Abstract:This paper introduces definitions and characteristics of Concurrent Engineering, and on the basis of the demands of Concurrent Engineering for the building design process, the integrated frame for implementing Concurrent Design of construction engineering is constructed, which includes integration contents, functions and general structure partitioned by three domains. The characteristics of applying concurrent design to construction engineering are discussed. Finally, the hierarchical relations between various professional design levels based on shared database are constructed also.

Abstract:Concurrent design (CD) is one important;activity of concurrent engineering. CD focuses on producing an optimum design at a competitive cost by improving its manufacturability without affecting its function and performance. An integrated product concurrent design system is presented in this paper. It consists of integrated product model, an expert system for product manufacturability evaluation and the controller of concurrent design. With the help of controller of concurrent design, each design period can be evaluated based on manufacturing knowledge so that product concurrent design can be implemented from conceptual design to detail design based on the integrated product information model. Products and their design process can be optimized. The information and function integration of product design process can be realized. The time to market and the cost of product can be reduced.

Abstract:With the demand of distributed designers to cooperatively design a single product, these designers need to simultaneously access a common database, which holds the geometric model and other information of the product. But frequently, their design will lead to invalid results. Therefore, it is very important to build a distributed model to coordinate these designers to ensure the consistency of the product. The paper introduces a collaborative model to support this concurrent work. First, the architecture of this system is presented. Then a collaborative design model is described in detail. We analyze two reasons for the conflict and give two collaborative modes to coordinate the design process. These two modes can be used in different environments and can be used in a mixed way. So we can keep the consistency of the common solid model and maintain the maximal freedom of the designers at the same time. Finally, we give some design examples to further illustrate our model

Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems

Abstract:To deal with features of complex product development, the method of concurrent and collaborative design was presented. Firstly, the framework of concurrent and collaborative design based on system theory was established. Within this framework, product design included time dimension concurrence and space dimension collaboration. Secondly, the expression of concurrent and collaborative model based on constraint network was studied. A general consistency check algorithm was put forward to define the parameter intervals. The method of multidiscipli-nary design optimization was proposed to obtain optimized solution. Finally, a design example was analyzed to show effectiveness of this proposed method.

Abstract:The paper proposes a proactive support approach for product conceptual design considering issues related to manufacturing systems. A set of manufacturing system analytical models has been developed to estimate manufacturing cycle time for product sub-assembly. A concurrent analysis method is provided to calculate the manufacturing cost based on predicted cycle time and to analyze product quality. An overall life-cycle performance index of a design solution is evaluated to help designers make informed decisions in selecting the optimal alternative in terms of manufacturing cycle time, cost and quality for a given manufacturing system.

Abstract:Product conceptual design can be carried out by means of case based reasoning. Product conceptual design can be evaluated based on manufacturing knowledge and modified according to the evaluation result, so optimum resolution can be obtained. Feature modeling of product can be carried out based on user defined feature. Product structure can be dealt with parameter. Parametric structure design can be carried out by means of bi directional design method presented by authors. Product structure design can be driven directly by the result of conceptual design according to the application protocol provided by authors and the 3 D assembly drawing of product can be generated automatically. The informtion integration of product conceptual design and structure design can be implemented. The bottle neck problem in the process of product concurrent design can be solved.

Abstract:Information is a very important resource in manufacturing systems. The vagueness or lack of information leads to uncertainty and information flow conflicts in designing complex engineering products. The formal realization of concurrent design process for manufacturing enterprise information systems is the sticking point of design process management. This paper proposes a novel method of modeling and analyzing for concurrent design process based on the unified modeling language (UML) and the polychromatic sets (PS) theory. Together with the feature-based part design and process planning, UML model of concurrent design process is established using the basic model primitives and constructs of UML activity diagram. According to the mapping principles, UML mode of feature-based part design and process planning is mapped formally into PS contour matrix model. Based on PS contour matrix, the model reduction, path search and time consumption of concurrent design process are analyzed quantitatively and the opportunities are discovered to improve concurrent design process.

Abstract:In dealing with the issue of integrating design and manufacturing, concurrent design evaluation plays an important role. This paper presents a concurrent design evaluation system (CONDENSE) developed to help product designers in evaluating possible design solutions and design alternatives during the early stage of design. It consists of two important functions: a qualitative aspect evaluation applied during the stage of searching for combinations of solution principles to help determine the design specifications, and a quantitative aspect evaluation applied to provide information on performance, assemblability, manufacturability and costs to facilitate design selection. The framework of CONDENSE is based on a blackboard architecture that requires the classification of knowledge into appropriate knowledge sources. As design data are interrelated and may have uncertainty, a graph decomposition algorithm is used in constructing the knowledge sources, and a linguistic evaluation module is integrated with the qualitative aspect evaluation subsystem to deal with data uncertainty. The proposed system has been validated with respect to the design of golf club heads. The results, which have been validated by experienced designers, are promising and can contribute to the speed-up of design and development, improvement of design quality and facilitation of design selection.

Abstract:Configuration design provides designers with a quick and cost-efficient way to develop new products. However, due to the initial complexity of industrial manufacturing systems, the number of alternative configurations from which designers select the most suitable one is too large. Considering the three main tasks relating to configuration design (i.e., modularisation, representation and evaluation), the authors review current configuration design approaches for the complex systems. Then, the authors point out there exists a gap between the representation task and evaluation task. Finally, a method which can improve the configuration design of industrial manufacturing systems is proposed.
