Abstract:Using extended coherent states, an analytically exact study has been carried out for the quantum Rabi model with two equivalent qubits. Compact transcendental functions of one variable have been derived leading to exact solutions. The energy spectrum is clearly identified and analyzed. Also obtained analytically are the necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of isolated exceptional solutions, which are not doubly degenerate as in the one-qubit quantum Rabi model.

Abstract:Using extended coherent states, an analytical exact study has been carried out for the quantum Rabi model (QRM) with two arbitrary qubits in a very concise way. The $G$-functions with $2 \times 2$ determinants are generally derived. For the same coupling constants, the simplest $G$-function, resembling that in the one-qubit QRM, can be obtained. Zeros of the $G$-function yield the whole regular spectrum. The exceptional eigenvalues, which do not belong to the zeros of the $G$ function, are obtained in the closed form. The Dark states in the case of the same coupling can be detected clearly in a continued-fraction technique. The present concise solution is conceptually clear and practically feasible to the general two-qubit QRM and therefore has many applications.

Abstract:A variational approach is presented for calculating the ground-state energy of two-and three-dimensional polarons in symmetric quantum dots with arbitrary electron-phonon coupling constants. It is found that the polaronic energy correction increases with the decrease in size of the quantum dot and is much more pronounced with decreasing dimensionality. Furthermore, the relative polaronic enhancement is found to be insensitive to the variation of the dimensionality and the coupling constant at weak coupling, however, as the coupling constant increases, it comes to depend on not only the dimensionality, but the coupling constant as well. An Effective Approach for Two-Dimensional Polarons in an Asymmetric Quantum Dot

Abstract:Within the framework of Feynman-Haken path integral theory, we calculate the groundstate energy of two-dimensional polarons in asymmetric quantum dots for arbitrary electron-phonon coupling constants. From a general three-dimensional Hamiltonian, some interesting problems, such as polarons in quasi-one-dimensional quantum wires and quasi-zero-dimensional asymmetric or symmetric quantum dots can be easily discussed only by taking different limit in the whole coupling regime. After the numerical calculation, we find that the relative polaronic correction increases monotonically with the decrease of effective dot size, and it becomes more pronounced with increasing dimension and asymmetry. Moreover, despite the insensitivity of relative polaronic enhancement to the variation of coupling constant at weak coupling, the correction is related to the coupling constant as the latter becomes larger.

Abstract:By using extended bosonic coherent states, a technique to solve the Dicke model exactly is proposed in the numerical sense. The accessible system size is two orders of magnitude higher than that reported in the literature. Finite-size scaling for several observables, such as the ground-state energy, Berry phase, and concurrence, is analyzed. A scaling exponent for ground-state energy is found. An existing discrepancy in the scaling exponent of the concurrence is reconciled.

Abstract:The exact electron-electron interaction energies in quantum dots (QDs) with parabolic potentials have been calculated and studied. On the basis of calculation results, two-electron spectra in QDs are shown. It is found that the spectra dramatically change with variation of the size and field. The spin-singlet-spin-triplet oscillations with the magnetic field are clearly shown for two-electron ground states in QDs. The variations of spectra with a field are quite different for different dot-sizes, presenting the magnetic “fingerprint” of QDs. These phenomena are induced by the electron-electron interactions in QDs.

Abstract:The discrete states resulting from three-dimensional confinement in semiconductor quantum dots retain much of the character of their bulk-band origins, for example their angular momentum and effective mass. In addition they have many features of discrete atomic-like single particle states. Strong optical field interactions and reasonable dephasing rates make this system attractive for basic quantum optics experiments, as well as applications in quantum information sciences. However, semiconductor quantum dots have large inhomogeneous state broadens due to variations in size and shape. In addition, epitaxial semiconductor quantum dots, one of the classes in common use, rarely have ideal symmetry. Here we show how an optical technique can be used to fine-tune the transition energies of semiconductor quantum dots states and if desired restore targeted symmetry elements. This approach can be applied to establish degeneracies in biexciton-exciton decays to form discrete entangled photon pairs or to establish indistinguishability between different quantum dots.

Abstract:On the basis of the generalized invariant formulation, the invariant-related unitary transformation method is used to study the evolution of the quantum Dirac field in a time-dependent spatially homogeneous electric field. We solve the functional Schr?dinger equation for the Dirac field and obtain the exact solutions and corresponding total phase. On the basis of calculated results, one- and two-electron spectra in QDs are revealed. It is found that the spectra are dramatically changed with the variation of the size and field. The even-parity-odd-parity and spin-singlet-spin-triplet oscillations with magnetic field are clearly shown for one- and two-electron ground states in QDs. The variations of the spectra with field are quite different for different dot sizes, and represent magnetic 'fingerprints' of the QDs. These phenomena are induced by the negative-ion-electron and electron-electron interactions in QDs.

Abstract:We review the recent progress in theory and experiments with lateral triple quantum dots with controlled electron numbers down to one electron in each dot. The theory covers electronic and spin properties as a function of topology, number of electrons, gate voltage and external magnetic field. The orbital Hund's rules and Nagaoka ferromagnetism, magnetic frustration and chirality, interplay of quantum interference and electron-electron interactions and geometrical phases are described and related to charging and transport spectroscopy. Fabrication techniques and recent experiments are covered, as well as potential applications of triple quantum-dot molecule in coherent control, spin manipulation and quantum computation.

Abstract:The exact spectra of two electrons confined by two-dimensional and three-dimensional quantum dots (2D and 3D QD's) with parabolic potentials are obtained. Using the present results, the size and shape effects of QD's on the spectra are revealed. It is found that the spectra are dramatically changed with the variation of the dot size, and then the crossover of two levels can appear. The variation of spectra with size and the positions of crossover points are quite different between 2D and 3D QD's. It is well explained based on the Study of electron-electron interaction energies in 2D and 3D QD's. The size and shape effects predict a possibility to observe phenomena related to electron-electron interactions in QD's.

Abstract:In the presence of spin-orbit coupling, quantum models for semiconductor materials are generally not exactly solvable. As a result, understanding of the strong spin-orbit coupling effects in these systems remains poor. Here we develop an analytical method to solve the one-dimensional hard-wall quantum dot problem in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field, which allows us to obtain exact eigenenergies and eigenstates of a single electron. With the help of the exact solution, we demonstrate some unique effects from the strong spin-orbit coupling in a semiconductor quantum dot, in particular the anisotropy of the electron g-factor and its tunability.

Abstract:: Within the framework of the second-order Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory, we investigate the effects of the interaction of the electron and longitudinal-optical phonons in two-dimensional semiconductive quantum dots with respect to a general potential. We propose a simple expression for the ground state energy, and compare it with those obtained by Landau-Pekar strong coupling theory. It is shown both analytically and numerically that the results obtained from the second-order Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory could be better than those from Landau-Pekar strong coupling theory when the coupling constant is sufficiently small. Moreover, some interesting problems, such as polarons in quasi-one-dimensional quantum wires, and quasi-zero-dimensional asymmetric or symmetric quantum dots can be easily discussed only by taking different limits. After the numerical calculations, we find that there exists a simple dimensional scaling and symmetry relation for the ground state polaron energy. Furthermore, we apply our results to some weak-coupling polar semiconductors such as GaAs, CdS. It is shown that the polaronic effects are found to be quiet appreciable if the confinement lengths and smaller than a few nanometers.

Abstract:We generalize the known solution of the Schrödinger equation, describing a particle confined to a triangular area, for a triangular graphene quantum dot with armchair-type boundaries. The quantization conditions, wave functions, and the eigenenergies are determined analytically. As an application, we calculate the corrections to the quantum dot’s energy levels due to distortions of the carbon-carbon bonds at the edges of the quantum dot.

Abstract:We study shot noise in tunneling current through a double quantum dot connected to two electric leads. We derive two master equations in the occupation-state basis and the eigenstate basis to describe the electron dynamics. The approach based on the occupation-state basis, despite being widely used in many previous studies, is valid only when the interdot coupling strength is much smaller than the energy difference between the two dots. In contrast, the calculations using the eigenstate basis are valid for an arbitrary interdot coupling. Using realistic model parameters, we demonstrate that the predicted currents and shot-noise properties from the two approaches are significantly different when the interdot coupling is not small. Furthermore, properties of the shot noise predicted using the eigenstate basis successfully reproduce qualitative features found in a recent experiment.

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are one of the leading candidates for realizable qubits, as well as for many other advances in quantum computing and quantum communication. The spatial overlapping of wavefunctions describing each single electron in these nanoscale devices results in tunable spatial entanglement. In this article, we explore the case of two electrons in two-dimensional double quantum dot systems. We compute the two-particle wavefunction through a variational method combined with Hermite finite elements and study the spatial entanglement of electrons. We show that symmetry in the geometry of the double quantum dots plays a role in obtaining optimal entanglement, while a broken symmetry can lead to additional resonances in entanglement that are associated with the crossings of states. We also show that one can finely tune the level of spatial entanglement by altering the geometry of the quantum dots or by applying external fields, which corresponds to an “entanglement spectroscopy.” Finally, we study how impurities in the potential profile of the QDs affect the level of entanglement.

Double Quantum Dots in Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:We study the two-electron eigenspectrum of a carbon-nanotube double quantum dot with spin-orbit coupling. Exact calculation are combined with a simple model to provide an intuitive and accurate description of single-particle and interaction effects. For symmetric dots and weak magnetic fields, the two-electron ground state is antisymmetric in the spin-valley degree of freedom and is not a pure spin-singlet state. When double occupation of one dot is favored by increasing the detuning between the dots, the Coulomb interaction causes strong correlation effects realized by higher orbital-level mixing. Changes in the double-dot configuration affect the relative strength of the electron-electron interactions and can lead to different ground state transitions. In particular, they can favor a ferromagnetic ground state both in spin and valley degrees of freedom. The strong suppression of the energy gap can cause the disappearance of the Pauli blockade in transport experiments and thereby can also limit the stability of spin-qubits in quantum information proposals. Our analysis is generalized to an array of coupled dots which is expected to exhibit rich many-body behavior.

Abstract:We obtain the exact energy spectrum of nonuniform mass particles for a collection of Hamiltonians in a three-dimensional approach to a quantum dot. By considering a set of generalized Schrödinger equations with different orderings between the particle's momentum and mass, the energy bound-states are calculated analytically for hard boundary conditions. The present results are of interest in atomic physics and quantum dot theory.
