Abstract:A new variational approach is proposed to study the ground-state of a two-level system coupled to a dispersionless phonon bath. By the extended coherent state, where the more phonon correlations are easily incorporated, we can obtain very accurate ground state energy and the tunnelling reduction factor in all regime of tunnelling matrix element delta(0) and coupling parameter s. The relative difference between the present ones and those by exact numerical diagonalization is less then 0.001%. In addition, some simple analytical results are given in the limits of delta(0)/s -> 0 and infinity.

Abstract:A new procedure of potential importance sampling method is applied to investigate the phase transition of the (1+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon model. With this method, we obtain the Kosterlitz–Thouless-type phase transition critical value of β2≅8π with a relative error as small as 0.4%.

Abstract:The study of ground-state properties of the Fermi-Hubbard model is a long-lasting task in the research of strongly correlated systems. Owing to the exponentially growing complexity of the system, a quantitative analysis usually demands high computational cost and is restricted to small samples, especially in two or higher dimensions. Here, we introduce a variational method in the frame of fermionic Gaussian states, and obtain the ground states of one- and two-dimensional attractive Hubbard models via imaginary-time evolution. We calculate the total energy and benchmark the results in a wide range of interaction strength and filling factor with those obtained via exact two-body results, the density matrix renormalization group based on matrix product states (MPS), and projector Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. For both 1D and 2D cases, the Gaussian variational method presents accurate results for total energy with a maximum systematic error ~4% in the intermediate interaction region. The accuracy of these results has negligible dependence on the system size. We further calculate the double occupancy and find excellent agreement with MPS and QMC, as well as the experimental results of cold quantum gases in optical lattices. The results suggest that the Gaussian pairing state is a good approximation to the ground states of attractive Hubbard model, in particular in the strong and weak coupling limits. Moreover, we generalize the method to the attractive Hubbard model with a finite spin-polarization, which can be mapped to the repulsive interaction case via particle-hole transformation, and obtain accurate results of ground state energy and double occupancy. Our work demonstrates the ability of the Gaussian variational method to extract ground state properties of strongly correlated many-body systems with negligible computational cost, especially of large size and in higher dimensions.

Abstract:The sine-Gordon model captures the low-energy effective dynamics of a wealth of one-dimensional quantum systems, stimulating the experimental efforts in building a versatile quantum simulator of this field theory and fueling the parallel development of new theoretical toolkits able to capture far-from-equilibrium settings. In this work, we analyze the realization of sine-Gordon from the interference pattern of two one-dimensional quasicondensates: we argue the emergent field theory is well described by its classical limit and develop its large-scale description based on Generalized Hydrodynamics. We show how, despite sine-Gordon being an integrable field theory, trap-induced inhomogeneities cause instabilities of excitations and provide exact analytical results to capture this effect.

Abstract:In this paper we use an analytical-numerical approach to find, in a systematic way, new 1-soliton solutions for a discrete sine-Gordon system in one spatial dimension. Since the spatial domain is unbounded, the numerical scheme employed to generate these soliton solutions is based on the artificial boundary method. A large selection of numerical examples provides much insight into the possible shapes of these new 1-solitons.

Abstract:In the present paper we consider the semiclassical magnetic Schrödinger equation, which describes the dynamics of particles under the influence of a magnetic field. The solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation is approximated by a single Gaussian wave packet via the time-dependent Dirac--Frenkel variational principle. For the approximation we derive ordinary differential equations of motion for the parameters of the variational solution. Moreover, we prove $L^2$-error bounds and observable error bounds for the approximating Gaussian wave packet.

Sine-Gordon model at finite temperature: the method of random surfaces

Abstract:We study the sine-Gordon quantum field theory at finite temperature by generalizing the method of random surfaces to compute the free energy and one-point functions of exponential operators non-perturbatively. Focusing on the gapped phase of the sine-Gordon model, we demonstrate the method's accuracy by comparing our results to the predictions of other methods and to exact results in the thermodynamic limit. We find excellent agreement between the method of random surfaces and other approaches when the temperature is not too small with respect to the mass gap. Extending the method to more general problems in strongly interacting one-dimensional quantum systems is discussed.

Small deviations of Gaussian multiplicative chaos and the free energy of the two-dimensional massless Sinh--Gordon model

Abstract:We derive new small deviations bounds for a class of Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures obtained from Gaussian fields with zero spatial average. The upper bound holds for a class of fields closely related to the $\star$-scale invariant Gaussian fields in arbitrary number of dimensions, and the lower bound holds for the Gaussian free field with zero spatial average on the torus. The upper bound is obtained by a modification of the method that was used in \cite{LRV}, and the lower bound is obtained by applying the Donsker--Varadhan variational formula. We also give the probabilistic path integral formulation of the massless Sinh--Gordon model on a torus of side length $R$, and study its partition function $R$ tends to infinity. We apply the small deviation bounds for Gaussian multiplicative chaos to obtain lower and upper bounds for the logarithm of the partition function, leading to the existence of a non-zero and finite subsequential infinite volume limit for the free energy.

Abstract:The sine-Gordon model is a paradigmatic quantum field theory that provides the low-energy effective description of many gapped 1D systems. Despite this fact, its complete thermodynamic description in all its regimes has been lacking. Here we fill this gap and derive the framework that captures its thermodynamics and serves as the basis of its hydrodynamic description. As a first application, we compute the Drude weight characterising the ballistic transport of topological charge and demonstrate that its dependence on the value of the coupling shows a fractal structure, similar to the gapless phase of the XXZ spin chain. The thermodynamic framework can be applied to study other features of non-equilibrium dynamics in the sine-Gordon model using generalised hydrodynamics, opening the way to a wide array of theoretical studies and potential novel experimental predictions.

Abstract:Using the approach of low-energy effective field theory, the phase diagram is studied for a mixture of two species of pseudospin-1/2 Bose atoms with interspecies spin exchange. There are four mean-field regimes on the parameter plane of g(e) and g(z), where g(e) is the interspecies spin-exchange interaction strength, while g(z) is the difference between the interaction strength of interspecies scattering without spin exchange of equal spins and that of unequal spins. Two regimes, with vertical bar g(z)vertical bar > vertical bar g(e)vertical bar correspond to ground states with the total spins of the two species parallel or antiparallel along the z direction, and the low-energy excitations are equivalent to those of two-component spinless bosons. The other two regimes, with vertical bar g(c)vertical bar > vertical bar g(z)vertical bar, correspond to ground states with the total spins of the two species parallel or antiparallel on the xy plane, and the low-energy excitations are described by a sine-Gordon model coupled with a free scalar field, where the effective fields are combinations of the phases of the original four boson fields. In (1 + 1)-dimension, they are described by Kosterlitz-Thouless renormalization group (RG) equations, and there are three sectors in the phase plane of a scaling dimension and a dimensionless parameter proportional to the strength of the cosine interaction, both depending on the densities. The gaps of these elementary excitations are experimental probes of the underlying many-body ground states.
Anomalous charge transport in the sine-Gordon model

Abstract:We conduct a comprehensive study of anomalous charge transport in the quantum sine--Gordon model. Employing the framework of Generalized Hydrodynamics, we compute Drude weights and Onsager matrices across a wide range of coupling strengths to quantify ballistic and diffusive transport, respectively. We find that charge transport is predominantly diffusive at accessible timescales, indicated by the corresponding Onsager matrix significantly exceeding the Drude weight -- contrary to most integrable models where transport is primarily ballistic. Reducing the Onsager matrix to a few key two-particle scattering processes enables us to efficiently examine transport in both low- and high-temperature limits. The charge transport is dictated by non-diagonal scattering of the internal charge degree of freedom: At particular values of the coupling strength with diagonal, diffusive effects amount to merely subleading corrections. However, at couplings approaching these points, the charge Onsager matrix and corresponding diffusive time-scale diverge. Our findings relate to similar transport anomalies in XXZ spin chains, offering insights through their shared Bethe Ansatz structures.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a new space‐time spectral collocation method for solving the one‐dimensional sine‐Gordon equation. We apply a spectral collocation method for discretizing spatial derivatives, and then use the spectral collocation method for the time integration of the resulting nonlinear second‐order system of ordinary differential equations (ODE). Our formulation has high‐order accurate in both space and time. Optimal a priori error bounds are derived in the L2‐norm for the semidiscrete formulation. Critical Properties Of The Quantum Sine-Gordon Equation

Abstract:We have developed a quantum-mechanical approach to study the critical properties of the quantum sine-Gordon equation describing a massless scalar field in 1 + 1 space-time dimensions with interaction density proportional to cos(beta-0-phi). The main feature of the present theory is to find an appropriate starting point for perturbation expansion, which can directly treat the infrared divergences encountered in the conventional perturbation theory. Exact critical conditions for the phase transition of the model are derived; and the quantum sine-Gordon Hamiltonian is found to correspond exactly to a free-field model. Near the critical regime, a gap will open near zero momentum in the excitation spectrum, and the corresponding ground-state wave function is a pairing quasiparticle state, analogous to the BCS superconducting state. It is proved that this ground state will possess quasi-long-range and quasi-off-diagonal long-range correlations. Comparisons with the Kosterlitz-Thouless classical theory of the two-dimensional Coulomb gas are also made.

Abstract:In this study, the energy control and asymptotic stability of the 1D sine-Gordon equation were investigated from the viewpoint of numerical approximation. An order reduction method was employed to transform the closed-loop system into an equivalent system, and an average-central finite difference scheme was constructed. This scheme is not only energy-preserving but also possesses uniform stability. The discrete multiplier method was utilized to obtain the uniformly asymptotic stability of the discrete systems. Moreover, to cope with the nonlinear term of the model, a discrete Wirtinger inequality suitable for our approximating scheme was established. Finally, several numerical experiments based on the eigenvalue distribution of the linearized approximation systems were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the numerical approximating algorithm.

Abstract:We present the first exact theory and analytical formulas for the large-scale phase fluctuations in the sine-Gordon model, valid in all regimes of the field theory, for arbitrary temperatures and interaction strengths. Our result is based on the Ballistic Fluctuation Theory combined with Generalized Hydrodynamics, and can be seen as an exact ``dressing" of the phenomenological soliton-gas picture first introduced by Sachdev and Young [S. Sachdev and A. P. Young, PRL 78, 2220 (1997)], to the modes of Generalised Hydrodynamics. The resulting physics of phase fluctuations in the sine-Gordon model is qualitatively different, as the stable quasi-particles of integrability give coherent ballistic propagation instead of diffusive spreading. We provide extensive numerical checks of our analytical predictions within the classical regime of the field theory by using Monte Carlo methods. We discuss how our results are of ready applicability to experiments on tunnel-coupled quasicondensates.
