Abstract:The concept of a novel Fixed Bed Bionic Reactor (FBBR) is presented in this work. The core idea is to use distributed input and output network, compact channel structure and small scale packed beds. In the FBBR, fine catalyst particles with high effectiveness can be used while the pressure drop stays at a rather low level, which breaks through the limitations of the existing fixed-bed reactors. The flow distribution uniformity is the key to the design of the FBBR. A general mathematical model is established for the FBBR elementary unit, and concise analytic solutions are obtained to describe the profile of the distribution. Characteristic parameters are extracted from the model and uniformity criteria can be set up as theoretical instructions for the design of the FBBR. To demonstrate the practical value, two application cases are presented. A large scale multilayer radial FBBR is designed for Methanol to Propylene reaction, having the advantages of higher propylene selectivity and productivity. Then a small scale modular FBBR is designed for catalytic combustion of lean methane, having the advantages of being nearly isothermal with autothermal function and being miniaturized and modularized with better flexibility in satisfying different scale of productions. Abstract:Batch chemical reactors are good candidates for the applicationof advanced process control because they involve kinetic parameters that are highly uncertain and slowly time varying. In this paper, an advanced methodology combining the predictive functional control (PFC) and PID control is proposed. The control strategy composed of four methods has been designed for temperature tracking control of batch chemical reactors. On the basis of SUPCON JX-300 distributed control system, a software package for batch reactor temperature tracking advanced control has been developed. The industrial application of the software package has achieved good results.

Abstract:An advanced control strategy as the combination of predictive functional control and PID control is studied. With an industrial application background of temperature control in chemical reactor, predictive functional controller and transparent control scheme are designed. Simulation results show that the transparent control system obtains good tracking control performance, enough disturbance rejection and good robustness. At the same time, the advanced control strategy has been implemented in the SUPCON JX-300 distributed control systems and has provided good results.

Abstract:Fluidized bed reactors (FBRs) have been developed to establish multiple temperature zones for various industrial processes. To overcome the common weakness, this work proposed to spray liquid into bottom and upper zones, respectively, to realize multiple temperature zones FBR (MTZFBR). Temperature, pressure, and acoustic emission techniques were applied to fully characterize liquid interaction and hydrodynamics. Compared with the bottom liquid‐spraying approach, the upper liquid‐spraying approach showed higher temperature difference (ΔT) and better fluidization stability, thus was selected for further control studies. Effects of liquid flow rate, static bed height, and inlet gas temperature on MTZFBR were studied systematically. The results showed that increasing liquid evaporation behavior or decreasing liquid bridge behavior enhance ΔT and fluidization stability and vice versa. G–L–S fluidization pattern depended mostly on the liquid behaviors and fluidization stability, and thus the stabilized MTZFBR could be regarded as a coexisted mode of two distinctive G–L–S fluidization patterns. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 1454–1466, 2016

Abstract:This paper introduces the design and presents the research findings of the identification and control application for an industrial Circulation Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler. Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) model is used in the model identification where steam flow is selected as the operation-point (scheduling) variable. Three kinds of weighting functions, namely linear, cubic splines and Gaussian functions are compared. LPV model based Model Predictive Control (MPC) is also simulated. Test results show that LPV model is more accurate than linear model, and LPV MPC yields a better control effect than linear MPC.

Abstract:An immersion and invariance (I&I) manifold based adaptive control algorithm is presented for a class of continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) to realize performance-oriented control in this paper. The nonlinear contraction method is combined into the control law design to render the closed-loop CSTR system globally asymptotically stable, firstly. Then, the I&I method is used to form the adaptation law such that the off-the-manifold coordinate (the parameter estimation error) converges to zero using P-monotone property enforced by selecting tuning function in manifold. As a result, the state of the closed-loop CSTR converges to its desired value asymptotically. The simulation is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the presented algorithm.

Abstract:In the paper, a novel dual circulating fluidized bed (DCFB) reactor is introduced, which can be widely applied in catalytic cracking, chemical looping combustion, coal/biomass combustion and gasification, and gas adsorption, etc. The study mainly investigates the effects of specific operating parameters on pressure balance and solid circulation rate, including total solids inventory, riser gas velocity, bubbling fluidized bed gas velocity and pot-seal gas velocity. It is found that changes of those parameters lead to variations in pressure balance and riser axial voidage in DCFB system, and further affect solid concentration and solid circulation rate in the system. To be more specific, total solids inventory, riser gas velocity and bubbling fluidized bed gas velocity have a major impact on solid concentration and solid circulation rate, while pot-seal gas velocity only exerts a minor impact. Besides, the changing of overall pressure drop across the bubbling fluidized bed is consistent with variations in pressure drops in the other parts of the system, with the former equaling △Pr+△Pc+△Pp-t+△Pud1+△Pud2. In this way pressure balance in the system is maintained. Eventually the paper reaches the conclusion that relevant operating parameters can be adjusted to control pressure distribution and solid circulation rate in different parts of the system and further to ensure the safe and stable operation of DCFB reactors.
Structure Restricted (PID) Controller Performance Assessment for Multi-Stage Batch Processes with Tracking and Regulatory Requirements

Abstract:A new control performance assessment method based on a structured residual for multi-stage batch processes is presented. After separating the process into different stages according to reference signal dynamics, based on specific tracking and regulatory requirements of different stage, a structured residual focusing on deterministic part of output error with different weights on each stage is minimized to form the performance benchmark. In this way, it explores the equilibrium control effect in tracking and regulatory stages of batch processes in the whole batch sense. The best control performance with respect to stage balance and the overall optimal controller settings are searched using Newton's method. The application to an exothermic chemical batch reactor shows its effectiveness and feasibility.

Abstract:A two-dimensional pseudo-homogeneous dispersion model was employed according to the reaction kinetics and analysis of commercial reactor in order to describe and evaluate the operation conditions of industrial fixed-bed reactor for hydrochlorination of acetylene.The Crank-Nicholson method was used with experiential data from pilot-scale reactor in order to solve the equations.Results showed that the simulation results accorded well with the industrial data.Simulation results showed that the space velocity of acetylene and catalyst performance greatly influenced the distribution of reactor temperature and products when the catalyst activity was low.An expression of the optimum space velocity of acetylene can be deduced by considering the relationship between the space velocity of acetylene and the catalyst activity.The tube wall temperature 98 ℃ and tube size Φ51 mm×3.5 mm is rational at present use by simulation.
Intelligent sequencing batch reactor control from theory, through modelling, to full-scale application

Abstract:Sequencing batch reactors (SBR) can provide a high level of treatment and have potentially great flexibility in their modes of operation enabling the operator - in principle - to adjust the way the SBR operates to provide the desired treatment goal. In practice, however, SBRs are most often operated using simple phases with fixed time intervals. Advanced control techniques can be used to enable an SBR to realize its full treatment potential and maximize its capacity and this paper describes several online measurements and control approaches that can be used to do so. A case study is presented that demonstrates how first a process model was used to test three control options for the Daniel Island wastewater treatment facility in South Carolina, USA, followed by field testing of two approaches and the subsequent implementation of one of these to enable the plant to maximize its treatment capacity.

Abstract:Abstract In 2006, Dixon et al. published the comprehensive review article entitled “Packed tubular reactor modeling and catalyst design using computational fluid dynamics.” More than one decade later, many researchers have contributed to novel insights, as well as a deeper understanding of the topic. Likewise, complexity has grown and new issues have arisen, for example, by coupling microkinetics with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In this review article, the latest advances are summarized in the field of modeling fixed-bed reactors with particle-resolved CFD, i.e. a geometric resolution of every pellet in the bed. The current challenges of the detailed modeling are described, i.e. packing generation, meshing, and solving with an emphasis on coupling microkinetics with CFD. Applications of this detailed approach are discussed, i.e. fluid dynamics and pressure drop, dispersion, heat and mass transfer, as well as heterogeneous catalytic systems. Finally, conclusions and future prospects are presented.

Abstract:Start-up and process control of a pilot-scale anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (Anammox) bioreactor were studied at ambient temperature. Inoculated with a mixture of nitrification-denitrification sludge, nitritation sludge, anaerobic floc sludge and anaerobic granular sludge, the pilot-scale Anammox bioreactor was successfully started up within 255 days at 5 degrees C-27 degrees C. The nitrogen removal rate reached 1.30 kg/(m3 x d). Three facets were taken into account to facilitate the process initiation. First, in terms of alkalization in Anammox, influent pH was kept at about 6.8. Besides, nitrite concentration was kept as low as 13-36 mg/L. Finally, 2% (volumetric ratio) of Anammox sludge from lab-scale bioreactors was supplemented to the pilot-scale one.

Abstract:Performance of a pilot plant fixed-bed reactor with repeated coupling of aerobic and anaerobic process (rCAA) in the treatment of industrial wastewater with high ash content was investigated.A linear relationship between suspended solids (SS) and COD along the flow direction was observed in the rCAA reactor.Through periodical discharge of sludge from the bottom of the rCAA reactor,the sludge production of the rCAA reactor was controlled to a low level,and the quality and stability of effluent was improved as well.Study of changes in NH4+-N concentrations along the components of the rCAA reactor revealed competitions between heterotrophic bacteria and autotrophic nitrifying bacteria.This competition,together with the disintegration of sludge in anaerobic components,was shown to be very important to the quality of the effluent.

Abstract:To achieve an appropriate mixture of ammonium and nitrite for anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX), 50% partial nitritation was optimized in a fixed bed biofilm reactor treating synthetic wastewater. Results suggested that 50% partial nitritation could be achieved by stepwise increases of influent NH4+-N at pH of 7.8±0.2, temperature of 30±1°C and dissolved oxygen (DO) of 0.5–0.8mgl−1. Hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent alkalinity did significantly affect partial nitritation. At HRT 12h, 50% partial nitritation could be kept stable, regardless of influent NH4+-N variation, by controlling the influent HCO3−/NH4+ molar ratio at 1:1. The fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) results indicated the abundance of evolution of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) coincided well with the performance of partial nitritation. Furthermore, the AOB were highly affiliated with Nitrosomonas spp. and Nitrosospira spp. dominated (64.1%) in the biofilm with a compact structure during the stable 50% partial nitritation period.

Abstract:A novel on-line optimizing control strategy for wall-cooled fixed-bed reactors is presented. It is essentially a nonlinear model predictive algorithm in which the profit is uniquely expressed as the objective function, instead of a square sum of the deviations between model predicted outputs and a desired output variable trajectory. Excessive bed temperature is avoided by setting a constraint on the maximum reactor temperature. Excellent performance including fast tracking to the optimum operating condition and small overshooting of the reactor temperature has been demonstrated by taking advantage of a dynamic KL-NN reactor model.

Abstract:The slurry reactor is an important type of gas-liquid-solid multiphase reactors. It has the advantages of simple construction, good mass and heat transfer performance, and feasibility of on-line addition or replacement of catalysts. It has received attentions from both academic and industrial circles. This paper reviews the study of hydrodynamics of slurry reactor, including flow regime, gas holdup, bubble behavior, and mass and heat transfer rates. The effects of temperature, pressure and liquid properties on the hydrodynamics are discussed. Novel slurry reactors, such as multi-stage slurry reactor and slurry reactors with internals are introduced. The industrial applications of slurry reactor on bulk chemical and fine chemical industries and environmental processes are summarized. Perspectives are given on the potential application and future research of slurry reactors.
