Abstract:Recently, colloidal nanocrystals attract much attention due to their importance in fundamental research on zero-dimensional structures and great potential in a variety of practical applications. The aim of this research is to investigate fundamental properties of a variety of colloidal nanostructures and explore new interesting phenomena in these colloidal nanostructures. By means of magneto-optical experimental techniques, g-factor, spin dynamics and fine structure of the exciton complex in three types of colloidal nanostructures, including core/shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals, Thoil-capped CdTe NCs and CdSe-based colloidal platelets, were characterized at cryogenic temperatures and in high magnetic fields. A long spin relaxation time was observed in thick-shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals and mechanisms responsible for different behaviours of exciton spin dynamics observed in thick-shell CdSe/CdS NCs and CdTe NCs were discussed. Additionally, it was found that the Forster resonant energy transfer in ensembles of CdTe colloidal NCs could be enhanced by magnetic field and temperature. Finally, we characterized two types of CdSe-based colloidal platelets which show much smaller bright-dark splitting energy of excitons compared with that in CdSe NCs with similar diameter. This can be explained by the strong decrease of the electron-hole exchange interaction resulting from the reduction of the electron-hole wavefunction overlap in colloidal platelet structures.

Abstract:We demonstrate a Cs FADOF (Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter) with a single transmission peak resonant with the 6S(1/2), F = 4 → 7P(3/2), F' = 3, 4, 5 transition at 455 nm. The filter achieves a single peak transmission of 86%. With the technique of saturated absorption spectra, we obtain the bandwidth of the single peak, which is 1.5 GHz. While most of other FADOFs operate at frequencies far from absorption, the filter we have realized can provide light exactly resonant with atomic transitions with a high transmission. We also find that, at a particular temperature, we can achieve a single transmission peak rather than many peaks far from absorption by changing the strength of magnetic field. This technique can also be applied to other alkali atoms.

Abstract:A 459 nm Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) working at the side wings of the cesium 6S1∕2 → 7P1∕2 transition with weak oscillator strength is achieved. The transmittance of the higher side wing reaches 98% at a temperature of 179°C and magnetic field above 323 G. The experimental results coincide with the theoretical predictions in 1982 and 1995, which were not realized in experiments for over three decades. Due to its high transmittance, high accuracy, and narrow linewidth, the 459 nm FADOF can be applied in underwater optical communications, the building of active optical clocks, and laser frequency stabilization in active optical clocks.

Abstract:As an ultra-narrow bandwidth optical filter with unique character of high efficiency, Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) has been focused on by both international and domestic researchers in recent years. In this thesis the theoretical and experimental studies on Cs 852 nm FADOF were done on the base of reviewing the domestic and international development. A qualitative analysis on the magnetic field and temperature of the two main factors was given and the best working conditions were obtained. Hereby experiment was planned and at last a small-scale device was made.

Abstract:We demonstrate a Cs excited state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (ESFADOF) operating at 728 nm using a novel pump method, by which the pump beam and the probe beam in the ESFADOF realized here have no a common energy level. Using this method, the ESFADOF achieves a transmission of 2.39% with a bandwidth of 22.52 MHz, which can be applied to both laser frequency stabilization and future four-level active optical clocks. Under the 455 nm laser pump, in addition to 52D5/2, other states such as 72S1/2, 72P3/2, 62P3/2, 62P1/2 and 52D3/2 have also been populated effectively. Meanwhile, multiple wavelength filters exploiting atomic transitions to these states can be realized.

Abstract:Several characteristics of the FADOF at 459 nm of cesium atoms were calculated. The results show that the Cs FADOF has proximately stable transmission, bandwidth and linear adjustable frequency within a certain range of cell temperature and magnetic field strength.

Abstract:We have investigated a cesium Faraday filter at 852nm in relatively weak and strong magnetic fields, theoretically and experimentally, With a cesium cell of 0.02m length in an axial magnetic field of 0.06T, the line-centre operation has been achieved. The calculated peak transmission reached 99% with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth of only 3.9 GHz. The measured FWHM bandwidth of the filter is 3.29 GHz, which is in general agreement with the theoretical result.

Abstract:A narrow linewidth Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) with reflection configuration is achieved for the first time based on the cesium (Cs) ground state 6S1/2 to the excited state 6P3/2 transition at 852 nm. Compared with the conventional FADOF with transmission configuration, reflection-type FADOF can greatly improve the transmittance of optical filter under the same experimental parameters, because it allows signal light to go and return through the atomic vapor cell. In our experiment, peak transmittance at Cs 6S1/2 F = 4–6P3/2 transition is 81% for the reflection-type FADOF, and while 54% for the transmission-type FADOF when the temperature of Cs vapor cell and the axial magnetic field are 60 °C and 19 G. The idea of this reflection-type FADOF design has the potential to be applied to the FADOF operating between two excited states to obtain higher transmittance.

Abstract:We realize a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) operating on the 88 Sr (5s 2 ) 1 S 0 -(5s5p) 1 P 1 transition, utilizing a strontium hollow cathode lamp (HCL). At the magnetic field strength of 1460 G and the HCL discharge current of 22 mA, a single transmission peak with a maximum transmission of 28.8% is obtained. The dependence of transmission on magnetic field and HCL discharge current is qualitatively studied. This demonstration will be used to build a Faraday laser, which will be applied in the Sr optical clock.

Abstract:A near infrared potassium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter was theoretically studied for the transition, including hyperfine ef fects. In the paper the Zeeman splittings of potassium were calculate d for the given transition, that is, diagonalizing the disturbed matri x, and finding out the Zeeman sublevels position and transition freque ncies. Next we obtain an expression for the bulk polarizability tensor . Finally we acquire the transition coefficient relating to the polari zability tensor. The effect of temperature and magnetic field on prope rties of Faraday optical filter were investigated. The optimum filter operating condition was also obtained. The single peak bandwidth of th e optical filter is about 0.86GHz, equivalent noise band width is 2.4G Hz. The transmission is approximately 94.1 percent under the optimum c ondit ion.

Abstract:We report the newest experimental results of Cs-D2 line 852 nm Faraday optical filters for wireless optical communication system. We measure the transmission spectrum of the Faraday optical filters with different temperature, magnetic field intensity, and with or without buffer gas. The Cs-852nm Faraday optical filters is based on atomic vapor cell, with the increase of magnetic field strength and the filling of buffer gas at a certain pressure. The bandwidth, transmittance and line shape of the transmission spectrum are changed obviously. The results can be used for free-space laser communications.

Abstract:In this paper the properties of an excited-state potassium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter in potassium vapor with a pump wavelength of 769.90 nm (i.e. 4S1/2-->4P1/2 transition) and a signal wavelength of 532 nm (i.e. 4P1/2-->8S1/2 transition) are calculated and discussed. The filter's transmissions versus the laser pump power and the external magnetic-field are obtained. The theoretical results show the transmission characteristics of the filter are relatively insensitive to the laser pump power and magnetic strength. The laser pump powers require range from 0.8 to 6 mW.cm-2. Our model predicts a peak transmission of 50% and an equivalent band-width of 4 GHz for the filter operating on the 4P1/2<--8S1/2 transition in potassium. The optical filter at 532 nm presented in this paper may be used to detect the practical and important frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser.

Abstract:We mainly present the 728 nm laser spectroscopy and Faraday atomic filter of Cs atoms with 650 MHz linewidth and 2.6% transmission based on an electrodeless discharge vapor lamp, compared with Rb 728 nm laser spectroscopy. Accidentally, this remarkably strong Cs 728 nm transition from the 6F(7/2) state to the 5D(5/2) state is only about 2.5 GHz away from the Rb 728 nm transition of the future potential four-level active optical clock, once laser cooled and trapped from the 7S(1/2) state to the 5P(1/2) state, as we proposed previously. A Faraday atomic filter stabilized 728 nm laser using a Cs electrodeless discharge vapor lamp with a power of 10 mW will provide a frequency reference to evaluate the performance of the potential Rb four-level active optical clock at 728 nm with power less than 1 nW by 2.5 GHz heterodyne measurements.

Abstract:We demonstrate a Faraday laser at Cs-D2 resonance line 852 nm using a Cs Faraday optical filter as frequency-selecting element. In contrast to typical diode laser with high stability of the emission frequency by additional control systems, our Faraday laser offers stable output frequency exactly set by the peak transmission frequency of the Cs 852 nm Faraday optical filter. The system works stably over a range of laser diode (LD) current from 60 to 130 mA and the LD temperature from 14 to 35 $$^{\circ }$$C, as well as the 48-h wavelength fluctuation range of no more than ± 2 p.m. A most probable linewidth of 17 kHz with Lorentz fitting is obtained by beating between two identical laser systems. The wavelength of our system is stabilized within transmission frequency region of 852 nm Faraday optical filter, and the peak of the transmission is corresponding to Cs atomic Doppler broadened line at the cell temperature of 41 $$^{\circ }$$C and the magnetic field of 330 G, making it suitable for laser-pumped Cs gas-cell and atomic beam frequency standard, etc. Moreover, this scheme is firstly used on Cs atom, opening new doors in research of Faraday laser and its applications.

Abstract:The characteristics of the 852 nm cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter with Ar-filled cesium cell under different signal powers are investigated. The transmittance spectra are measured by changing the input laser power from 0.05 to 10 mW (the irradiance from 12.03 to 2406.88 W/m2) and the buffer gas pressure from 1 to 10 torr. The spectra without the buffer gas are also measured. The results reveal the entirely different variations of the transmittance spectra for the cells with and without the buffer gas. For the cell without the buffer gas, the sidebands of the spectrum get higher and the bandwidth is broadened as the input power increases. However, for the cell with the buffer gas, the sidebands are suppressed and the bandwidth is reduced. A single-peak transmittance spectrum will be formed eventually. These phenomena are remarkable at relatively high pressures of Ar (5 and 10 torr), which may be very suitable for applications such as Faraday laser, optical frequency standard, laser frequency stabilization, and laser locking. The sidebands of the spectrum can also be used to restrict the high input laser power which may cause damage to the system.
An Excited State Voigt Optical Filter at 1.5 Μm

Abstract:An excited state Voigt atomic optical filter working at optical communication wavelength (1.5 μm) is realized. The filter achieves a peak transmittance of 53.5% with a double-peak structure, in which each one has a bandwidth of 600 MHz. Different from the Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter, the magnetic field of the Voigt filter is perpendicular to the propagation direction of the light, which makes permanent magnets in the filter easier to realize and makes the filter better for engineering.

Abstract:An ultranarrow bandwidth sodium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter is studied theoretically and experimentally for the 3P(3/2) <-- 3S(1/2) transition including hyperfine Zeeman effects. With a Na cell of 3cm in length in an axial magnetic field of 316 Gauss, the peak transmission has reached about 38% with a FWHM bandwidth of only 1.5GHz. Theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement for the transition.

Abstract:Large normal material dispersion acts as an obstacle in the generation of visible optical frequency combs (OFCs) in microcavities. The trajectory separation of light propagation aggravates the dispersion unbalance in the visible region. Dispersion engineering devoted to compressing the separation reaches a bottleneck due to manufacturing difficulties. In this article, we demonstrated that the separation of the light trajectory can be used to manipulate the cavity dispersion. In a bilayer concentric spherical microcavity (CSM), the visible anomalous dispersion was achieved numerically by precisely matching the separated trajectory with the appropriate materials. Furthermore, we simulated the generation of an optical soliton in the visible region based on the proposed microcavity. Our work provides a clue for the visible dispersion control, and the proposed BK7/silica CSM will be an interesting platform for the visible OFC generation.

Abstract:The Faraday effect as a function of photon energy for Cd1-xFexTe with xi = 0.01 and 0.04 in the temperature range of 70 to 300K has been measured. The effective interband g factors at the �� and L points of the Brillouin zone as a function of temperature were obtained for the first time. The exchange interaction integral N0 (�� - ��) between Fe2+ ions and free carriers was also determined.

Abstract:The effects of the electromagnetically induced transparency and dispersion of a A-type three-level atomic system are experimentally measured with a vapour cell of Cs atoms. The steep dispersion at low absorption is observed. Thus a small group velocity for the probe beam is inferred from the measured dispersion curve.
