Abstract:Using cluster Monte Carlo method, we numerically investigate the criticality in the XY model with nematic coupling on the simple cubic lattice. We determine critical lines belong to the three-dimensional XY universality class in variable of theta (2 theta) between the XY-ferromagnetic (nematic) and disordered states. Furthermore, the phase transition between the XY-ferromagnetic and the nematic states is found to be in the three-dimensional Ising universality class. The critical points are determined from the intersections of Binder ratios for various system sizes. With two sets of critical points obtained, we finally construct the phase diagram on the Delta-J plane.

The relationship between the boundary parameters and the two formal parameters appearing in the work of Ghoshal and Zamolodchikov is also discussed.

Abstract:We have developed a quantum-mechanical approach to study the critical properties of the quantum sine-Gordon equation describing a massless scalar field in 1 + 1 space-time dimensions with interaction density proportional to cos(beta-0-phi). The main feature of the present theory is to find an appropriate starting point for perturbation expansion, which can directly treat the infrared divergences encountered in the conventional perturbation theory. Exact critical conditions for the phase transition of the model are derived; and the quantum sine-Gordon Hamiltonian is found to correspond exactly to a free-field model. Near the critical regime, a gap will open near zero momentum in the excitation spectrum, and the corresponding ground-state wave function is a pairing quasiparticle state, analogous to the BCS superconducting state. It is proved that this ground state will possess quasi-long-range and quasi-off-diagonal long-range correlations. Comparisons with the Kosterlitz-Thouless classical theory of the two-dimensional Coulomb gas are also made.
Higher-derivative four-dimensional sine-Gordon model

Abstract:The phase structure of a higher derivative sine-Gordon model in four dimensions is analysed. It is shown that the inclusion of a relevant two-derivative term in the action significantly modifies some of the results obtained by neglecting this operator, and the final picture is substantially different from the one describing the phase diagram associated with the two-dimensional Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. The study is carried out with the help of the Renormalization Group (RG) flow equations, determined for a set of three parameters, and numerically solved both for a truncated series expansion approximation, and for the complete set of equations. In both cases, a continuous line of fixed points, terminating at a particular point presenting universal properties, is found, together with a manifold that separates two phases, roughly characterized by the sign of the coupling $\widetilde z_k$ associated with this newly included operator. While the phase corresponding to $\widetilde z_k>0$ shows some pathologies, the one with $\widetilde z_k<0$ has a well-behaved infrared limit, where the system reduces to a Gaussian-like model. We also briefly comment about the possibility that our model could capture some of the qualitative features of the ultraviolet (UV) critical manifold of conformally reduced gravity.

Abstract:Motivated by the realization of coupled Luttinger liquids in a split condensate for quantum sine-Gordon (SG) model [Haller et al., Nature 466, 597 (2010); Schweiglet et al., Nature 545, 323 (2017); Nat. Phys. 17, 559 (2021)], here we study the phase transition in coupled condensates using the bosonization method. We show that when these condensates have different velocities ui and Luttinger parameters Ki, the physics is described by a generalized SG model, which is also exactly solvable. We use various approaches, including the Wilson renormalization group, correlation function, variational wave function, and the equivalent Coulomb gas methods, demonstrating the phase transition at 2 = 1/(4K1) + 1/(4K2). The physical meaning of this boundary is explained by the density-phase uncertainty principle, showing how the many-body interactions drive the coupled condensates from two gapless phases to one gapless phase. The relative phase between the condensates may fundamentally affect the band structure, yet it will not affect this boundary. Furthermore, we also discuss the relevance of our result in the two-dimensional models for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, from which the physical meaning of this boundary is self-evident. Our results can be used to study the phase transitions in one-dimensional coupled models with Fermions and Bosons, and even the Kane-Fisher model with impurities, and study their phase transitions, non-Gaussian dynamics, and thermalization, which may be of great interest in quantum simulation.

Abstract:In order to study the influence of compactness on low-energy properties, we compare the phase structures of the compact and non-compact two-dimensional multi-frequency sine-Gordon models. It is shown that the high-energy scaling of the compact and non-compact models coincides, but their low-energy behaviors differ. The critical frequency $\beta^2 = 8\pi$ at which the sine-Gordon model undergoes a topological phase transition is found to be unaffected by the compactness of the field since it is determined by high-energy scaling laws. However, the compact two-frequency sine-Gordon model has first and second order phase transitions determined by the low-energy scaling: we show that these are absent in the non-compact model.

Abstract:We present the first exact theory and analytical formulas for the large-scale phase fluctuations in the sine-Gordon model, valid in all regimes of the field theory, for arbitrary temperatures and interaction strengths. Our result is based on the Ballistic Fluctuation Theory combined with Generalized Hydrodynamics, and can be seen as an exact ``dressing" of the phenomenological soliton-gas picture first introduced by Sachdev and Young [S. Sachdev and A. P. Young, PRL 78, 2220 (1997)], to the modes of Generalised Hydrodynamics. The resulting physics of phase fluctuations in the sine-Gordon model is qualitatively different, as the stable quasi-particles of integrability give coherent ballistic propagation instead of diffusive spreading. We provide extensive numerical checks of our analytical predictions within the classical regime of the field theory by using Monte Carlo methods. We discuss how our results are of ready applicability to experiments on tunnel-coupled quasicondensates.

Abstract:Using the approach of low-energy effective field theory, the phase diagram is studied for a mixture of two species of pseudospin-1/2 Bose atoms with interspecies spin exchange. There are four mean-field regimes on the parameter plane of g(e) and g(z), where g(e) is the interspecies spin-exchange interaction strength, while g(z) is the difference between the interaction strength of interspecies scattering without spin exchange of equal spins and that of unequal spins. Two regimes, with vertical bar g(z)vertical bar > vertical bar g(e)vertical bar correspond to ground states with the total spins of the two species parallel or antiparallel along the z direction, and the low-energy excitations are equivalent to those of two-component spinless bosons. The other two regimes, with vertical bar g(c)vertical bar > vertical bar g(z)vertical bar, correspond to ground states with the total spins of the two species parallel or antiparallel on the xy plane, and the low-energy excitations are described by a sine-Gordon model coupled with a free scalar field, where the effective fields are combinations of the phases of the original four boson fields. In (1 + 1)-dimension, they are described by Kosterlitz-Thouless renormalization group (RG) equations, and there are three sectors in the phase plane of a scaling dimension and a dimensionless parameter proportional to the strength of the cosine interaction, both depending on the densities. The gaps of these elementary excitations are experimental probes of the underlying many-body ground states.

Abstract:We study the Cauchy problem for the sine-Gordon equation in the semiclassical limit with pure-impulse initial data of sufficient strength to generate both high-frequency rotational motion near the peak of the impulse profile and also high-frequency librational motion in the tails. Subject to suitable conditions of a general nature, we analyze the fluxon condensate solution approximating the given initial data for small time near points where the initial data crosses the separatrix of the phase portrait of the simple pendulum. We show that the solution is locally constructed as a universal curvilinear grid of superluminal kinks and grazing collisions thereof, with the grid curves being determined from rational solutions of the Painleve-II system.

The FBSDE approach to sine-Gordon up to $6π$

Abstract:We develop a stochastic analysis of the sine-Gordon Euclidean quantum field $(\cos (\beta \varphi))_2$ on the full space up to the second threshold, i.e. for $\beta^2 < 6 \pi$. The basis of our method is a forward-backward stochastic differential equation (FBSDE) for a decomposition $(X_t)_{t \geqslant 0}$ of the interacting Euclidean field $X_{\infty}$ along a scale parameter $t \geqslant 0$. This FBSDE describes the optimiser of the stochastic control representation of the Euclidean QFT introduced by Barashkov and one of the authors. We show that the FBSDE provides a description of the interacting field without cut-offs and that it can be used effectively to study the sine-Gordon measure to obtain results about large deviations, integrability, decay of correlations for local observables, singularity with respect to the free field, Osterwalder-Schrader axioms and other properties.

Abstract:We consider the dipole-dipole correlations for the two-dimensional Coulomb gas/sine-Gordon model for $\beta> 8\pi$ by a renormalization group method. First we re-establish the renormalization group analysis for the partition function using finite range decomposition of the covariance. Then we extend the analysis to the correlation functions. Finally, we show a power-law decay characteristic of the dipole gas.

Abstract:The sine-Gordon model on the half-line with a dynamical boundary introduced by Delius and one of the authors is considered at quantum level. Classical boundary conditions associated with classical integrability are shown to be preserved at quantum level too. Non-local conserved charges are constructed explicitly in terms of the field and boundary operators. We solve the intertwining equation associated with a certain coideal subalgebra of $U_q(\hat{sl_2})$ generated by these non-local charges. The corresponding solution is shown to satisfy quantum boundary Yang-Baxter equations. Up to an exact relation between the quantization length of the boundary quantum mechanical system and the sine-Gordon coupling constant, we conjecture the soliton/antisoliton reflection matrix and boundstates reflection matrices. The structure of the boundary state is then considered, and shown to be divided in two sectors. Also, depending on the sine-Gordon coupling constant a finite set of boundary bound states are identified. Taking the analytic continuation of the coupling, the corresponding boundary sinh-Gordon model is briefly discussed. In particular, the particle reflection factor enjoys weak-strong coupling duality.
