The origin of the structural anomaly is attributed to higher strain energy induced by lattice strain and to higher inter-phase surface energy difference in nc-BTO system.

Abstract:The size effects of SrTiO3 nanoparticles are investigated by Raman spectroscopy and UV-Visible absorption spectra with changing grain size in the range of 10-80 nm. It is found that the intensity for the first-order TO2 mode increases significantly as the grain size decreases from 80 to 10 nm. Such behavior suggests the presence of the micropolar regions on the grain boundary induced by the enhanced surface-defect dipoles. Moreover, the first-order TO2 and TO3 modes show red-shifts, indicating the increase of the Ti-O bond-length with decreasing grain size of SrTiO3 nanoparticles. The softening of the Raman mode is consistent with the lattice expansion investigated by XRD. In addition, the UV-Visible absorption spectra indicates the enhancement of absorption due to surface distortion states and hence the lattice expansion, which results in the increase of E-g-value.

Abstract:. Raman spectroscopy was used to investigate the lattice dynamics and structural transformations in bismuth titanate (Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 ) nanocrystals prepared by a chemical coprecipitation technique. The crystal structure of the samples of different grain sizes was determined by X-ray-diffraction analysis. The evolution of the Raman spectrum with grain size was characterized by an intensity decrease, a broadening of the line width, a frequency shift, and the disappearance of the Raman mode. The results revealed the appearance of a size-driven phase transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal phases at a critical size of 44 nm. This result is quite consistent with the X-ray-diffraction measurement and differential thermal analysis. The origin was attributed to the grain-size effect and explained by the surface-energy mechanism.
