Abstract:To solve the bottleneck problem in design and preparation of the fixture in product development, the architecture for computer aided fixture design system based on the environment of concurrent product development (CE-CAFD) was presented. The integrated development platform for the fixture design was proposed, which includes knowledge base for preliminary design, algorithm base for fixture design and management base for fixture resource, and the information transmission modes between them. The expert system of fixture scheme design based on example reasoning was adopted and the judgement and optimization were conducted by optimized fuzzy method.

Abstract:Fixture design is a complex and intuitive process. An efficient fixture design system is essential to cut costs and reduce product lead time. For networked manufacturing, the fixture design system must contain characteristics of rapid configuration designing, three-dimensional (3D) modelling, a completely standardized elements database, and it should be able to transfer information with various other systems. For the requirement of rapid configuration design, based on the analysis of the contents and characteristics of fixture design, a hybrid CBR/KBR (case-based reasoning/knowledge-based reasoning) fixture design method is proposed, with CBR as its core, KBR as its assistant and CBR as the support of case-adaptation process. Using design information, the designer can obtain a satisfactory subset of possible configuration designs of a fixture from the KBR process. Then the designer, using this subset and other information (via FIXCOD system), can obtain a similar design of the fixture from the retrieving case database, and then finally use the CBR adaptation technique to obtain the satisfied design of fixture. Networked information releasing technology is applied to part design in the computer aided design (CAD) system, and a new 3D modelling method is presented, driven by networked parameters. The data on the web are integrated into the CAD system to realize multithreading data exchange between the web information releasing system and the CAD system, which will make the CAD system obtain data from the web. Then networked 3D modelling will be realized by the driving of parameters from the web, and a proved model based on CATIA is provided. The internet and the use of extensible mark-up language (XML) as a file format provide a means for the transfer of information and knowledge between the various computer aided manufacturing (CAM) systems. The system has been implemented using Java and is based on a three-tier browser/server (B/S) architecture. This ensures the platform independent performance of the system.

Abstract:The separation of CAPP and CAFD often causes conflict and delays for the product development. This paper overcomes these obstacles by describing a developed system that is capable of carrying out setup planning and fixture design concurrently. An intelligent approach for setup planning is introduced. In this approach, the setups are automatic- ally planned based on key factors of machining practice, tolerance requirement, manufacturing cost and fixturing constraints from the feedback of fixture design. Further more, a hybrid RBR and fuzzy evaluation method based automatic fixture design approach is also described. In proposed system, the feedback of fixture design is to ensure that the setup plan for machined part is generated on the basis of feasible fixture plan. An example is presented to illustrate the proposed system.

Abstract:The most important task of fixture design is to locate a workpiece with the acceptable position. This paper presents a general fixture model able to characterize the state of the workpiece which is produced by the fixture locating-scheme. The fixture model is firstly proposed to discompose into the locating principle model and the locating error model. The locating principle model is used to verify the number and layout of the fixture locators/locating points whereas the locating error model formulates the relationship between the variations in the position and orientation of the workpiece and the dimensions/positions of locators. On the other hand, based on the conception of the robust design, the fixture design model is further established to improve the locating quality of the fixture. Finally, by means of some examples, a detailed discussion is made about how the analysis and optimal design of the locating-scheme is carried out.

Abstract:Abstract Jigs and fixtures are indispensable tools in various manufacturing processes. These processes include metal removal, assembly, welding, and inspection processes. Not only do jigs and fixtures facilitate the operations, but also provide quick loading/unloading, proper and consistent supporting and locating of a workpiece. As a result, the workpiece can be manufactured economically in proportion to the volume of production. With the advent of computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing together with an increasing power of both computer hardware and software, computerized fixture design systems become feasible and more sophisticated. The current computerized fixture design systems are developed utilizing several approaches ranging from simple interactive placement of fixture components to sophisticated generative systems. However, one of the common drawbacks of these systems is a lack of process planning integration in the fixture design considerations. As a result, the contradiction between fixture design generated by the computerized fixture design system and a process plan generated by a process planner or by computer aided process planning software always occurs. In other words, the fixture set-ups and workpiece orientation are not congruent to the process plan. This paper serves to discuss a solution to the problem mentioned above. A mathematical model was developed to integrate process planning in fixture design considerations. An optimized fixture design system will be presented and discussed. Examples of tested cases are also presented.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems

Abstract:To deal with features of complex product development, the method of concurrent and collaborative design was presented. Firstly, the framework of concurrent and collaborative design based on system theory was established. Within this framework, product design included time dimension concurrence and space dimension collaboration. Secondly, the expression of concurrent and collaborative model based on constraint network was studied. A general consistency check algorithm was put forward to define the parameter intervals. The method of multidiscipli-nary design optimization was proposed to obtain optimized solution. Finally, a design example was analyzed to show effectiveness of this proposed method.

Abstract:Modular fixture design is a complex process. Computer-aided modular fixture design can help to accumulate the experience and technology of fixture designer. In this paper, the optimal configuration method of hole modular fixture is studied in computer-aided modular fixture design. Firstly, the characteristics of the modular fixture is analyzed, with the detail information needed during the fixture design process given, including the structure information, function information and assembly feature information of the element. Fixture information description model is built to support the database design of the modular fixture and the automatical generation of the modular fixture. An optimized configuration algorithm is studied to generate the modular fixture from the fixture elements to meet the requirements. Finally, an illustration is provided to testify the feasibility the algorithm.

Abstract:Fixture plays an important role in enhancing the weld quality of the sheet metal assembly process. However, the traditional experience-based fixturing scheme and the purely optimal fixturing scheme are often sensitive to location fluctuation of the designed locators. In this paper, the three quality design models of a non-linear programming model, a polynomial response surface methodology (RSM) and a neural network (NN)-enhanced RSM are presented for fixture planning of a sheet metal assembly with resistance spot weld. In the non-linear programming model, both performance and variance are considered in the formulation of objective function. The polynomial RSM is used to fit a feasible response surface by 3k fractional factorial design and analysis of the variance; by inspecting the influence of each design variable, one can gain insight into the existence of multiple design choices and select the optimum design based on more factors. NN can be used to confidently generate additional design points added to the original data set to form the enhanced data set; the NN-enhanced RSM can help to improve the accuracy. An industrial case study of a car door assembly is used to illustrate the feasibility of the presented quality design models. This work provides a basis for improving the quality of the body-in-white assembly process in the design phase.

Abstract:In pursuit of the most competitive advantages in modem dynamic business environment, companies have recognized the importance of the real-time integrated collaboration of the different enterprise application systems. Manufacturing process planning plays a significant role by providing collaborative integration capabilities, from design to manufacturing. This situation is more acute in the tooling production industry, which is characterized by short lead-time and frequent dynamic customer requirements. A framework for concurrent design to manufacturing collaboration has been developed to support the integration of product design with manufacturing process planning. A prototype system based on this framework has been developed and tested in a tooling job shop with satisfactory results. Although the concurrent design to manufacturing collaboration framework has been developed for solving tooling production problems, it is generic and can be effectively applied in other production domains that require the support of collaborative integration.

Abstract:Purpose - Fixture design is a complicated task requiring both intensive knowledge and experience. This paper aims to present a computer-aided fixture design (CAFD) system framework based on design reuse technology.Design/methodology/approach - Fixture design domain ontology is constructed by analyzing fixture design document corpus. A design reuse engine is proposed to realize fixture design knowledge retrieval and fixture model retrieval based on ontology and find fixture design cases similar to fixture design problem, and then use evolutionary methods to modify the retrieved model to meet the design requirements and then generate a new fixture.Findings - The paper finds that the proposed framework is an efficient tool to improve efficiency of fixture design.Practical implications - Fixture design existing experience and cases can be used efficiently reused and to advance new fixture design processes.Originality/value - This paper presents a CAFD system framework capable of carrying out fixture design through full using of the existing fixture design resource and experienced knowledge.
