Abstract:The Fourier transform of stress-relaxation curves allows the data to be examined as a continuous frequency spectrum of loss and storage moduli. Information up to kilohertz frequencies can be recorded and analysed, but the high-frequency information is affected by the finite time taken to strain the specimen. This paper examines the nature of the stress-relaxation experiment as it realistically appears; a finite loading period during which both stress and strain are functions of time, followed by the pure relaxation part of the experiment, during which the strain is held constant. The discrepancy between the forms of the relaxation function obtained after a finite loading period (given by the Boltzmann integral) and after an infinitely small loading period (defined by the Heaviside step function) is considered for a linear viscoelastic material, and the effect that the loading time has on the relaxation function is shown. A deconvolution relationship between stress and strain for the simple case of linear strain application is established, and the effect of this deconvolution over the loading part of the experiment to retrieve the higher frequency components of the relaxation function is examined. Deconvolution using the transform of the analytical strain function (as applied in the experiment) allows the quality of the high-frequency data to be improved considerably.

Abstract:Considering that research on vibratory stress relief (VSR) is limited in the low frequency ranges at present, the changing pattern of residual stress in the material under the condition of high-frequency-exciting was studied. Using the microcosmic dynamics theory, the relationship among particles inside the structural part was considered as a multiple-degree-of-freedom damping system, and the eliminating course of residual stress was analyzed when the part suffered from high-frequency resonance. Comparing the mode of the specimen at the higher frequency with the mode at the lower frequency, the effect of stress homogenization at the higher-frequency-exciting was presented. The feasibility of high frequency VSR was studied by the means of experimental methods, and the results of relieving and homogenizing residual stress were given under various exciting frequencies. The final results showed that high frequency VSR had good effects in relieving and homogenizing residual stress.

Abstract:Stress relaxation and damped oscillation of viscoelastic soft materials are characterized with memory effect which is very difficult to describe with the classical integer-order derivative equation models. This study introduced novel relaxation-oscillation models for soft materials by using positive fractional derivative and fractal derivative and investigated their properties against the corresponding fractional derivative model through analytic and numerical solutions. In the relaxation process, the stretched exponential stress relaxation of the fractal derivative model is found to decay fastest, while the slowest decay is with the positive fractional derivative model. In the oscillation process, the fractional and the positive fractional derivative models are observed frequency-dependent dissipative oscillation. We also found that the fractional derivative model is more dissipative than the positive fractional derivative one.

Abstract:The study aimed to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the cervical spine and determine the effect of the material properties of the cervical spinal components on it. A finite element model of the head-cervical spine was developed based on CT scan data, and the first six orders of modes (e.g. flexion-extension, lateral bending, and vertical, etc.) were verified by experimental and simulation studies. The material sensitivity study was conducted by varying elasticity modulus of cervical hard tissues (cortical bone, cancellous bone, endplates, and posterior elements) and soft tissues (intervertebral disc and ligaments). The results showed that increasing the elastic modulus of ligaments by 4 times increased the natural frequency by 77%, while increasing that of cancellous bone by 4 times only increased the natural frequency by 6%. In the axial mode, the cervical spine had not only axial deformation but also anterior-posterior deformation, with the largest deformation located at the intervertebral disc C6-C7. Decreasing the elastic modulus of a component in soft tissues by 80% increased modal displacement by up to 62%. The material properties of the intervertebral discs and ligaments had opposite effects on the modal displacement and deformation of the cervical spine. Low cervical discs were more susceptible to injury in a vertical vibration environment. Cervical spine dynamics were more sensitive to soft tissue material properties than to hard tissue material properties. Disc degeneration could reduce the range of vibratory motion of the cervical spine, thereby reducing the ability of the cervical spine to cushion head impacts.

Abstract:The energy dissipation of a cohesive soil is obtained by the Fourier transformation of stress relaxation test data. Energy dissipation is expressed in terms of the loss tangent. The soil response is nonlinear. Because of the difficulty in obtaining a mathematical expression to fit the relaxation data adequately over the entire time scale of interest, an approximate method of evaluating the transform is used. The relaxation response functions are approximated by straight line segments to form a piecewise continuous relation. By using a large number of straight line segments, the error between the actual and approximate transformation can be made negligible. The segment slopes with corresponding values of time are used in a digital computer program to evaluate the transform. The results clearly indicate a decrease of loss tangent with increased applied strain level. For constant strain level, the variation of loss tangent as a function of moisture content is not clearly defined. The loss tangent vs. logarithm of time relation gives a characteristic single peak bell-shaped distribution for each strain level.

Abstract:The present study defines several conditions under which stress relaxation tests can be performed and investigates the viscoelastic behaviour of trabecular bone in compression through a series of stress relaxation tests at three strain levels and in three loading directions of each cubic specimen. A viscoelastic model is proposed to characterize the behaviour of trabecular bone and a spectrum of relaxation times is determined. Trabecular bone from the femoral head is non-linearly viscoelastic and displays anisotropic behaviour, which cannot be more symmetric elastically than orthotropic.

Abstract:The human neck is a unique mechanical structure, highly flexible but fatigue prone. The rising prevalence of neck pain and chronic injuries has been attributed to increasing exposure to fatigue loading in activities such as prolonged sedentary work and overuse of electronic devices. However, a causal relationship between fatigue and musculoskeletal mechanical changes remains elusive. This work aimed to establish this relationship through a unique experiment design, inspired by a cantilever beam mechanical model of the neck, and an orchestrated deployment of advanced motion-force measurement technologies including dynamic stereo-radiographic imaging. As a group of 24 subjects performed sustained-till-exhaustion neck exertions in varied positions-neutral, extended, and flexed, their cervical spine musculoskeletal responses were measured. Data verified the occurrence of fatigue and revealed fatigue-induced neck deflection which increased cervical lordosis or kyphosis by 4-5° to 11°, depending on the neck position. This finding and its interpretations render a renewed understanding of muscle fatigue from a more unified motor control perspective as well as profound implications on neck pain and injury prevention.
Frequency analysis of ankle joint quasi-stiffness during quiet unperturbed standing in Chiari Malformation

Abstract:Chiari Malformation (Chiari) is a congenital condition occurring from an inferior herniation of the cerebellar tonsils into the foramen magnum. Given the role of the cerebellum in postural control, it is reasonable to expect joint motion to be affected in this patient population. In fact, joint stiffness is a common self-reported symptom of Chiari, however it has never been assessed in these individuals. This study aimed to examine if ankle joint quasi-stiffness is correlated with Chiari severity. The human body was considered as an inverted oscillating pendulum without damping. A Fast Fourier Transform was used to extract natural frequency from the center of pressure trajectories during upright standing. Ankle joint quasi-stiffness was then calculated using the relationship between natural frequency and moment of inertia. Twelve Chiari participants (Chiari), six with decompression surgery (Chiari-D) and six without (Chiari-ND), and eight control individuals (Control) participated. Participants completed three, 30-second quiet standing trials on a force plate, focused on a target three meters in front of them. Chiari, regardless of surgery, had significantly lower quasi-stiffness than controls (Chiari-D vs. Control p = 0.0011, Chiari-ND vs. Control, p < 0.001). The proposed method is advantageous as it incorporates the entire center of pressure signal, minimizes error from instantaneous muscular dynamics, and does not require motion capture.
Spectral approaches to stress relaxation in epithelial monolayers

Abstract:We investigate the viscoelastic relaxation to equilibrium of a disordered planar epithelium described using the cell vertex model. In its standard form, the model is formulated as coupled evolution equations for the locations of vertices of confluent polygonal cells. Exploiting the model's gradient-flow structure, we use singular-value decomposition to project modes of deformation of vertices onto modes of deformation of cells. We show how eigenmodes of discrete Laplacian operators (specified by constitutive assumptions related to dissipation and mechanical energy) provide a spatial basis for evolving fields, and demonstrate how the operators can incorporate approximations of conventional spatial derivatives. We relate the spectrum of relaxation times to the eigenvalues of the Laplacians, modified by corrections that account for the fact that the cell network (and therefore the Laplacians) evolve during relaxation to an equilibrium prestressed state, providing the monolayer with geometric stiffness. While dilational modes of the Laplacians capture rapid relaxation in some circumstances, showing diffusive dynamics, geometric stiffness is typically a dominant source of monolayer rigidity, as we illustrate for monolayers exposed to unsteady stretching deformations.

Abstract:The International Journal of Artificial Organs, Ahead of Print. Musculoskeletal diseases are often related with postural changes in the neck region that can be caused by prolonged cervical flexion. This is one of the contributing factors. When determining the prevalence, causes, and related risks of neck discomfort, having a solid understanding of the biomechanics of the cervical spine (C1–C7) is absolutely necessary. The objective of this study is to make predictions regarding the intervertebral disc (IVD) stress values across C2–C7 IVD, the ligament stress, and the variation at 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, and 60° of cervical neck angle using finite element analysis (FEA). In order to evaluate the mechanical properties of the cervical spine (particularly, C2–C7), this investigation makes use of computed tomography (CT) scans to develop a three-dimensional FEA model of the cervical spine. A preload of 50 N compression force was applied at the apex of the C2 vertebra, and all degrees of freedom below the C7 level were constrained. The primary objective of this investigation is to assess the distribution of von Mises stress within the IVDs and ligaments spanning C2–C7 at various flexion angles: 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, and 60°, utilizing FEA. The outcomes derived from this analysis were subsequently compared to previously published experimental and FEA data to validate the model's ability to replicate the physiological motion of the cervical spine across different flexion angles.

Abstract:The cervical spine experiences shear forces during everyday activities and injurious events yet there is a paucity of biomechanical data characterizing the cervical spine under shear loading. This study aimed to (1) characterize load transmission paths and kinematics of the subaxial cervical spine under shear loading, and (2) assess a contemporary finite element cervical spine model using this data. Subaxial functional spinal units (FSUs) were subjected to anterior, posterior, and lateral shear forces (200 N) applied with and without superimposed axial compression preload (200 N) while monitoring spine kinematics. Load transmission paths were identified using strain gauges on the anterior vertebral body and lateral masses and a disc pressure sensor. Experimental conditions were simulated with cervical spine finite element model FSUs (GHBMC M50 version 5.0). The mean kinematics, vertebral strains, and disc pressures were compared to experimental results. The shear force-displacement response typically demonstrated a toe region followed by a linear response, with higher stiffness in anterior shear relative to lateral and posterior shear. Compressive axial preload decreased posterior and lateral shear stiffness and increased initial anterior shear stiffness. Load transmission patterns and kinematics suggest the facet joints play a key role in limiting anterior shear while the disc governs motion in posterior shear. The main cervical spine shear responses and trends are faithfully predicted by the GHBMC cervical spine model. These basic cervical spine biomechanics and the computational model can provide insight into mechanisms for facet dislocation in high severity impacts, and tissue distraction in low severity impacts.
Stress relaxation behavior of the transition zone in the intervertebral disc

Abstract:The stress relaxation of the TZ region, located at the interface of the Annulus Fibrosus (AF) and Nucleus Pulposus (NP) of the disc, and how its stress is relaxed compared to the adjacent regions is unknown. The current study aimed to identify the TZ stress relaxation properties under different strain magnitudes (0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 mm/mm) and compared the TZ stress relaxation characteristics to the NP and inner AF (IAF) regions at a specific strain magnitude (0.6 mm/mm). The results of the current study revealed that the TZ region exhibited different stress relaxation properties under various strain magnitudes with significantly higher initial (p < 0.008) and reduced stresses (marginally; p = 0.06) at higher strains. Our experimental stress relaxation data revealed a significantly higher equilibrium stress for the IAF compared to the TZ and NP regions (p < 0.001) but not between the TZ and NP regions (p = 0.7). We found that NP radial stress relaxed significantly faster (p < 0.04) than the TZ and NP. Additionally, the current study proposed a simple mathematical model and identified that, consistent with experimental data, the overall effect of region on both the level of decayed stress and the rate at which stress is relaxed was significant (p < 0.006). The current study found a similar stress relaxation characteristic between the NP and TZ regions, while IAF exhibited different stress relaxation properties. It is possible that this mismatch in stress relaxation acts as a shape transformation mechanism triggered by viscoelastic behavior. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Our understanding of the biomechanical properties of the transition zone (TZ) in the IVD, a region at the interface of the Nucleus Pulposus (NP) and Annulus Fibrosus (AF), is sparse. Unfortunately, there are no current studies that investigate the TZ stress relaxation properties and how stress is relaxed in the TZ compared to the adjacent regions. For the first time, the current study characterized the stress relaxation properties of the TZ and described how the TZ stress is relaxed compared to its adjacent regions.
Relationship between the flexion relaxation phenomenon and kinematics of the multi-segmental spine in nonspecific chronic low back pain patients

Abstract:The flexion relaxation phenomenon (FRP) is characterized by the reduction of paraspinal muscle activity at maximum trunk flexion. FRP is reported to be altered (persistence of spinal muscle activity) in more than half of nonspecific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP) patients. Little is known about how the multi-segmental spine affects FRP. The aim of this observational study was to investigate the relationship between FRP and kinematic parameters of the multi-segmental spine in NSCLBP patients. Forty NSCLBP patients and thirty-five asymptomatic participants performed a standing maximal trunk flexion task. Surface electromyography was recorded along the erector spinae longissimus. The kinematics of the spine were assessed using a 3D motion analysis system. The investigated spinal segments were upper thoracic, lower thoracic, thoracolumbar, upper lumbar, lower lumbar, and lumbopelvic. Upper lumbar ROM, anterior sagittal inclination of the upper lumbar relative to the lower lumbar in the upright position, and ROM of the upper lumbar relative to the lower lumbar during full trunk flexion were significantly correlated with the flexion relaxation ratio (Rho 0.42 to 0.58, p < 0.006). The relative position and movement of the upper lumbar segment seem to play an important role in the presence or absence of FRP in NSCLBP patients.

Viscoelastic properties of passive skeletal muscle in compression-cyclic behaviour

Abstract:Skeletal muscle relaxation behaviour in compression has been previously reported, but the anisotropic behaviour at higher loading rates remains poorly understood. In this paper, uniaxial unconfined cyclic compression tests were performed on fresh porcine muscle samples at various fibre orientations to determine muscle viscoelastic behaviour. Mean compression level of 25% was applied and cycles of 2% and 10% amplitude were performed at 0.2-80Hz. Under cycles of low frequency and amplitude, linear viscoelastic cyclic relaxation was observed. Fibre/cross-fibre results were qualitatively similar, but the cross-fibre direction was stiffer (ratio of 1.2). In higher amplitude tests nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour with a frequency dependent increase in the stress cycles amplitude was found (factor of 4.1 from 0.2 to 80Hz). The predictive capability of an anisotropic quasi-linear viscoelastic model previously fitted to stress-relaxation data from similar tissue samples was investigated. Good qualitative results were obtained for low amplitude cycles but differences were observed in the stress cycle amplitudes (errors of 7.5% and 31.8%, respectively, in the fibre/cross-fibre directions). At higher amplitudes significant qualitative and quantitative differences were evident. A nonlinear model formulation was therefore developed which provided a good fit and predictions to high amplitude low frequency cyclic tests performed in the fibre/cross-fibre directions. However, this model gave a poorer fit to high frequency cyclic tests and to relaxation tests. Neither model adequately predicts the stiffness increase observed at frequencies above 5Hz. Together with data previously presented, the experimental data presented here provide a unique dataset for validation of future constitutive models for skeletal muscle in compression.
The effects of viscoelasticity on residual strain in aortic soft tissues

Abstract:Residual stress is thought to play a critical role in modulating stress distributions in soft biological tissues and in maintaining the mechanobiological stress environment of cells. Residual stresses in arteries and other tissues are classically assessed through opening angle experiments, which demonstrate the continuous release of residual stresses over hours. These results are then assessed through nonlinear biomechanical models to provide estimates of the residual stresses in the intact state. Although well studied, these analyses typically focus on hyperelastic material models despite significant evidence of viscoelastic phenomena over both short and long timescales. In this work, we extended the state-of-the-art structural tensor model for arterial tissues from Holzapfel and Ogden for fractional viscoelasticity. Models were tuned to capture consistent levels of hysteresis observed in biaxial experiments, while also minimizing the fractional viscoelastic weighting and opening angles to correctly capture opening angle dynamics. Results suggest that a substantial portion of the human abdominal aorta is viscoelastic, but exhibits a low fractional order (i.e. more elastically). Additionally, a significantly larger opening angle in the fully unloaded state is necessary to produce comparable hysteresis in biaxial testing. As a consequence, conventional estimates of residual stress using hyperelastic approaches over-estimate their viscoelastic counterparts by a factor of 2. Thus, a viscoelastic approach, such as the one illustrated in this study, in combination with an additional source of rate-controlled viscoelastic data is necessary to accurately analyze the residual stress distribution in soft biological tissues. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Residual stress plays a crucial role in achieving a homeostatic stress environment in soft biological tissues. However, the analysis of residual stress typically focuses on hyperelastic material models despite evidence of viscoelastic behavior. This work is the first attempt at analyzing the effects of viscoelasticity on residual stress. The application of viscoelasticity was crucial for producing realistic opening dynamics in arteries. The overall residual stresses were estimated to be 50% less than those from using hyperelastic material models, while the opening angles were projected to be 25% more than those measured after 16 hours, suggesting underestimated residual strain. This study highlights the importance viscoelasticity in the analysis of residual stress even in weakly dissipative materials like the human aorta.
Analysis of the physiological load on lumbar vertebrae in patients with osteoporosis: a finite-element study

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the difference in physiological loading on the spine in three different motions (flexion–extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation) between osteoporotic and normal spines, using finite element modelling. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model centered on the lumbar spine was constructed. We applied two different material properties of osteoporotic and normal spines. For the FE analysis, three loading conditions (flexion–extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation) were applied. The von Mises stress was higher on the nucleus pulposus at all vertebral levels in all movements, in the osteoporosis group than in the normal group. On the annulus fibrosus, the von Mises stress increased at the level of L3–L4, L4–L5, and L5–S in the flexion–extension group and at L4–L5 and L5–S levels in the lateral bending group. The values of two motions, flexion–extension and lateral bending, increased in the L4 and L5 cortical bones. In axial rotation, the von Mises stress increased at the level of L5 of cortical bone. Additionally, the von Mises stress increased in the lower endplate of L5–S and L4–L5 in all movements, especially lateral bending. Even in the group with no increase, there was a part that received increased von Mises stress locally for each element in the three-dimensional reconstructed view of the pressure distribution in color. The von Mises stress on the lumbar region in the three loading conditions, was greater in most components of osteoporotic vertebrae than in normal vertebrae and the value was highest in the nucleus pulposus. Considering the increase in the measured von Mises stress and the local increase in the pressure distribution, we believe that these results can contribute to explaining discogenic pain and degeneration.

Abstract:The lumbar region is a frequent site of spinal disorders, including low-back pain, and of spinal trauma. Clinical studies have established that abnormal intervertebral motions occur in some patients who have low-back pain. A knowledge of normal spinal movements, with all of the inherent complexities, is needed as a baseline. The present study documents the complete three-dimensional elastic physical properties of each lumbar intervertebral level from the level between the first and second lumbar vertebrae through the level between the fifth lumbar and first sacral vertebrae. Nine whole fresh-frozen human cadaveric lumbar-spine specimens were used. Pure moments of flexion-extension, bilateral axial torque, and bilateral lateral bending were applied, and three-dimensional intervertebral motions were determined with use of stereophotogrammetry. The motions were presented in the form of a set of six load-displacement curves, quantitating intervertebral rotations and translations. The curves were found to be non-linear, and the motions were coupled. The ranges of motion were found to compare favorably with reported values from in vivo studies.

Shear mechanical properties of human lumbar annulus fibrosus

Abstract:Function, failure, and remodeling of the intervertebral disc are all related to the stress and strain fields in the tissue and may be calculated by finite element models with accurate material properties, realistic geometry, and appropriate boundary conditions. There is no comprehensive study in the literature investigating the shear material properties of the annulus fibrosus. This study obtained shear material properties of the annulus fibrosus and tested the hypothesis that these properties are affected by the amplitude and frequency of shearing, applied compressive stress, and degenerative state of the tissue. Cylindrical specimens with an axial orientation from seven nondegenerated and six degenerated discs were tested in torsional shear under dynamic and static conditions. Frequency sweep experiments over a physiological range of frequencies (0.1-100 rad/sec) at a shear strain amplitude of 0.05 rad were performed under three different axial compressive stresses (17.5, 25, and 35 kPa). At the largest compressive stress, shear strain sweep experiments (strain amplitude range: 0.005-0.15 rad at a frequency of 5 rad/sec) and transient stress-relaxation tests (shear strain range: 0.02-0.15 rad) were performed. The annulus fibrosus material was less stiff and more dissipative at larger shear strain amplitudes, stiffer at higher frequencies of oscillation, and stiffer and less dissipative at larger axial compressive stresses. The dynamic shear modulus, /G*/, had values ranging from 100 to 400 kPa, depending on the experimental condition and degenerative level. The shear behavior was also predominantly elastic, with values for the tangent of the phase angle (tandelta) ranging from 0.1 to 0.7. The annulus material also became stiffer and more dissipative with degenerative grade; however, this was not statistically significant. The results indicated that nonlinearities, compression/shear coupling, intrinsic viscoelasticity, and, to a lesser degree, degeneration all affect the shear material behavior of the annulus fibrosus, with important implications for load-carriage mechanisms in the intervertebral disc. These material complexities should be considered when choosing material constants for finite element models.

Abstract:In this study, a biphasic theory is applied to investigate the viscoelastic behaviors of vocal fold lamina propria during stress relaxation. The vocal fold lamina propria tissue is described as a biphasic material composed of a solid phase and an interstitial fluid phase. The biphasic theory reveals the interaction between the solid and the fluid. For the one-dimensional case, the analytical solutions of solid displacement, fluid velocity, and stress are derived. The biphasic theory predicts the stress relaxation of the vocal fold lamina propria. The quasilinear viscoelastic model as well as its higher-order elastic parameters can be derived from this biphasic theory. Furthermore, the fluid is found to support the majority of the stress at the early stage of stress relaxation; however, when the time becomes sufficiently large, the solid eventually bears all the stress. The early fluid stress support is much higher than the eventual solid support and may be important for understanding the effects of dehydration on tissue damage. By considering the solid-fluid structure of the vocal fold lamina propria, the biphasic theory allows for a more physical theory of tissue viscoelasticity than a single phase solid description and may provide a valuable physical mechanism for the observed vocal fold rheologic behaviors.
