Abstract:Hydrogen adsorption on interfaces plays an indispensable role in catalytic processes such as the hydrogen evolution reaction. Despite extensive studies, the underlying mechanism of interfacial adsorption is not fully understood. Here, we performed the DFT calculations on the hydrogen adsorption on the metal surface near the Ni/NiO interface. The results reveal that the hydrogen adsorption is site-dependent, and the interfacial effect exhibits a strong dependence on the distance to the boundary. The electronic structure analysis suggests that both the ligand effect and charge transfer effect contribute to weakening the hydrogen adsorption near the Ni/NiO boundary. The incorporation of the d-band center shift and the oxidation state of the adsorption site as the effective descriptor is suggested to understand the underlying mechanism of surface adsorption. The descriptor seems to capture the structural sensitivity in hydrogen adsorption across a variety of interfacial models fairly well, and a nearly linear relationship is found between Delta G( H) and the descriptor.
Correlating C═C, C═O, and C═N Hydrogenation Activity with Hydrogen Binding Energies on Ni–Fe Bimetallic Catalysts

Abstract:Ni-Fe bimetallic catalysts have been found active in various hydrogenation reactions. Previous reports have hypothesized many explanations to demonstrate the promotion effect of Fe. However, these theories cannot predict the falling part of the volcanic curve of the hydrogenation activity with the Fe/(Ni + Fe) ratio. Here, we studied the hydrogenation pathways over Ni monometallic and Ni-Fe bimetallic sites with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Ethylene, furfural, and methanimine were chosen as the representative reactants with C=C, C=O, and C=N, respectively. The energy profiles on Ni-3, (NiFe)-Fe-2, and NiFe2 sites were calculated. The results showed that the activation energy of the rate-determining step follows the trend (NiFe)-Fe-2 < NiFe2 < Ni-3 for all three hydrogenation reactions. Therefore, the Ni(3)Fe(1)( )catalyst was predicted to be the most active because it has the highest density of (NiFe)-Fe-2 sites. Furthermore, the H binding energy was proved to be an efficient descriptor for the activation energy and hydrogenation activity. With a decrease in the H binding energy, the activation energy of hydrogenation reactions increased, indicating lower reaction activity. To verify our calculation results, the Ni monometallic and Ni-Fe bimetallic catalysts were synthesized with the co-impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and were evaluated in ethylene hydrogenation reactions. As predicted by DFT calculations, the activity showed a volcanic relationship with the Fe/(Ni + Fe) ratio with Ni3Fe1 located at the top.

Abstract:Mesoporous core-shell structure Ag@SiO2 nanospheres are constructed to prevent Ag nanoparticles from aggregation during the hydrogenation reaction. The prepared catalyst shows superior catalytic performance for hydrogenation of nitro compounds with 100% conversion and selectivity without any by-products, which also indicates good recycling performance for several times use.

Abstract:Four commercially available silver molecular sieve (SMS) hydrogen adsorbents were tested and characterized in terms of both material characterization and hydrogen adsorption performance, and an attempt was made to establish the constitutive relationship between material structure and hydrogen adsorption. The results show that the four SMS products have an average Ag content between 33 and 36 wt%, with the SBET between 200 and 400 m2/g and the cumulative hydrogen adsorption capacity in the range of 10-20 cm3(STP)/g. The two SMS products with the best hydrogen adsorption performance can replace or even surpass PdO in the vacuum interlayer of liquid hydrogen vessels. Their hydrogen adsorption capacity at an equilibrium pressure of 2 x 10-2 to 10 Pa is about two orders of magnitude greater than that of PdO. The constitutive relationship between material characterization and hydrogen adsorption performance suggests that the realization of new efficient SMS hydrogen adsorbents requires micro-mesoporous composite molecular sieves with large specific surface area and pore volume, and further improvements in the silver ions exchange process to load more silver ions into the internal pores of the molecular sieve microspheres.

Abstract:The hydrogen reduction of the red-ox Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite is an essential step for catalyst preparation. In this letter, various adsorption modes of the H(2) molecules on the Fe(III)/ZSM-5 zeolite were first explored by density functional theory, with their exact configurations provided. The adsorption energies revealed that the two configurations with Fe(III) at the sextet states are the main ones, consistent with the results of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. On such basis, the vibrational and orbital analyses were made, which will be valuable for the future studies on the Fe/ZSM-5 systems.

Abstract:Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs), characterized by the encapsulation of metal nanoparticles by the support oxide, have a significant impact on various heterogeneous catalytic reactions. In this study, we present our investigations on tuning the catalytic performance of CO2 hydrogenation through regulating the SMSI in a Ni/Sm2O3 catalyst. Our results demonstrate that the complete encapsulation of Ni nanoparticles with amorphous Sm2O3, achieved through H-2 reduction, leads to nearly full selectivity to CO. In contrast, with controlled in situ thermal postannealing in an H-2/CO2/N-2 mixture, the encapsulated Sm2O3 layer can be partially removed and crystallized, as revealed by atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses, which results in enhanced activity and a full selectivity toward CH4. In addition, the prolonged postannealing durations completely remove the Sm2O3 overlayer, causing a decline in CO2 methanation activity. These findings underscore the critical role of the SMSI effect in CO2 hydrogenation activity and offer valuable insights for regulating SMSI to produce targeted value-added chemicals.

Unraveling the Catalytic Effect of Hydrogen Adsorption on Pt Nanoparticle Shape-Change

Abstract:The activity of metal catalysts depends sensitively on dynamic structural changes that occur during operating conditions. The mechanistic understanding underlying such transformations in small Pt nanoparticles (NPs) of $\sim1-5$ nm in diameter, commonly used in hydrogenation reactions, is currently far from complete. In this study, we investigate the structural evolution of Pt NPs in the presence of hydrogen using reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and X-ray spectroscopy measurements. To gain atomistic insights into adsorbate-induced structural transformation phenomena, we employ a combination of MD based on first-principles machine-learned force fields with extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements. Simulations and experiments provide complementary information, mutual validation, and interpretation. We obtain atomic-level mechanistic insights into `order-disorder' structural transformations exhibited by highly dispersed heterogeneous Pt catalysts upon exposure to hydrogen. We report the emergence of previously unknown candidate structures in the small Pt NP limit, where exposure to hydrogen leads to the appearance of a `quasi-icosahedral' intermediate symmetry, followed by the formation of `rosettes' on the NP surface. Hydrogen adsorption is found to catalyze these shape transitions by lowering their temperatures and increasing the apparent rates, revealing the dual catalytic and dynamic nature of interaction between nanoparticle and adsorbate. Our study also offers a new pathway for deciphering the reversible evolution of catalyst structure resulting from the chemisorption of reactive species, enabling the determination of active sites and improved interpretation of experimental results with atomic resolution.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts exhibit high selectivity in hydrogenation due to their isolated active sites, which ensure uniform adsorption configurations of substrate molecules. Compared with the achievement in catalytic selectivity, there is still a long way to go in exploiting the catalytic activity of single-atom catalysts. Herein, we developed highly active and selective catalysts in selective hydrogenation by embedding Pt single atoms in the surface of Ni nanocrystals (denoted as Pt1/Ni nanocrystals). During the hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene, the TOF numbers based on surface Pt atoms of Pt1/Ni nanocrystals reached ∼1800 h-1 under 3 atm of H2 at 40 °C, much higher than that of Pt single atoms supported on active carbon, TiO2, SiO2, and ZSM-5. Mechanistic studies reveal that the remarkable activity of Pt1/Ni nanocrystals derived from sufficient hydrogen supply because of spontaneous dissociation of H2 on both Pt and Ni atoms as well as facile diffusion of H atoms on Pt1/Ni nanocrystals. Moreover, the ensemble composed of the Pt single atom and nearby Ni atoms in Pt1/Ni nanocrystals leads to the adsorption configuration of 3-nitrostyrene favorable for the activation of nitro groups, accounting for the high selectivity for 3-vinylaniline.
New insights into the mechanism of reactive adsorption desulfurization on Ni/ZnO catalysts: Theoretical evidence showing the existence of interfacial sulfur transfer pathway and the essential role of hydrogen

Abstract:As well known in the petroleum industry and academia, Ni/ZnO catalysts have excellent desulfurization performance. However, the sulfur transfer mechanism of reactive adsorption desulfurization (RADS) that occurs on Ni/ZnO catalysts remains controversial. Herein, a periodic Ni nanorod supported on ZnO slab was built to represent the Ni/ZnO system, and density functional theory calculations were performed to study the sulfur transfer process and the role of H 2 within the process. The results elucidate that the direct solid-state diffusion of S from Ni to interfacial oxygen vacancies (O v ) is more favorable than the hydrogenation of S to SH/H 2 S on Ni and the subsequent H 2 S desorption, and accordingly, H 2 O is produced on Ni rather than on ZnO. Ab initio thermodynamics analysis shows that the hydrogen atmosphere applied in preparing Ni/ZnO catalysts greatly promotes the O v formation on ZnO surface, which accounts for the presence of interfacial O v in freshly prepared catalysts. Under RADS condition, hydrogenation of interfacial O atoms to form O−H groups facilitates the reverse spillover of these lattice O atoms from ZnO to Ni, accompanied with the interfacial O v generation. In contrast to the classic S transfer mechanism via H 2 S, the present work clearly demonstrates that the interfacial S transfer is a feasible reaction pathway in the RADS mechanism. More importantly, the existence of interfacial O v is an essential prerequisite for this interfacial S diffusion, and H 2 plays a key role in facilitating the O v formation. Abstract:Stimulated by the recent synthesis of penta-NiN2 sheet [ACS Nano 2021, 15, 13,539], we study the hydrogen adsorption on the sheet and the derived nanotubes by using density functional theory with the correction of van der Waals interactions. We have found that each Ni site can only adsorb two hydrogen molecules as expected from the 18-electron rule, the corresponding capacity is 4.44 wt%. As more H2 molecules are introduced, H2 can only be very weakly adsorbed on N sites. When the sheet is curved into nanotubes, the Ni-N distance is enlarged due to the stress, which weakens the orbital hybridizations between Ni and N, and reduces the charge transfer from Ni to N. Abstract:An in-depth understanding of the interactions between hydrogen and transition metal catalysts is of great significance in exploring novel heterogeneous hydrogenation reaction mechanisms. Herein we present a comprehensive study of the interactions of hydrogen on active metal surfaces by using a multiscale method. Six different transition metals of Ni-group and Cu-group are considered. Different from two stable (111) and (100) surfaces, the energetic results of hydrogen species diffusing on and permeating into the active (110) surfaces are fully addressed from three-dimensional potential energy surfaces and density functional theory calculations. Ab initio thermodynamics calculations show that a stable adsorption phase diagram with full hydrogen coverage preferably forms with decreasing reaction temperature and increasing hydrogen partial pressure, especially on the (110) surfaces of Ni-group metals without consideration of the reconstruction events. During the evolutions of metal nanoparticles under moderate reaction conditions, the active (110) surface is difficult to be exposed for Ni-group metal nanoparticles, while for Cu-group metal nanoparticles it is easy to get exposed. These important thermodynamic results will contribute to an in-depth understanding of the interactions between hydrogen species and transition metal catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:This article proposes alumina-supported MoS3 nanoparticles (NPs) as a precursor of model catalysts to study hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) catalytic mechanisms. The NPs were first loaded into gamma-Al2O3 by a simple chemical deposition method and then thermally treated under H-2, N-2 and H2S atmospheres, respectively, to obtain three MoS2/Al2O3 catalysts. The XPS, N-2 adsorption-desorption and HRTEM characterization results show that using MoS3 NPs instead of conventional MoOx NPs as the precursor can effectively tune the edge composition of the MoS2 phase while controlling its micromorphology and avoiding the strong interference from the alumina support to the phase, thus laying the foundation for accurate understanding of the origin of the active sites for HDN reactions. Then the catalytic activity of a series of MoS3-derived catalysts was thoroughly studied and comprehensive results are obtained after rationally deducing the "structure-function" relations: (i) two types of active sites exist in the HDN catalysts, one for the hydrogenation reaction which is related to both sulfur vacancies and brim sites and another for the C-N hydrogenolysis reaction which is connected with the -SH/S2- groups on the edge of the active phase; (ii) the edge composition directly influences the Ni-promoting effect and the "sulfur-deficient" edge structure is more beneficial for the promoter role of Ni. Due to the actual catalyst model first used, the resulting viewpoints exhibit valuable guiding significance for highly efficient HDN catalyst development.
Characterization of Ru-Cu Catalysts Using H2 Chemisorption at 77 K

Abstract:The NiNaY composites have been investigated using various techniques to explore their hydrogen adsorption performance and structural characteristics. Hydrogen adsorption capacities of reduced NiNaY composites were significantly enhanced under various temperatures and pressures. Most noteworthy is that at room temperature and low pressure, hydrogen adsorption amount was increased by a remarkable factor of 7.1 for reduced 10 wt% NiNaY composite. Dissociative hydrogen adsorption and subsequent hydrogen spillover at high pressure have enhanced hydrogen adsorption capacity by a factor of 0.4 and 0.86 on reduced 10 wt% NiNaY composite at 77 and 303 K, respectively. The enhancement effect of hydrogen adsorption on the reduced composites at room temperature is determined by hydrogen adsorption on available nickel sites which were characterized by the active nickel surface areas. However, the optimized hydrogen adsorption enhancement effect on the composite at 77 K is achieved by a combination of suitable active nickel surface area and active support area. The results suggest that spillover effect is occurring at 77 K on the reduced NiNaY composites.
