Abstract:The oscillator utilized a linear(F-P) cavity in which the halfwave plates and polarization splitters were placed to introduce polarization rotation.Combining the self-starting of semiconductor saturable absorber mirror,the passive mode-locked operation was achieved.The grating pair,providing negative group velocity dispersion,compensated the positive dispersion of fiber to compress the pulse.The stable mode-locked was operated with a pump power of 300 mW and the distance between the grating pair was 10 cm. The mode-locked output power was 28 mW while the pulse repetition was 20 MHz and the output spectrum width was 15 nm.The pulse width was less than 100 fs calculated by the formula that time bandwidth product equal to 0.315.

Abstract:Mode-locked fiber laser with tunable repetition and pulse width is widely used in optical communication and measurement applications.Usually the repetition and pulse width of the active mode-locked fiber laser can not be tuned independently.It is difficult to shorten the pulse width for a given repetition.In this experiment,we use multiple frequency modulation mode-locking(MFM-ML)method to drive mode-locker.The signal which is mixed by sine wave and rectangular wave is used as drive signal.By changing the parameter of the signal we obtain 4 different output pulse respectively,the pulse width are 705 ps,500 ps,407 ps,330 ps.

Abstract:Using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror(SESAM),a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser was demonstrated and stable sub-picosecond pulses were produced.The repetition frequency of pulse trains was several MHz.Nearly transform-limited 422 fs pulses with spectrum width of 6.35 nm were obtained,without any satellite pulses or pedestal.The duration of the pulses was measured by an autocorrelator with second harmonic generation,and pulses as narrow as 377 fs were achieved.During 10 hours,the laser can work stablely.The experimental setup was simple,compact,and self-started.

Abstract:A 10-GHz fiber-integrated ring laser incorporating a semiconductor optical amplifier and an electroabsorption modulator was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The time-domain ABCD law was employed to clarify the impacts of optical elements on the mode-locked pulses. The obtained analytical results were testified by the experimental ones. Such a ring laser also showed good performance as an optical pulse source, which generated a stable pulse train with a pulse width of 10 ps and a tunable wavelength range of 30 nm.

Abstract:A novel actively and passively mode-locked semiconductor optical amplifier fiber ring laser was presented, where semiconductor optical amplifier provided cavity gain and introduced nonlinear polarization rotation, whereas, intensity modulator not only acted as modulator but also polarizer. The pulses with duration below 3ps (FWHM) and peak power about 16mW at a repetition rate of 10GHz can be obtained in our system and the system stability may be enhanced. To investigate system parameters effects on mode-locked pulses, a theoretical model was developed.

Abstract:The mode-locking operation of the Nd:GGG crystal with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) was demonstrated. Continuous wave (CW) mode-locking was obtained with the pulse duration of 11 ps and the pulse repetition rate of 40.38 MHz. At 7 W of pump power, the maximum average output power of 1.1 W was obtained with the slope efficiency of 18.1%.

Abstract:We present a linear-cavity stretched-pulse fibre laser with mode locking by a nonlinear polarization rotation and by semiconductor saturable-absorber mirrors. A Q-switched mode-locking cw train and a mode-locking pulse train are obtained in the experiment. We investigate the effects of the equivalent fast saturable absorber and the slow saturable absorbers in experiment. It is found that neither the nonlinear polarization evolution effect nor a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror is enough to produce the stable cw mode-locking pulses in this experiment. A nonlinear polarization evolution effect controls the cavity loss to literally carve the pulses; semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors provide the self-restarting and maintain the stability of the mode-locking operation.

Abstract:We have for the first time demonstrated a 450 MHz actively mode-locked external-cavity semiconductor laser at 2 μm. The system can be tuned from 1870-1980 nm, which makes the laser a wavelength-agile pulsed source.

Abstract:In this paper, we report the experimental study of erbium-doped mode-locked fiber laser using semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Two configuration erbium-doped mode-locked fiber lasers, single wavelength operation and multi-wavelength operation, are study systematically. In single wavelength operating configuration, the fiber laser can operate harmonic mode-locking of 31 MHz repetition rate, which is two times of the fundamental repetition rate in our setup. In multi-wavelength operation, the output spectrum range from 1550 nm to 1556 nm with interval of 0.8 nm. The self-starting passive mode-locked laser is constructed in a Fabry-Perot configuration using the saturable absorber mirror as the back reflector of the cavity. Fiber Bragg grating and Chirped Bragg grating are used as the other reflector. Both of our mode-locked lasers are very compact, the output pulse train is stable, which has potential applications in high speed optical communication and optical sensor.

Abstract:We report on sub-50 fs pulse generation from a passively mode-locked (ML) Tm,Ho-codoped crystalline laser operating in a 2 mu m spectral region. A Tm, Ho:Ca(Gd, Lu)AlO4 laser delivers pulses as short as 46 fs at 2033 nm with an average power of 121 mW at a pulse repetition rate of similar to 78 MHz employing a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror as a saturable absorber. To the best of our knowledge, this result represents the shortest pulses ever generated from a Tm- and/or Ho-based solid-state laser. Polarization switching in the anisotropic gain material is observed in the ML regime without any polarization selection elements which is essential for the shortest pulses. Abstract:A stabilized 10-GHz actively mode-locked fiber ring laser constructed with non-polarization-maintained fiber was reported, whose long term stabilization was achieved by synchronous modulation technology based on an error signal extraction and procession circuit. Its output pulses could maintain over 8 hours with the pulse width of about 11 ps and the spectrum width of about 0.37 nm; in the meanwhile the output power and the center wavelength of the output pulse still kept stable at 1.6 mW and 1,550.3 nm respectively. Its output pulses were additionally compressed to 2 ps by high order soliton effect.

Abstract:We present an investigation of spectral dynamics of an ultrashort-pulse Er-doped fiber laser mode-locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The SESAM used has a saturable absorption modulation depth of 18%, a saturation fluence of 70 μJ/cm2 and a relaxation time of 10 ps at a wavelength of 1550 nm. Detailed pulse dynamics of the laser are measured at different pumping levels, and the laser operation is linked to the characteristics of the SESAM. It is observed that, as the pump power is increased, the laser operation changes from cw lasing, to self-Q switching, Q-switched mode-locking, and then cw mode-locking. Self-starting and stable mode-locking operation is achieved at a repetition rate of 12 MHz. The pulses with a width of 650 fs are produced at 1562-nm wavelength with a pump power of 80 mW, and the corresponding spectral width is about 5.0 nm (FWHM). Based on the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, self-starting mode-locking process in the fiber laser is simulated, which confirms that ultrashort pulses can be achieved. The calculated spectral characteristics of the mode-locked pulses are consistent with the experimental observations.

Abstract:Mode-locked lasers emitting ultrashort pulses in the 2-m spectral range at high (100-MHz) repetition rates offer unique opportunities for time-resolved molecular spectroscopy and are interesting as pump/seed sources for parametric frequency down-conversion and as seeders of ultrafast regenerative laser amplifiers. Passively mode-locked lasers based on Tm3+- and Ho3+-doped bulk solid-state materials have been under development for about a decade. In 2009 we demonstrated the first steady-state operation of such a Tm:KLu(WO4)2 laser using a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) saturable absorber (SA), generating 10-ps pulses at 1.95 m. In 2012 this laser produced 141-fs pulses at 2.037 m. More recently, the study of numerous active media with different SAs resulted in the generation of sub-100-fs (sub-10-optical-cycle) pulses. Materials with broad and smooth spectral gain profile were selected, naturally emitting above 2 m to avoid water vapor absorption/dispersion effects, including anisotropic materials, strong crystal-field distortion in hosts that do not contain rare-earths, crystals with structural or compositional (i.e. mixed compounds) disorder that exhibit inhomogeneous line broadening, mixed laser ceramics, and Tm,Ho-codoping of ordered and disordered crystals and ceramics. A broad absorption band in semiconducting SWCNTs spans from 1.6 to 2.1-m whereas the absorption of graphene extends into the mid-IR and scales for multilayers, increasing the modulation depth. Compared to GaSb-based semiconductor SA mirrors (SESAMs), the carbon nanostructures exhibit broader spectral response and can be fabricated by simpler and inexpensive techniques. Chirped mirrors were implemented for groupvelocity dispersion compensation, to generate the shortest pulses, down to 52 fs at 2.015 m.

High-energy picosecond pulses with a single spatial mode from a passively mode-locked, broad-area semiconductor laser

Abstract:We present a mode-locked semiconductor laser oscillator that emits few picosecond pulses (5-8ps at 379MHz repetition) with record peak power (112W) and pulse energy (0.5nJ) directly out of the oscillator (with no amplifier). To achieve this high power performance we employ a high-current broad-area, spatially multi-mode diode amplifier (0.3x5mm), placed in an external cavity that enforces oscillation in a single spatial mode. Consequently, the brightness of the beam is near-ideal ($M^2 = 1.3$). Mode locking is achieved by dividing the large diode chip (edge emitter) into two sections with independent electrical control: one large section for gain and another small section for a saturable absorber. Precise tuning of the reverse voltage on the absorber section allows to tune the saturation level and recovery time of the absorber, which provides a convenient control knob to optimize the mode-locking performance for various cavity conditions.

Abstract:We demonstrate a switchable and tunable dual-wavelength passively mode-locked fiber laser in a compact linear cavity. Two cascaded polarization-maintaining fiber Bragg gratings (PM-FBGs) are used as wavelength-selective components, and a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) is used as a mode-locked component. Four kinds of switchable single-wavelength and two kinds of switchable dual-wavelength mode-locked operations are achieved in 1.0-mu m band under lower pump power condition. Through temperature control, we obtain the tunable single-wavelength and dual-wavelength mode-locked operations, and the tunable wavelength range is about 0.5 nm when increase the temperature from 25 degrees C to 80 degrees C.

Abstract:We report on the generation of picosecond pulses in a modulator-based actively mode-locked ring cavity ytterbium-doped fibre laser by means of numerical simulation. A photonic crystal fibre (PCF) with large anomalous group velocity dispersion (GVD) and small nonlinearity can compensate the large normal GVD in the cavity accumulated by the ytterbium-doped fibre and the single mode fibre. Numerical models of the laser are established and solved by a simulation program. We study the laser behaviour and simulate the forming of the mode-locked pulses. The laser can easily produce stable pulses with 11.5 ps pulse width, 0.73 nJ pulse energy and 2.67 GHz repetition rate at 1 mu m, which indicates that this laser can perfectly meet the demands of smaller pulse width and higher pulse energy as a seed laser. More numerical simulations are performed to test several key parameters, such as the small signal gain, the mode-locking order and the GVD coefficient of the PCF. The results show how these parameters affect the output pulses and help us to optimize the laser performance. The numerical simulation plays a guiding role in optimal design for later experiments.

Abstract:A diode-pumped passively mode-locked Nd: CTGG disordered crystal laser has been experimentally demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge. Mode locked with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror, the laser generated 5.2 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 88 MHz. After intracavity dispersion compensation, the mode-locked pulses were shortened to 4.3 ps. Multiple emission wavelengths of the Nd:CTGG laser could be synchronously mode locked under dispersion compensation.

Abstract:Mode-locked laser operation near 2.05 µm based on a mixed sesquioxide Tm:LuYO3 ceramic is demonstrated. Continuous-wave and wavelength-tunable operation is also investigated. Employing a GaSb-based semiconductor saturable absorber mirror as a saturable absorber, a maximum average output power of 133 mW is obtained for a pulse duration of 59 fs. Pulses as short as 54 fs, i.e., eight optical cycles are generated at a repetition rate of ∼78MHz with an average output power of 51 mW. To the best of our knowledge, this result represents the shortest pulse duration ever achieved from Tm-based solid-state mode-locked lasers.
