Abstract:The high oil absorption resin can clean up the oil spill which has been noted as a major cause for environment pollution.But the crosslinking network of the high oil absorption resin by chemical crosslinking agent is so tight that there are two problems for the resin to absorb oil,low oil absorbency and low releasing for oil-absorbed resin.The low oil absorbency will cause more resin to be used.The oil absorbed resin which can not be cyclically used will cause a solid pollution again.In order to solve these two problems,the concept of physical crosslinking is introduced into the research field of oil absorption resin which is traditionally crosslinked chemically only to loose the chemical crosslinking network.Acrylic-based high oil absorption resins with both chemical crosslinking and physical crosslinking were prepared in the suspension polymerization.The oil absorption rate and optimized ratio of two monomers in two kinds of different resins are compared.The oil absorption properties of two kinds of different resins produced from monomer with low affinity to oil and effects of the quantity of chemical crosslinking agent on them are compared too.Results indicate that the introduction of physical crosslinking will improve the oil absorption properties,including raising oil absorption rate and increasing oil absorbency of resins produced from monomer with low affinity to oil.In addition,it increases the quantity of monomer with low affinity to oil in optimized ratio of monomer.Results also indicate that partially physical crosslinking resin have a best amount range of chemical crosslinking agent.

Abstract:The concept of physical crosslinking was introduced into the research field of oil-absorption resins, which were traditionally synthesized only by chemical crosslinking. Specifically, the partially physical crosslinking acrylic series for high-oil-absorption resins were prepared in the suspension process, and the swelling behavior of the samples was observed and recorded online. This demonstrated that a kind of relaxing three-dimensional network was indeed formed by the introduction of polybutadiene (PB). The effects of monomer feed ratios, crosslinking agent concentration and type, particle size, and temperature on the oil absorbency and oil-absorption speed were investigated. The results indicated that there were an optimum monomer feed ratio and an optimum amount of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or PB. In addition, the particle size and temperature had a serious influence on the oil-absorption speed in comparison with the monomer feed ratio and the crosslinking agent concentration and type. The results also showed that particle size affected oil absorbency to a great degree and that the effect of temperature on oil absorbency was complex. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Synthesis of high oil-adsorption copolymer

Abstract:Butyl acrylate copolymers with high oil-absorption were prepared in the suspension process. It is focused on the effects of initiator level, polymerization temperature and crossslinking agent concentration on the oil uptake and gel fraction of the copolymers. The type and concentration of the crossslinking agent is the main factor affecting the oil uptake, while the initiator level and polymerization temperature will also give considerable effects. Under optimized operation conditions, acrylic copolymer with toluene-uptake up to 25g/g has been synthesized.

Synthesis and characterization of poly(styrene-methacrylate) highly oil absorptive resin

Abstract:Cross-linked styrene-methacrylate highly oil absorptive resin was synthesized by suspension polymerization. The influences of alkyl methacrylate type, mass ratio of monomers, initiator dosage, crosslinking agent dosage, disperser dosage on resin properties were investigated. Suitable process conditions were: mass ratio of dodecyl methacrylate to styrene 4:3, initiator benzoyl peroxide 0.8% (mass fraction in monomer mixture), crosslinker divinylbenzene 0.8% (mass fraction in monomer mixture), disperser polyvinyl alcohol 3% (mass fraction in monomer mixture), and oil absorptive power of obtained resin is about 13.9 g/g for methylbenzene and 24.6 g/g for chloroform. Structure and properties of the resin were investigated by means of IR, SEM, TG and DSC. FTIR and SEM determinations show that the resin is styrene-dodecyl methacrylate copolymer. TG and DSC measurements show that the resin can be used at 130°C.

Resin from Liaohe Heavy Oil: Molecular Structure, Aggregation Behavior, and Effect on Oil Viscosity

Abstract:Resin accounts for over 30% of the composition of Liaohe heavy crude oil and can result in severe difficulties in oil recovery and transportation. To determine the structure of the resin extracted from Liaohe heavy oil, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy, and NMR spectroscopy were employed to determine the chemical structure of the resin. The results showed that the resin molecule is composed of anthracene, two cycloalkanes, and six alkyl chains grafted on the cyclic-structure core. UV–visible spectroscopy, turbidity measurements, dynamic light scattering, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were used to observe the resin aggregation behavior upon addition of a poor solvent. The effect of the resin on the rheology of model oils was investigated systematically. The π–π interactions among resin molecules impose a critical impact on the assembly of the resins. The quantum mechanics calculations revealed that there are two low-well depths of interaction energy when two resin molecules approach, which implies that the bending and branching structure of the resin aggregates may originate from the staggered stacking of the resin molecules. These findings can improve our understanding of the resin aggregation behavior and thus enlighten the solution to the flowing problem during recovery and transportation of heavy oil with a high resin content.

Study Effect on Dispersing Agent on Oil-absorptive Properties of High Oil-absorption Resins

Abstract:Recently,with the oil coming into the high water cut stage,the amount of water also significantly increased at the same time.The oilfield produced water increased daily,the study of effective oil waste water purification materials should be carried out.High oil-absorbing resin is a kind of self-swelling material.The high oil-absothing resin has been prepared by suspension polymerization,using butylmethacrylate as the monomer,N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide as the crosslinking agent,BPO as the minitiator,water as the disperal phase and the different dispersing agent in this paper.The effects of the different dispersing agent on the oil-absorption capacities of the resin are investigated.Then the optimum conditions are obtained.The results show that as dispersing agent the PVA could obtain good oil-absorbing results.

Abstract:Characteristics of adsorption for aniline,phenol and benzoic acid were reported at different temperature onto the three adsorption resins of Amberlite XAD-4,AM-1 and JX101,and interpreted with frontier orbital theory.The results show that the energy level of LUMO or HOMO of adsorbents will be changed when the adsorbents were modified by the proper functional groups,which will induce the interaction between adsorbent and adsorbate and the additional chemical adsorption capacities.

Abstract:Fishcher–Tropsch synthesis products contain ultrahigh-content α-olefins, which are of great value if the challenging separation of α-olefin/paraffin is achieved through energy-saving ways. Adsorption separation provides a promising alternative to distillation. One of the most significant differences between the adsorption separation of long-chain and light hydrocarbons is the steric hindrance of the molecular chain. Herein, a combination of window size, metal node spacing, and bending degree is proposed to quantitatively describe the structure–property relationship for the separation of long-chain α-olefin/paraffin on microporous materials. The adsorption capacity, selectivity, adsorption sites, and host–guest interactions of α-olefin/paraffin on CuBTC are investigated in detail to illustrate the structure–property relationship. The contributions of different interactions to the overall adsorption energy are innovatively quantified. This work guides the design of adsorbent structures and provides a generic approach to investigate the host–guest interactions during the adsorption or catalytic process of nanoporous materials.

Abstract:Long-chain α-olefins have a high added value as important raw materials for many highly marketable products. Fishcher-Tropsch synthesis products contain ultrahigh-content α-olefins, which are of great value if the challenging separation of α-olefin/paraffin is achieved through energy-saving ways, for which adsorption separation is an attractive technology. One of the most significant differences between the adsorption separation of long-chain and light hydrocarbons is the steric hindrance of the molecular chain. Herein, we propose a combination of window size, metal node spacing, and bending degree to quantitatively describe the adsorption cavity structure for the separation of long-chain α-olefin/paraffin. The general cavity structural characteristics of microporous materials with good separation performance for long-chain α-olefin/paraffin are revealed. The selective adsorption of liquid C 6 and C 8 α-olefin/paraffin mixtures on CuBTC (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) was studied in detail to reveal the influence of the cavity structure on the adsorption and interaction using a combination of batch adsorption experiments and molecular simulation techniques. CuBTC exhibited 360 and 366 mg/g olefin adsorption capacities for C 6 and C 8 linear α-olefins, respectively. The adsorption energies were −0.540 and −0.338 eV for C 8 linear α-olefin and paraffin, respectively. The contributions of different types of interactions to the overall adsorption energy were quantified to illustrate the adsorption energy difference between α-olefin/paraffin and CuBTC. This work provides a new understanding of the long-chain hydrocarbon adsorption behavior different from ethylene/ethane and propylene/propane, which guides the design of adsorbents for α-olefin/paraffin separation.

Abstract:In this study, biochars with different structures were prepared through HNO3 oxidation and secondary pyrolysis to study the relationship between the structure of biochar and its selectivity for the adsorption of light and heavy aromatics in bio‐oil. The results showed that the adsorption rates of biochar with different structures ranged from 2.90 to 4.00 g bio‐oil per g biochar. The influence of pore structure was dominant, followed by the influence of O‐containing functional groups and the degree of graphitization. The higher the adsorption capacity of biochar for bio‐oil, the smaller the concentrations of the light aromatic model compounds in the absorbed bio‐oil (ABO). Among the five light aromatics, biochar has the best adsorption selectivity for dihydroxybiphenyl and the worst for eugenol and propyl phenol. This is attributed to the diphenyl ring structure of dihydroxybiphenyl, which makes it more susceptible to adsorption, and other light model compounds only have one benzene ring. In summary, biochar demonstrates better adsorption selectivity for heavy aromatics than light aromatics. The more developed the pore structure is, the more enriched O‐containing functional groups are, and the higher the graphitization degree of biochar is, the better the selective adsorption of aromatic compounds in bio‐oil.

Abstract:A comparison study is made on the adsorption behaviors of benzoic acid on the new type high-crosslinked adsorption resin NJ-8 with that on Amberlite XAD-4, including the static equilibrium adsorption, the adsorption thermodynamic properties for explaining the adsorptive mechanism. The column breakthrough experiment indicates the adsorption capacity of NJ-8 toward benzoic acid is about 1.6 times as high as that of Amberlite XAD-4.

Abstract:Hydrate plugging is always a threat to the safety of deep-sea oil and gas transportation process. With the deepening of researches on hydrates, the influence of complex crude oil components on hydrate formation has become a hotspot. As two important natural surfactants in crude oil, resins and asphaltenes can adsorb at the oil-water interface affecting the properties of interfacial films. Therefore, they are believed to affect the formation of hydrates. Here, the growth mechanism of hydrate particles in the low viscosity water-in-oil emulsions with pure resins and resins mixing with asphaltenes is explained in terms of interfacial rheology. Firstly, the microscopic observation results show that a small quantity of resins can improve the dispersibility of asphaltenes, but an excessive quantity of resins can lead to counterproductive effects. Then, the changes in dynamic surface pressure (DSP) and interfacial dilational modulus (IDM) indicates that resins can significantly reduce the interfacial tension (IFT) but have little effect on the IDM, due to their liquid-like adsorption film properties. On the contrary, asphaltenes can greatly enhance the IDM and their interfacial affinity is strengthened by resins. Consequently, the presence of resins makes it harder for the hydrate particles to maintain the initial morphology. Finally, based on the experimental data of hydrate growth time and interfacial parameters, it is suggested that the joint effects of resins and asphaltenes on hydrate growth is related to their respective content, relative content, and oil-water interfacial area.

Abstract:It is very meaningful to study the adsorption behavior of oil and water in shale nanopores in the context of enhanced oil recovery. Whereas, the investigation of shale and water adsorption in organic–inorganic pores is scarce. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to study the adsorption behavior of multi-component shale oil and water in the novel kerogen-kaolinite pores. The adsorption characteristics of shale oil were studied through fluid density distribution, and the interaction energies between the fluid and the walls were calculated to describe the adsorption strength. The results show that different roughness, wettability, and polarity of the organic and inorganic walls caused the adsorption characteristics and strengths of shale oil and water to be asymmetrical. In the kerogen-gibbsite pore, water can form a film and adsorb near the hydrophilic gibbsite surface, while the shale oil exhibits heterogeneous adsorption on the other side of the pore. The presence of water will shield the influence of hydrophilic surfaces on the adsorption behavior of shale oil. Moreover, the active components of shale oil will form hydrogen bonds with water and regularly arrange near the water film, which makes it easy to capture the asphaltene clusters and block the pores. In the kerogen-siloxane pore, the adsorption peak of shale oil near the hydrophobic siloxane wall is much higher than that near the kerogen wall, while the adsorption strength is lower than that of the kerogen wall. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of water content, saline, and deprotonation (protonation) of active components on fluid adsorption behavior. Our study provides an in-depth understanding of shale oil and water adsorption in complex nanopores, especially the influence of wall wettability on the adsorption behavior.

Abstract:The frontier orbital energy values of adsorption resins of polyvinyl benzene modified by different functional groups were calculated with the semi-empirical method of AM1, and the satisfactory groups were designed. Based on the dimension of the adsorbates, the resins having the high specific surface and matched porous radius were prepared. The adsorption isotherms of phenolic compounds were determined at 303K. The adsorption efficiencies of different adsorbents were compared with those of Amberlite XAD-4, and the adsorption mechanism was elucidated.

Abstract:In this study, acrylic ester resin YWB was prepared and utilized as adsorbent to investigate the adsorption mechanism of aromatic sulfonate onto it. For comparison, the commercial resins XAD-7, D-301, and XAD-4 were also employed along with YWB. Different adsorption and desorption behaviors of these resins showed that the matrices of resins and functional groups on their surface significantly affected the adsorption mechanism. The adsorption mechanism of acrylic ester resin with surfactant and dye, two kinds of aromatic sulfonates, were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which provided valuable information regarding the adsorption mechanism of adsorbate onto acrylic ester resin YWB. The changes of spectrum after adsorption were mainly attributed to the formation of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction forces, and the formation of the oxonium group, although the hydrophobic interactions played an important role in binding aromatic sulfonate onto the resin surface from the solutions. The results indicated that the oxygen atoms of ester functional groups made a contribution to the adsorption mechanism.

Abstract:Herein, a durable superhydrophobic/superoleophilic membrane with micro-/nano-hierarchical structure was achieved through molecular and structural design of fluorinated polyacrylonitrile-based membrane. In which, the introduction of perfluorooctanol acrylate into copolymer chain and usage of electrospinning/electrospraying technology followed by heat post-treatment provided low surface energy and durable hierarchical structure, respectively. The resultant membrane demonstrated superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity with water contact angle of 160° and oil contact angle of 0° in air, which endowed the membrane with excellent separation ability for oil/water mixture with separation efficiency above 99% and ultrahigh flux beyond 8000 L/m2/h. Furthermore, the obtained membrane maintained its superhydrophobicity after exposure to broad pH, organic solvents, high temperature and ultrasonic treatment, ascribed to the chemical reaction of cyano groups on the surface of fibers and particles during the heat post-treatment. This work provides a promising strategy to fabricate superwetting membrane to remove trace amount of water in oil.

Characteristics of Mesoporous in Shale Oil Reservoirs by Small Angle X-ray Scattering Method

Abstract:Shale pores were often entirely or partially filled by organic matters in its oil window. In this study, successive solvent extraction was used to extract organic matters in shale samples from the Dongying sag by using a range of organic solvents with varying polarities and chemical structures. Small angle X-ray scattering method was used to characterize and analyze the mesoporous distribution of shale before and after solvent extraction. Results show that the extraction effect of hexane was weak. Strong polar solvent such as chloroform, the mixture of methanol, acetone and chloroform (MAC) and the mixture of dichloromethane and methanol can improve the extraction ability of organic matter. Mixed solvent of carbon disulfide and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (CS2-NMP) can change and destroy pore structures. Diameter of maximum peak point of shale sample after solvent extraction was about 10 nm. The most probable aperture and average pore size were in the range of 6.7～14.5 nm and 15.9～22.8 nm, respectively. The relative percentage content of fine mesopores was in the range of 9.5％～32.3％. In the stage of hydrocarbon generation, clay minerals provide effective reservoir space for hydrocarbon. The corresponding pore distribution curve of shale with high clay mineral content was concentrated in the smaller pores. There was a significantly positive correlation between the relative percentage content of fine mesoporous and parameters of fractal dimension. The specific surface of pore related to clay minerals tended to be rough, which provided favorable conditions for the occurrence of hydrocarbon. The distribution characteristics of mesoporous in the thermal simulation and natural evolutionary samples reveal that the percentage content of fine mesoporous shows a trend of increasing first and then decreasing in the process of thermal evolution of shale. In contrast, thick mesoporous shows an opposite trend.

Abstract:<div><p>In this study, the adsorption behaviors of a series of systematically designed resins with different physical textures and chemical characteristics were investigated towards sulfonic acid dyes and the adsorption mechanism involving physical and chemical adsorption was elaborately explored. The newly synthesized resins include the hyper-crosslinked resin series which possesses the largest physical adsorption capacity, aminated resin series which has the largest uploading of amino groups and aminated crosslinked resin series which was functionalized with amino groups after the optimization of physical structure. The aminated crosslinked resin AC-2-DETA displayed the best adsorption performance (325.63 mg/g) towards BA and the adsorption capacities increased by 93.0% compared to commercial resin H-103 and the superiority in adsorption is applicable to other dyes with diverse characteristics. Detailed investigation on chemical-physical adsorption interaction based on N<sub>2</sub> adsorption-desorption study revealed the significance of associating chemical modification with structure optimization. The former provided hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interacting sites and the latter regulated porous structure and BET surface area.
