Abstract:It is proved in this paper that Airy beam has a certain invariant property when it passes through an ABCD optical system. Its field distribution will remain unchanged under some conditions. Further, if the first dark ring of the Airy pattern is truncated by a circular aperture, the propagation of the central spot may be diffraction-free.

Abstract:Airy pattern is formed by diffraction of a plane wave through a circular aperture in the far field with certain side lobes. It is shown that Airy pattern can be truncated at the first dark ring by a circular aperture to pick up the center spot (called Airy disc) without causing additional diffraction fringes, even in the very far field. This may be called zero field truncation technique. And is very useful in practice, for example, as a good quality optical source.

Abstract:White-light non-diffraction beams such as Airy beam and Bessel beam have potential applications in multispectral imaging and micromanipulation. Generation of white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam with high quality and high efficiency still remains challenging for conventional diffractive or refractive optics which suffers from significant chromatic dispersion. In this paper, both high-quality white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam are generated using a deformable mirror by modulating the incident LED beam with tunable cubic and conical wavefronts. The main lobe of the generated white-light non-diffraction beams does not suffer from chromatic dispersion along the propagation. The results also show that the generation of the white-light Bessel beam has higher requirements for spatial coherence than white-light Airy beams. Our work expands the understanding of the white-light non-diffraction beams and paves the way for the applications.

Abstract:Imitated the optical system of Rowland circle structure, the Rowland sphere structure is built in this paper, the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction scalar integral formula of electromagnetic wave is simplified on the Rowland sphere structure, the computational formulas of spatial frequency spectrum and diffractional far field distribution from the weakly guiding optical fiber LP mode are derived. The concept of central disc in LP 01 mode optical fiber diffractional far field, which had analogy to the Airy disc of plane wave Fraunhofer diffraction from circular aperture, is presented, and the calculational formulas of LP 01 mode optical fiber diffractional far field divergence half width is deduced in the end of this paper.

Abstract:By expanding the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, approximate analytical expressions of Wigner distribution function for fundamental mode Gaussian beam through an apertured and misaligned ABCD optical system are derived. Compared with the aligned case, results show that the misaligned optical system will introduce in the output Wigner distribution function a coordinate shift in space-frequency plane. To examine the analytical results, some numerical simulations are carried out and the absolute errors between analytical results and numerical integral ones are presented. It is shown that the approximate analytical results are proper and ascendant.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally study the propagation characteristics of the circular Airy beam (CAB) when its first few light rings are blocked. It is shown that the focus position of the blocked CAB will remain the same, and its abruptly autofocusing property will be enhanced. Since the maximum focal intensity almost remains the same when the first ring is blocked, a better result of abruptly autofocusing property can be obtained when only the first ring is eliminated. Compared with the common CAB with a same hollow region, the intensity of the blocked CAB will focus at a different position and the intensity will be increased much larger than the common CAB. Abstract:We investigated the propagation and autofocusing properties of three Airy-related beams, which are generated by three holograms with unique conjugation and symmetry. Beam patterns are simulated by using angular spectrum formalism and observed experimentally. The autofocusing behavior of black Airy beam is accompanied by formation of eight intensity peaks in the transversal plane. We find that the effect of non-ideal boundary condition is reflected in the diffraction fringes, and the affected ranges are different for different beams.

Abstract:The description of a plane wave diffracted by a circular aperture is directly started from the Maxwell's equations. Based on the vector angular spectrum representation of Maxwell's equations, the diffracted plane wave is decomposed into the TE and TM terms. The analytical TE and TM terms in the far field are presented by stationary phase. As the TE and TM terms are orthogonal to each other in the far field, their sum constitutes the so-called Airy disc pattern. Therefore, this research reveals the composition of Airy disc, which is beneficial to deepen and enhance the recognition of the classical diffraction problem.

Abstract:We have proposed a kind of modified circular Airy beam (MCAB) based upon a modification of the Fourier spectrum of circular Airy beams (CAB) in this paper. Unlike most abruptly autofocusing beams, the position of peak intensity of MCAB can be moved to any rings behind. Two apodization parameters are introduced to describe the propagation characteristics of MCAB. It is found that the focal position, focal trajectory and the size of focal spot do not change with the apodization parameters; but the abruptly autofocusing property will be greatly enhanced if appropriately apodization parameters are chosen. Comparing with the common CAB and the previous blocked CAB, the MCAB shows better abruptly autofocusing property. It may have more applications in various fields. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report an experimental realization of recently introduced Airy beams on incoherent background (ABIBs). The ABIBs are structured random beams that defy diffraction in free space, making them attractive to free-space optical communications, information transfer and imaging. We demonstrate here that the (truncated) laboratory realizations of ABIBs are more resilient to diffraction and far more capable of self-healing after having been obstructed by defects than are truncated coherent Airy beams of the same width of the main lobe and truncation length. The combination of remarkable propagation invariance and self-healing potential of ABIBs carries promise for their applications to optical communications in randomly inhomogeneous environments and biological tissue imaging.

Abstract:The analytical expression for Airy-related beams generated from flat-topped Gaussian beams propagating through a paraxial ABCD optical system is derived and used to investigate its properties in the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) optical system. The influences of the Airy-related beam order N and the fractional order p on the evolution of the beam intensity distribution in the FrFT system are examined in detail. Results show that the FrFT optical system provides a convenient way for modulating the beam profile of Airy-related beams by properly choosing optical parameters: lower order Airy-related beams have a longer non-spreading FrFT range, in which the Airy-related beams can maintain their original intensity distribution with no measurable spreading; and it is also found that the Airy-related beam intensity distribution versus the fractional order is symmetrical about p=1. Moreover, the Airy-related beam intensity distribution versus the fractional order is periodical, and the period is 2. The results obtained in this work are valuable for Airy-related beam shaping.

Abstract:A new kind of Airy-related beam has been obtained from Airy transform for flat-topped Gaussian beams. It is proved in this paper that this beam also possesses an "Airy" profile, quasi-diffraction-free character and transverse accelerating character as the Airy beam generated from the fundamental Gaussian beams. The propagation dynamics of this beam can be modulated by varying N, i.e., the beam order of the flat-topped Gaussian beam.

Abstract:We found a new type of noncircular symmetrical Airy beam called an elliptical Airy beam (EAB). Using a simple single-pixel checkerboard hologram method, we achieved the EAB in an experiment. We observed its unique property of double focusing and the ability of the energy to flow towards the endpoints of the long axis during propagation. These particular properties will have some potential applications.

Abstract:We propose an optical Airy transform in this paper, and obtain the analytical expressions for the Airy transform of fundamental Gaussian beams and finite energy Airy beams. The setup for performing the optical Airy transform is presented. The Airy transform for Gaussian beams and finite energy Airy beams are theoretically calculated and analyzed. Our results show that the Airy beam can be conveniently generated and controlled through the optical Airy transform of the Gaussian beam. The optical Airy transform also can be used to directly modulate the beam parameters of the incident Airy beam, and it can transform the incident Airy beam into the Gaussian beam.

Abstract:The propagation approximation analytic expression and the propagation properties of the high-order Bessel-Gaussian beam through the annular aperture has been studied by using the method of compound Gaussian function.The effect of the output beam caused by different inner and outer radius of the annular aperture also has been analyzed.The results show that,the diffractive properties relative with the width and inner radius of the diaphragm.The same intensity peaks will appear under proper value of the inner radius and width of the annular aperture.

Abstract:We derived the analytical expression for the propagation of Airy-related beams generated from flat-topped Gaussian beams through an ABCD optical system, and use it to study the propagation of this type of beams through a chiral slab. Several influence factors, such as the optical beams order N and the chiral parameter γ of the chiral medium, on the beam propagation properties both in near- and far-zones are discussed in detail. It is shown that the Airy tails of high order beams decay more quickly than those of low order beams in the chiral medium; the constructive interference effect between the LCP (left-circularly polarized) and RCP (right-circularly polarized) beams becomes more significant as the chiral parameter γ increases; the LCP and RCP beams are not separated in the near-zone, while the two beams are obviously separated in the far-zone, and accordingly the interference peaks decrease as the propagation distance increases in the chiral slab.

Abstract:Based on the generalized Raleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral formula, an analytical nonparaxial propagation expression of a partially coherent anomalous hollow beam (AHB) in free space is derived. The far field and the paraxial result are also presented as special cases, respectively. By using the derived formula, the nonparaxial propagation properties of a partially coherent AHB are studied numerically and are compared with the paraxial results. It is found that the nonparaxiality properties of a partially coherent AHB are closely related to its beam waist, coherent length and the propagation distance.

Abstract:Based on the generalized Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral and the expansion of the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, approximate analytical expressions of standard and elegant Laguerre-Gaussian beams passing through a paraxial ABCD optical system with a hard-edged aperture are derived. On the basis of the truncated second-order moments method in the cylindrical coordinate system and the expansion of the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate method for calculating the generalized beam propagation factor is proposed. Closed-form expressions for the generalized beam propagation factor of a truncated standard and elegant Laguerre-Gaussian beam are derived that depend on the orders of Laguerre polynomial and the beam truncation parameter. Some typical numerical examples are given and compared. It is shown that the results obtained by using the obtained analytical method accord with those by using the numerical integration method.
